- arjie, on 07/22/2008, -0/+14Well, aircraft built that would only fly by ground effect haven't been too popular, but otherwise ground effect is immensely practical. I remember reading a long time ago that world war pilots would fly close to the sea level to preserve fuel.
This isn't a ground effect aircraft by the way, it was capable of high altitude flight unlike the ekranoplans.- edwartica, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Yeah, remember in the end of Jurassic Park when they were on the Helicopter? They were flying pretty damn close to the ocean.

This one is better
The flying ship
It's speed is probably 500km/h
But Russia has only one such a unit- lindstorm, on 07/22/2008, -0/+7The plane in your video Ekranoplan KM, aka Kaspian Sea Monster is a Ground effect vehicle, so it can not actually fly other than just few meters of the ground (or sea, in this case, but any flat surface is good). But Beriev VVA-14 is an actual airplane.
...but yes, you're right, Ekranoplan is an unbeleavable plane, with over 300 feet of length, and as the Beriev, this one's too a child of cold war.
Actually in US, Boeing Phantom Works has been working on an even bigger version of Ground effect vehicle codenamed Pelican (400ft long), but it's still only a concept.

- MizuhoChan, on 07/22/2008, -0/+6I bet than thing could make the Kessel run in less than twelve parsecs.
- walkman50, on 07/22/2008, -1/+2Nice photo, fugly plane. Looks even worse with wings, engines, etc. It's true: ugly planes can't fly, and helicopters are so ugly that gravity rejects them.

Um, isn't a parsec a unit of distance, not time?- infiniphunk, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1yeah, about 3.3 light-years.
the technology behind the Falcon's hyperdrive is so advanced, that its hard to comprehend the vast distances covered when the jump to hyperspace is made. Note that making the jump to hyperspace involves actually exceeding the speed of light. So its like a sports car that does 0 to 60 within a certain distance, like over a hundred feet or something.
- infiniphunk, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1yeah, about 3.3 light-years.
