iphonejtag.blogspot.com — "First of all, HUGE thanks to TA_Mobile and IMTH for getting us the secpack from 1.1.3 Also, thanks to psp_sully for giving me a 1.1.2 OTB phone to play with. Without them there would be no unlock, and no blog post." - Awesome

- elrond1999, on 01/19/2008, -0/+3Now all we need is a bug in the bootloader to allow software unlocks :)
- Krmby, on 01/19/2008, -0/+3Nope. A vulnerability already found in 4.6 bootloader and they already have secpack so: All we need is someone to write the flasher for baseband.
And i think it is a few hours away :)- gsotocast, on 01/19/2008, -0/+0Few hours and my overprized OTB 1.1.2 iTouch will come to life!!!

- macatak, on 01/19/2008, -0/+2there are instructions on www.ipodtouchmaster.com on how to down grade to 1.1.1 if you accidentally upgraded.
- ZeroQuest, on 01/19/2008, -1/+1From that page:
"UPDATE: It seems that this does NOT work on the iPhone, when you download you will get an incorrect SIM error no matter what. so sorry about this mistake but i dont have an iphone to test it with."

- phoomp, on 01/19/2008, -7/+1Only those unconcerned with unlocking are on 1.1.3
- bigsteve, on 01/19/2008, -1/+4There were lots of folks who bought iPhones that were 1.1.2 out of the box, this has been the majority of purchases for the last few months...
- gsotocast, on 01/19/2008, -0/+0Me, for example...

- mogebier, on 01/19/2008, -9/+19Give it a week and Apple will screw you guys again and kill the unlock.
Then give it a few days and someone will hack it.
Apple just need to pull their head out and for once, let consumers do what they want with the products they purchase.- zetsurin, on 01/19/2008, -5/+10I notice you got dugg down for that, however if you had replaced Apple with Sony and the Digg masses would have suddenly supported you. Diabolical really.
- mogebier, on 01/19/2008, -0/+6Good point.
- mogebier, on 01/19/2008, -0/+6Good point.
- phoomp, on 01/19/2008, -6/+4Dugg because Apple is just as bad as Sony
- Sigma0, on 01/19/2008, -2/+0What an eloquently reasoned argument, sir.
- 0xFEEDFACE, on 01/19/2008, -1/+4"Apple just need to pull their head out and for once, let consumers do what they want with the products they purchase."
Perhaps the reason they fix it is that it's one of the contractual obligations in their contract with AT&T. Which would you have: Apple having to play the DRM game, despite the fact they'll lose in the end; or no iPhone?
Apple had to agree not to turn a blind eye to FairPlay cracks as part of their RIAA deal -- I'm sure AT&T's got a similar clause for unlocking tucked away in their contract.
Besides, given the popularity of the device, it's likely that the unlocks will stay relatively current -- it's not as though Apple can magically upgrade all the phones without your permission, so the only downside is that you get your updates a little slower.- mogebier, on 01/19/2008, -3/+4The only reason why they have a contract with AT&T is that they were being even more greedy by having an exclusive carrier, rather than just selling it to people for use on whatever system they chose to use it on.
Apple seems to always get a pass for doing the same business practices that every other large company uses, and that most consumers really hate.- mrsteveman1, on 01/19/2008, -1/+1There really isn't any way to do that though, apple walked into a completely ***** up market where nothing is compatible and phones were nearly worthless. They had to find a way to be successful.
They chose the safe route, and yes they get profit for doing so. The AT&T contract partially funds future development on the iPhone right now.- mogebier, on 01/19/2008, -0/+2The phone system is all screwed up because every company thinks for themselves and will not agree on a standard.
They are all douche bags.

- breezytrees, on 01/19/2008, -0/+2Apple could have started their own network, bought massive amounts of minutes from the current carriers, and sell those minutes at a slightly higher price to their customers... just like boost mobile, alltel and cricket for example.
The reason why apple is with ATT right now is because ATT knew that the iphone would sell a *****. ATT paid apple for this guaranteed surge in business. Apple accepted because they saw this giant check from ATT that was only cashable if they signed an exclusive 2 year contract. This giant check from ATT was evidently more than the amount of money apple would make if they sold the iphone without a contract. End of Story.

