- ohmar, on 10/12/2007, -62/+41The company folds, Microsoft buys a conrolling share, and Windows OS X is suddenly the most advanced operating system on the market, yet somehow they still end up creating back doors and security holes. Who knows how they do it.

Just kidding - hopefully someone's being groomed. - wilsonics, on 10/12/2007, -24/+15He's not immortal, he's a ***** robot! Close, but he'll die in a few hundred years.
And, the "cancer surgery" was just to upgrade his aging g4 processor to the new core duo...a massive upgrade, he decided not to upgrade to the g5 because intel paid him a large sum of money.
Apple could stand to "think different" in their allocation of money toward their software team....now that they have a nice intel platform to work on....let's see those apps people! - deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21When Steve Jobs left Apple in 1985, for a while, it did better... much better.
It took John Scully's obsession with developing the Newton the neglecting the Mac, and the rise of Wintel that led to Apple's near death in the mid 90's.
Anyone who thinks they can predict stuff like this is... thinking different. - Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -23/+20"Steve Jobs is Immortal, dont you know anything?"
Yes, but what happens when some bloke lops his head off? - baronmon, on 10/12/2007, -24/+6OS X has no security flaws or back doors....or perhaps just not enough people use OS X to make it worth looking for its security flaws or back doors.

- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8apple did worse when steve was gone in the 80s and 90s. look at apple mid-90s, then look at apple mid-2000.
also, ms has NEVER owned stock in apple. bill gates did (for a while), but he doesn't anymore.
everybody needs to get their facts straight. - rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4He will rise again in 6.66 days and show himself to be the Anti-Christ. So owned shares in Apple: yes - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You guys do realize that Steve Jobs doesn't personally design and engineer every Apple product, right??
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -49/+8Anyone could do steve's job. He is just the boss.
- nato64, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6most morbid digg ever. other than that, i've thought of this too. he is such an influential man at apple. i agree with the people who said ives would be a good successor.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -25/+25It's not like Steve Jobs is making all the Macs and iPods in his basement or something, there are thousands of people working for the company. He doesn't design the products, he doesn't program the OS, and he doesn't manufacture the computers (thank the Chinese for that)
Steve's a figurehead. Sure, he probably has some great ideas and helps things along quite a bit, but it's not like the company will suddenly disappear when Jobs leaves- bbatsell, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10While I agree that there are numerous other talented visionaries in the company, and it wouldn't be in dire straits should Jobs depart, calling Jobs a figurehead is most certainly going overboard and is pretty far from the truth.
- Godric, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Look at Apple before Jobs returned. I believe you will be forced to rethink your position on the effect of good leadership.
- soundboy64, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Ives will take over as Chief Design and Chief Executive Operator to become the CDEO

I comes down to one simple thing, are you an optimist or a pessimist, deep down my glass has always been half full! - TripOverFeet, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Steve can truse Jonathan Ive, the creater of the iPod and basically all iHardware. If he trains him for long enough, there is a possiblilty that the company will be able to survive. Maybe it won't be as great as it was when Jobs was running it, but at least we can worship someone. (other than the late steve)
- mikoslav, on 10/12/2007, -14/+8But we weill stil worship Steve, right? Except then he's going to be Saint Steve :)

- gimpshop, on 10/12/2007, -11/+14Jesus isn't dead - he came back. If Jobs can do that - then you can start worshipping him.
- cathode, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I'll reserve my worship for people who can come back to life, thank you.
- AllKnowledge, on 10/12/2007, -21/+18Apple shares are a very risky investment. They are valued like a internet bubble company. The only thing you hoping for is that more idiots will believe the hype and buy after you do. Just make sure you are not the last idiot
- vinny, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5It would only be hype if they didn't deliver. In my experience they almost always deliver. Given the growth potential right now, you'd have to be a fool not to take Apple seriously.
- bigkm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1the thought of buying apple shares ran through my head about 2 years ago, i didn't have a job so i really couldn't do anything about it. i think the share price then was something like $22. (kick myself)
- gimpshop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nevermind.
- ohhhL3ThaL, on 10/12/2007, -29/+8The same thing that happens to Microsoft when Bill Gates dies.
Dumb.
no digg- AoSimon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20Not quite true I think. While Gate might have as much influence on MS as a company as Jobs does on Apple, also as a company, Gates simply doesn't have that much influence on CONSUMERS and STOCKHOLDERS as Jobs does... there's this whole "Jobs is God" mentality among fanboys and speculators, and this could prove disastrous to Apple if Jobs departs all of a sudden. It's not what actually goes on in the company that'll kill Apple, but what outsiders PERCEIVE to be happening inside Apple (lack of leadership, chaos, mass suicides, etc) that'll hurt the company.
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Also, as we have learned from slashdot ( http://images.slashdot.org/topics/topicms.gif ) There Gates can't really die, he will just get service packs until he is obsoulete and then he will get his code rewritten and slapped in a brand new body!

- saska, on 11/07/2007, -3/+8I beg your pardon? Everything short of the apocalypse happened when Walt Disney died, if you want to talk about his vision for the company versus what it became.
I mean, Michael Eisner. Just let those two words sink in.
Fortunately, Pixar will save them. Linked to Jobs. Coincidence?...
- GeneHACKman, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4That's assuming Apple will still be around then.

