iPhone and iPod touch 1.1.2 jailbroken BEFORE the official release
tuaw.com — Apple hasn't yet put the 1.1.2 update into iTunes but the iPhone and iPod touch are already jailbroken! With pictures.

Way to go and support your 'Think Different' creative customer base - Apple!
Treating your customers like criminal idiots and insulting them to their face, I guess it's a new marketing idea...

- DogGunn, on 11/10/2007, -6/+20Wow, that was amazing. Nice work to the hackers - that will show Apple!
- eschompthis, on 11/09/2007, -0/+15yeah this will show apple to fix this before its even released
- WiseWeasel, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Fortunately for us, they're not releasing details on the exploit at the moment. I would bet they are not going to release them until the update goes public, for just that reason.
- chitoiup, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2Show them what?

- tokinama, on 11/09/2007, -1/+25that was quick wasn't it.. I wonder why Apple wants to lock up iPod Touch. let the hackers play around with it and find security holes. and let Apple fix it.. thats easy right!
- weiran, on 11/09/2007, -7/+2Because people will start installing unsupported apps and run to Apple when their phone/iPod dies.
- Hamletlere, on 11/09/2007, -0/+9Kind of like they do on a Mac computer, huh?
I develop embedded software for a living. The solution (which as far as I know, Apple has done) is to have a protected bootstrap that can't be screwed up, that would allow the running firmware to be overwritten with the original firmware at device bootup, allowing the user to always get back to a known (factory-fresh) state. How hard would it be for the Apple Geniuses, if the customer does come crying, to take a iPod Touch in the back and reload it with original firmware?
If software can actually damage the hardware, then it is a crappy OS and hardware. I don't believe this is the case.

