- thebaron2, on 08/27/2008, -8/+12But does anyone's fans stick by them for a century?
The cubs have, hands down, the most die hard fans in baseball. At home they're 40k+ for every game and when they're away at least 1/2 the crowd is rooting for them.
Sure, WGN's national coverage helps a lot, but still... their fan base is impressive. - mysedai, on 08/27/2008, -3/+3And Obama calls us fair weather fans...
- chadhuston, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2Went to my 2nd Cubs game this last Friday against the Nationals. Cubs went down 10-5 in the 8th inning and 3/4 of the stadium left. I saw a similar game at Fenway 2 years ago, looked like the stadium was full until the last pitch.
There are some die hard Cubs fans, but I think there are also a lot of fair weather fans at Wrigley any given day as well. - richlizard24, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4@thebaron2:
The Cubs fan base reminds me of the Red Wings fan base. You can go to away games and you would think that you were actually in Detroit. - IndigoMoss, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3I went to a concert in St.Pete about 4 months ago. We passed Tropicana Stadium, there was about 1000 people all wearing the blue. It was pretty amazing, not a single Devil Rays fan in sight. It was kinda like being in Chicago again, truly amazing.
- zacharytelschow, on 08/27/2008, -1/+1When your team loses for almost a century straight, you're not a diehard fan; you've decided to back a loser.
- sw1ft, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2If you watch a Cubs away game, it's almost a sure thing to hear a "LET'S GO CUBBIES, LET'S GO" chant from the crowd.

- JInnsbrook, on 08/27/2008, -6/+16Yeah .. who doesn't like the terrible sight lines... the concrete falling on your head... or the smell of urine throughout "Ballpark"...
- Primatelord, on 08/27/2008, -6/+5It only smells like urine when Southsiders come over. And the concrete stopped falling ages ago.
- jcharak58, on 08/27/2008, -1/+1by that I assume you mean drunk on Old Style and Mai Tai's. Because that was pretty sweet about the 2 Cubs games I've been to
- IndigoMoss, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1A friend of my brother's lived in the apartments behind Wrigley Field. He didn't live in one of the good ones with a good view, but the people that lived in those nice ones would invite everyone to go to their apartment to see the game. He told me it was a bitch to get any sort of view, because everyone wanted to look out the one window.

- BrentDPayne, on 08/27/2008, -8/+49I'm a Cubs fan but he has a point . . . not a one of them are watching the game closely. Interesting observation.
- thebaron2, on 08/27/2008, -3/+12Sure we are! It's such an old stadium there's not much to do BUT watch the game. We don't have a jumbotron with hi-tech graphic effects like newer stadiums, so we've actually got to pay attention as things happen.
I'd say 1/3 of the people show up to party, 1/3 show up to watch the game, and 1/3 do both.
Regardless - what does it matter? As long as you and whoever you're watching the game with are paying attention does it really make a difference if the chick 3 rows up is studying Zambrano's warmup throws or making out with the chick next to her? - TheMarenum, on 08/27/2008, -4/+9At least people actually show up at Cubs games. You can get in free at Sox games if you show up with 4 Coke cans. They can barely give that ***** away.
- brian_hundt, on 08/27/2008, -3/+5I'm also a Cubs fan and couldn't disagree with you more. Are you speaking for yourself or the other 40k+ other fans who routinely pack Wrigley Field?
In my experience, the average Cubs fan is more knowledgeable and attentive than the fans in other ballparks I've visited. - centran, on 08/27/2008, -3/+1Oh yeah... and like all the people at US Cellular field can watch the game through the clouds or like they are really watching the game while on the party deck...... MMmmmm party deck, one good thing about the Sox.

