The Colorful Art of Sand Mandalas [PICS]
colourlovers.com — The Sand Mandala is a Tibetan Buddhist tradition which symbolizes the transitory nature of things. As part of Buddhist canon, all things material are seen as transitory. A sand mandala is an example of this, being that once it has been built and its accompanying ceremonies and viewing are finished, it is systematically destroyed.

- warrensil, on 09/30/2008, -1/+14Looks like an acid trip to me!
- dafragsta, on 10/01/2008, -0/+10So much of Buddhism is drawn out of the parallels between meditation and psychedelic experience, especially DMT, which is made by your pineal gland. In fact, you could say that they see life as one big psychedelic experience unto itself.
- ahoy, on 10/01/2008, -5/+3yeah, probably not.
- FadieZ, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3More like the peak of a DMT trip imo.
- marshallpeck, on 10/01/2008, -2/+2I'm on acid!

- CCunitz, on 09/30/2008, -2/+28Mr. Sandman, bring me a monk (bung, bung, bung, bung)
Make him a mandala-making hunk (bung, bung, bung, bung)
Give him colored sand with which to make (bung, bung, bung, bung)
The coolest designs, with a tiny rake.
Sandman, I'm so alone
Don't have no Buddhist to call my own
Into mandala-less depression, I have sunk
Mr. Sandman, bring me a monk!- geneticlemon, on 10/01/2008, -1/+3Came up with that one all by yourself, eh?

- JoshuaGross, on 10/01/2008, -1/+4Sikhs? The predominantly Indian religious group? Fail.
- EpicSelekta, on 10/01/2008, -1/+21) they're called sikhs (pronounced "seeks")
2) why bother defining people by their religion when we can call everyone "*****"?
- chmcarro, on 10/01/2008, -2/+5Keep digging it, maybe that will make the site work!
- FallenTurtles, on 10/01/2008, -7/+2This was cool... but I found a link to pictures of Kristen Bell on the side at Maxim. I enjoyed that more.
- FallenTurtles, on 10/01/2008, -1/+3Well, this comment was definitely supposed to be in a different thread. Sometimes I fail at internet.
- blinker265, on 10/01/2008, -1/+2they are probably using those things that you did as a kid...like paint by numbers except with sand and glue...
- Cheezeburgar, on 10/01/2008, -3/+5If they used cocaine as the powder then erasing would be easy.
- Luciapalooza, on 10/01/2008, -1/+11So beautiful!!! It's amazing how patient they are to make such beautiful art.
- EpicSelekta, on 10/01/2008, -4/+4I initially read this as "sand Mandelas" and got really, really excited.
I mean, Nelson Mandela is cool enough to honor with a sand sculpture, right? - OffPiste, on 10/01/2008, -6/+4Even the monks are drinking bottled water. Is there anyone not ***** on this planet? It's just sickening how we are trashing our Mother.
- NSResponder, on 10/01/2008, -4/+2Have you considered maybe, you know, getting a life one of these years?
-jcr- apophenic, on 10/01/2008, -0/+4Bottled water is seriously horrible for the planet. There's no excuse for its existence outside of rescue efforts to disaster areas.
- NSResponder, on 10/01/2008, -4/+2Have you considered maybe, you know, getting a life one of these years?
- shithitinthefan, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2Blonde?, you've got red hair now!
- dafragsta, on 10/01/2008, -0/+4I encourage every one of you to play the accompanying video. You will achieve a much higher appreciation for what these guys are doing because NO ONE but the most focused monk would be able to do such an intricate job with all of that ***** noise.
- apophenic, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2The music probably helps focus them.
- dafragsta, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2Yeah, but in the beginning, it sounds like someone clattering metal lids together.
- apophenic, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2The music probably helps focus them.
- atum2000, on 10/01/2008, -4/+1Buddha Bless You

Oh wait. - caffiendkitten, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2as cool as it is and looks what if he sneezes? start all over?
- bubut, on 10/01/2008, -0/+5I saw a group of monks do this at the University of Lousiana - Lafayette. It is absolutely amazing seeing them work.
- Digital.Totem, on 10/01/2008, -1/+6This is beautiful art. Normally I step up with the rest of the digg crowd and bash religion, but this religion seems rather beautiful in it's ideology and practices. I guess most of all it's because I've never really heard anyone say "Good evening sir have you accepted Buddha as your personal savior" or seen any war they started because they didn't like the way their neighbors looked. If all religion were so benign and neutral I probably wouldn't hate them.
- TheCatsProxy, on 10/01/2008, -1/+2that is amazing.

- MeltingIce, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2We had some monks come to my high school twice to make a sand mandala. Its an amazing process to watch.
- snafflepaffle, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2I remember a story from a few years back where a group of monks were creating a mandala and during a brief break a small child walked under the ropes holding back spectators and directly onto the half finished mandala. The monks just swept away the damaged parts and recreated them before finishing.
- TirkaTirka218, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1Would be a nice hobby to pick up...
- vetalvar, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1very impressive
- minestrone11, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2Anyone interested in the culture surrounding this should see Wheel of Time, a great Werner Herzog documentary.
- NSResponder, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2"There's no excuse for its existence "
Who died and made you Führer? If people will pay for it, it's going to exist, and your approval is neither sought nor required.
-jcr - gcod, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2The philosophy behind is cool too: all things material are seen as transitory.
This make me thought about the Prisoner’s Dilemma and remind me what someone answers to my comment on the theory.
He said that to remove the greed people have to gather material things is to make them “transitory” by abolishing the concept of Inheritance. If all that you have disappear after you’re gone what is the point of having more than you need.
They know everything those little bald guys… - NSResponder, on 10/04/2008, -0/+2"There's no excuse for its existence "
No excuse is needed. Your approval is neither sought nor required.