- DogGunn, on 11/09/2007, -0/+26Wow, what's even better is the secpack for 1.1.2 has been retrieved, and the root update file has been decrypted.
This means that the unlock is very close to being released! VERY CLOSE - MikeyisaFag, on 11/10/2007, -1/+24Like they always say, "you can't hold a good iPhone down."
... or something like that. - ytsohptwhere, on 11/10/2007, -5/+11When are they just going to give up?
- starkruzr, on 11/10/2007, -1/+7Why would they just give up?
- Ninjab3ar, on 11/10/2007, -2/+7hes talking about apple, not the hackers (i hope)
- AggieTales, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Seeing as how quick it took for them to jailbreak a new firmware, I'm guess Apple has kinda already "given up" just not officially though (they have to make it look like they're still trying at least to please AT&T)
- KDAY12, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2February.
- zongamin, on 11/10/2007, -1/+3The problem is these exploits could be used to execute malicious code - so Apple has to fix them as much as it needs to secure OS X. Think about it!
- 80hd, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2apple is probably more concerned about this..
"Just buy a Touch and load it with all the same programs instead of getting the more expensive iPhone that needs a monthly plan to do anything."
- starkruzr, on 11/10/2007, -1/+7Why would they just give up?
- ZPWeeks, on 11/09/2007, -13/+4Dugg down as inaccurate for the title, this crack is iPod Touch only for the moment.
- brettschulte, on 11/09/2007, -3/+4Actually it's the same.
- flibblesan, on 11/09/2007, -2/+2No. They have only jailbroken the iPod touch. The iPhone with 1.1.2 has not been jailbroken and unlocked yet.
- KennMac, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Yes. The principle is exactly the same on the iPhone. This was confirmed even on 1.1.1, but the TIFF exploit was faster and less involved, so the TIFF prevailed. The current exploit was never patched in 1.1.2, which is why it was "discovered" so "quickly"
- flibblesan, on 11/09/2007, -2/+2No. They have only jailbroken the iPod touch. The iPhone with 1.1.2 has not been jailbroken and unlocked yet.
- brettschulte, on 11/09/2007, -3/+4Actually it's the same.
- threepio, on 11/10/2007, -5/+38Has anyone thought that maybe Apple's making this easy to break? Like, they have to contractually "patch" holes... but they're not making much of an effort to?
- macslut, on 11/09/2007, -5/+5I don't think that's likely. 1.1.1 seemed to go out of the way to make certain hacking more difficult while leaving a security hole in place that could've compromised non-hacking/unlocking iPhone owners. Plus the theory only makes sense if Apple makes more money selling the iPhone hardware than it does on media and service kickbacks. It turns out that Apple makes somewhere between $10 and $20 a month from AT&T for iPhone subscribers.
- michelspc, on 11/09/2007, -1/+5There's a difference between a jailbroken iPhone and an unlocked iPhone. Apple may not care about the jailbreaks but you can bet they will do everything possible to keep you locked into the AT&T network.
- daza, on 11/10/2007, -0/+7Oh gawsh. Apple's secretly on our side, I should have realised by now!
- KennMac, on 11/09/2007, -3/+3As someone who works with the dev team on this, it's very clear that Apple makes attempts to thwart jailbreaking. They're just not very good at it.
- AggieTales, on 11/09/2007, -1/+2or maybe thats just what they want you to think, they could lock it down completely but are deciding not to.
- Speed, on 11/10/2007, -2/+5Amazing, even when Apple is on the "opposing side", Digg is defending them...
- MeThePeople, on 11/09/2007, -1/+2when you open the code the first line says please dont make this 0 a 1
- aerogant, on 11/10/2007, -3/+1Just wondering... does jailbreaks have any effect on Apple stock?
- KAMiKAZOW, on 11/10/2007, -1/+1If you had followed the news during iPhone and Leopard development, you'd know that developing both at the same time stressed Apple's resources too much. Currently all iPhone apps run as root which is clearly a sign of a bit rushed development (probably to fulfill a contract with AT&T). Leopard was even delayed because of this.
Now that both Leopard and iPhone/iPod touch are out of the door, Apple is likely to give Xcode 3.1 (=iPhone SDK) and Mobile OS X 2.0 (=allow 3rd party apps; run them with user privileges) the highest development priorities. Mobile OS X 1.x probably has just a small dev team and this small team focuses to a lesser extend on security issues. - 80hd, on 11/10/2007, -1/+1I think that the guys releasing these exploits are holding out on their work for the most annoying effect on Apple,
My bet is that they have a whole map of holes and will disclose a new exploit with every release so that Apple is never effectively in control.
What good does it do to have 4 jailbreak techniques? Release them one at a time so that they can't all be fixed in one sweep and it's going to be a major disincentive for Apple engineers to fight back.
- macslut, on 11/09/2007, -5/+5I don't think that's likely. 1.1.1 seemed to go out of the way to make certain hacking more difficult while leaving a security hole in place that could've compromised non-hacking/unlocking iPhone owners. - guinpen, on 11/09/2007, -3/+2hey hey hey. let's not get too hasty now. hopefully they won't go "*****." and update the official release before it gets out to break it again
- KennMac, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1You'd be surprised. An even bigger forehead slapper is when the carrier unlocked folks upgrade as soon as they see one available, and have an expensive paperweight. These are usually less technical people who bought pre-unlocked phones on eBay, and think everything 'just works' in their peachy world.
- 80hd, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1From what I've gathered, no proof of concept code has been released (which means Apple has no idea where to start working) and these guys are waiting for the best possible moment to kick Apple when their down
- Batnun, on 11/09/2007, -6/+0Can't really see proof that this is a jailbroken ipod...
- eclipxe, on 11/09/2007, -0/+6It is a screenshot from the iPod - not a photo. Screenshots can only be taken with a 3rd party app, hence it is jailbroken.
- jivemasta, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2The only way to get a screenshot is by running a third party app.
- 80hd, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1Also, ins''t this from the same group that broke the first firmware? I'm sure they're above having a Michael Scott moment and promising a "special surprise" without delivering.
- striker1211, on 11/11/2007, -1/+60This seems an awful lot like the PSP firmware wars
- sakuraz, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1all I need is a good GBA emulator.
- Llance, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Yeah, Apple is acting way too much like Sony these days. Putting out great stuff, then killing all interest in it by crippling it. Probably to "release" functionality over time as "updates". Without the Jailbreak, my i'Touch would be nothing more than a toy. As it is, the damned thing rocks now! Thank gowsh for smart people who make their efforts publicly available.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Leopard was initially meant to be released before the iPhone. I'm certain that Apple planed to ship Xcode 3.1 (iPhone development platform) along with the iPhone launch which was originally planed to happen ca. 6 months after the Leopard release. But as development complication arose (see the news about delaying the Leopard launch to get the iPhone out of the door), that plan was disturbed. Now we've got iPhones that run all apps as root.
Apple announced to fix this problem in Q1 2008 -- with the official SDK release.