- lovek, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3I was at a game just the other night. Unfortunately the Royals aren't good enough or terrible enough to garner national fans.
Which is amazing considering how bad they've been the last few years.
At the game my friends and I discussed creating powder blue ribbons, thus making it the official color of those afflicted with "Royalsfandom".
The nice thing is, nobody can hate you for loving the Royals though. No one will argue with you. They'll just smile and say "Yeah, they're cool" then shake their head sadly toward the next person.
(But seriously... GO ROYALS!) - cloudcity, on 08/27/2008, -1/+1I love the Royals, and I'm not even from KC. Born and raised in Ohio, but at some point in time they became my team and I never looked back.
In fact, I saw them play the Southsiders in June before the SEED conference in Chicago.
I think things are looking up though: Gordon, Bulter, Aviles, Grienke, Teahen, Callipso, and Banny should be the core we build around. Meche, Guillen, and Grudzie should be put on the block ASAP to pick up a monster 1B with a bat, somebody like Adrian Gonzoles in SD. - FreddieD, on 08/27/2008, -1/+3Here is why the Royals are afterthoughts on virtually everybody's sports radars:
- They are not just perennial losers, but in the worst way possible. The Cubs have personality and history with Wrigley. Tampa Bay are darlings this year because they were an expansion team. The Royals have been losers for the last 23 years because not only do they not spend wisely on free agents, they have been HORRIBLE at drafting good talent. For as many top draft picks as they are allotted each year, they should have more to show for it than Alex Gordon.
- They are a football town. Kansas City absolutely loves their Chiefs whether they go 13-3 or 6-10. Stores are empty on Sunday afternoons during the games. It's like a larger city version of Green Bay. Royals fans are mostly fair weather fans for this reason. It is no different than St. Louis just with opposite sports. Everybody went ***** for the Rams from 1999-2002, but now that they are in the middle-to-lower-pack people go back to their first love, the Cardinals. - EndouOuto, on 08/27/2008, -2/+1Because I'm not from K.C.
- snotrokit, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3because George Brett retired
- dannythepan, on 09/05/2008, -0/+0i think it's quite obvious
- TheSarf, on 08/27/2008, -1/+16I think it has to do with the fact that Obama is a Senator from Illinois....and...I dunno, cause they aren't from ILLINOIS.
- dalnet22, on 08/27/2008, -6/+20My first thought was Obama's pretty stereotypical to say the Cubs fans aren't watching and that it's not serious. Sounds like a typical southsider to me.
- Insolent, on 08/27/2008, -9/+7I don't think you're capable of a first thought.

- QuadZeroRoute, on 08/27/2008, -9/+2Obama is just trying to get some of the Sox fans to vote for him....the Cubs fans are mostly liberals on the North Side of Chicago and he does not have to do anything to get them to vote for him. South Siders hate the North Side because it represents liberalism....lots of rainbow stickers on cars on the North Side of Chicago.
- illinoise89, on 08/27/2008, -2/+4What are you rambling about? I'm pretty sure Obama does not need help getting votes on the South Side.
- QuadZeroRoute, on 08/27/2008, -4/+3What are you rambling about? In the black neighborhoods no, but in the white neighborhoods I think he may.
Agree with me on this: the North Side is full of queers and strong liberals and the South Side is full of blacks. Anywhere there are not queers or blacks he is going to have a tough time. - jcharak58, on 08/27/2008, -1/+2FYI Obama is black..... I heard there are some black people on the South Side (at the very least the Obama family)
- mchisari, on 08/27/2008, -2/+5
I'm pretty sure Obama has Illinois completely shored up. It'll be a cold day in hell before McCain wins Illinois. There's no need whatsoever to pander on this issue. He probably just really is a Sox fan. - LloydBentsen, on 08/27/2008, -1/+3@ QuadZero Please become a Political Science professor. That was some of the most abrasive analysis I have ever read-- very entertaining.
- saikyan, on 08/27/2008, -1/+2Stop pretending you're from Chicago.
- QuadZeroRoute, on 08/27/2008, -4/+4LloydBentsen, the North Side can be very expensive. There are not that many single family homes that are not going for 1 million or more. A two flat can run you a few million on the North Side. If you look on the South Side you can get a single family home in the Beverly Morgan Park area for $400,000 to $500,000. Policemen and firemen have to remain within city limits for housing....and many choose the South Side because it allows them to buy homes as opposed to renting. As far as what I said about the North Side....it fits it to a "T."
saikyan, I am not pretending. I currently live in Chicago, Illinois The closest major intersection to my house is 43rd and Union. I am from Naperville, Illinois but came into the property when my grand mother passed away. The neighborhood is called Canaryville....it is a very Irish neighborhood.
Obama is not going to do well in many of the low crime areas....Beverly because they are predominantly white, conservative and police or fireman. - EmperorAwesome, on 08/27/2008, -2/+1@saikyan
Stop pretending 3,000,000 people haven't heard of digg. - flip2trip, on 08/27/2008, -1/+2@Quad--I was reading a story the other day about when Obama was running for state senate. It stated that he received a majority of his votes from Cook Co. Is this the area you are referring to?
- osko2052, on 08/27/2008, -2/+1Cook County is where the city of Chicago is located. It's also the county where all the dead voters reside that help Democrats tip the scales in their favor when they need some extra votes.
- mchisari, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2
@Quad: I live on the north side. The other day, I saw a beautiful, newly renovated two story + furnished basement home for $680,000. And this was about 1 mile west of the Wrigley Field. We saw two three bedroom condos in the same area in the $300's. And if you go far enough north or west, you're definitely not going to be paying those kinds of prices there.
So, I really don't know where you're getting your numbers from. - saikyan, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3"I am from Naperville"

- dalnet22, on 08/27/2008, -11/+7And it has nothing to do with the fact that he likes the Sox. It's that he made a blanket statement about Cub fans. You'd think a smooth talker would be wise enough to avoid stereotypes.
- zacharytelschow, on 08/27/2008, -1/+1People may say Obama is a smooth talker, but those that have actually heard him speak without a teleprompter may have a different opinion entirely.
- bmorrow, on 08/27/2008, -1/+12He has a 13 point lead in Illinois. I doubt he will lose the State. Even if he came out and said the Sox and Cubs both suck I doubt he would lose the State.

- QuadZeroRoute, on 08/27/2008, -5/+2He will not lose any votes, the North Side is a bunch of far left liberals....lots of rainbow stickers on cars on the North Side. Who are they going to vote for?
- FreddieD, on 08/27/2008, -1/+4He's going to roll in St. Louis. This city went 81% Kerry in 2004 and unless Obama claims that he enjoys little boys, he will have even higher numbers in November. Would be nice, though, if it will sway a few voters from the "Missouruh" part of Missouri.
- sheepdays, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3Good point. The Cards have a huge fan base through southern Illinois, Iowa, western Kentucky, western Indiana, most of Arkansas. And if you love the Cardinals, you can't be loving the Cubs.

And go Cubs!
- kidathinnes, on 08/27/2008, -4/+17I am no Cubs fan but to be fair, the fans at Wrigley are big time into games. Sure there is a ***** of drinking, but the fact they have no amenities(complex scoreboard, jumbo-tron, batting lineup) pretty much forces you to pay attention.
- orangederange, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1i agree Cubs fans are big time soooo into the games... look at Bartman? :P
- wiggles, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2You see a lot of people at Cub games with headphones on -- they're listening to the play-by-play on the radio.
- Hetman, on 08/27/2008, -1/+1I honestly do not blame bartman. Seriously you get excited when you are at a game and it is just an instict to put your hand out and catch a ball if it is comming your way. It sux but what can you do. There was an error right after that play anyways which would have got the cubs out of the inning if it didnt happen.
- hagan311, on 08/27/2008, -3/+1i guess when scoreboards are electronic that all the people in the stadium's eyes are glued to it. Wrigley field is just an old stadium where there are tons of people drinking and barely paying attention to the game. If you go to a game in April, not counting the first week, there is no one really there because it is too cold out. Cub fans are the absolute worst fans in all of sports.
- Hetman, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3I went to 3 games in april. They were all sold out. Yes everyone did not show up to the games. But they were at least 90-95% full. One of the main reasons for this is the tickets are cheaper in april and easier to get.
- kidathinnes, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2I went to the first series with the Reds this year (early April) and it was sold out. And that is against the ***** Reds (sadly my fav team)
- Hetman, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2I was at one of the red games too. I liked dusty baker. I was kind of pissed that people booed him. I like lou better but still dusty was not bad.

I dunno though, soccer really isnt that great to watch on tv either, but it is a hell of a sport. my girlfriend plays, you really have to be in shape to be good at it... and we plan on going overseas to watch some big games once we both finish school
the only game i can really watch on tv and be midly interested is american football to be honest.... the only sports i really actively participate in myself are bmx biking, snowboarding and every kind of motorsport i can find.
ok i deserve to be buried for writing so much useless *****. :) - nochilinopity, on 08/27/2008, -1/+8What about all the Central American, South American, and Asian countries that love baseball?
You don't have as many allies as you think. - j0hn, on 08/27/2008, -1/+8We aren't the only country that plays baseball...
- beastee, on 08/27/2008, -6/+2I've met your mom before, she told me her name was Baseball. She DOES in fact blow...quite well.
- bigmac375, on 08/27/2008, -10/+6I'm American, and I can't stand to watch baseball, on TV at least.
- Smurph0404, on 08/27/2008, -18/+15I love digg. You've got Bush being blamed for every bad thing that has ever happened to anyone, and then you've got stories about how Obama has a cute moment with his daughter and likes baseball.
- Ellsworthskate, on 08/27/2008, -1/+5I hear he's treated like a rockstar.
- oscenester, on 08/27/2008, -2/+18Bush caused the cubs to suck for 100 years. its true.
- evets616, on 08/27/2008, -2/+14When Obama is responsible for ***** our country up, we'll start blaming him, alright? Is that fair enough?
- saranac7, on 08/27/2008, -2/+3Amen brother, amen! this guy is the LAST REMAINING Bush support in the nation!
- okcomputer1982, on 08/27/2008, -5/+1***** you. two of my friends where killed by bush.

- FreddieD, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3I'm a die hard Cardinals fan but I have to say in all honesty that this is your best shot, as the Cubs are clearly the best team in baseball this year.
Then again, the Cardinals were the best in baseball in 2004 and 2005 and you see where that got them... we inexplicably needed a craptacular .500 season in order to actually win.
- FreddieD, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3I'm a die hard Cardinals fan but I have to say in all honesty that this is your best shot, as the Cubs are clearly the best team in baseball this year.
- btschul, on 08/27/2008, -16/+11Maybe of focusing on distracting ***** like this, we should instead concentrate on important things like the fact that Obama sings the praises of China's communist government. http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/Obama_now_on_rec ... http://townhall.com/columnists/AustinHill/2008/08/ ...

- TheInformer, on 08/27/2008, -7/+6This is a preview of what will happen if Obama is elected POTUS:
Trivial, "American Idol" intellect, smarmy stories will be the order of the day, while the gritty, real life, tough decisions stories such as oil, Russia, Iran, etc will be ignored.- Shiftgood, on 08/27/2008, -1/+1Oil: Hes for limited offshore drilling with a combined new energy plan. Thats his compromise.
Terrorists: They are in Packistan, we know that, so he is going to focus our military attention there, sending more troops and armor to kill terrorists where it counts. Pakistan is the one with all the nukes being hijacked.
Real Life: Lower taxes for the vast majority of americans to help pay for bills and live a better life style.
Real Life: Lower Health care rates (public and private health care, you can choose which hospital you want to go to, which doctor, what procedures you want, complete freedom) for individuals and businesses. (McCain is going to introduce a brand new tax on health care, your employer will probably drop your benifits and make you foot the even more expensive bill)
Dont be a victim of scare tactics and hyperbole, those are only supposed to work on the unintelligent.
*I have sources for all of my claims, they are all facts, if you want a list ill go dig it up for you. - kidathinnes, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Welcome to 5 years ago.

- EndouOuto, on 08/27/2008, -0/+0Sorry ma'am, sports not your thing?
- jvittetoe, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Where do you come off with something like that? I could care less what Obama's team is. Lets discuss real issues.
- Temo1, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1me.
- alpinweiss88, on 08/27/2008, -1/+0Well, I like the way he answered the question. But other than that, who gives a crap about baseball? The most annoying thing about baseball are the fans. Jesus, what a dumb sport. The only thing dumber is NASCAR.
- EndouOuto, on 08/27/2008, -0/+0Sorry ma'am, sports not your thing?
- BruisedGhost, on 08/27/2008, -9/+7Granted Wrigley Field is hands down the best stadium in all of baseball going to games there is seen as more of a status symbol so there a mostly people there who goto get drunk and not pay attention. Besides the Cell has much better food and watching Ozzie flip out is a wonderful experience
- Kenzan, on 08/27/2008, -12/+10I think we should choose our President based upon which sports teams he likes.
That makes sense.
/sarcasm.- bjs3171, on 08/27/2008, -0/+10yep. why is the political magazine that is Sports Illustrated asking questions about sports, anyway?
- EndouOuto, on 08/27/2008, -3/+0Woooosshhh
- BHO4Prez, on 08/27/2008, -14/+2I thought Obama's favorite sport was some goat head kicking game that they play in Kenya.
- dagnabbit, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3Oh I get it...you're ignorant! That was funny.
- marinLETOILE, on 08/27/2008, -13/+17Obama has it right. The Cubs are for tourists.
- PosedMagnet, on 08/27/2008, -7/+1That's weird... why does Chicago have 2 baseball teams?
Cubs and White Sox?- oscenester, on 08/27/2008, -2/+4Chicago only has one baseball team. The White Sox. ;]
- PosedMagnet, on 08/27/2008, -1/+1Why am I getting dugg down? WTF.
Seriously, why do they have 2 teams?- bjs3171, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2new york also has two teams. as do a few other states. they're both in different leagues.
- kidathinnes, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2NYC, LA, and Chi all have two teams because they are big cities.
- legendxx, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1First response from Google:
Back when there were two competing leagues Chicago had a team in each league. When the American and National leagues merged to create Major League Baseball, Chicago kept both teams. Now they have one team in each division. Just like New York has the Mets and the Yankees, Chicago has the White Soxs and the Cubs. The White Sox are in the American League, and the Cubs are in the National league.
- fissionignition, on 08/27/2008, -10/+15Psssh, he doesn't know what he's talking about, AL baseball's not real baseball...
- woofers07, on 08/27/2008, -1/+4Really? cause the last 15 allstar games disagrees.
- natenovs, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4it helps having an extra bonus player
- LloydBentsen, on 08/27/2008, -4/+1He's speaking of the DH. Terry Shiavo could manage an AL baseball game. However, the level of talent in the AL is clearly better, which has been demonstrated outside of just All-Star games.
- woofers07, on 08/27/2008, -1/+4Really? cause the last 15 allstar games disagrees.
- tman84, on 08/27/2008, -9/+7You can count on Digg to focus on serious political issues, especially when it comes to Obama. Not once have I seen an article dugg up about Obama's grand plans for change and how he plans to run this country. What I have seen is how Obama makes nice speeches, his daughter is cute, McCain is a crazy old man. But never any substance when it comes to Obama as President.
- evets616, on 08/27/2008, -2/+7You must have missed that week when he presented the most detailed and comprehensive energy plan for our country that a candidate proposed. There were plenty of idiot Republican replies focused on his advice to keep our tires inflated that ignored the rest of the excellent measures contained in the plan.
- bjs3171, on 08/27/2008, -1/+2bad timing?
- rasler, on 08/28/2008, -1/+1Stop being lazy and go do some research.

- SouljaBoySTFU, on 08/27/2008, -19/+1Yankees are the greatest, bitches.
- iPirate, on 08/27/2008, -6/+1I'm a Yankees fan too... but you don't have to be a dick about them being the greatest. You don't even have to say it. Everybody else already knows it.
- spunky1973, on 08/27/2008, -12/+7The White Sox are to Chicago like the Clippers are to L.A. Nobody really cares about them except some small portion of south-siders who think they are truer fans than the rest of the world because no one but them likes or wants to watch their team.
- krahzee, on 08/27/2008, -0/+10Bad example. The Lakers actually win titles. Unlike the Cubs, the White Sox have actually won one in the last 100 years.
- TheEgghead, on 08/27/2008, -5/+1Emphasis on _one_. Its not like the White Sox have been some powerhouse franchise. The Cubs have had more World Series appearances, more playoff appearances and a better overall record. When the Cubs win this year, what will the White Sox fans have to cling to?
- saranac7, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Yeah, Egghead they are also 25 years older and have more losses! I really enjoyed that 1945 series! Oh, yeah I wasn't even around then...
Rule #1 You got to win it to brag.
- saranac7, on 08/27/2008, -1/+1tell that to the 2 million folks who turned out for the parade!
- krahzee, on 08/27/2008, -0/+10Bad example. The Lakers actually win titles. Unlike the Cubs, the White Sox have actually won one in the last 100 years.
- oneredeye, on 08/27/2008, -13/+6People still watch baseball?
- SaperKain, on 08/27/2008, -2/+31Johnny McCain should go for those Cubs voters in the new ad. “Barack Obama just dissed you team, can we afford Sox fan in the white house?” I’m Johnny and I approve this message.
- Cyrock, on 08/27/2008, -1/+6POW
- StupotAce, on 08/27/2008, -0/+7You can argue baseball all day long. You can argue politics all day long.
Now that they've been combined, will anybody ever shut up? - REBrill, on 08/27/2008, -9/+3If he said Cubs I was SO going to vote for McCain!
- QuadZeroRoute, on 08/27/2008, -4/+2Obama is A CUB....he just watches the Sox and said that the Sox are the baseball team. So in this particular area he is correct. But he is a huge ***** liberal like all the Cub fans...probably even has a rainbow bumper sticker so he fits right in.
- Pledio, on 08/27/2008, -8/+3I love living in Chicago, I really do.
But I ***** hate this stupid ass rivalry. Fans from both sides are as equally retarded when it comes to their team. Read the dumb ass comments in that article, you'll find a bunch of people legitimately saying they're voting for Obama now, because he somehow is belittling the Cubs by saying he's a White Sox Fan.
I wish Comiskey, Soldier Field, Wrigley, and the United Center were all torn down, and all these retarded sports fans were shipped off to some podunk Midwest town, so they could infect another gene pool with their idiocy.- m3po, on 08/27/2008, -6/+1How elitest are you?
- Pledio, on 08/27/2008, -1/+4Enough to know how elitist is properly spelled.
- TheEgghead, on 08/27/2008, -3/+2You're really still that bitter over getting picked last in kickball when you were 9?
- Pledio, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3Actually, what happened is I grew up, and realized that sports has NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING, and that anyone who takes a rivalry beyond just a friendly one, and turns their love of a team into retarded bashing of another is an idiot.
And it's shows up so much in this town, it's disgusting. People get shot at games, people get their eyes gouged out over this rivalry? And for what? To prove that your team, which has a bunch of whiny millionaires, is better than the rival team that also has a bunch of whiny millionaires is better?
- Pledio, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3Actually, what happened is I grew up, and realized that sports has NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING, and that anyone who takes a rivalry beyond just a friendly one, and turns their love of a team into retarded bashing of another is an idiot.
- m3po, on 08/27/2008, -6/+1How elitest are you?
- Bulbospongiosus, on 08/27/2008, -2/+6He figures the White Sox fans are more likely to be swing voters.
- crazymonkey1, on 08/27/2008, -6/+5Do people actually use this ***** in determining who they're voting for? Pathetic, that's all I can say about this country anymore.
- EndouOuto, on 08/27/2008, -1/+0Wooosssshhh
- datacowboy, on 08/27/2008, -2/+28Awesome! I always found it stupid that politicians feel the need to straddle the fence on everything - even trivial stuff like sports. And I love sports. Obama is a Sox fan, and he proclaims it. How refreshing. Look, if a politician can't be honest about what sports team he/she follows, how can we expect his/her honesty on the much more critical issues?
It's a heck of a lot better than the typical lame response, "Oh I just hope for a good game.... and both sides play at their best." - leerayIG88, on 08/27/2008, -6/+1I pledge my allegiance to the flag.

"Okay, Bobby. What team are you a fan of?"
"The White Sox."
"Why's that?"
"Well, my parents are both White Sox fans, so I'm a White Sox fan too."
"That's not a good answer, Bobby. If your parents were both morons, would you be a moron too?"
