iPhone Safari Does Have Flash and Java Support
forums.macrumors.com — Contrary to earlier reports the iPhone does support Flash and Java according to a German publication. This could open the door for a multitude of iPhone web-based services.

- cannibaljp, on 10/12/2007, -28/+6but no iTunes songs as ringtones... not sure if that is a blessing or a curse.
i will admit that custom ringtones are generally the most irritating things EVER...- sparkmonkeyz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14But you can use iTunes music as ringtones. I was at Macworld on Wednesday, and the guy talking said that you could.
- woojoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8NO MORE RUNESCAPE FOR YOU :D
- enzomedici, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2
No, you cannot use iTunes songs as ringtones. I was at the keynote and that was not mentioned. In an interview w/ Time magazine, Jobs specifically said you would not be able to do that or Apple would have had to pay big bucks to the record companies. - buzzert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I have a feeling installing 3rd party applications on the iPhone will be much like installing homebrew on the PSP. You'll have to find a hack to run stuff. (Like a hacked widget?)
- ajchavar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i'm confused, is the distinction that you cant use music downloaded from the iTMS? it seems to me it'd be unfair if you couldn't use music in your itunes library at all as a ringtone.
- Heembo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Ringtones are a multi-multi-billion dollar industry. There is no way the studios will winningly or cheaply allow the iPhone to circumvent that gravy train.
- 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the Music industry gets about the same amount of money on a ringtone as it does for an iTunes song
iTunes splits the profit between Music Label and Apple
the reason ringtones are so expensive is because
profits are split three ways
Music Label gets a portion
Carrier gets a portion
Aggregator gets a portion (for formatting, hosting the files, and usually have the license agreements with the Music labels)
Ringtones are a huge rip off for the consumer - Alex.w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Who the hell uses these ring tone services? Are people to stupid to get a phone with Bluetooth, or USB, or even frickin' Infared ffs. All you do with a half decent post-2002 phone is put the MP3 on your memory and select it as a ring tone.
People need to stop letting the carriers force crippled-ass locked-down handsets down their throats before they get any more control. - drjones78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can use any music file on the iPhone as a ringtone AFAIK. They dont allow over the air downloads, probably as a way to placate Cingular, seeing as how they just launched their mobile music service with Napster.
- RemyLogan, on 10/12/2007, -20/+1I hope the java and flash information is true. I can't imagine Apple trying to sell a Web 1.0 device in a 2.0 world.
- sparkmonkeyz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Oh yeah, because I forgot that you need Java and Flash to be Web 2.0
Do you even know what Web 2.0 is? If not, which it seems like you don't, here is a good article
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2.0 - stanleyfeinbaum, on 10/12/2007, -13/+7Java and flash have been widely used since... 1997? They were common in the web 0.5 world!
Stanley Feinbaum,
professional journalist - jtrost, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2I think what he meant is that JSP and flash applications are becoming more common with Web 2.0 than they were in the past.
- TomFrost, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2JSP is server-side -- you don't need java on the phone's Safari to load up JSP sites! That's only for Java applets, which are antiquated by flash now anyway.
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@sparkmonkeyz: "Oh yeah, because I forgot that you need Java and Flash to be Web 2.0"
Are you sure you're not confusing "javascript" by saying "java". This happens a LOT usually with non-technical people, and it irritates the crap out of me, especially when someone is describing a problem or setting my expectations for something. There's a world of difference between supporting "java" and supporting "javascript". - 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Flash has no place in the mobile world
the load times are too slow and the data rates too high
AJAX FTW - BillyBreen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Word, 4NDr01D. Ajax FTW indeed: http://www.ajaxperformance.com/?p=49
- NoTreason4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
Despite the opinion of people at Wikipedia, Web 2.0 does not have a clear definition. Web 2.0 is in the eye of the beholder.
It is comonly associated with more interactive websites, and the primary way this is achieved currently is Javascript and Flash. (EG: Gmail and YouTube)
However, Java applets would be an appropriate mode of doing web 2.0 apps on a dedicated platform like a phone-- which is why java is a common language on smart phones.
The original poster was dug down inappropriately by people who have a mistaken opinion that web 2.0 is only what *they* think it is.
- sparkmonkeyz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Oh yeah, because I forgot that you need Java and Flash to be Web 2.0
- zdlatham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The killer app will be whether it will run the fantasy baseball/football flash programs that yahoo/espn/etc run. That would make it a no brainer for me.
- cying, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Even if there's no Flash, there will be Quicktime. I doubt that there'll be Java.
http://www.digg.com/apple/iPhone_runs_Quicktime- enzomedici, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Flash is ok, but Java sucks ass. Who wants that slow ass crap running on their phone?
- cying, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I certainly am not advocating Java, but Quicktime can be made pretty efficient and has a simple interaction model.
- ajchavar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1of course there will be some version of quicktime, its an apple product and it plays widescreen movies. i'd like to know what other video it will support, or if you can expand it. it would suck if you couldnt watch any movies in the .wmv format or the .avi
. . .cause my favorite pr0n is normally .wmv - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wonder if it's going to have Quartz Composer - THAT would be awesome :)
- LilBoyLuver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So this makes youtube videos a maybe even if it will be really slow
- Retuow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Cool! Tower TD on ur phone!
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Good, maybe this will push Blackberry to get off their asses, and get flash on the Blackberry devices.
- tabledesk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Oh *****, and I thought playing Curveball [ http://www.addictinggames.com/curveball.html ] with the wiimote was fun. But with my index finger?!
- M4v3R, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm playing it with my index finger now. On a laptop touchpad. And it isn't that cool.
- Easty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Pandora on iPhone. Awesome.
- dftz, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2
- kelly, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Crap!! Yet another anti iPhone FUD point shot down the drain.
