iPhone 3G Now All But Sold Out in 38 States
appleinsider.com — With the iPhone 3G not even ten days old, virtually all of the Apple retail store stores open within the United States are without any examples of the device to sell on July 21st.

- blackinthmiddle, on 07/21/2008, -6/+12I've ordered mine through the AT&T store and it'll get there, well, today (since it's now Monday). Hopefully there's no issues with it. The last thing I need is, "Sir, this one's defective. We'll order you another one. See you next month!"
- poiuytrewq44, on 07/21/2008, -6/+1I've heard there have been enormous lines at the apple stores, but the AT&T stores have just had a slow trickle of customers and still have plenty in stock.
- cmorriss, on 07/21/2008, -1/+8AT&T stores have plenty in stock?? Where did you hear that? Based on the macrumors forums, AT&T has been completely sold out the first weekend pretty much everywhere. They started taking direct fulfillment orders and are only about 30% of the way through fulfilling them.
- hansonc, on 07/21/2008, -1/+4I ordered two over the weekend and was told 10-21 business days. I had the choice of buying directly from AT&T and waiting or going to the Apple store in the same mall in the middle of the night and still standing in line for 3-4 hours.... I'm pretty sure if I were standing in line at an Apple store for 3-4 hours I'd end up in a fight with someone so it just seemed easier to order from AT&T
- blackinthmiddle, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2^cmorriss, yeah, AT&T didn't have nearly the amount of stock that the Apple stores had. They were all pretty much sold out within a few hours of the first day. In my case, I stupidly stood on line at the apple store and had the box in hand before being told that since my account is tied to my job, I'd have to do the upgrade with AT&T. None of the stores in my area had any stock left, so I ordered it (last week Saturday) and I'm just getting it today. They've only gone through 30% of stock? Wow, is all I have to say to that!
^hansonc, 10-21 days? Damn, I was told 7-10 business day. With weekends in play, it might be the same thing. - gourami, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2You're lucky to be getting it today blackinthmiddle. I ordered mine via DF on the 12th and it's still on backorder. It could be another month for all I know.
- poiuytrewq44, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Well I guess I'm sorry. The AT&T Store near frickin madison square garden was quite full of them.
- jabberwolf, on 07/21/2008, -14/+3Nice but this is another iphone spam and well...
We really dont give a *****, honest !!!- dacheetah, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1"We"?
Clearly someone gives a *****, otherwise it wouldn't be front-paged.
And if you don't want to read iPhone spam, why are you reading articles about iPhones being sold out, let alone commenting?
- dacheetah, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1"We"?
- yikiad, on 07/21/2008, -0/+6i ordered mine on the 11th, and got in on tuesday the 15th at the at&t store.
- jerful, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I signed up for "direct fulfillment" through the AT&T store, and they told me it would be 10-21 days. I got it in 2 days (signed up Thursday night and got it Saturday morning). The secret protip is to order the WHITE 16gb iphone. It has far less demand than the black ones for whatever reason. Probably because most early adopters are matrix fans.
- phatphil, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1I ordered the black 16 gb today with direct fulfillment.
I was told by the rep that black and white are about equally easy to come by... I suppose it could vary depending on location though.
- phatphil, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1I ordered the black 16 gb today with direct fulfillment.
- poiuytrewq44, on 07/21/2008, -6/+1I've heard there have been enormous lines at the apple stores, but the AT&T stores have just had a slow trickle of customers and still have plenty in stock.
- DanielQ, on 07/21/2008, -9/+4At first appearance being sold out in 38 states sounds like an accomplishment of blockbuster sales to me. However, I think it's mostly poor planning by Apple and poor management by AT&T.
I'm in Illinois and will be getting mine this week.- Dralite, on 07/21/2008, -3/+8I have to disagree... I think it is just a matter of not being able to keep up... when has any electronic that sells like the iphone does (i.e. game consoles) ever stay in stock?
- mookiemoomoo, on 07/21/2008, -1/+4Couldn't agree more Dralite! After all we've seen this happen with a plethora of electronics including the Wii
- DanielQ, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1Perhaps this is true.
However, when an AT&T store gets only about ten phones, that appears, to me at least, to be poor planning.
