- AlwaysDuggDown, on 10/12/2007, -36/+8He can't help it....it's an involuntary reaction to realizing what a moron he is for pressuring management to get rid of Shaq because he didn't want to be part of a duo anymore.
- timbellomo, on 10/12/2007, -26/+21watch the clip... he's in the air, he gets bumped, he shoots his arm out to try and re-position his center -of-gravity (as he's been knocked off balance)...
It's a natural motion if you get pushed in the air, you try to compensate for the shift in weight to "right yourself". Both "victims" said it was an involuntary thing - why are you and the league office disagreeing with the people who got hit? - nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -22/+7Shaq is awesome. Kobe is a skinny pussy who takes his agression out on lawsuit-happy white girls. Sometimes I wish Shaq were my dad.

- Mootabolife, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3You don't strike a Serbian and expect to get away with it.
- ezflip, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1It is pretty obvious that he does it on purpose. Every time his ***** gets swatted, he feels there should be a foul so that he doesn't look like the washed up bum that he is. The only reason he still puts up 40+ points a game is because he is surrounded by worthless, horrible excuses for NBA players. When he doesn't hear the whistle, he try's to "draw" the foul by creating the contact. He's been doing it for years. Unfortunately for him, he is not on a championship team anymore so the refs aren't letting him get away with it anymore. Now all the refs have to do is start calling Shaq on the off arm during... every time he shoots the ball. Then I will be a happy NBA fan again.
- fober, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2There is no way that motion is part of his shooting stroke.
If it is, he must have some special powers guiding the ball to the rim considering how effective his jump shot is. - Scoresheet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23I've watched the youtube video, and whilst i agree that you do naturally push your arms up and down when you jump, in this case its pretty suspicious. its the force his arms swings down with that suggests it was deliberate.
In English football we had a player called Alan Shearer, who was one of the best headers of the ball ever. but he was also guilty on more than one occasion of using his arms whilst jumping to smack someone in the head deliberately.. In fact during the 1998 world cup, whilst David Beckham's sending off was touted as the reason we lost, it had more to do with Shearer elbowing the goal keeper just before Sol Campbell scored, meaning the goal was disallowed.
Put simply, you don't accidentally swing your arms down that hard. - rindin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34I wish people would keep their opinions out of article titles.
Buried... - Disgone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14The foul was just as much of an accident as me burying this story inaccurate was an accident.

