Home Court Advantage Continues to Dominate the NBA Playoffs
lakermad.blogspot.com — In the second round of this year's NBA playoffs home court advantage seems to be a huge asset, 19 of 20 games played in the second round the home team has come out on top which is leading the last three series (Spurs/Hornets, Jazz/Lakers, Cavs/Celtics) to possible game sevens. The only loss was by the Orlando Magic against the Detroit Pistons.

Not news at all... dugg it just because its the playoffs!- ProjectGSX, on 05/16/2008, -1/+3Since Jordan retired, the home team has won 65% of their games in the 2nd round of the playoffs. This year its 95%. That is a major change so it certainly has not "been that way for years".
- Khanvalescent, on 05/16/2008, -1/+26Home team wining percent NBA history = 60%
Home team wining percent '07-08 = 95%- sportscrzy33, on 05/16/2008, -0/+11This year is definitely one of the NBA history books! I have never seen one like this in recent memory, I just hope the East, West and NBA finals live up to the excitement of the playoffs so far. It would be nice to finally see a competitive seven game series in the Finals rather than the ridiculous sweep of Cleveland last season, what a joke that was!
- H3BR3W, on 05/16/2008, -1/+4I called Lakers vs Celtics(80s style) at the beginning of the season. It could easily play out exactly so.
- blasian, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1it could easily not play out exactly so, too
- Jrr6415sun, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1wow pick the 2 highest seeded teams to go to the finals and then brag about it when it happens? yea ok..
- H3BR3W, on 05/17/2008, -1/+2Beginning of the regular season, not the playoff season. And it hasn't happened yet, what are you talking about? Celtics have to step it up if they're to hold it down at home, and I'm really hoping to see the Hornets face the Lakers in the West. CP3 vs MVP? Bound to be numerous highlights.
- misterdrumz, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Celtics would have taken game six if the referee hadn't called a ridiculous charge on Paul Pierce.
But god forbid that LeBron "screams at the slightest touch" James get called for stepping directly into the path of Pierce when the Celtics had a genuine chance to win the game, or at least push it to overtime
- H3BR3W, on 05/16/2008, -1/+4I called Lakers vs Celtics(80s style) at the beginning of the season. It could easily play out exactly so.
- imightbewrong, on 05/16/2008, -5/+3is that 95% for the playoffs or the entire season?
- orph3us, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2playoffs
- cm32438, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3Only the second round of the playoffs, actually
- cm32438, on 05/16/2008, -0/+7The first round of the playoffs was:
Home Wins: 30
Road Wins: 14
So, the playoffs so far, over all:
Home Wins: 49
Road Wins: 15
The home team has won 76.56% of the time

- mediaspree, on 05/16/2008, -10/+5Isn't that why they call it Home Court ADVANTAGE?
- akatherder, on 05/16/2008, -0/+4Yes, but it's usually just an advantage... not a near lock.
- idavidtang, on 05/16/2008, -1/+5One of the reasons I thought attributed to home court advantage was the psychological effect from hearing the crowds either cheer you on if you're the home team, or boo you if you're the away team.
- orph3us, on 05/16/2008, -0/+4well no ***** sherlock :P... the only question now is if the same psychological effect has effected the referees?
- TrentDeux, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1I think you should do a dissertation on the effect of cheering on the fragile psyche of the modern NBA player.
- TheXeno, on 05/16/2008, -9/+2Jazz won 2 games on the road, then lost one at home. Eat that, precedent.
- bstock, on 05/16/2008, -0/+5Actually it's up to 20/21 now, since San Antonio won a home court game against New Orleans last night.

"Why NBA teams can't win on the road"
by Bill Reynolds
Providence Journal
http://www.projo.com/sports/billreynolds/sp_bkn_re ...- Jambi, on 05/16/2008, -4/+2The article makes a very good point, which is why the NBA isn't really worth watching, for the most part. Also, any league that advertises a whiny pussy like LeBron "OMG you called a foul on ME?!" James as a star is full of it.
- OdinThor, on 05/16/2008, -1/+0Unfortunately, it does add a little bit of a WWE element to the sport. However, the better team, the team that plays better for that game, typically prevails even if they are the away team. It is perhaps because the teams are so evenly matched this year that the only real deciding factor becomes the home court officiating. Also, it seems like the refs are calling the playoffs more closely in the last couple years, which would accentuate any difference home court officiating would make. In the past, the refs were less apt to blow the whistle, letting the boys play and lessening the impact officiating had on the game.
- misterdrumz, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Fully agree with your point Jambi, Lebron can get calls as long as he yelps when going for a basket and it doesn't go in for once.
at least celtics have the final game and hopefully put the cavs to an early end of their playoff hopes
- Sroek, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3I think the real issue lies in the fact that away teams get mentally defeated due to being disgruntled and discouraged from calls that don't go their way, so they start playing without passion because of the uneven playing field. If you've noticed, its usually the star players who perform well regardless of arena, as they're mentally tough.
- ProjectGSX, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1I agree that officiating is bad and that the rules are unclear, but Im not sold on "star treatment". If star treatment prevailed, Amare Stoudemire doesnt get suspended for the playoffs. Tim Duncan doesnt get ejected by Joey Crawford for laughing while sitting on the bench.