- brundlefly76, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Last year the opening weekend only did about 200,000 for the original iPhone - so the fact that they had over 1M on hand for opening weekend this year was an ambitious projection.
- DanielQ, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Yes, but that's worldwide in many, many countries.
- jerful, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1It's not nearly as easy to manufacture millions of cutting edge electronic devices as you think it is.
- brundlefly76, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Its not a matter of ease - its a matter of projections + lead time.
It doesnt matter how hard or easy it is - its how many units can be produced a month, then calculate how many months you need before launch with padding.
- PolishLogic, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Seems to me like they're taking a bite out of Nintendo's marketing strategy. Keep them understocked so they appear to be a "must have" item because they're always sold out.
- Dralite, on 07/21/2008, -3/+8I have to disagree... I think it is just a matter of not being able to keep up... when has any electronic that sells like the iphone does (i.e. game consoles) ever stay in stock?
- Fuxsit, on 07/21/2008, -13/+5Why we wait in line....
http://www.peoplejam.com/blogs/why-we-wait-line-ip ...- TheRedCoat, on 07/21/2008, -3/+5Wow, what a prick the person who wrote that was.
It's one thing writing a semi-satirical piece (I think he was aiming for that, can't be too sure though), it's another to just outright insult people for asking questions.- sdcarter, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3You remember when your teacher said "There's no such thing as a stupid question?" She was lying. Now, beyond stupid questions, there's something worse... stupid people asking stupid questions. You know that no matter how you answer, they'll never really understand.
- wildsnake, on 07/21/2008, -2/+3People wait in line at disneyland too. So?
- TheRedCoat, on 07/21/2008, -3/+5Wow, what a prick the person who wrote that was.
- gametavern, on 07/21/2008, -4/+15I know I still can't find one. Oh well, I can wait.
- Asim0, on 07/21/2008, -3/+3all i want is a 32GB iphone, that's all.
- clith, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1I'm with you there -- although I would prefer a 64 GB model, since my 60 GB iPod 5G is almost full..
- PosedMagnet, on 07/21/2008, -6/+0No, you can't.
- lordtyros, on 07/21/2008, -0/+6DON'T TELL ME WHAT I CAN'T DO
- Asim0, on 07/21/2008, -3/+3all i want is a 32GB iphone, that's all.
- billjimbob, on 07/21/2008, -20/+37I like how all of the AT&T stores around me aren't getting any more shipments for 21-28 days, but each Apple store is getting them once every few days. So instead of spreading lines around the Apple and AT&T stores, Apple would rather have 100 people lined up outside their store, while they take 25 minutes per person.
***** you, Apple.- jabberwolf, on 07/21/2008, -8/+6How else do you think Apple propaganda can work?!
They have to give the appearance that is sooooo much in demand
And you can only do that if there are lines. - mookiemoomoo, on 07/21/2008, -13/+8Grow up, moron
- gimmeslack12, on 07/21/2008, -5/+2Second.
- Misaiato, on 07/21/2008, -7/+13Bill and Jabber - you're both idiots. If Apple forces people to come into the Apple store for iPhones the chances are much better they'll sell other products as well.
What Apple products is AT&T carrying besides the iPhone?
You're saying '***** you' to a company publicly owned that uses a highly sought-after product to try and make some tangential sales AND keep it's own retail stores profitable?
Yeah - what the ***** were they thinking trying to make money for their shareholders? (Myself among them)- DiggzDE, on 07/21/2008, -1/+51. You won't see any physical payout unless the company decides to issue dividends. And even then, preferred stockholders will retain more rights to that money than you (likely a common stockholder). So there is a chance you may not even see a cent when dividends are paid out if there are enough preferred stockholders waiting around.
2. Apple's decision to under manufacture the iPhone likely had financial reasons behind it. I highly doubt that it was an accident to not produce enough units. This is a financial strategy to boost demand and push various methods of bringing in additional revenue. If you noticed, this release is quite well opposite from the initial one (where iPhones were able to be found days and even weeks after release). They have researchers and surveyors whose job is to figure out demand and then figure out a working game plan for best profit (sometimes straight up initial sales won't yield the most, especially with an upgraded product release and a longer plan can be issued for best profit margins).