I buried it 'on accident' too. - wild, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Isnt this his second suspension this year for an "accidental" elbow to someone's face?
And no, I didnt RTA, because I saw the news this morning. - DvS01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Why was "On Accident" in the digg headline? I didn't see those words used in the actual article.
- 350Zed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@DvS01
DIS.... Digger Illiteracy Syndrome. - jsballardx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I wish he would have taken Ginobili massive nose off with that elbow.
- arcele, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1If it's such a "natural motion" why are no other players slapping defenders during their follow throughs? Bottom line...Kobe is a classless jerk.
- turnTaker, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10this is bunk. the NBA made a mistake after the Ginobili incident and they had no choice but to be consistent lest they look like pushovers, so i can understand this while disagreeing with it.
i firmly believe the league is out to get Kobe. after his legal trouble, the league turned its focus to Wade and LeBron, your scandal-less, bright-eyed, bushy-tailed young superstars. they don't want to see Kobe win, they don't want him in the spotlight. and before any of you call him a rapist, he was never convicted...last time i checked that doesn't mean he's guilty in America. no matter what he does off the court, he's no doubt the best player in the world in terms of basketball skill. let there be no debate on that, regardless of whether he's a "team player" or not.
when Kobe fell from grace, the league ***** its pants because he was their golden boy. now, the league tries its utmost to make sure that there are two "faces of the league," in case one of them goes down like Kobe. Wade gets more love from the refs than any other player i've ever seen, if you so much as breathe on him wrong, he goes to the free throw line. Kobe used to be like that, now he gets called for fouls just like any other non-superstar. when Wade separated his shoulder, he was wheelchaired off the floor. i half-expected David Stern to come out there and carry him to the locker room. funny, i don't remember Gerald Wallace getting the chair when he separated his shoulder. anyways, just watch...the NBA will make a HUGE deal of Wade's return and celebrate him as a warrior who stepped up when his team needed him. and when Lebron clocked Wade with a rather hard foul, he wasn't even investigated!
i can understand the desire of the league to not allow any situation on the court that could escalate between two competitive, physically imposing, athletes in the heat of the moment. but singling out people is wrong and should be seen as such by fans. expect lots of debate and rule changes in the coming off season. - nickerbocker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3And people wonder why Raja Bell threw Kobe on this ass in last year's playoffs.
- fullmetal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4No Kobe hater here but that was no accident. It has happened before and he got suspended for it back then too. he did the same thing to Manu Ginobli, and not defending him. GO MAVS!!!!
- AHailstormcmn4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Granted the guy can play ball , but Kobe, as a person makes me puke. Whining and showing no regard for Raja Bell, " do I know this kid ? ", ( smirk , smirk ) the way he kisses up to the refs during another teams free throw, getting his way for the Shaq trade , problems in Aspen , and the stupid way he tries to injure an opponent with his flailing arms. Hey I played round ball and that is not a natural motion or follow through.. anyone who has aimed a cow hide globe at a hoop ten feet from the ground could tell you that your arm naturally does not wing off to the side like a piper cub or a B-52. The guy can play , but his personality stinks and I just get sick looking at his mug all over the place. The little girl makes me nauseous.
- AHailstormcmn4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When will L.A. ever learn? Phil Jackson ..Shut the he.. up! First he slams Jesus christ instead of Buddah or whatever a Zen Master does and then whines again about Kobe. He sees Kobe ever night so he knows the kid he has on the floor. Just shut up. All I hear about from the Laker fans is chest thumping when they win and moans and groans when they lose. Kobe tries to draw a foul without a natural shooting follow through and Phil wonders about a witch hunt ? Come on we have all seen Kobe initiate contact and he gets his fair share of no calls .. so shut up and play ball.
- mustbepatient, on 10/12/2007, -14/+16I haven't seen this particular incident, but the previous event seemed like an accident. It seems like the NBA is out to get Kobe for some reason (and this coming from a long-time Suns fan!).
- CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -13/+33Yeah, you're right, it can't be that he keeps hitting people in the face, it must be because he's black.
#sarcasm - TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Don't forget that about a week after Kobe got suspended the first time, Lebron laid out Wade by hitting him across the face, going for a steal late in the game. Wade fell, was down for a while and got back up. There was a foul called on that play as well, but the league said they never even bothered to review the play and weren't going to suspend Lebron.
So, to me, there does seem to be a little bit of a double standard going on here. Especially since they suspended Kobe both times without hesitation, but didn't even think Lebron's play (which was obviously an accident since Lebron and Wade are good friends) wasn't even considered for REVIEW, much less suspension. - Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -12/+14it looks exactly like the Manu ginobli hit. Once can be an accident, twice in like 40 days is kinda pushing it.
He absolutely deserved the suspension. - Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4The play with lebron was very clearly different.
He was trying to foul (late game situation) and it actually was accidental. You could see his instant reaction that, "*****, I didnt mean to hurt him" look on his face. You said it yourself, they didn't suspend Lebron because they had no reason to believe he was purposely trying to hurt anyone, or play dirty basketball.
Kobe, however, didn't flail his elbows out by accident. - skyfire1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3"(which was obviously an accident since Lebron and Wade are good friends)"
No ***** Sherlock. Maybe Wade didn't want his friend to get into trouble. - TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"No ***** Sherlock. Maybe Wade didn't want his friend to get into trouble."
You think? Wow, what a revelation.
Unfortunately, Wade doesn't decide who gets suspended or not. The league officials do, and they are supposed to be unbiased.
It doesn't matter that Lebron was trying to foul, you can't foul someone by punching them in the face. Hell, if it was about swinging elbows, Mutombo would have spent half his career suspended, considering how many people he has knocked out, on accident. - wild, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1O come one. All NBA stars get special treatment. From Shaq dropping his shoulders to Kobe and his 5 step dunks. The league treats its superstars different. Thats what you get win individuals have the spotlight, good and bad.
- hipnerd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@TheCount: "It doesn't matter that Lebron was trying to foul."
Actually, it does. You get called for a flagrant only if it is determine that there was "unnecessary contact committed by a player against an opponent." Generally that is interpreted to mean that there was no legitimate basketball purpose for the motion. You need to be going after the ball on defense. Intentionally fouling to stop the clock is also acceptable. On offense, your shooting motion is generally exempt.
The flagrant comes into play when the contact is "unnecessary." Generally, that is interpreted to mean fouls intending to hurt the other player or recklessly putting them in danger. Accidents are usually not considered flagrants, even if injuries result.
- CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -13/+33Yeah, you're right, it can't be that he keeps hitting people in the face, it must be because he's black.
- hazard, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21This incident makes the last one NOT look like an accident. You can see he forcefully swings his elbow down on the defender's face, just like last time. People say this is normal, but it only seems to happen to him...He's clearly frustrated in LA, or just losing in general. He clearly swings his arm sideways after shooting, no one fully extends their arm after shooting. And he hasnt done it throughout his career, just in another season he will probably miss the playoffs. You'd think hes getting paid all that money he shouldnt be such a sore loser.