- sporktek, on 11/07/2007, -7/+23Jeez, you believe Steve Jobs is actually going to *die*? Nah, never. He's already put in place measures to transfer his life-force into a shiny white plastic and brushed aluminum vessel after his primitive meat body has ceased to function. He will then issue commands to his minions using multicolored lights and beep-beep-boop sounds.
- kazem, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Steve's departure will be the demise of Apple, I firmly believe.
Look what happened when he was kicked out the first time.
He is a visionary, just like Bill Gates is a businessman. Both of them drive their companies.
Intel and IBM have had staying power beyond a single CEO. So perhaps if Apple grows larger and more diverse, it will obtain similar 'staying power'.
I have always pondered this question myself, so I am glad it's made the front page. - snowbooch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6i think apple has a well established culture with a vision and a purpose of its own. after jobs leaves, i'm sure there will be plenty of people who share this perspective willing to step up. if i had to compare the company to something, i would sooner compare it to porsche than microsoft. apple products are as much designer items as they are pragmatic and as long as the new leader gets that, i'm sure he'll find the minds and the means to keep the company on track
- Kazrog, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Johnathan Ive is a genius, I nominate him to succeed. But what do I know...
- teradome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"A successor to the professor?"

- giggins, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5They better find a damn good replacement.
- aratika, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Oh - it's ok. After 3 days he'll rise from the dead.

- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Apple will become a wholly own subsidy of GE and be heavily promoted on cable shopping channels in addition it will be a major brand at Odd Lots.
- Annon, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1They hand the company over to me.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -13/+8Steve Jobs != Apple
I'm sure that the company will survive.
Also, who the hell cares? - Olain, on 10/12/2007, -12/+8Steve Jobs leaves, and every apple post quits making it to the front page! :)
- mrkwst, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0All Apple, all the time.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11The iMac will be retired in his honour.
- derekknight, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I have a soft spot in my heart for Phil Schiller. He's a cool guy. Still, there will NEVER be another Walt Disney, or Steve Jobs. Jobs really is a salesman at the core. A P.T. Barnum. He can make you hang on every sentence, every word. There's not many people this day and age that have that ability.
So when it comes time for him to leave, Apple needs to go in another direction with regard to leadership. If you can't fill the shoes, don't try. Just keep making good products.
So, guys, you are witnessing the great second coming of Apple. Pay attention. They are making tech history right now. Sadly, all good things come to an end. Let's just hope we've got a lot of wave left to ride here.
It sure is a fun time to be alive and working with all this cool stuff. - Mediaright, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I asked John C. Dvorak about this when I interviewed him for my podcast at DifferentDistrict.com and he basicaly said that Apple is dead when Steve is gone because they've never pampered anyone to take over and Steve's the only one who gets this stuff in Apple's messed up beuracracy.
- gr8one, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7Yeah, but Dvorak's an idiot...so.....hmmm......
- Wardvark, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Umm... Didn't anyone see Starwars Ep3 or the Southpark where cheff is brought back? 50 years from now iSteve will still be giving keynotes.
- Furg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Agreed... Rumor has it the next iSteve is going to have a 32 TB solid-state flash memory chip, a Frontrow remote, MagSafe power connector and iSight. Then again, I got this from the same people who told me that there would be a touchscreen iPod in March.
- billyboobs34, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Question: Will they bury Steve Jobs in a cube?
- tktk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Nope, they'll cremate him with lots of magnesium and then put his ashes on display.
In a Cube.
- tktk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Nope, they'll cremate him with lots of magnesium and then put his ashes on display.
- stringycheese, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4This is the lamest story ever on digg. Nothing will happen to apple when Steve Jobs quits or dies. He's just one man. Some other guy will take over as leader of the company. Does anybody else realize that Steve probably has very little to do with day to day work at Apple? Why people worship him i will never understand.
- earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5you are actually quite wrong about this. For other CEOs this may be true, not at Apple
- Devilboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Big company CEOs are the superstars of the business world. There's good reason these people earn more money in a year than most people in a lifetime. They steer the entire company and is responsible for thousands of employees' paycheques. A CEO can make or break a company.
You think anyone can do that job? Think again.

- lasermike026, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It'll be just as bad if Jobs stays past his prime. The real issue is people do not learn. If the people at apple learned what makes Jobs a good leader of a technology company you wouldn't need Jobs.
I am I too much of an engineer when I think business and marketing people do not have a clue on how to run a company especially a technology company. I beginning to think a MBA isn't worth the paper its written on.- C00001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think a lot of times, in the immediate sense, an MBA can be a foot in the door or a bump in pay grade, but otherwise not much else. I'm all for higher education, but in business, if you can't figure it out in the time it would have taken you to get that MBA by just diving in, you probably just aren't going to.
- popularme, on 10/12/2007, -23/+4WORST.POST.EVER.

- FluffyArmada, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@popularme : screw off dude... just because something has to do with Apple doesn't mean you have to make a huge deal out of it.
Apple users like their computer, and they find this sort of stuff interesting. If you don't like reading Apple related stuff, waste your time somewhere where there isn't going to be any.
- Furg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I'm sure Steve will die of a heart attack just by looking at this digg. Its definately very creepy to see people talking about what will happen when you die; especially since its being done in such a lax and detached manner.
- tktk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What's even more creepy is that some news organizations have pre-written obits. for famous people. That way, when someone famous dies, they can pull up the pre-written text, add some recent info and then send it out.
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've got an office pool going concerning a bunch of people and how they'll die. With Jobs, I've got $100 on home accident, including electrocution, but excluding things like having a stroke, that might result in electrocution. That COD is a stroke.

- clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Hopefully he'll take Apple with him and we can get some real movement in the computer sector.