3.The board of directors really don't give two ***** about you, Joe Schmoe, the common stock holder. While they are expected to do what is best for the shareholders of the company, they will do whatever they feel is necessary to make the most profit for themselves and people directly associated with the company. So if you believe that their first priority is to "make money for their shareholders" you are sadly mistaken. The anti-trust laws in place to protect shareholders aren't their main concern. As long as they keep doing legal dealings and trying to make a profit for themselves and the company directly, they could give a rats ass about the average shareholder since all you see is them making profit, and for you, that must mean they are doing well. So as long as they are happy, they know the can neglect you, the shareholder, all they need under the guise that it will be beneficial to EVERYONE.
4. To say that Apple is purposely keeping the iPhone at their stores only in order to make "tangential[sic] sales AND keep it's own retail stores profitable" is laughable. You must be forgetting about the massive collection of overpriced computers, media players, ipods, and software that they sell as well. All for a very, let me repeat this, VERY healthy profit. The move to keep the iPhone mainly in Apple stores is not one merely for cash in hand (you seem to forget that they still make a profit off of iPhones sold at AT&T stores as well). There is a financial reason behind the move, sure, but it isn't the main reason. One major cause is control. Selling in-house instead of through a 3rd party offers much better control over sales figures, sales methods, as well as the all important "give me all your personal information for this product" trick. There are other factors involved as well, and while they are a little deeper, I can guarantee that most of them DON'T come down to simply "making money for their shareholders".
Get some financial business savy. Maybe take a class or two on the financial aspects of large corporations and investing. It could help teach you just how unimportant you are in the business world as a common stockholder. - TheYoshi, on 07/21/2008, -1/+3Let's see, it appears that Apple operates at a 15-20% profit margin: http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ks?s=Aapl Doesn't seem all that horrible to me. Besides, what's wrong with making a profit, isn't that what all businesses are supposed to do? Sheesh
- DiggzDE, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Never said making a profit was bad (don't believe anyone did). I merely pointed out the massive douche ignorance of Misaiato in believing that Apple actually CARES about customers or even average shareholders.
- AndrewWiggin, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1He never said Apple is trying to make money because they care about shareholders. But Apple (like every company) wants to make money for their shareholders to look good on the bottom line. I don't think anything Misaiato said had anything to do with Apple being altruistic at all, they're just doing it to make money is what he's saying. You can take that negatively or positively, I don't care, but that's the obvious truth.
- DiggzDE, on 07/21/2008, -1/+51. You won't see any physical payout unless the company decides to issue dividends. And even then, preferred stockholders will retain more rights to that money than you (likely a common stockholder). So there is a chance you may not even see a cent when dividends are paid out if there are enough preferred stockholders waiting around.
- conquest, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2I ordered mine last Tuesday here in Atlanta and was told "best case Friday". I had hopes it would show up over the weekend but no such luck. I was told yesterday 10 - 21 days. What I want more than anything is a way to track when my phone will be here. AT&T doesn't allow you to track your order online if your transferring your phone number, you have to call an 800 number.
- helliottlaw, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2...someone said "***** apple" and didn't get dugg down? oh my ***** God the end is nigh...
- jasonj75, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1The launch of the 1st iPhone was a demonstration of how Apple got it right and AT&T got it wrong.
3G was a demonstration of them both getting it wrong.

It's. Just. A. Phone. You. Tools.- Bhatch514, on 07/21/2008, -0/+8To be honest it obviously does more then just a phone. If it was just a phone then i AGPS and the iPod and the WIFI would be on something else.
- lohphat, on 07/21/2008, -2/+2It can't even act a a tethered modem for your laptop when no wifi or hardware is available -- and no replaceable battery. Add to that the monopoly carrier agreement and it's a fools errand.

- ShooterMcGavin, on 07/21/2008, -1/+16I put in my Direct Fulfillment Order at my local AT&T store on release friday (there isn't an Apple Store in the state). I was amazed at how quickly I got it. They shipped it on that following Monday, and I picked it up on Tuesday afternoon. Have been playing with it ever since.
