Market forces would have eventually pushed them to a better online distribution system other than iTunes anyway. Sooner or later (Probably the former rather than the latter) NBC will partner with other content distributors and create a unified, marketable standard that won't be tied to just one device.- Shiner6, on 10/10/2007, -6/+4A unified, marketable standard that is not tied to just one device - you mean like a TV? You're confuszingz me. Please stop. It hurts real bad. - Herolint, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I don't think you've ever used iTunes to download a TV show. There simply isn't a better distribution method of its kind out there that I've seen. Especially when you buy a season pass. When a new episode is out, it just automatically downloads to your machine for your viewing pleasure. Pirate Bay has a fairly easy distribution method, but I think iTunes still has them beat (not on price, of course). TV is probably the easiest method, but it doesn't magically get onto your iPod.
Of course you are correct, it is NBC's content and they can do whatever they want with it. Apple, being the owner of the iTunes distribution system can, of course, tell NBC to jump in a ditch too. And I, as the owner of my money, can tell NBC to go zucker themselves if they think I'm going to pay $5.00 to watch a TV show. - Jimzip, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1TGMD...
Don't you want cheaper material? Apple wants to make sure all the content they sell is cheap, thus $1.99.. NBC wanted $4.99 per episode, Apple didn't want to increase the prices, NBC pushed, Apple ditched NBC. That's the story.
Are you saying you'd rather pay *more* for content? Cause that's ridiculous..
This ain't about Apple fanboyism..

- OrangeTide, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The only sense I can make out of this move to dramatically increase the price for NBC shows is pressure from advertisers who might think that people are getting to watch shows for cheaper than what advertisers pay for those same shows. - babble, on 10/10/2007, -6/+10"NBC owns their content, they can sell it or not however they want. End of Story."
Ah, how utterly inconvenient, the modern age with its digital communications technologies, enabling consumers to actually speak their minds when greedy media companies make monumentally stupid decisions...things were so much better back before this interweb thing. Just imagine how much simpler things would be for poor, besotten NBC if they didn't have to actually deal with pesky Apple giving them free money and a new distribution channel; how much more lovely the world would be for NBC if people simply bought NBC's ***** instead of calling them on it.
The anti-apple trolls have (as usual) got it wrong. Quelle surprise.- pixelbud, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Amen to that. All this boils down to is Greed. NBC wants to control the content distribution model. Rape us with pricing. And in effect are shooting themselves in the foot. Much ground will be lost. Many torrents will be shared - in higher volume.

- gconway, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Let's see, $1.99 an episode for a season of 22 episodes = $44, about the price of a discounted DVD box set from Amazon; but without the box, without the DVDs, without the extra material, without the higher-quality video and audio. Sounds like a deal to me! And wouldn't it be an even bigger deal to get buyers to pay $110 for a season without packaging, production, design and delivery costs? Awesome! As someone who's picked up only a handful of TV episodes from iTunes to sample shows I otherwise would've missed, I can't figure out why ANYONE would buy a show from iTunes as it stands now -- never mind how it would be if these morons managed to change the pricing. How do these idiots get and keep their jobs? Oh, I forgot -- this is television we're talking about...
- JeremyBanks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2To be fair, there aren't NO delivery costs. They may have to pay a few cents for the bandwidth you use.
- cleverboy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Let's be even MORE fair. gconway, MOST people shopping iTunes do not buy 22 episodes of anything (sometimes they do, but not always). They buy an episode here or there.
They decide if they want a particular episode to see again, and they buy it. That's the whole flaming point isn't it? If I had to BUY the Season on DVD everytime, I wouldn't. Moveover, in some cases its cheaper, but the two formats ONLY compete when the DVD has an iPod ready version on the DVD-ROM (not often the case). People are paying for the convenience of the format, NOT simply for the content. While I wouldn't buy the South Park season on DVD, I've purchased two episodes that made me laugh my ass off. If I do buy the DVD later, I don't mind that I'm double-dipping. Moreover, I refuse to by Avatar on iTunes, because the series is so god, I really want to just get the DVD. I don't care about indidivual episodes. Believe it or not, because one is immediate gratification and the other is quality and extra conent... some people... some, even double dip.
Make more sense now?

- bdamon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0If NBC is leaving I'm hoping they have an alternative strategy for distributing their content. I wouldnn't mind at all if they used Amazon for distributing all their stuff. Works great with my Gigabeat and my TiVo. It will be good to have more competition in this market. Apple is charging way too much for their hardware right now. Another real competitor in this place would drive those prices down I hope. I have a 5.0 version iPod and there's no way I'm paying $250 for a new one when I can get players just as good for $50-100 cheaper. The only problem is that the content has been as good. This will hopefully create a good alternative for content, or drive Apple's extermely greedy prices down. Either way, I hope it works our for us consumers.
- stockjones, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2In Zuckerland I guess you need all that money so you can afford those Armani suits and hollywood lifestyle. Times are changing and many of the old school media companies are urgently trying to deal with the changes. Companies like Google, Apple may become the new media conglomerates.
