Xserve RAID Discontinued?
macrumors.com — Along with the announcements today of the iPod Shuffle capacity bumps and XSan 2, some users are realizing that Apple's Xserve RAID solution has completely disappeared from Apple's online store.

- TechMundial, on 02/20/2008, -2/+0Same thing I've wondered. Apple has a HUGE chance to displace some not-so-great software in the broadcast market. Packages like FORK and OCTOPUS could get a run for their money. I wish Apple would just say something about it!
- dacapoalfine, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5It wouldn't surprise me if Apple was losing buttloads of money with the Xserve RAID. To add SAS support would have been expensive. I think I would still prefer a SATA XServe RAID to this Promise VTrak.
Apple itself isn't going to NAB this year, but those who are going typically love to show off their rack mounts. The Xserve RAID was without question the best-looking computer ever to be screwed into a rack in a dark closet.
Rest In Peace - habu, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Just priced an X-RAID out on the 5th and started the PO process... going to start that again lol oh well... The new Promise VTrak systems are far faster it seems then the old X-RAIDs. Anyone have any comments on the Promise solution since I have not even started to look at them before today?
- iPhrankie, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Well, you'll need to spend twice the amount to get the same amount of storage you would have gotten from the Xserve RAID. I have not confirmed this, but you'll also most likely lose the native Apple RAID monitoring and configuration software. Anyone that has used this software will tell you what a nice solution it was. Also, it looks like you may lose the nice status lights the Xserve RAID has which easily tell you if you have any hardware problems and what kind load the RAID is currently under. Apple did a nice job on their RAID product. You got a lot of bang (GB) for your buck. It's a sad day for Apple.
Xserve RAID 10.5TB = $14,149
Promise VTrak E-Class 6TB = $11,9995 - TechMundial, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1My only complaint about the XSREVE RAID is that the java admin app takes too long to load/update sometimes. However, it is quite handy for admin use because you don't need to run to a server room every time to check status messages or even the LEDs since it is all in the admin client.

- garywatson, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3If you want a 42TB RAID shelf for Apple which is visually compatible with Xserve and is high quality, have a look at this: http://nexsan.com/apple/

- RSTaichi, on 02/20/2008, -1/+2it was a nice idea, bummer.
- TechMundial, on 02/20/2008, -0/+0I noticed that some Apple XSERVE RAID customers have dropped the XSAN Metadata controllers which are the "brains" of the XSAN for a product by ADIC called StorNext that runs on a commodity x86 Linux metadata controller independent of Apple hardware. Then suddenly Apple comes out with a new version of XSAN client software and now some new hardware?? Something must be up...... Not to mention Final Cut Server seems to be AWOL..... What the HECK is Apple doing to/for the broadcast industry segment?