I was really surprised at how smooth everything went, considering that I was the first Direct Fulfillment customer they had and the guy was figuring it out as he went. All in all, I've got no complaints.- cyberwiz01, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Direct Fulfillment for me as well, but I guess I made the mistake of waiting until Saturday morning (7/12) to stop by and order. My phone is still on backorder, but what irks me is that some people who ordered their phones as late as Tuesday already have received theirs. I wonder why AT&T isn't going in chronological order? Anyways, the webpage now shows that my phone is no longer backordered so hopefully it will ship soon.
- ShooterMcGavin, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5That's how mine went... I refreshed that damn order page probably 500 times over the weekend hoping to see the "backordered" go away. It finally did Monday sometime. I didn't get confirmation that it had shipped until early Tuesday, the day it was scheduled to be delivered.
Then, I spent Tuesday refreshing the fedex tracking page to see when it was actually delivered to the store.
No, I wasn't very productive at work. - conquest, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Shooter the AT&T page only gives me the error below. Are you using a new number or a transferred number?
"We're sorry, but the information you entered was not recognized by our systems. Your order may not yet be available or the information may have been entered incorrectly. Please try again." - cyberwiz01, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1@ShooterMcGavin (BTW Happy Gilmore is awesome!)
Did you order an 8 or 16 gig? Black or white? - ShooterMcGavin, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1@conquest - That page didn't work when I plugged in my phone number or my own billing zip code. It only worked when I entered the order confirmation number they emailed to me and the zip code of the store they were shipping too.
@cyberwiz01 - 16 Gig black. Love it. - conquest, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1@shooter I've tried everything: order confirmation, phone number, billing phone number ... guess they have me in the system wrong.

- RC212V, on 07/21/2008, -7/+26Big f'n deal. Other hot electronics products have sold out in the first week too. Heck, it's still not easy to walk into a store and find a Wii. If iPhones are still selling out 6 months from now, that will be news.
- tomatogoodness, on 07/21/2008, -4/+3The only news that would come out of a 6 month long sell-out would be that apple is mud-butting they're stocking process.
The only news here period is that Apple underestimated their demand. Or did they just create more buzz? Who knows.
- tomatogoodness, on 07/21/2008, -4/+3The only news that would come out of a 6 month long sell-out would be that apple is mud-butting they're stocking process.
- Zonks, on 07/21/2008, -14/+6...I just walked into the Apple store in Boulder, CO the other day and saw them selling them. In fact a guy walked in and got one from the shelf.
This article seems a little incorrect.- lordtyros, on 07/21/2008, -1/+5Do you know how many states there are in the USA? Fifty. So if they are having stock problems in 38 states, do you know what that means? That means that there is available stock in the other states. Do you know how many states that would be. Let's see... fify minus thirty-eight equals twelve! That means that twelve states have no iPhone problems! Do you think it's possible that you live in one of those twelve states? Because there's a decent probability that you do. As a matter of fact, the probability is something like twelve out of fifty. Do you know how I got that? I just took twelve states with iPhones and put it on top of fifty states total. I drew a little line between them. That line means "divided by". Shall I continue...?
- digitaldivinci, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Overkill.
- Nothlit, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1Too bad Apple only has stores in 38 states...
- politicalslug, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1You're lying. They don't keep them on the shelf. They keep them in the back room so people won't steal them. Buried for LIES.

- sandman979, on 07/21/2008, -24/+15Please stop posting iPhone *****. It's so ***** up the way you jackasses keep licking apple's balls over and over again. It's sickening. It's a ***** phone dammit! No more, no less.
- kidathinnes, on 07/21/2008, -3/+5Apparently, the articles are still attracting ***** like you....
- wildsnake, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5Why don't you just use the ***** digg filter and filter out Apple
- ravage86, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4I understand why you're frusterated. You stumbled into an iPhone discussion and can't seem to find your way out. Well, the quickest and safest way would be to click your browser's "home" button. Unfortunately, none of us here can do it for you. While it may seem, at first glance, that posting a comment is your only option, it unfortunately isn't the solution to your problem. You have better options available to you. I suggest closing your browser all together until you can find someone who is willing to assist you the next time you need to use the internet. Perhaps an internet cafe where the staff could assist you with internet fundamentals, or if that doesn't work, a certified private nurse who has experience with the internet could watch after you and insure you don't run into this problem again. I'm sure, in time, you'll get the hang of it.
