Does Chrysler have a production-ready plug-in prototype?
gas2.org — If this is true, Chrysler has a production-ready plug-in hybrid prototype. Unfortunately, it also claims it will not hit the stores for 3-5 years. There doesn't seem to be any reason for this.

- mtbikemj, on 09/08/2008, -2/+26Why does the american car industry move this slow?
- whataboutdave, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3My guess is that your car is among the most expensive things you own. There is a reason for that.
Cars are large, complex things. They are enormously expensive to manufacture and sell in quantity. Car makers can't turn their production lines on a dime - it often takes years and many millions of dollars to even begin production of a new model. - TheMachine1, on 09/08/2008, -1/+5Car makers are low profit margin, conservative businesses that are more likely to be filing for bankruptcy at any given moment than doing anything innovative.
- DeuceDiggalow, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2They're obviously in bed with the oil industry.
- TPorter72, on 09/09/2008, -0/+0No, they just don't want to put $1500 of parts into an engine if it's not going to make it sell any better.

- seowriter, on 09/08/2008, -0/+17B-E-A-Utiful !
- digitalgopher, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2I agree. I just hope they keep it that way unlike what GM did with the Volt between the concept and the actual press images that came out today. what a disappointing. they turned a sleek, sexy looking car into another almost Prius look alike.
- elephantwaylon, on 09/08/2008, -0/+17We want it. We need it!
- kishosingh, on 09/08/2008, -1/+11Not only American car industry move slow, mtbikemj but also there are almost all car industry going slow because used car sell has increased.
- DeuceDiggalow, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1Also, don't forget the fact that they make a lot of crappy ugly cars
- beamin1, on 09/08/2008, -1/+17Because they have to wait for big oil to let them release it remember the saturn electric....
- BXRWXR, on 09/08/2008, -0/+19Too bad they can't call that one the 'Charger'.
/amirite? - claybodie, on 09/08/2008, -0/+4I wonder if they're going to wait for Volt hype to die down and then market this as the next wave of plug-in - those with a much larger driving range...
- LonestarRanger, on 09/08/2008, -0/+4I hate to be a naysayer, but how much would it cost? I can't imagine that any business would hold back a vastly superior product that people are clamoring for without a good reason. The reason is probably that it costs too much for the average person to be able to afford.
- DeuceDiggalow, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2I think they're just trying to sell off their current inventory of gas guzzlers
- WiseWeasel, on 09/08/2008, -1/+4Two words: battery costs. People won't pay a $10,000-20,000 premium for a plug-in hybrid. They're waiting for battery prices to fall.
- TPorter72, on 09/09/2008, -0/+0and better batteries to be produced. Which they are.
- mrgeekguy, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1No comment.
- DeuceDiggalow, on 09/09/2008, -1/+43-5 years? That's assuming they're even still in business in 3-5 years, ha! At least it's not nearly as ugly as the Chevy Volt.
- yourmanstan, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3one can dream
- eltardo, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2Hybrids don't make the industry as much money sadly. Big Oil is not a fan of eco friendly, and neither is Detroit.
I wish this was different. I'd buy a car that does 0-60 in 4 seconds and plugs in. heh - asus2000, on 09/09/2008, -1/+3With a big super charismatic presidential decision the size of the Manhattan project or Apollo they could have chosen to turn the entire economy electric after 9-11, but instead chose the retarded super-debt route through Afghanistan and Iraq, and apparently Iran soon, with a new cold war with Russia, etc... What a bunch of self-serving maroons.
- stephhicks68, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3Electric cars and/or plug-in electric hybrids are definitely in the future! So good to see Chrysler with a model.
- Leadman584, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1Plug-in Hybrid, as in, it still needs big oil to run. We need energy independence, like bye, bye big oil.
- TehJazz, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1Yeah this car sounds awesome, but theres no way it can be cheap. However, I'm very happy to see an American company that has made some progress in the field of electric hybrid cars.
