- Dragon247, on 06/09/2008, -5/+7Not selling out just meant Apple was smart enough to make enough cell phones to meet the demand. Selling out of product doesn't do ANYONE any good.
- Murdats, on 06/09/2008, -4/+1@dragon
we dont live in a magical world where you can finish designing a product, give the details to the factory and expect to have however amount you want within 2 months.
do you think nintendo is purposly keeping stock low, or maybe it takes a bit of time to manufacture, test, package, box, ship, and display MILLIONS of units.
apple not selling out means either they kept manufacturing for 1/2 a year before they released it (would you rather line up now and get one, or line up in 4 months time and get one but those who stroll in two weeks later also get one) or there was not that much demand.
- Ninjab3ar, on 06/09/2008, -5/+10Yeah, but despite the lining up, they didn't sell out... The truth is, Apple has the ability to create hype. Don't get me wrong, they're good and make nice products, but their fans overestimate everything they do, generating A LOT of hype.
- dakbonsa, on 06/09/2008, -0/+22Why would I line up for a blackberry when my company just gives it to me?
People don't line up for a blackberry because corporation buys it hundreds of units at a time and distributes to their employees. - Ranvier, on 06/09/2008, -1/+7When you go to buy apple products at the Apple store, there aren't that many Apple stores to go to. When you go to a regular store, there's probably 10-100x as many stores carrying the item. Which do you think will form lines?

You know, having people line up for your product is good and all (creates hype). But having your product increase marketshare and earn more money for the company is even better. Apple seems to be happy about the hype and devotion of its fans while their competitors are happy about the larger sales numbers of their products (excluding mp3 players).

- chocobomog, on 06/09/2008, -1/+7And Apple nearly went bankrupt and was almost sold from 1991 to 1998 but people still called them a "competitor". Apple stock bought in the late 90's has grown 50x in the last decade. Companies can turn around.
If Apple's stock has taught us anything, now might be the time to by Palm stock so you can catch it on the rebound.- zunipus, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Just to clarify history:
Apple did not go into decline until The Billion Dollar Blunder in 1995 when they idiotically found themselves with $1,000,000,000,000 worth of Performas in their warehouses that no one wanted. This single idiotic act of mismanagement destroyed their reputation in the media, despite the fact that their top of the line Macs were at the time as much as 2X faster than concurrent Intel/AMD PCs. Apple's next self-inflicted head shot was the licensing of Mac OS to 3rd party hardware vendors, which sucked revenue out of the company and proved the case that the 'technology press' were clueless about what was good for Apple. Meanwhile Apple OS development had come a grinding halt with the death of the Copland and Gershwin OS experiments. Sales of Macs declined.
It took a brain transplant in the form the purchase of (aka the takeover by) NeXT in 1997 to get the company back on the trail of intelligence and innovation. Steve Jobs' team killed the Performa and invented the iMac. 3rd party Mac OS licensing was not renewed. They introduced Apple to Just-In-Time product production and shipping. The NeXTStep/OpenStep OS was used as the template for the Rhapsody OS, which became Mac OS X.
But despite all this it is important to note that at no time did the value of Apple's holdings go into the red. The only actual financial loss they took on the books was The Billion Dollar Blunder. After that write off they continued to make a profit. Rumors that they wanted to be sold to Sony, etc., were never verified to be true. The rumors that Apple ever considered bankruptcy or were even close to it were never true. What did happen is a lot of hatred and doom mongering in the press. Apple could have continued on for a number of years beyond 1997 if they managed not to shoot themselves in the heart.
There are books on this stuff. Visit your public library, where you can read more about Apple and other f*cked companies! It's always valuable to do your homework kids!
Personally I never lost faith in Apple's technology. I still have a 1997 PowerPC 9600 tower running my Internet server 24/7. The thing is unkillable. It was invented at Apple's lowest point during the anti-Apple press blitz. Just goes to show ya...

- chumptronic, on 06/09/2008, -3/+10Sorry, but this is pretty shaky stuff. So one or two statistics, and some quotes from highly nervous Apple competitors, are the basis for a narrative that feels logically false, and isn't really supported by any anecdotal evidence? Does anyone know someone who said, Hey, the iPhone seems cool...I'm gonna get me a Blackberry! This sort of correlative journalism kind of gives the rest of us a bad name. This is a little like blaming the iPhone for the housing market collapse. Hey, they happened at around the same time, right?
- KH47, on 06/09/2008, -1/+3Well for me it was more like the iPhone seems cool... but the Blackberry Curve is cool and will work a lot better for my purposes.
- chumptronic, on 06/09/2008, -2/+0Wait, you mean you really did get a Blackberry Curve because of the iPhone? If so, maybe I'm off the mark.
- kefkaantakrist, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1I don't know about this particular example, but imagine if someone goes to buy a PS3 and they are sold out or whatever but there's an XBox360. They realize many of the same features (plays GTAIV, goes online, etc) from the PS3 are on the X360. They buy the 360 and live happily ever after.
I think the same could be true of the iPhone. Moreover, if someone sees an iPhone, because of all the hype and ad dollars behind it, and decide they like it, then if they see something else LIKE the iPhone but better they will be an easier sell.- Elranzer, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1Even more true once the inevitable MGS4 port for 360 is released.