- kirk89, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2It wont be like this in the finals... At least I hope.
- TrentDeux, on 05/16/2008, -4/+2The NBA, its faaaaaaantastic.
- ricepicker4000, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Going back to 80's i c
- anizzle, on 05/16/2008, -1/+8I'm always pleasantly surprised when something sports related makes it to the front page
- akphidelt, on 05/16/2008, -2/+6What I can't stand about these frikkin playoffs are those damn half face commercials. The first one I thought was cool... but after the 100th, they sicken me. Although the one with Adam Sandler and Baron Davis was funny as hell! Otherwise these playoffs rock... can't wait for tonight!
- sportscrzy33, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3I agree with you there brotha, the Shaq/Kobe one was pretty tight, but when they started doing it for every damn player in every series it got old quick.
- akphidelt, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Especially when you watch those games in Hi-Def... those dudes have some seriously ugly mugs, the second I saw the one I think with Mike Bibby and Paul Pierce was the second I lost all respect for those commercials!!
- sportscrzy33, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3I agree with you there brotha, the Shaq/Kobe one was pretty tight, but when they started doing it for every damn player in every series it got old quick.
- akphidelt, on 05/16/2008, -2/+11P.S. Can they please start calling technicals on Ginobli and Parker for their unreal continuous flops. I swear, count how many times Parker hits the court during a game... he jumps and auto-falls and Ginobli looks like he's being hit by Shaq every time he gets touched.
- thebigmammoo, on 05/16/2008, -1/+8If the refs would call offensive fouls (like they're supposed to) every time Chris Paul throws his elbows on a drive, maybe they wouldn't have to flop.
That fool is a walking offensive foul.- ricepicker4000, on 05/16/2008, -3/+2LOL? I sense that someones bitter cause their team is gonna get knocked the ***** out.
- thebigmammoo, on 05/16/2008, -1/+4Not bitter, just noticing the people in glass houses throwing stones.
- fictionalOne, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Sorry rice picker, Spurs gonna own the Hornets tonight! I'll rub it in your face tomorrow, okay?
- fictionalOne, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! GO SPURS!
- thebigmammoo, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Yeehawwww!!!! Go Spurs!
- akphidelt, on 05/16/2008, -2/+1That's not Chris Paul's elbow!! It's just a slight breeze coming from Chris as he runs by them!
- thebigmammoo, on 05/16/2008, -1/+4Right...and Robert Horry's essence dropped David West like a ragdoll.
- akphidelt, on 05/16/2008, -1/+0Wrong! Robert Horry's 6'8 240 lb body dropped an unknowing David West like a ragdoll!!
Not saying it was a foul, just a horrible comparison to the Oscar nominees, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli
- ricepicker4000, on 05/16/2008, -3/+2LOL? I sense that someones bitter cause their team is gonna get knocked the ***** out.
- TrentDeux, on 05/16/2008, -1/+5Its like watching an Italian football match. How many guys can go down clutching an ankle and be totally fine 1 minute later...

I wish the NBA would call a technical when Chris Paul embarrasses himself like in this gif from game 3. Get over it, practically all NBA players flop- akphidelt, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1I didn't see a flop... what a dirty player that Oberto is!!
- thebigmammoo, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2He should wear a tutu if he's going to be turning pirouettes like that.
- thebigmammoo, on 05/16/2008, -1/+8If the refs would call offensive fouls (like they're supposed to) every time Chris Paul throws his elbows on a drive, maybe they wouldn't have to flop.

even some of the best athletes in the sports world come out to see the Lakers like soccer superstar David Beckham - akatherder, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1It takes a lot for me to notice and comment on poor writing, but the author's English teacher should be fired. Just read this and note the punctuation, if nothing else.
"In Utah the crowd noise is deafening, you can't even hear yourself think let alone be able to communicate on the floor making it very difficult to get some chemistry together, the crowd is so hostile it makes it very hard to go into their house and pull out a win which reflects only having 4 losses at home this season. One thing about being a Lakers fan like myself it is really, really hard not to hate every team in the West, I like Golden State, BD is a baller and fun to watch, but I hate the Phoenix Suns, San Antonio Spurs and the Utah Jazz with a passion." - threemagic, on 05/17/2008, -2/+2The Pistons needed that win! And now Chauncey is healthy and ready for the Eastern Conference Finals (also known as The Pistons second home)
- Whiteknight117, on 05/17/2008, -0/+5It's the damn refs. In the Atlanta Boston series Atlanta has 69 more freethrow attempts.
- djstan627, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1why is the text so large? I'm not blind...
- harrison5394, on 05/17/2008, -1/+2So much for that. Lakers just won in Utah and move on to the Western Conference Finals.
- vmfan, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1Can Spurs finally win at home court of Hornest?!
- fictionalOne, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1They will!!! Against the Hornets that is.
- PetiteNova, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1I liked the second article better, it was better written then the original, Lakers Fan 4 Life? You are not Prince, that stuff doesn't fly.
The officiating for the NBA is the greatest mystery to me. Now I understand why. Go Boston.