- KennMac, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1It was released specifcally to close the 1.1.1 hole used to jailbreak.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1And I thought to provide the missing calendar functionality...

- dpogni, on 11/10/2007, -4/+1SO!
- skim1420, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1I applied the update to my hacked iPod touch. The only real reason I hacked it for the add/edit calendar event functionality, which 1.1.2 now has. I hope it doesn't crash as much anymore. My hacked iPod crashed several times a day.
- starkruzr, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1That was because of the TIFF fix. That's not going to happen anymore with 1.1.2 because the TIFF fix is applied by Apple instead of hacked on.
- Hamletlere, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2Really? That's odd. I have the "hacked" TIFF fix on my iPhone, and it hasn't crashed once. Are you sure of this information? Got any sources?
- starkruzr, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1I jailbroke the first time with the symlink method and applications didn't constantly crash. I didn't apply the TIFF fix via packages.
I jailbroke the second time with AppSnapp and applications started crashing all the time.
The only difference was the jailbreak method. What do YOU think happened?
- starkruzr, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1I jailbroke the first time with the symlink method and applications didn't constantly crash. I didn't apply the TIFF fix via packages.
- KennMac, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2Way to talk out of your ass. The tiff exploit hole has absolutely nothing to do with the stability of the phone.
Closing a window in your house doesn't make the house more structurly sound.- starkruzr, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1The hacked fix appears to introduce instabilities -- at least, it does on my phone.
- godofpumpkins, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1that's utter BS :P the TIFF patch was as good as the official one. The reason it was crashing repeatedly was probably because you had summerboard, which was (should be fixed now) known to crash everything all the time.
- starkruzr, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Should be fixed now, but apparently isn't. The only thing that's changed between my old 1.1.1 install and my new 1.1.1 install was the jailbreak method. New install crashes apps all the time. No other differences.
- Hamletlere, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2Really? That's odd. I have the "hacked" TIFF fix on my iPhone, and it hasn't crashed once. Are you sure of this information? Got any sources?
- IEatHamburgers, on 11/09/2007, -0/+11.1.2 added the calendar edits back? Guess they finally got the message... :P
- jondus, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Skim make sure you aren't using "dim wallpaper" in summerboard. That's what crashed mine. I took that off and haven't had a crash in days.
- starkruzr, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1That was because of the TIFF fix. That's not going to happen anymore with 1.1.2 because the TIFF fix is applied by Apple instead of hacked on.

- LordC, on 11/10/2007, -1/+4I only wish Sony and Apple would stop fighting a losing battle. Hackers will always find a way.
Surely it's better to be an opportunist, and turn it to an advantage?
Open up the iPhone, open up the PSP. To some extent at least. Developers of homebrew applications could work with the big companies, doesn't have to be against them.- rudy23, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1why is it so difficult to undertsnad. these companies are protecting their financial interests.
Sony doesnt want people to run homebrew and cracked games on PSP.
apple doesnt want unlocking and voip on iPhone.
yes they cant stop the hackers but the more they make their lives difficult the more it frustrates the average joe from trying these things. - KAMiKAZOW, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Did you live under a rock in October?