- sandman979, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1you 3 can lick my balls too
- ravage86, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2You're confused. It's not the "reply" button you want to click, it's the "home" button. If all else fails, try the little X at the top right of the window. I assure you, clicking reply will never stop iPhone discussions from showing up. You need to close the window for that to happen.

- b4cheung, on 07/21/2008, -7/+6... so what happened to the massive boycott diggers were going on and on about?
- skidooer, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2I thought that was for Rogers only? And they offered a new plan after the threat was made.
- AndrewWiggin, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1I was about to claim that a massive boycott from diggers wouldn't affect anything, but now that I think about it, with the iPhone popularity on digg, and digg's popularity in general, it would amount to a significant number of non buyers.
- pentiumii, on 07/21/2008, -9/+0i live in michigan and i know there not sold out here ever aT&T store i been in to has plenty of them
the 2 apple store i been in also nowhere close to being sold out
hell apple store i went to did every but suck my dick trying to get me to buy 1 - jabberwolf, on 07/21/2008, -12/+3Sandman they are only licking Apple's ballz because they have temporarily stopped sucking off Steve Jobs !
I'm in SF and I cant tell you how many socialites use this phone and try to come off as being tech savy when their end all, be all, expertese is writing blogs, cruising the internet, and looking at youtube.
I, like you and so many others, are pretty ***** tired of it!- SickofSects, on 07/21/2008, -1/+3jabberwolf, you are in danger of suffering a coronary, with your futile obsession with Apple. You troll in every single Apple thread without fail, but Apple keeps going, making you angrier. Do us all a favor and stop clogging the internet with your "tech savvy" comments and "expertese". I, like many others, am (note: not "are") ***** tired of it.
- Patrikimo, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3Eh, the website that they're pulling that data from is extremely inaccurate. I bought my iPhone from a place that was sold out according to the website, but wasn't in reality. They usually get shipments in every day. In fact, I happened to be close to a store just when they were taking down the "not available" sign, didn't even have to wait in line at all.
- skidooer, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I bought mine from a store that had the "not available" sign up, but still happened to have one in stock.
- mlvassallo, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Texas better not be on the list. I just left an Apple Store in Austin with plenty.
- majortom1981, on 07/21/2008, -4/+3You can also just get an ipod touch. You still get the app store and almost everything else besides the cell phone and gps chip. This way you dont even have to go with att. So instead of a phone you get the equivalent of an apple pda.
- Palaceguard, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Most people bought the iPhone 3G because of the GPS and it does work.
- mbourgon, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3I bought an iPhone (2g) from someone who upgraded, since I wanted a iPod Touch. So no cell service, but it works as an iPod and there's several advantages over the Touch.
1) Camera
2) Bluetooth. Not really useful now, but hopefully the drivers will mature
3) Microphone. Again, not useful until a "real" SIP/VOIP app comes out.
4) Speakers. Having used them, that's fricking useful!
The biggest downside? That durn recessed headphone jack. - AndrewWiggin, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2I'm with mbourgon, the camera alone is enough of a reason to get an iPhone rather than a Touch.
(Obviously if you are a cell phone owner, having the phone part in it is ok too...)
- endernet, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I signed up for the Direct Fullfillment at a local AT&T store on launch day, but called them back on Friday to see if they happened to have any in stock and was told they are not receiving any new shipments and are only doing Direct Fullfillment's. Luckily my phone (16GB/Blk) shipped Saturday and I should get it today.
- LiquidSword, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2I got a letter from Carphone warehouse saying they're getting a new load come in on the 25th July... I also got a £20 credited back to my account for taking so long!
- hiro, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Most O2 stores in UK have stock now, 2 people I know bought one today
- Jenadae, on 07/21/2008, -12/+3HAI GUYZ!! CAN I JOIN THIZ CIRCLE JERK!??!
- highorbit, on 07/21/2008, -17/+12I bought an iPhone 3G last week and I'm unhappy with it. If I was not locked into a 2yr contract now, I would be happy to sell it and go back to my Blackberry. Here's why:
- the keyboard for email is so cramped that it's very hard to use, and consequently very slow. I was able to type fast on my Blackberry. Not so on my iPhone 3G. It makes no sense that I'm able to use a horizontally-oriented keyboard in the browser, but not in email.
