NBA calls for a rare do-over in Hawks-Heat game
sports.yahoo.com — For the first time since 1982, the NBA is sending two teams back to the court for a do-over. The Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat must replay the final 51.9 seconds of their game last month because the official scorer ruled incorrectly that Shaquille O'Neal fouled out, the league said Friday. The Hawks won 117-111 at home in overtime Dec.

- jwShort, on 01/13/2008, -0/+51so I wonder if they will pro-rate the price of the tickets to like .23 cents.
- thafooz, on 01/13/2008, -0/+23It's going to be played at the beginning of the next Hawks-Heat game.
- mV0G7, on 01/14/2008, -5/+2Here's a clip of the the incorrect 51.9 seconds

- iraq, on 01/13/2008, -1/+56Haha, what an event.. will it be televised? :)
- mydigga, on 01/13/2008, -4/+24I hear tickets are going for $1.59.
- kevinwiz, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2Most likely because it will be played before the main event the next time Heat and Hawks play.
- capthamp, on 01/13/2008, -5/+4Crap just when the Hawks where getting passed as the worst sports team here in Atlanta by the Falcons this happens. When will we get some good sports news in the ATL.
- INDOAZZ, on 01/13/2008, -6/+2When Pete Carrol signs with the FLUNK-INS!
- capthamp, on 01/13/2008, -4/+3Yea thats what we need another crappy college coach from a weak college conference. PETE CARROL SUCKS!!!
- actionmann50, on 01/13/2008, -4/+3Pete Carroll has coached in the NFL before (though with mixed results). Also you may be overlooking a couple NCAA championships.
- Ajajadude, on 01/13/2008, -0/+5Emphasis on "mixed results." He'd be better off staying in the NCAA where he can actually win on a regular basis.
- DESTROYER2118, on 01/13/2008, -1/+4SEC>Pete Carrol

- stopbrorape, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1i don't know if you know this but you have BYRON LEFTWICH AND JOEY HARRINGTON!
- sfrench, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2He said *good* news.
- Jeffler, on 01/13/2008, -1/+11No good sports news in Atlanta? Ilya Kovalchuk is leading the NHL in Goals and might be the first to score 60 in 11 years! On top of that, you got Mark Recchi for free and he's lighting it up, and now the Thrashers are 2 points away from leading the division, even though they started the season 0-6! To put the icing on the cake, the NHL all star game is coming there in 3 weeks! Quit bitching.
- childprey, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3too bad all those goals are from a team that is having trouble staying in playoff contention
- Jeffler, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1A win away from the division lead isn't too bad IMO...
- sgtbutterscotch, on 01/13/2008, -1/+1The strike (or lockout?) year was supposed to be our year, but after that I never found the team to have as much heart since.
- capthamp, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1You are right Kovy is lighting it up but do you really think the thrashers are going anywhere. I'm a huge hockey fan and I love the Thrashers but we didn't improve the team that got swept out of the playoffs at all this off season. Recchi is great also but he's not the only thing they need. I didn't forget about the All Star game which should be great I will be there and can't wait for it.
- childprey, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3too bad all those goals are from a team that is having trouble staying in playoff contention
- edicius, on 01/13/2008, -0/+4Not to mention Glavine coming back to the Braves.
- fade70black, on 01/13/2008, -0/+0Hawks have young talent- Smith, Horford, Williams, so they'll be a force when the Spurs all break a hip. Plus they're almost .500 which is enough to make the playoffs in the (L)Eastern conference.
- INDOAZZ, on 01/13/2008, -6/+2When Pete Carrol signs with the FLUNK-INS!
- thafooz, on 01/13/2008, -6/+26I didn't realize that was an option. Does this mean can we get a do-over for the botched officiating in game 5 of the 2006 Heat/Mavs finals?
- INDOAZZ, on 01/13/2008, -2/+9You probably want all of round 1 back in 2007 too!
- 3rnesto, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT
- thafooz, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1I don't have any particular love for the Mavs (Celtics fan); that Oakland/Dallas series was great. I just know horrible officiating when I see it.
- HigherLogic, on 01/13/2008, -0/+4Only if Phoenix can get back game 5 of the 2007 Suns/Spurs conference finals...
- Jerky1312, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1It's not the same situation, this is an error in enforcing the rules correctly, its not an error in judgement (which is subjective to a degree) of a specific play, which happens in every game.
- INDOAZZ, on 01/13/2008, -2/+9You probably want all of round 1 back in 2007 too!
- INDOAZZ, on 01/13/2008, -12/+4This is pointless, both teams are dismal. If anyone thinks the SQAWKs have a chance to make the 8th seed in the EAST, YOU ARE DREAMING!!!!!!!!!! The Heat might as well tank the season for more ping pong balls in the LAME lottery? I hope the lights go out in the stadium.
- stopbrorape, on 01/13/2008, -2/+3BUT THE HAWKS HAVE NEW UNIFORMS!!!!!
- sgtbutterscotch, on 01/13/2008, -1/+2Actually, I don't think making the 8th seed in the East should be that hard, especially since the Hawks are now in or around the 8th seed.
- brentinkc, on 01/13/2008, -23/+16More evidence that the NBA is a laughing stock.
- Traiklin, on 01/13/2008, -5/+4aren't all sports at this point a laughing stock?
- mal1964, on 01/13/2008, -1/+6I bet the bookies didn't.
- ScottMitchell, on 01/13/2008, -0/+6How does it work in Vegas, where gambling is legal? I mean, what if you bet on this game, legitimately, and won the initial rules, but the game gets replayed and with the final result, you would have lost? Does Tony come knocking for the money you won? What if your fortunes changed? Does MGM or Caesars owe you a check now?
- maddhopps, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1All those outcomes are far too complicated and thus unfeasible. This will be a totally separate event, and Vegas will certainly take bets on it.

