- wollsmosh, on 11/17/2008, -15/+1Microsoft may be purely a software company, but you can't by a mac without buying the competing software; OSX.
Windows does not run natively on a mac (unless you know a lot of hacking). You can run windows emulator programs within OSX, but it's not as smooth
They most certainly are competitors.
Also, as a mac owner, that sure does look like a mac.- ventralnet, on 11/17/2008, -1/+11It can run windows natively.. apple put something out called bootcamp that lets you do it.
- nmnnotmyname, on 11/17/2008, -1/+9Uhg. Since the x86 switch, Bootcamp can natively run Windows. I don't own a mac but do the math: newer OS X can run under regular PCs with minor work and it's not even generic. Windows is generic. It can certainly use newer hardware.
I don't honestly agree with the PowerPC -> x86 switch, but it does give unparalleled support for windows, including graphics support. I also bought a legit copy of OS X to test ***** on. (Yeah, I know it breaks EULA, but most license agreements are full of ***** anyways.) - willsk8forwings, on 11/17/2008, -10/+0Eh it looks like an HP computer to me
- bknoll22, on 11/17/2008, -1/+10I love when people think they know what they are talking about but are completely off
- NicoNicoNico, on 11/17/2008, -0/+3Agreed. I run Bootcamp on my MBP and it runs seamlessly.
I also run WINE on it, but it's still kinda buggy. (I wanted to see how well it worked.) - black27696, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7Yeah, I had to h4}{0r the bootcamp setup to change partition size. Then when I rebooted I had to use 1337 $ki11z to click on the windows partition and install vista. Thank God I know a lot of hacking. I guess you can own the hardware and still not know anything about it, huh wollsmosh?
- jellygraph, on 11/17/2008, -0/+3wollsmosh: um, where have you been the last few years? you can run Windows natively on a mac since they switched to using intel processors. it's called bootcamp. it comes with free os x and it allows you to dual boot with windows.
i don't care much for bootcamp anyhow. I don't need to run windows natively as i have no reason to run windows as a desktop except for when i need to run ie6/ie7/chrome browser tests. parallels, virtualbox or vmware suit me just fine. the next version of parallels is looking to be quite cool as well, with DirectX and OpenGL support.
- hotrodZoidberg, on 11/17/2008, -3/+23Since Windows runs on Macs, and Microsoft does software, they shouldn't be so anal.

- craigily, on 11/17/2008, -5/+4its just easier for apple to attack microsoft because they represent all other computers pretty much.
- giantsfan134, on 11/17/2008, -0/+11As the prevalent OS, Microsoft does not need to draw attention to its competitors and give them exposure, but it is better for them to show their own features and why people should stay with PCs and keep the large market share that they hold. The opposite is true with Macs: as the smaller market share they can (and do) attract attention to the bad things about Windows and try to gain a portion of Microsoft's business.
- allocate, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2As giants said above, my ex was a marketing major and told me once that when I see two similar products in an advertisement, the one advertising is generally the one with less market share. There's simply no need for the more successful product to call your attention to a similar product.

- gllopc, on 11/17/2008, -41/+2I wouldn't say they're primarily a hardware company. I think they are much more into making a "computer experience", "media experience", etc., all of which require hardware, an operating system, and applications. I think they're one, as much as they are the rest.

?? - morpheus69, on 11/17/2008, -1/+1psykiv: Those numbers are market cap, not sales or market share. Market cap is the total value of the company (in other words, what it would cost you to buy every outstanding share of the company at today's price). Coke and Pepsi are huge companies with hundreds of product lines (bottled water, snack foods, fast-food chains, etc.) so simply comparing market cap doesn't tell you anything about their respective share of the cola market.
- duncanspumpkin, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1i dunno where you live but irn-bru is the market leader here by far. Then again as the only contry in the world which seems to sell it youd expect that.

8^ ]-~ - RoboCafaz, on 11/17/2008, -44/+194Not all silver laptops are Macs.
Also, that PSX controller is a very common design for USB controllers.- goofygarber, on 11/17/2008, -18/+81That is definitely a Mac.
It looks like a Powerbook or a previous gen Macbook Pro. Design firms do these ads, Microsoft doesn't do it in house. Macs are good looking. Pretty straightforward.- Syphon8, on 11/17/2008, -32/+8Macs are ugly and plain.

My neighbor's mac was, though. Ugly tower. Always crashed. Had to use a CD caddy. I always thought that caddy thing was stupid..... and he touted it as if it were awesome. We argued a lot. - jabberwolff, on 11/17/2008, -1/+1HEY MACTARD!!
THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT A MAC !!!!
Copy the picture and zoom into the keyboard. Notice how it has the normal smooshed together keyboard?!
Now go look at a macbook pro. They have the SONY type keyboards where they are separated keys.
But lets say it's one of the older types. There is a seam running down the side of back side of the screen. Mac book pros dont have this!!!
UGhh.... dealing with you Mac fanatics is like dealing with a bunch of retards trying to ***** a doorknob! - skemez1, on 11/17/2008, -0/+3Hey Jabberwolff next time before you start blowing your horn and trying to put people down make sure that what you say is true or else you look like the idiot that you are trying to make other look like.