- the battery life is awful. With heavy usage, my Blackberry lasted 2 days. The iPhone lasts no more than 6 hours.
- the recharging connector is a proprietary, horribly flimsy, too large connector. The blackberry used an industry standard mini-USB connector to charge or xfer data. You can get a mini-USB cable anywhere if you forget one while you're traveling. If you forget your iPhone charger while going someplace exotic, you're screwed.
- apps can't run in the background. I tried to use a RSS reader that automatically fetches its feeds in the background, and it can't do that - it has to be manually activated by the user. Same for Pandora Radio app - you can't listen to Pandora music and then go read email. This thing can't walk and chew gum at the same time.
- there's no copy and paste feature, anywhere. This is the most stupid omission. I often need to excerpt parts of an email in my response. The iPhone 3G makes that impossible.
- push email is limited to Apple's me.com service, but me.com locks you into a proprietary service with an apple "me.com" domain name. And me.com can't sync to other cloud-based services like Google Apps for Your Domain - it can only sync to Microsoft Outlook, Apple's Address Book & iCal programs, or other computer based packages. I am so past that era - I want my email, calendar and contacts stored in the cloud. If I wanted to use a computer to access my calendar etc, I wouldn't have got a smartphone - I'd have used a computer. My Blackberry used to sync wirelessly in the background with Google Apps calendar, and it had push email with Google Apps and gmail.
- the iPhone wants to sync to just ONE computer. If I have my music on one computer, it can't do a partial sync to another computer. This is probably due to iTunes' preposterous DRM policy. That sort of "lock-you-in" nonsense reminds me of the worst of Microsoft. I now use Amazon and only buy uncrippled MP3 music that I can store and use anywhere I chose.
- the iTunes store can't be accessed with a simple web browser - you have to access it from iTunes. So if you are traveling somewhere and you have a problem with a purchase on your iPhone, your iTunes account is locked until you can access it - from an installed iTunes only - and address the issue.
- the Google maps based mapping application is slow on the iPhone. On my blackberry it used to run and update faster. When I'm driving, I don't have time to wait for this thing to update my location because its processor is still thinking.
- i've managed to crash the iPhone 3G a few times such that it freezes and closes what I am doing, and once froze so totally that I had to do a cold reboot. That's a pretty poor show from Apple. My Blackberry crashed every now and then, but not as frequently as this.
It seems clear this device is more for the "cool" factor than for actual productive usage. It's very much an early version of a product. Microsoft does this all the time - launch a crappy product, freeze the market, and iterate a few times and hopefully eventually get it right. I thought I had left that nonsense in the past.- totorototoro, on 07/21/2008, -2/+20In the time it took you to whine about it here, you could have returned your iPhone and gotten something else.
Don't give me this "2 year lock-in" crap, AT&T gives you 30 days to return it. If you can whine as effectively in real life as you can on DIGG, they won't even charge you restocking.
Go get your Blackberry back.- markiemarke, on 07/21/2008, -1/+5you tell him!
- totorototoro, on 07/21/2008, -3/+8Well *****, markiemarke, most of his whines are ***** he knew (or should have known) before he bought the ***** thing. "No copy and paste"!! NO *****. Do some ***** research before wasting $200+2 year contract on a piece of hardware, for ***** sake!
- rimantas, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2Frankly, I think he has only got his iPhone in his imagination.
- highorbit, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1The posts on this forum are hysterical! This is a cult unlike any I've seen. Yes I do have an iPhone 3G, and thanks for the recommendations on consumer buyers remorse policies, because I'll certainly be using that. It seems I'm not the only one to think this product sucks:

- babybel187, on 07/21/2008, -2/+1you make some good points ... none of them really bother me enough to really complain about them...
i love my iphone ...
however your issue wit hthe usb cable is moot .. anywhere you can get a usb cable u can now her a usb ipod cable... - pyrates, on 07/21/2008, -4/+6Don't know why you are getting dug down. Your review is right on.
- bradleyland, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3He's being dug down because no one gives a ***** about his buyer's remorse, and we're tired of hearing people bitch about the same ***** over, and over, and over, and over...