- KennMac, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3They run basically the same firmware. The same hole is on 1.1.1 iPhone/iPod and has been carried over to 1.1.2. That's why it was announced so "fast"
- rkho, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1The TIFF exploit was shut down. This morning however, Erica Sadun of TUAW was able to jailbreak the iPhone using an Installer.app download and other stuff, you can find that out at TUAW.

- MrPineapples, on 11/09/2007, -1/+2I'm buying a Uk iPhone, which I believe will ship with 1.1.2, my intention is to unlock it & use it on my Vodafone contract. Can I do this yet? or do I have to wait until this version is hacked? Can I restore it to an older version of the firmware?
- anonymouse91, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2Same for me. I haven't really kept up to date with all the iPhone/iPod Touch jailbreaking but after hearing this, I'm getting really tempted to get an iPhone today. Well, as long as 1.1.2 can be unlocked.
- Hamletlere, on 11/09/2007, -2/+2I'm curious. Why do you specifically want 1.1.2? I see nothing in it that interests me over 1.1.1, as I'm living in the US and the changes seem to revolve around internationalization. Is that what you need, or did I miss something?
- MrPineapples, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1You have no choice if you buy one in the Uk that's what is pre-installed. Do know if it's easy/possible to downgrade the firmware?
- KennMac, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2No one said anything about 'wanting' 1.1.2. They're talking about dealing with getting stuck with it.
- MrPineapples, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2I'm confident it'll be cracked. so much so I just ordered one.
- DanAtkinson, on 11/09/2007, -4/+1Why don't you just get a better phone, like the LG Viewty?
- felipecn, on 11/09/2007, -2/+1LG Viewty ISN'T better than the iPhone. But a Nokia N95 [Or a HTC TyTN 2] is :)