I cannot imagine showing up at any store, as this article suggests, wanting to buy and iPhone and finding out there's a cheaper option called the Blackberry and thinking it's a viable option. If you're shopping iPhone you're getting iPhone.
The increase in BB sales is primarily due to the longer start and greater penetration of the device which has had years of almost unrivaled marketplace dominance.
I'm not saying BB is going down but to say that RIM and Palm are 'excited' or 'licking their chops' at the prospect of a new iPhone is a highly dubious suggestion.- turbodiesel, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2so the fact that Palms and Rims sales went up after the iPhone was released means nothing?
And there are a lot of non business people carrying Curves, and not too many businesses give their employees Curves.
Apple will sell a lot of iPhones, but a lot of people don't like it, or don't like AT&T, or like something else better. It's not like music players; there is a lot more solid competition this time. - cjh79, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3That's exactly how it happened for me. Saw iPhone, thought it was cool, decided to compare it against other smartphones, ended up deciding the BB curve was the much better option for me. And much, much less expensive.
But if it wasn't for the iphone piquing my interest in having a does-it-all device, I am quite sure I wouldn't have even started considering smartphones. - staxofmax, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3My cell phone contract is up this month and I was considering replacing my old cell phone with an iPhone thinking that it was unique in its capabilities. However, I shopped around and found the BlackBerry 8820 on Amazon for $150 with a two year service contract w/T-Mobile. It may not have the same asthetic appeal as the iPhone, but it syncs with Outlook, is compatible with Microsoft Exchange Server, has a GPS receiver, a qwerty keyboard, and is $250 cheaper.
If not for the exposure the iPhone has received I probably wouldn't have even considered a smartphone. But the fact is there are many iPhone competitors out there, some of which even surpass the iPhone in some capabilities.

- StevesJobs, on 06/09/2008, -2/+2a $200 iPhone is good (relatively speaking) for your wallet and apple...
- MacParrot, on 06/09/2008, -4/+4Well you know you don't HAVE to buy it
- nafa228, on 06/09/2008, -4/+2The Apple store is shutdown?
- KSUdesigner, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3The Apple store is always shutdown the day of a keynote.
- kukiweed, on 06/09/2008, -11/+6I had an iPhone and I sold it, found it too boring for the price paid.. Then, for half the price, I got a SE w950, which I like a lot more, and not just because it doesn't scream "look at me, I'm so cool" like that apple brick.
- CoMpUtErITGuY, on 06/09/2008, -4/+2Exactly. People here want looks over functionality.