Don't buy the ***** phone if you don't like it.
We are as painfully aware of the reasons many people don't like the phone as we are the deluge of pointless articles about how well the iPhone is selling/performing/saving children/feeding the masses/etc.
It's like an oral diarrhea flinging battle up in here.
- bradleyland, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3He's being dug down because no one gives a ***** about his buyer's remorse, and we're tired of hearing people bitch about the same ***** over, and over, and over, and over...
- jaredcat, on 07/21/2008, -1/+730 days in california, 15 days everywhere else... There are buyers' remorse protection laws that keep you from being locked in if you don't like it immediately. Even if you bought your phone on iPhone Friday you are still able to return it and get out of your contract for a few more days.
You are not locked in to Apple's MobileMe service for Push e-mail. You can use Exchange as well, and you can get a hosted Exchange account from your office, your carrier, or from about 500 companies offering it (search Google). Also you are not tied to a me.com e-mail address with MobileMe. If you have your own domain name, you can use it.
BB may not use a proprietary connector, but it does use a proprietary driver... You can't charge your BlackBerry on just any ole' USB port. If you don't have the BB driver installed on your computer, it won't charge. And by the way that BB driver is only available for Windows. The only other alternative is to use a BB desktop or travel charger. I think BB and iPhone are evenly matched here.
I have both an iPhone and a BB 8830... While I much rather look at e-mail on my iPhone, I much rather type an e-mail on my BB. I agree with you about that cramped keyboard, but its not unusuable. Disagree with you on the speed. Google Maps on my BB 8830 is MUCH slower than it is on my iPhone. - Anteros, on 07/21/2008, -2/+8You should have done more research before buying, most of these issues were well known before the release day. I don't see the big deal with battery life, just get used to putting into a dock at the end of a day, unless you really are using it more than 6 hours in a day.
- bradleyland, on 07/21/2008, -2/+4Let's be honest, you don't really own an iPhone, you just wanted to be one of those people that bitch (using the same tired arguments) about it, but figured you could add some credibility by claiming you own one.
It's ok that you don't want an iPhone. We don't care. - highorbit, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2I'm the original poster of this "review". It's hilarious to see how cultish people are about this device! Fine, knock yourselves out. It's not for me though. It's way too glitchy and toyish.
I just found out that I can return my iPhone 3G to the Apple store where I bought it, and I can then contact AT&T get out of the 2 year AT&T contract. So that's what I'll be doing tomorrow. No harm to me, and there'll be one more recycled iPhone 3G for the cult to buy. Lesson learned. I'll go back to my BlackBerry that worked, even though it's not as sexy.
- totorototoro, on 07/21/2008, -2/+20In the time it took you to whine about it here, you could have returned your iPhone and gotten something else.
- valleyman86, on 07/21/2008, -3/+2I was going to buy one and decided to get a snowboard instead... I went into ATT and I asked a lady if they had any iPhones (expecting a "no" but letting me fill out a fulfillment form). Well turns out she didn't work there but the lady sitting right next to her (behind the counter) did and did not help me at all. Some customer told me that I would have to fill out a form and so I was waiting for the ATT lady to give it to me or at least tell me where to go. She never spoke a word and finally another customer told me to sign-up on some sheet. It was the most horrible support Ive ever had to deal with so I just left. I hope ATT customer support isn't as bad as that. I will probably have more fun on the mountain anyways...
- jaredcat, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1AT&T's phone support is actually a little better than the other mobile carriers... They typically pick up in 1 ring and can actually transfer you to someone else if they can't help you directly. Of course, a little better than dreadfully awful is still pretty bad. YMMV.
Now the support in the stores is completely terrible-- but that is going to be the case with any carrier. First, the store folks are only supervised by a local store manager and then a regional manager who ocassionally stops by; hard to enforce quality-control that way. Second, the training in the stores is far worse than the training for the contact centers. The people in the stores generally can't help you with most problems. They may even call in to the contact center to ask questions while you are in the store. Third, the people in the store are making spiffs on sales, not on support. They don't have much motivation to help you there.- valleyman86, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0True enough except I was trying to make a buy and wasn't interested in any actual support beyond that.