- DamnMan, on 11/17/2008, -4/+15Besides the back of the lid being black my Compaq(HP) looks damn near identical to the image. Based on what you can actually SEE from the image it could be any large silver laptop.
Point of fact notice what looks like an inlay along the edge of the lid. Something I don't see on any of the images of apple laptops after a quick GIS.- porter, on 11/17/2008, -3/+2"Point of fact notice what looks like an inlay along the edge of the lid. Something I don't see on any of the images of apple laptops after a quick GIS."
You mean the plastic edge that is plainly visible in just about every image that turns up searching for "macbook pro"? It's a 100% chance that it's a 15" PowerBook or a MacBook Pro. The half-sized arrow keys that are just visible down below the text are a dead giveaway. - DamnMan, on 11/17/2008, -0/+3oh?
http://www.23usa.com/MacBookPro/MacBookPro/slides/ ...
http://www.cel.sfsu.edu/images/news/craig-abaya-ma ...
The "half sized" arrow keys you mean kinda like the toshiba satellite or acer? (my compaq has the same size arrow keys as well, all be it slightly more offset)
http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/toshiba-sate ...
http://gallery.techarena.in/data/513/Acer-Aspire-O ...
Both are the right color to boot.
It may well be a mac book. But then again it may not. That inlay may just be a trick of light on the rounded edge. Then again it may not. regardless, seeing a tiny blurry image of a forth of a laptop isn't a hell of a lot to base such a certain assumption on.
And hey I got some great photographic proof of Sasquach while we are on the subject of small blurry photos. - skemez1, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7Let me help clear it up for you guys. it is definitely a mac. Since it was an obvious stock photo i just looked it up.
http://www.millionenrente.com/gewinnspiel/game/img ...
now stop fighting and be nice - porter, on 11/18/2008, -0/+0Flogging the dead horse here, but DamnMan, seriously? First of all, what part of "just about every image" is confusing to you? Second, the first image you pointed to shows the plastic edge, even on the lid from behind for crap's sake. Third, "half-height" does not mean slightly smaller than other keys. It means two stacked keys that fit exactly in line with the row of normal-sized keys. Both of your examples offset the arrow keys from the rest of the row because they're not half-height keys.
- porter, on 11/17/2008, -3/+2"Point of fact notice what looks like an inlay along the edge of the lid. Something I don't see on any of the images of apple laptops after a quick GIS."
- baldduck, on 11/17/2008, -5/+2I'm pretty convinced those are PSX controllers. They may be similar, but not that similar. The laptop is fairly ambiguous.
- RoboCafaz, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4http://www.xboygame.com/ebayImage/PS3/PS3-Cont-1.j ...
That's a USB controller. I own one of them. They're basically PSX controllers made of a cheaper plastic, no vibration and no markings on the buttons. - iofthestorm, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5Umm, no. If you zoom in a lot you can see that the D-pad isn't split like Sony's D-pads are, it's one solid circle. Definitely not a PSX controller.
- RoboCafaz, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1Umm, no. Its not a solid circle. Trust me, I have PSX controllers and I have this controller. They're the same general design.
- RoboCafaz, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4http://www.xboygame.com/ebayImage/PS3/PS3-Cont-1.j ...
- kelowna4life, on 11/17/2008, -1/+3You would figure that they would have a pic of their xbox controllers for windows vs. some 3rd party ***** IF those are indeed generic usb controllers. Even if they arn't everyone knows the design to be sony so its retarded none the less.
- ChrisLondon, on 11/17/2008, -2/+10It's a MacBook Pro definitely, but like someone said earlier, Microsoft make software, why should they care?
- DarthDiabetes, on 11/17/2008, -1/+2It could be a Sony Vaio. I have two of them at home and they both have silver keyboards and key layouts that look like that.
- skemez1, on 11/17/2008, -1/+1I own the same laptop as in the add and it is a mac. Nobody said all silver laptops are macs but you would be hard pressed to find an aluminum laptop (not painted plastic) that wasn't a mac.
- Hellman109, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1Agreed, I have one made by Logitech
- samuraiswordsmn, on 11/17/2008, -2/+2I'm telling you, that's a Macbook Pro. If the aluminum round corner of the screen doesn't convince you look at the keys. Those keys have a unique shape.. They're slightly bigger and have a shallow curve. That might sound crazy to some people, but trust me, that's a Macbook Pro. Anyone can spot it from a mile away.