- commiecat, on 06/09/2008, -0/+4I'm interested to see how the iPhone interacts with Exchange. Personally, I'd probably rather have the iPhone than a BB -- but for corporate integration, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server makes setting up and managing the devices so easy. I think that's the area that Apple needs to target if they want to start pulling market share away from RIM.
- NoozeHound, on 06/09/2008, -1/+1They'll presumably ***** it up by insisting the server is a Mac.
- dukeeeey, on 06/09/2008, -1/+13the iphone was a total flop in the uk
- bumblefoot, on 06/09/2008, -0/+5i only know of 2 people who actually bought an iphone in the uk, and they took them back after a couple of days and both got sony ericsson k850is
- Schmich, on 06/09/2008, -0/+4I have yet to see one in Switzerland and Sweden.
- nedy78, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3The UK is hardcore supreme!
- rocketz, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2My sentiments exactly
- jferrari, on 06/09/2008, -7/+2It was the fastest selling phone ever in the UK, not exactly a flop.. the only reason you don't see more is they ran out of stock.
- smartazz, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1I need to move to the UK.
- digjam, on 06/09/2008, -0/+7Here's the theory thats causing RIM to take up the market share:
1. Apple has stimulated a smartphone Non Buyer into buying one.
2. He checks out his carriers store.
3a. IF its ATT, there are millions of other options like blackjack, MotoQ, BB Curve etc, which are selling on the side at around $99 in ATT store and for free at major retailers like Amazon etc. While iPhones are selling at ATT and Apple stores only and priced at $399-$499. More penetration in the market, more sales Simple!!!
3b. If the carrier is not ATT, they are simply screwed, unless they want to break the contract ($249) and buy a new phone ($499), which doesnt make financial sense, unless your dad is Rich.
4. So simply, a buyer ends up with either a MotoQ, Blackjack, RIM, or Palm or simply waits for his/her contract to be over with Tmobile or Verizon etc, or waits till the price drops.
The total control on the market is not doing any good for Apple, if they want to gain the market, sell more phones simple. The only way you can do that, is to flood the market without any restrictions.
The first spite of purchasers were all Apple fanboys and fangirls who simply do whatever Steve asks them to. So basically in first 6 months (Jun-Dec'07) most of the fans already bought all they could afford, therefore the sales dwindled in next 6 months (Jan - Jun'08)
Therefore RIM picked up sales, but if Apple reduces the price and make it more competetive, iPhone will turn out into ANOTHER PS3 for sure. - josephneaves, on 06/09/2008, -0/+9The "Wow is that an iPhone" factor is certainly a huge bonus for Apple. Its like 5 years ago when everyone was, "Wow, dude is that a RAZR?" If you have cool factor laced all over your product, you are made of win.
- BoonTobias, on 06/09/2008, -1/+3razr haha
- brownrecluse888, on 06/09/2008, -5/+2People should realize that in the very short time that apple has been selling phones they are already the number 2 seller of smart phones in the united states.
- mooninite, on 06/09/2008, -0/+4Uhm..... #1 Nokia, #2 RIM, #3 Apple
Even though this link is for world stats (in b4 world stats) this goes for the US, too.
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/06/06/appl ...
From an apple site no less! (and I'm not an apple fan, oooooh digg down coming *sigh*)
- mooninite, on 06/09/2008, -0/+4Uhm..... #1 Nokia, #2 RIM, #3 Apple
- xero69, on 06/09/2008, -3/+2Makes perfect sense, iPhone helps generate more foot traffic in the retail stores. More traffic usually means more sales since many people are impulsive or need a new phone anyways. Every American needs to keep spending or the recession will get us, so go get ya a new iPhone! lol
- stasis88, on 06/09/2008, -7/+5I hate Apple products, they make me want to puke.
- smartazz, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1No you don't, you just hate the people who think that anything that is not an apple product sucks aka Smug *****
- Ossuary, on 06/09/2008, -0/+5I stick by my comment of the best thing about the iPhone is that is caused other phone makers to wake up and at least TRY to innovate. They are finally catching on. Now to just do something about those damned carriers themselves...
- atb12688, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1Are they going to be available today?
- nedy78, on 06/09/2008, -0/+0Ah......pure unadulterated capitalism. Gotta love it!
- KH47, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2When a Super Wal-mart (one with a grocery department) replaced our old wal-mart in our town, the grocery store I worked at was worried about the competition. After a week we noticed a big increase in sales due to more people coming in to town to go to wal-mart, but then shopping at our store for the better prices and selection.
Which makes this story easy for me to believe.- Szandor, on 06/09/2008, -2/+1Just a little fyi: Wal-Mart Supercenter.
- KH47, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1man am i embarrassed
- Szandor, on 06/09/2008, -2/+1Just a little fyi: Wal-Mart Supercenter.
- runeasgar, on 06/09/2008, -2/+3I don't care. If this helps Palm and RIM, more power to them. I know it will sell well for Apple, and I am definitely getting one.
All this hate just needs to go away. (Honestly though, the iPhone is the ONLY smartphone I would consider as a Mac owner anyway, and I think most other Mac owners agree.)- aeon2012, on 06/09/2008, -2/+1You ***** Apple drone.
- mrBitch, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Let me get this straight : so, if you have a Windows Mobile phone that synchs & integrates really well with your Windows based PC, then this means you are a Microsoft drone ?
- aeon2012, on 06/09/2008, -2/+1You ***** Apple drone.
- YeahMan, on 06/09/2008, -0/+4I love apple products, they are amazing and innovative...
That said, they're just too expensive for me. Being a college student, I can't afford to buy any apple products, especially now with the price of gas rising.
If Apple is successful right now, they can certainly afford to lower their price, and if they do they'll certainly see a surge in sales. - trollick, on 06/09/2008, -4/+4So... What is this iPhone thing? Is it a phone of some kind? If so... why is everybody so excited about it?
- elambing, on 06/09/2008, -4/+1i know that the iphone made me want a smartphone. but im not settling for anything less than an iphone so hah, blackberry.
ill never be caught dead with a windows mobile machine either - karan1003, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3Blackberry? a competitor? Anybody seriously considering a blackberry knows that the two have totally different purposes. The blackberry is a business phone - no ifs about it. The iphone, well, isn't.
- mrBitch, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Correct, the iPhone (prior to the release of the iPhone App Store & MS Exchange Synch integration) was not a business phone.
- dmcbride6, on 06/09/2008, -1/+3I dont know who they are kidding. All the other phone companies are ***** their pants right now with the announcement of an enterprise ready easy to use 3g phone WITH gps and all for $200.
Please bitches.- Eccles, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1I hope you're right. These companies need a good swift kick. Apple may achieve what I was hoping Google Android might do.
- greydout, on 06/09/2008, -1/+2Hmm... So everyone's marketshare is increasing... that IS good news... This non-zero sum system is awesome! I hope to get 120% of a market one day.
