sports.espn.go.com — The staff of the Brooklyn Cyclones minor league baseball team played for 24 hours nonstop over the weekend, battling little leaguers, circus clowns and waiters, among others, and raising $2,500 for local food pantries.

certainly conjures up an interesting image for me- hmmmok, on 10/11/2007, -6/+16circus clowns? I thought Manny Ramirez was in Boston playing the Yanks?
- InsultComedy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5I take it back, baseball is not boring and crooked. Where are my season tickets?
- blaaguuu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Lets see some fundamentals out there... And not Clown fundamentals!
/futurama - humperdeath, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Let see, thats about $100/ hr for the entire team. Maybe not the best ROI if you ask me.
- jodofashodo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3....They are obviously taking steroids...24 hours*
- Neiby, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16$2,500 for a 24-hour fund raise? That's pretty freaking lame. It's too bad they weren't able to raise a bit more.
- n8r0n, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15And how much have you raised lately?
- humperdeath, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I helped my church raise 2.6 hundred dollars at a Sunday bake sale last month!
There were three of us baking cookies and cakes. We each spent about $45 on ingredients and took 4 hrs to prep and cook. - kirb59y, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15I've never seen a decimal used on such a low amount.
- Bit0, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Church bake sale? BAWHA HA HA HA HA
Come on man... really? - elnerdo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2In contrast, my volunteer ambulance corps raised over 3000 dollars by having an eight hour coin toss (A coin toss is where you stand in an intersection and beg for money from passserbys).
So yeah, they should've done much better than that.
- Stradenko, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14$2500 raised by a 9-man baseball team in a 24-hour period.
That's just over $11.57/hour/person. Better than minimum wage...even if you assume the 9 players on the opposing team work for free. - f4nt0m4s, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19I'm Assistant General Manager Kevin Mahoney, and today is the longest day of my life....
- viserov, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Perfect.
- diggdong, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1...as opposed to Saturday into Sunday?
- TheEgghead, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5They only raised $2,500?? Assuming there were only 9 people on the field, that means each person generated $11/hour. Why didn't they just go mow lawns or something?
- chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7"I get $50,000 just to play one game of baseball? Well, it's a paycut, but what the heck. "
- verg, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1who cares? buried
- davidkeithjones, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5A prostitute would have raised more money and made more people happy.
- Nedlog23, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Only $2500? Well I guess it's the gesture that counts.
And now I'm going to do my amazing dig down disappearance by asking . . .
How the hell did this make front page? - xoticpt, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1$2500??? I hope thats missing a zero... I can stand on the street with a boot, and bring that in within 24 hours...
- Rethcir, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Go right ahead
- mbraynard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Assuming there were only nine people on the team, that averages to $11.57 per hour. What this tells me is that whomever was organizing the fundraising for the event was not on the ball.
- Cerebral, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2The problems with this is that 1. Nobody knew about it, 2. It's a minor league team and 3. Well... nobody knew about it.
It would be pretty awesome if each year they had two pro teams do this... say like the all-star game lasted 24 hours. They could earn tons of money. They could have fun with it too. Like they could make it so that whomever raises enough donations gets to play. You could do it per hour and so one guy could play for 6 hours straight and then not play two and play 6 more etc. It would be pretty awesome. I know the inherent problems are injury risk and such but it could be done. Hell it would be killer fun to have two popular teams play all day long... how about the Yanks and Sox. That would be interesting.- kingkilr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2No, if you do that you have to let the cubbies play!
- glamdr1ng, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7My fraternity raised over $23k when we had a 60-hour softball game. We didn't have circus clowns, but I do remember someone running around in a Radioactive Man suit.
- berb, on 10/11/2007, -1/+124 hours straight?
I can't imagine what kind of people would be paying the admission to see the 3AM game against the clowns. - MikeonTV, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0I thought a 3 hour game of baseball was boring (actually I quite like watching baseball games, I just couldn't resist)
- joerod, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Keyspan field is really nice, right on the Coney Island board walk.
- daveboudreau, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1How did they go 10-3? I think its awesome that they did this and I'm sure playing for 24 hours straight is ridiculously tough but what team of waiters, clowns or fans beat them in a game? even though its not the majors, I'm sure a staff of minor leaguers is still a quality bunch of players.
- dagobah77, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It was the employees of the team playing.
"The team, which included its general manager and assistant general manager and personnel from ticket sales, media relations, graphics and other departments..."
- dagobah77, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It was the employees of the team playing.
- kernelhappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2While I applaud the spirit, IMO the results are disappointing. As many others have pointed out they only yielded $11.57 per hour and if I had to guess, the $2500 raised doesn't factor in the cost of the facility (maintenance on the field, lighting, services, overtime for facility staff, etc).
I bet they would have raised more money if they just had the players do a clinic for little leaguers with the proceeds going to the charity. Bravo for doing something positive, but next time, think it through a little more. - xdavis24, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Can't we just be happy they did something?