- indraneel24, on 01/13/2008, -9/+4Wow. This proves the NBA favors the Heat; as if the other countless times where Miami got the benefit of the call weren't enough.
Though, as a Nets fan, I'd have to say go Heat; the Hawks are actually half decent this year. - Lax32, on 01/13/2008, -0/+26Am I the only one wondering how nobody noticed? I mean, the number of fouls someone has is a pretty easy number to keep track of. How is it nobody noticed that he really had 5 and not 6?
- mal1964, on 01/13/2008, -0/+4Somebody did, thats why they did the do over.
- esharifi, on 01/13/2008, -0/+0How did someone not notice during the game? And didn't Shaq himself know how many fouls he had?
- mal1964, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1it took a while but i found it, Following the game, the official box score showed O'Neal with five fouls before the Hawks issued a corrected box score that had him with six.

- zoom1928, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1They did notice during the game, but the dishonest Atlanta idiots wouldn't admit to their wrongdoing.

- Zaneris, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1Same way I've fired 4 or 6 shots with my rifle on the range numerous times when I was supposed to fire 5, lol...
- mal1964, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1Yeah but then you cant shoot no more, a player has to be told he cant shoot no more
- mal1964, on 01/13/2008, -0/+4Somebody did, thats why they did the do over.
- mvanhorn, on 01/13/2008, -1/+40Seeing this headline I totally thought it was from TheOnion
- mone5681, on 01/13/2008, -1/+4With all the mistakes made by the italian referee (here in Italy) there would be a lot of do-over!
- braudio, on 01/13/2008, -3/+4This is crazy. How come it took nearly a month for this to be made official? This should have been reviewed the next day and then announced that the 51 seconds would be played a month later. What a joke of a league.
- phr0stbyte, on 01/13/2008, -8/+2is all news on digg as old as the sports news is
- Jeffler, on 01/13/2008, -1/+5Old? This article is from yesterday!
- elshizzo, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3Ha, fkin awesome. The game will be over before the players even break a sweat
- dedelman912, on 01/13/2008, -14/+7who cares? its basketball
- SLockhart, on 01/13/2008, -2/+2Yeah really, basketball is the only womens sport played at the professional level by men.
- dedelman912, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2im happy you agree with me cause apparently no one else does.
- SLockhart, on 01/13/2008, -2/+2Yeah really, basketball is the only womens sport played at the professional level by men.
- tacklebox, on 01/13/2008, -17/+6They still play basketball after Larry Bird retired?
- xTRUMANx, on 01/13/2008, -0/+10You apparently missed the Jordan era. That's very sad...
- esharifi, on 01/13/2008, -1/+0...And the Kobe era.
- thafooz, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2Kobe doesn't belong in the same breath as Jordan & Bird. Magic, sure :)
- thafooz, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1You sound like a Boston fan that hasn't heard that we have KG now.
- Shakermaker, on 01/13/2008, -1/+15WTF? Why not say the officials made a mistake and be done with it? It happens all the time in sports...
- kirstpo, on 01/13/2008, -0/+4Yeah, officials make stupid calls that ruin the game for teams all the time in sports. Like the Seahawks and Steelers superbowl game 2 years ago. Bill Leavy, the head coach for that game, totally helped the Steelers win.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2I think since the game was at Atlanta and the Hawks' personal scorekeepers ruled that Shaq fouled at, that is situation is different.
- s1mph0ny, on 01/13/2008, -1/+1This wasn't an official's mistake, they assessed a foul to Haslem, and the Hawks staff gave it to Shaq instead. It's hard to say if this was intentional, but it was sneaky either way.