- bdleath, on 07/21/2008, -2/+6I propose we please stop using "all but" to mean "effectively", it technically says the opposite of its intent. I really wish this article just said the "iPhone has effectively sold out in 38 states." I would read that article, instead I am driven to comment on the title.
- stealthboy, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2I cam here to say exactly that. The title is very poor.
- thekak, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Jeesus thank you, I was confused by their stupid title.

- markiemarke, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2I walked into my local o2 store today and walked back out again 10 minutes later with my upgraded iPhone.
They had piles and piles of the things and people were buying them like hot cakes.
Not much queing though, registering it only took a few minutes.- LiquidSword, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2where was this??
I wish i hadn't registered mine now with Car Phonewarehouse on last Friday... They seemt to be taking ages to get new stock!- markiemarke, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Solihull, a little south of Birmingham. A lot of o2 stores in the area had stock when i checked the website yesterday morning.
And yes, I hate carphonewarehouse wish a passion.
Because I bought my first gen iphone from apple and not a carphonewarehouse store directly they refused to let me take advantage of the contract renewal policy or give me my old number. Absolute sodding cowboys

- totorototoro, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2sucks that you can't get Pandora over there-one of the best iPhone apps.
- hiro, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2You're right, used to listen to it loads on my desktop : (

- mrhaines, on 07/21/2008, -2/+2Does this mean people will finally stop talking about it?
- Vesuvias, on 07/21/2008, -2/+0Even I as a fan (not fanboy) of Apple products, I say I HOPE this takes the iPhone off the radar a bit... of course all the geeks out there with their new toy are still in the honeymoon phase so this could last 3 months if I'm not correct...

- anubis2night, on 07/21/2008, -2/+4Who cares if it's sold out? I for one would rather hear about it working correctly without all the defects.
- Mahoney07, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I would get one but I'm not willing to pay $70 per month for a phone since I won't use 3g much because I have wifi whereever I go (home and school)
- dengzhi, on 07/21/2008, -6/+1iphone sux, its camera is still 2MP. My nokia has a 3.2MP camera with flash, it takes pretty clear pictures.
- wildsnake, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2My iPhone takes clear pictures too. MP has nothing to do with quality unless you are printing larger prints. The lens is what makes a better picture, not the megapixels
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm - theutopian, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4Why are you buying a phone for it's camera? If you want a good camera, I don't know, buy a freaking camera.
- Gee1004, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1You can't take hidden upskirt pictures with a Nikon d80

- Demistate, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2I bought on Friday 7/11 with Direct Fulfillment. They are shipping it today.
I can't imagine what it will be like for all those who bought it over the weekend. I actually went into work late so I could get damn thing before next month. - Zippo, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1If you're in Canada, order it over the phone through Rogers. You can get better rates (much better than their all-in-one iPhone plans) and you get to the activate the phone yourself. Saves the hassle of harassing your local Rogers store... they'll ship the phone directly to you.
- Commodus, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I picked my custom plans for the iPhone in-store; the only advantage of ordering online is not having to hoof it to the store and wait in line.
- cmaxster, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0Yeah, after being fed up with literally every single Rogers authorized store being sold out every day since launch, I decided to just call Rogers. The first time they were actually sold out over the phone and couldn't put me on any sort of waiting list, but I tried again a few days later and bingo! No waiting list and the phone ships directly to your home! Can't wait to get mine in the mail :D
- sw1ft, on 07/21/2008, -5/+6* YAWN * Did you guys see Dark Knight?
- wildsnake, on 07/21/2008, -2/+1Did you see the filter page on digg?
- m.sandstorm, on 07/21/2008, -1/+3I might go see it on Imax tomorrow night. This movie is going to be HAWT!
- srodolff, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1I wonder if Apple took into account, when using the touch screen on the original iPhone, how it would work when your hands are shaking badly because of iPhone 2.0 withdrawals.
Using the keyboard must be a real pain in the rear. - delhokie, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1If you're looking call the store- don't depend on the online widget. As has already been mentioned, the store gets shipments during the day and they do not update the website during that time.

So they are everything except sold out? I'm confused.- Commodus, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1It means Apple is running very low on stock, but isn't actually sold out just yet.