- mrbulldog, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Well done lads!
- DarkDx, on 11/09/2007, -1/+2YEAH! I was worried about buying a new iphone and not bein able to unlock it.
Edit: *****, buried as innacurate title. - danjal, on 11/11/2007, -0/+4sorry, but this just shows that apple products are as easy to hack as any other device.. given if people can be bothered enough to try
- ewok85a, on 11/09/2007, -2/+2Great, my ipod touch arrives tomorrow :)
- n8to, on 11/09/2007, -2/+3I think whoever is creating the jailbreaks must be getting some inside help. After all, the geeks inside Apple are just like us geeks outside Apple - they want to run 3rd party Apps, and they hate AT&T just like we do. How easy would it be to slip some info to the hackers to make sure the new update gets cracked? I'm sure Apple wouldn't be pleased, but at the same time, they benefit more when their lock is cracked as it just continues to support sales of their phone. Obviously they can't be pleased with the exclusive deal with AT&T. That was just done to create a stable environment for all the features (i.e. good data plan and visual voice mail). I'm sure Steve isn't thinking "ohs noes! the phone is cracked again! Those good people at AT&T are going to lose money!"
Nah, this is happening way to quickly- mysql101, on 11/09/2007, -0/+5apple is just fixing security holes. unlike windows or osx where you can install whatever you want, apple locked down the iphone/itouch and so the security holes allow us to break into the system and install whatever we want. it's good that apple is fixing the holes, otherwise we'd end up with a bunch of ipods that get rooted when we visited websites.
i doubt there is an insider intentionally creating bugs that the hackers are then exploiting - it would be too easy for them to see who's patching crap code. to go even further, the hackers EXPLAIN the exploit to the public, making it less likely.- betterth, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Only the 1.1.1 jailbreak was a webaccessible issue. The rest of the breaks so far weren't safari issues.
- godofpumpkins, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1yes, God Himself (Mr. Jobs) helped us jailbreak it. He held our hand and gave us several of his best employees for the job. But no, I'm just kidding. I wish we had inside help, but for now it's just easy because we're resourceful.
- mysql101, on 11/09/2007, -0/+5apple is just fixing security holes. unlike windows or osx where you can install whatever you want, apple locked down the iphone/itouch and so the security holes allow us to break into the system and install whatever we want. it's good that apple is fixing the holes, otherwise we'd end up with a bunch of ipods that get rooted when we visited websites.
- Brennn, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Seems suspicious. Good job, though.
- feebes, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2That would seem impressive if Apple was releasing these new firmware updates to stop the hacking. However they have openly stated they do not endorse nor condemn the hacking. So these updates will continue to come easy-to-hack because Apple isn't trying to stop it.
- godofpumpkins, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1actually, they went to pretty extreme measures to prevent it in the 1.0.2 -> 1.1.1 update. It did more than fix bugs and add new functionality. They completely changed their restore mechanism specifically so we could not jailbreak 1.1.x like we did 1.0.x.
- digitallysick, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1I have yet to see what the update has to offer, anyone have a changelog?
- DLicious, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2If I update from 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 on an already jailbroken Ipod will it keep all the 3rd party apps or will I have to re-jailbreak it?
- unionaire, on 11/09/2007, -7/+1you'll brick your ipod and would not be allowed to recover until hackers figure out a way to
- sholt, on 11/09/2007, -0/+5likely it will fail a checksum comparison and be forced to restore - removing the jailbreak.
- godofpumpkins, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1it simply won't be jailbroken anymore. The update just wipes the root partition and replaces it with the image from apple, removing any custom programs or jailbreak techniques from it. Nothing to worry about if you don't mind losing all the custom (and stolen iPhone) apps.
- Haecceity, on 11/09/2007, -1/+1The iPod Touch is essentially a handheld computer. If any company tried to launch a *desktop* computer on which you could only install software made by that same company they'd have an antitrust violation suit staring them in the face. Why's it different for a handheld?
I love my jailbroken Touch way more than the "fixed" version that I bought from Apple because computers can always be more useful than they were with the apps that came pre-installed. Free the iPod Touch and iPhone! - MGopinath, on 11/09/2007, -2/+2OMG....Apple you cant fight with these born genius guys. Give up your locking and other restrictions. Open up....
- unionaire, on 11/09/2007, -3/+1Because everyone relies on "Desktop" or PCs to work and not everyone relies on iPhone to call someone else
- xStainDx, on 11/09/2007, -2/+3Buried as inaccurate, this has nothing to do with iPhone - only iPod Touch.
- MrViklund, on 11/09/2007, -7/+2I hope Apple updates the iPhone and the iPod Touch to 1.1.3 very soon to put this hacking to rest.
- phatguy471, on 11/11/2007, -2/+4It's not going to put it to rest. It never will. There are a large amount of people who want third party apps to extend the functionality of the product that they paid for (my self included). As long as there is a large community for this the hacking will never rest. Look at all the game consoles they are all hacked to extend their functionality its the same for the iphone and ipod touch and any other gadget. It will always be a cat and mouse game, if you don't like it, ide suggest reading another site or moving your reading interests to something else.
- Llance, on 11/11/2007, -1/+2Troll. Gotta be. Only someone too dumb to type would think like this.
- starkruzr, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1Please explain why this would be necessary.

- Tanbo, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2So far, all the update seems to offer is an international keyboard.

- zongamin, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Ah *****! I can't believe you've done this!
- TheMacThinker, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1You do not loose files by updating unless you update by restoring through iTunes. However you do not know what changes have been made to the iPhone's OS so you best bet to avoid issues with your phone is to restore it so third party apps and hacks can be wiped out.

- sm0k3yy, on 11/09/2007, -1/+0So, What's new?
- Digg413, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3I'm updating my iPhone right now through iTunes - phone was acting weird, and 1.1.2 is being downloaded as the update.
- maxshanly, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1I think Apple want the phone to be hacked, they're just opening up other wholes for hackers so that AT&T don't bitch to much. After all, Steve Jobs and the Woz both started out as AT&T Hackers themselves, correct?

- solid12345, on 11/09/2007, -0/+0Can we stop being cutesy with the terms "jail broken" and just keep using "hacked" as we always have?
- starkruzr, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2"Jailbroken" is more accurate.