- getatmedigg, on 01/13/2008, -2/+13Now if they could only re-do the 1995 Knicks v. Pacers and Larry Johnson's 4pt play.
- badenglishihave, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1I have no clue what you are talking about but I dugg you cause it sounds interesting. Link?

- mal1964, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1I dugg you up for reminding me about how Larry Johnson was a man among boys when he played for UNLV
- getatmedigg, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1No foul-Pacers were robbed-LOL.
- ultimathule, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1So, are you a Knicks fan or what?

- mygtricks, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1Ha ha great event..
- EmitStop, on 01/13/2008, -7/+5Shaq isn't still on the Lakers? Oh well I don't really follow basketball.
- esharifi, on 01/13/2008, -1/+4He plays soccer now.
- socomoddjob, on 01/13/2008, -6/+2The NBA is horrible.....
- AnimalTaglits, on 01/13/2008, -0/+7I wish I could go back to the last 15min 39 of my calc final last semester.
- phyx726, on 01/13/2008, -0/+4Haven't seen a do-over since playing kickball when I was 7.
- krazyjosh5, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3Does anyone have a YouTube clip of these crucial 51.9 seconds?
- TheGooseyOne, on 01/13/2008, -2/+5now lets just redo Game 6 of the Kings vs. Lakers in the 2002 WCF
- midhqel, on 01/14/2008, -1/+0Not just game 6, almost the entire round. I am/was a Chicago Bulls fan so I really did not care who won that but the refs gave that round to the Lakers. I have not followed the NBA regularly since. It was the first time I felt the NBA is fixed. The recently busted ref was swept under the table pretty well but to me most NBA games are still fixed.
- stereoradiation, on 01/13/2008, -2/+3The 1972 men's gold medal game needs a do-over.
- SLockhart, on 01/13/2008, -0/+4They should redo the third overtime period of the '99 Stanley cup finals. Hulls's skate was clearly in the crease.
- thafooz, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2They should just re-do all of the NHL past the early 90's; we could prevent over-expansion/insane ticket prices/strikes from destroying the league.
- Jerky1312, on 01/13/2008, -2/+1The entire game should be replayed, not just the last 51.9 seconds. I think that decision is even worse than the scorer making a mistake on his foul count. I recall a referee giving one player two yellow cards, but not giving him the automatic red and the guy continued to play the rest of the game, nobody on the pitch noticed. Only after fans watching the game reported to the press and teams were the league made aware of the incident and the entire game had to be replayed at a later date.
For those wondering why this specific game is being replayed and not all the games that had poor officiating, well its because of just that, its poor officiating. No referee/official is perfect and poor and bad judgement within games is accepted and hence you do not get to replay games over again. In this situation, it was not poor judgement, but an incorrect enforcement of the rules, in which case, any team can protest the game and request it be replayed. - yacks, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1So can the Browns get a redo the Bottlegate against the Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Cleveland Browns, December 16th, 2001?