Maybe it's just an involuntary tic. You know, like George had in that one Seinfeld episode. He can't help it! - MilkDaddy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5@hazard
Agreed. Once is an accident, twice is a pattern. Punishment is needed so that it doesn't keep happening. - nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I don't know, in the video, the first two times he's being pushed off balance as he shoots. If you jump up in the air and get pushed off balance it's pretty natural to throw your arms out. In the other clips (where he doesn't elbow) he's just taking jump shots with someone in front of him.
- timbellomo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6exactly, it's a center-of-gravity involuntary motion... you brain says, "uh, oh -- i'm off-balance -- quick, CORRECT!" So you shoot your arm our to try and compensate for the displacement.
- Akronos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Maybe it's more like a "Get out of my face!" type of reaction after getting blocked. Not sure really, but for all I know, it could have been an instinctive reflex. I mean, I'm sure he would have learned his lesson the first time he did it if it was a voluntary thing.
- danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The Ginobli one looks much worse to me. There wasn't even much contact from Ginobli, like the most recent. They both look very deliberate to me and I'm surprised he didn't get a bigger suspension. Flailing your arms from being pushed off balance is one thing but it is whole different story to have you elbow land directly on their face both times with much more force then a flailing would cause.
- K-Flow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1i do think kobe did it on purpose but the lakers will most likely go to the play offs, being second in the west, 6th seed right now. but yeah, they aren't playing the best ball right now

- reynoldd3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Phil Jackson(coach of the Lakers) says he will be submitting over 50 clips where Kobe, in the past, swings out his arm after he shoots, to the NBA office. Therefore Kobe shouldn't have to change the way he plays the game, but the defender should just watch out next time.
- Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7They don't tell Shaq's defenders to 'look out', cause Shaq's elbows might hit their face.

- redcard, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9I am a soccer referee who does games at a pretty decently high level.
Let me assure you, at the higher levels of their games, athletes do not do much (if anything) "by accident." They are oftentimes very much in control of their bodies, and have been doing things to get the advantage as they always have been.
Kobe's no different.- humperdeath, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Yes he is.
- sjspread, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6Kind of like he "accidentally" anally raped that girl... Just because he's a popular star doesn't stop him from being a thug.

2. Who gives a *****.- libertao, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12. About Kobe or saying "on accident" vs. "by accident"?
- letuescarpe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"By accident" isn't really any better than "on accident." They both sound awkward and childish. "Kobe Bryant Suspended For Accidentally Elbowing Another Player" sounds better and gives the sentence more impact.
Yes, I am a technical writer. I proofread websites for fun. - Humptydank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@letuescarpe
With all due respect, if you're defending "on accident" as being equivalent to "by accident" you shouldn't be proofreading anything. It's "on purpose," but "by accident." "On accident" could be thinly defended as a regionalism, but so could the Southern "y'all" or the New York "I gotsta go get on line for a hotdog," and none should be defended as canonical English.
In fact, people can say or write whatever they want, but if a discussion of what's technically right and wrong comes up, let's try to keep some minimal standards in place for the language.

- Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5But he did say that "Kobe was trying to draw a foul"
And I don't see anything wrong with the NBA trying to eliminate dirty plays that cause injuries.
I didnt mean to hurt him, but i did mean to swing my arm at his face. Oh, ok.. all's well.

- Chode2235, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Kobe's old hat now. With bigger and younger stars like Lebron and Wade, et al., they don't really need Kobe to draw the fans and the crowd.
But every story needs a villan, this kind of reminds me when the Rock went corporate and changed the peoples elbow to the corporate elbow.
- Chode2235, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Kobe's old hat now. With bigger and younger stars like Lebron and Wade, et al., they don't really need Kobe to draw the fans and the crowd.
- broomett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If it was an accident, it wouldn't be the second time he got suspended for it. He is doing it deliberately. Notice he only has these "adccidents" whenever he is pissed off at a defender for some other reason.
It is kind of like Roger Clemens' apologists talking about how whenever he hits a player in the HEAD with a fast ball, they say "He is just pitching inside to back the player off hte plate and it slipped. Amazing how this pitcher with GREAT control only has the ball "slip" out of his hands against players who just hit grand slams against him the previous at bat, or after he just gave up a bunch of runs in an inning. - MaXPL, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2kobe bryant is a douche. same goes for that duke player who swings "at the ball" with his elbow.
the commentator for in that duke-unc game was a complete moron. - zomgflamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2this ***** used to happen all the time back in the days, hell they would even start throwing punches at each other and there would be no consequences. By suspending Kobe, people who get screwed are the fans who paid load of money to watch Kobe play against their home team.

- yourfault1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ummm... this is also OLD sports news on the front page of digg... Kobe was suspended for LAST night's game against the Bucks...
- choopie911, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Buried, just becuase you said "on accident" not "by accident."
- mogdor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0So he doesn't get paid for 1 game, boo frickety hoo. What kind of world do we live in where kids starve to death everyday while others get paid obscene amounts of money to play basketball. Pro athletes should get a salary cap of $250k a year tops, this is ridiculous.
- txcrew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Awww Kobe. I'll shed $17,718,750 worth of tears for you. :|
- MessiR10, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1kobe the best player in the NBA right now, he needs to stop swinging those damm elbows it makes him look like a dirty player
- TwilightKing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3By accident... By accident... By accident... By accident... By accident... By accident... By accident... By accident... By accident... By accident... By accident... By accident... By accident...
Read and repeat.. - Araxen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1marked inaccurate, kobe has already been suspended once for this again Manu on the Spurs and this was just as intentional as the elbow he threw against Manu. He should have gotten no less than 5 games as this was a second offense, but as usual the NBA is trying to protect kobe and only suspend one game.
- CoolWind, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I hope the NBA continues to suspend dirty players. It's the only way to stop them. Kobe is a jerk. The game is bigger than he is and he needs to learn it. Play fair or sit down.
- discochew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Inaccurate headline. You can't report on someone's intention, hence why the original article doesn't.
- andy3109, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kobe has done the exact same move twice. Not only that, but that move doesn't only belong to Kobe...it is a well known [dirty] move done by shooters trying to draw a foul or injure a nagging opponent without getting in trouble.
- and1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3The only time Kobe swings his elbow is when he gets block; and he does this to try and regain possession of the basketball. When Kobe has an open and clear shot, there's no need for him to swing the elbow.
In my opinion, the swing of the elbow when trying to regain the basketball in mid air is a natural move.
Try it next your at the park. - acirrone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2By Accident----On Purpose.....not to be confused
- acirrone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2oops...I should read more...
- dmightx, on 09/21/2008, -1/+2Lots of Kobe haters here! Digg me down for liking Kobe?
- citizenmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can like Kobe, no one ever said anything about not being able to like Kobe. You just have to be blind to see that he has done this twice now. Once is an accident. Twice is on purpose. How do you explain it happening twice as anything but on purpose?
- willk281, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the title is good b/c anyone that knows jack about sports knows that Kobe is doing it on purpose, because as long as he's alive he will try to keep the spotlight on himself (not always a bad thing, but look what kind of petty stuff it leads to). When I first read the title, it just seemed natural for me to say it again in my head in a very sarcastic (emphasizing "another" while rolling my eyes) tone, so I thought it was humorous.