What is an Apple detractor to do!!!! - sparkalex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Safari in the keynote did not have the Flash plug-in. You can see this from the New York Times website he visited in the demo.
Fingers crossed that this will change. - tboutcher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Fandango requires Flash and it loaded just fine during the keynote
- tboutcher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does digg need flash and/or java ?
- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Some of the ads might use Flash. But no, it doesn't use Java at all. Barely anybody uses Java, it's too much of an ass-pain.
- ckohler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11This is inaccurate.
David Pogue corrects this by quoting a recording made of Steve Jobs by John Markoff which says:
- Markoff: “What about all those plugins that live within Safari now, like Flash or like Java or like JavaScript?”
- Jobs: “Well, JavaScript’s built into the Phone. Sure.”
- Markoff: “And what are you thinking about Flash and Java?”
- Jobs: “Java’s not worth building in. Nobody uses Java anymore. It’s this big heavyweight ball and chain.”
- Markoff: “Flash?”
- Jobs: “Well, you might see that.”
- Markoff: “What about YouTube–”
- Jobs: “Yeah, YouTube—of course. But you don’t need to have Flash for YouTube.”
http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/01/13/ultimate-iphone-faqs-list-part-2
So Flash is still a posibility but not Java. Also, it seems Apple/Google may have bigger plans for YouTube on the iPhone. Perhaps a special app dedicated specifically to it.- Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Meh, the more I hear about the iPhone the less I want it. Anyone should be able to make an app that runs on an iPhone. I think I'll wait for it to be hacked before I buy one. :(
- iheartbeer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2As far as I can tell, YouTube uses Flash -- that's how they stream their videos. Unless Apple updates Quicktime to play .flv files the iPhone will need Flash to view YouTube and other sites like it. Or, as you mentioned, they could develop a special app just for YouTube (like they did with Google maps).
- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7In what corner of the world do you not need Flash to use YouTube?
- appleswitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"In what corner of the world do you not need Flash to use YouTube?"
In the corner where Apple and Google are so tight they joke about mergers and Google owns YouTube... - NoTreason4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
People think that because YouTube uses flash (currently) that this is the only way it could work. But I doubt there is much that complicated in the flash video codec, and apple could license it, allowing a widget to be made to interface with Youtube using Quicktime.
YouTube does NOT need flash. The site uses flash, but google video, and all the quicktime sites don't need flash. Flash is not really used on the youtube site other than as a cheesy wrapper around streaming video--- and Apple has had a more standards based way of doing that for over a decade in quicktime.
Google may be migrating away from flash, or Apple may end up providing a player that doesn't use flash but allows access to youtube content.
So, Jobs is perfectly correct, even though the current youtube site does use flash. - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> In what corner of the world do you not need Flash to use YouTube?
Kinoma 4 EX on a Palm. Plays Youtube/GoogleVideo without flash.
- MagicalTrevor2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Aside from suspected issues with the keynote phone noted above, I don't see why they wouldn't be-how should it be much different from Safari on full OS X? Slightly less customizeable filesave capabilities/locations and connection methods was all that came to my mind...
- ahknight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Two Apple dudes I spoke to at MacWorld said it didn't. It doesn't.
Just wait until you have one in your greasy little hands before speculating otherwise. - stelt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I hope the Iphone runs the néxt Safari, so it runs SVG, as WebKit already does.
It would then be added to the long list at http://svg.org/special/svg_phones
More on SVG at http://svg.startpagina.nl- appleswitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If it doesen't there will probably be a browser update Webkit goes stable in Leopard.
- apersaud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1YAY! That means YOUTUBE and GOOGLE VIDEO on the iPhone! (when I browse the website and have nothing else to do).
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They officially said the iPhone would support YouTube, outright. They only said that it might not include wholesale support of "Flash", just the "video"... which didn't make complete sense to me, but there it is.
- ferose333, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0i read that .flv movies can be played without flash, with some codecs
- rocketpocket, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1unit101 nice profile pic.
- ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Good. Now let`s get Java on the Wii.
- sampowers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Who ported Flash to ARM?
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ported? More like slightly tweaked, and recompiled, as it's OS X....
- basictheory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If anything the iPhone should have support for Flash Lite 2, it's built for mobile and works quite well.
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashlite/ - zephc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I seem to recall swf movies working in older version of QT (in 6.x i think), or maybe older versions of flash *still* play in QT, so it's not like its impossible to do all the flash stuff thru the QT movie player.
- DRTED, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0i cant wait till the iphone comes out so i can use it as a door wedge
- appleswitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple is friends with Adobe, who bought Macromedia who owns Flash, and Google who bought YouTube and owns Google Video... I really don't see much of a reason why they need flash, just access to these two sites, which would be very easy.
- ChrisSoutham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Still don't think it will be Flash 8 though - as the Wii has only v7 because it's an embedded device.
Will be interesting to see which version makes it. YouTube of course only uses 7 at the mo, hence the ***** quality compared to v8! - ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Is there a "duh" category?
"Full browser, full HTML - not a trimmed down version"
Great news!!!!

"iPhone allows you to CC an email OMG!"- NoTreason4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm always amazed that people will ***** all over a product they know nothing about, simply because there's a product out on the market that has a similar feature... your assumption that there is nothing new here is only exposing your ignorance to the world.
I remember all the people like you who talked abou tthe ipod when it first came out, and pointed out that MP3 players was already a well established market, and then went on to claim that the ipod was too expensive and did nothing new, and thus woudl be a big failure "like the mac". 100M ipods later, and a big boost in Mac sales, I've never seen one of these d udes say "boy was I wrong about the ipod!" No, they're just trotting out the same old BS about the iPhone.