- betobeto, on 01/19/2008, -4/+2Perhaps if they didn't need to be in bed with AT&T in the first place and U.S's carrier policy were as liberal as that of other countries, Apple would not mind selling an unlocked iPhone, as companies like Nokia do, and not having to go through this unlocking ordeal. So don't blame Apple - blame U.S. money-grubbing, monopolist telcos.
- drgmdp, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1ahem... apple is the only one blocking their phones, amirite? not nokia, not sony, not moto...
- gsotocast, on 01/19/2008, -0/+0that's just because noone has ever made a phone liked by so much people, and this was a big opportunity to make $$$!
- breezytrees, on 01/19/2008, -1/+1ahem... you say nokia sells unlocked phones? wait, where does nokia sell unlocked phones? wait, do they sell unlocked phones in america, the country that has U.S. money-grubbing, monopolist telcos?
your argument=fail.- bigsteve, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1Both of your arguments fail. Nokia sells unlocked phones. I found this store right from Nokia.com
http://nokia.letstalk.com/product/browse.htm?pgId= ...
They even had a checkbox in the search criteria "include unlocked phones." Look at the end of that URL, even.
It was Apple's decision to go with AT&T. They had scouted out to Verizon first but they didn't bite. Apple has a contracted agreement with their shareholders to make them as much money possible. They went to AT&T, and said "we have this phone, and we would like to enter into an agreement with you. People are going to want it, and it'll sell you lots of contracts. In return, we want $x a month per contract connected to our device." Econ 101 here folks. Poor Apple, having to deal with those evil telcos. Get a clue.

- bigsteve, on 01/19/2008, -0/+2I didn't dig him up or down because the subsequent updates are optional. The important factor here was the out of the box baseband and bootloader version. Those are much much harder to adjust than the firmware level that you flash with iTunes.

- mattsonster, on 01/19/2008, -3/+5Good news, everyone!
- eekfuh, on 01/19/2008, -0/+27You forgot to mention this is a HARDWARE unlock similar to the first iPhone unlock.
It's a pretty difficult process to complete.- Ireland, on 01/19/2008, -1/+2TurboSIM costs money, but it sure is less involved. And worked for me. Next2SIM if you wanna know.
- Crash1337, on 01/19/2008, -2/+3why would you want to risk doing something like this when a software unlock will most likely be released soon?
- thefirelane, on 01/19/2008, -0/+9What does OTB stand for? I'm presuming it means shipping with 1.1.2

"1.1.3 was released on January 15. It was jailbreaked at jan 19th (read/write access), but nok unlocked - DON'T upgrade yet! Secpack from 1.1.3 has been found."- indiekiduk, on 01/19/2008, -2/+91.1.3 jailbreak? Where?
- nunofgs, on 01/19/2008, -0/+6They say they are preparing it. The dev team wiki will be updated when it is ready.
- neiltc13, on 01/19/2008, -1/+4I hope it is easy to do, my iPhone is waiting for a jailbreak.

- neiltc13, on 01/19/2008, -3/+1Next stop: unlock the secrets of digg.
- unionaire, on 01/19/2008, -3/+1This is a hardware unlock...and no where in this unlock has anything related to the 1.1.3 firmware except when you fail you can still use Apple's new firmware to fix the Wi-Fi problem... why go through the troubles if you can get a sticker like stealth sim for like $20 to use third party sim without unlock
- zetsurin, on 01/19/2008, -1/+2Where are those SIMs for $20??? I see them on ebay for anywhere from $60 - 100 US. Also, it's been pretty widely reported that 1.1.3 prevents them from working. That along should bring the price of the things down to something more realistic though.
But I agree, one of them would be better than F'ing with the baseband. - breezytrees, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1uh yea $20? uh where? please tell us.

- zetsurin, on 01/19/2008, -0/+3Since I can just use an O2 PAYG SIM (UK) thus avoiding the contract, I can live without a full unlock for now. Waiting for the 1.1.3 jailbreak method coming out soon, although I will still wait a week to let the guinea pigs test it for me.
iPhone firmware: Tested on humans.- fucayama, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1zetsurin, how did you get the PAYG SIM working? did the phone just need to be jailbroke/activated first, and do you know if a regular pay monthly O2 SIM would work as well
- StevesJobs, on 01/19/2008, -4/+01.1.2 was already 'unlockable' via TurboSim. Seeing as this is still a hardware unlock, I'm not that impressed.
- kris33, on 01/19/2008, -4/+81.1.3 has been jailbroken too:
