  • rootnik, on 01/22/2008, -3/+263He plays for UNC-Asheville, and is the slowest basketball player I have ever seen. He tires easily, so he only plays about 3 minutes at a time. The offense has to wait on him every trip down the court. He plays around 20 minutes a game, and can usually get a double/double (10+ points and rebounds) in that limited amount of time. Because of his size, he gets allot of fouls called on him.

    He is a surprisingly good passer, though I am not sure why he would bother passing the ball.

Yao, on the other hand, had very tall parents to begin with. His dad is 6'7" and his mom is 6'4". Maybe you'd expect 6'8"-7'0" out of that and not the 7'6" that he is, but his height is more understandable and is not related to any pituitary issues.

Obviously its tough to stop someone who can dunk without leaving his feet, but its a real disadvantage to your team if you're shorthanded every defensive possesion

      It comes down to a tradeoff with height bringing no wind, no touch, or plodding slowness. The most dominant interior players have been in the 6-11 to 7-1 range, guys who can be big and strong but still get up and down the court.

      Jokes aside though, your comment is not valid. Physical preparation has and is still changing a lot. Not the average in the NBA is 6'8". Eventually that will be the limit as nutrition, medical discoveries and just evolution (I bet kenny george will leave behind a handful of children) will push height further and further.
      As a comparison, modern chess players would destroy old prodigies like Morphy or Capablanca.

Think Shaq is big going between 325-350? This dude's 380! One reason he's so slow. Slow as in there was one recent game that he was standing guarding the rim. A player saw him there, ran in for a dunk and still was able to get it over him, his arms moved about a half second after the dunk was already through!

Shaq was a combo of huge size, speed and strength but now his size is his own worst enemy, as he continues to beat on his joints with every jump and step. However, he's had a hall of fame career before this has happened to him. My guess is that Kenny George's career will be even worse than Manute Bol's and he might not last more than three years, assuming he goes pro.

    And even though I said that he is not that good, I think he got a triple double against us (Campbell) earlier this year with 20 points, 12 boards and 10 rejections. it hurt to watch that...

He was preceded by Gheorge Muresan(starred in the Billy Crystal movie, my giant and a great snickers commercial), and Shawn Bradley as super tall guys to play in the NBA. Yao is the best out of those 3. Kenny George(the guy in the vid) is 2 inches taller than Yao, but because of physical issues, I doubt he'll have a very successful career even though he is a decent FT shooter. It is thought that he might have a benign tumor causing his body to produce excess growth hormone, because even at his age he is still growing. The world's tallest man suffered from this very same condition and it led to his eventual death.

          I agree with this thought completely, yes, in a free market society to strip away the free market would be an economic disaster but try conceptualizing if the free market never came into existence. Truly, it's a hard thought to try and comprehend but one must wonder would we have homeless people living on the street and at the opposite end of the spectrum would we have billionaires? In a idealistic perspective, it could result in a much more equitable society.

          Now, note I said idealistic and the reality could and would likely vary, but truly how good is the free market when the last time I read in Canada 1/4 of children are living in poverty.

Two, how difficult is it to do what you do? It's the reason why someone can make millions because they can make a baseball do funny things but a teacher makes a middle class salary. There are a lot of ways to measure talent. You may want to snivel at someone being tall, but everything that everyone has is a gift. Do you really think that Oluchi Onwegba or Gisele work to be beautiful? We respect very smart people moreso than we do the beautiful or the physically talented, but a mentally handicapped person will never be able to match wits with a genius, just as your average 6'0" person (my height) will never have the *talent* of being 7'8".

      Are you finding the cure for cancer? No? So then I guarantee that what you're doing is not all that important! Stop belittling others talents and cultivate yours. And stop thinking you're so important that you can make fun of what others do.

  • hendrixs, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3I have actually had a chance to watch George play against ETSU at UNCA. He has definitely improved since last year. As I recall, he is a sophomore at UNCA. He's a good player for them, but a bit slow getting up and down the court (I don't believe he started the game). It was very hard for us (ETSU) to guard him, however, we were able to eventually figure out an answer for him. If he had some more agility, he would be playing for UNC Chapel Hill.

Last I checked, he was 380 lbs! That weight will absolutely destroy his knees in a few years. Great that you can muscle your way in for a dunk. But he simply can't move out there. It's like he's stuck in cement. At 300 lbs, he'll still be more than big enough to get his position and nobody's blocking his shot at his height, at least not consistently anyway.
