10 Richest People of All Time and How They Made Their Money
neatorama.com — Quick: who is the richest man of all time? Bill Gates? Warren Buffet? Not even close, though there's no denying they're very, very rich. The richest man of all time, when wealth is measured as a percentage of the national economy, was John D. Rockefeller, whose fortunes made Gates' and Buffet's look downright puny.

- Vigilo, on 07/10/2008, -2/+6This comment is very indicative of how stupid the common folk are. The Rockefellers are still ruling us along with the Rothschilds and the Windsors and the Oppenheimers and the Warburgs and the House of Orange.
We just suck our thumbs and reference a TV show while they destroy our currency, make millions lose there homes and literally feed off our hard work.
This comment will get buried so all i have to say is the only way we can fight them is to live well but don't get in debt. Eat well don't drink Aspartame(diet coke or anything else that is diet), try and drink water without fluoride, don't eat foods with Monosodium Glutamate(MSG) you would be surprised how many things its in. Live a long time and stay healthy these scumbags hate that.

- bmcnally, on 07/09/2008, -4/+23Should emperors and dictators really be on this list?
- BenvolioZF, on 07/10/2008, -6/+3I don't think they should either, the article is "10 Richest PEOPLE"
- zerries, on 07/10/2008, -0/+8So emperors and dictators aren't really people huh? No wonder people follow them so blindly.
- Clad, on 07/10/2008, -1/+4I think so. I mean, most of these people were the 'Emperors'' of their particular industry anyway, IE Rockefeller was the Emperor of Oil at his time.
- bugsy187, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3They were rich, so still fit the criteria. Do you think ruthlessness isn't a factor today?

- MasterGrief, on 07/10/2008, -2/+7Anyone else think it's kind of depressing that every one of the ten wealthiest men of all time are long dead?
- jave8u, on 07/10/2008, -1/+7You're sad that some of the richest people of all time aren't alive? Why?
- MasterGrief, on 07/10/2008, -0/+5Just because they were among the richest doesn't mean they were bad... Most of them, yeah, probably, but at least there's Andrew Carnegie. And in any case, I think the biggest problem I have with this is that it seems to imply that the door to that kind of wealth is closed to us, now.

- jmpeagle, on 07/10/2008, -0/+10that wealth is divided over many people...this isn't richest families but richest people. No individual rothschild was close to the top 10. If we went by families then the house of Saud which has an entire country named after them and pretty much owens Saudi Arabia's oil wealth would probably be up top. The British royal family wouldn't be too far behind considering all the land they own.
- blackjack75, on 07/10/2008, -0/+5The house of Saud doesn't "pretty much" own Saudi Arabia's oil wealth. They litterally own Arabia (hence the name Saudi Arabia).

- JoshReflek, on 07/10/2008, -9/+22. Andrew Carnegie
Peak wealth: $298.3 billion
Carnegie gave away more than $350 million or almost 90% of his fortune.
350 million = 90% of 298.3 billion
..............what?- jmpeagle, on 07/10/2008, -0/+6it's adjusted for inflation...the 350 million is 90% of his peak fortune which in 2007 dollars would be 298.3 billion
- MD12, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1Quick, we must castrate them for their flawed mathematics!
- Ryan166, on 07/10/2008, -0/+13How the hell did they figure out Crassus's wealth in terms of 2007 US dollars?

- 9bpm9, on 07/10/2008, -6/+7Warlords, backstabbers, and thieves. Great list.
- Scheissen, on 07/10/2008, -1/+3You would make an excellent addition. Carnegie and Rockefeller earned their fortune. All of the others stole it.

- ctrlfreak13, on 07/10/2008, -0/+9If you're interested, a fantastic book about Andrew Carnegie's life that reads almost like a thriller is "Meet You In Hell". And if anyone doesn't see the connection, Andrew Carnegie and Andrew Mellon together founded Carnegie-Mellon University. Carnegie Hall and about 3000 libraries worldwide were also created by Carnegie. The Carnegie Corporation was created to give away his entire fortune after his death (none was given to family or friends) and they continue to do so today.
- tas08, on 07/10/2008, -1/+4Why "Meet You In Hell" as a title? Given what you've said (and I knew) about Andrew Carnegie? I realize I can be dense sometimes but I'm missing this one.
- reddikilowatt, on 07/11/2008, -0/+2Carnegie's altruism is considered by some to be his attempt to make up for some of the terrible things he did to the steelworkers (google homestead steel strike).
I don't have an opinion either way, he did some good things, some bad. Life was cheap at the time, and he was hardly the worst person in the world, but he was no angel, either. - tas08, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Huh. I'll check it out when I can. Thanks.

- baudbwoy, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3haven't read this yet but I'm digging it because I want to see how many times "slave" comes up, I know it will come up at least once...there is a little slave chapter in ALL our books...black slaves, white slaves, Asian slave its there if you just look. So I am curious to see how accurate a researcher or rather how honest, open and truthful the research is. I read it tomorrow...to tired (1am)

Everyone needs to go watch There Will Be Blood, too, if you haven't. - jamdogg, on 07/10/2008, -0/+5Crassus was killed by his captors by having molten gold poured down his throat. In those days, they didn't do the nicety of beheading him first as the article suggests.
Still, a grim way for a greedy guy to go... - vainbrian, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3"At the end of the Spanish American War, the United States bought the Philippines from Spain for $20 million. Carnegie was appalled at what he perceived to be an imperialist move and personally offered $20 million to the Philippines so it could buy its independence from the US (they didn't take him up on his offer)."
I wonder what our country's history will be if Filipinos took that offer?- blackjack75, on 07/10/2008, -1/+3Holding the Philipinnes was the most blatant example of American imperialism in asia at the time. Without this, the japanese might never have attacked Pearl Harbor. (You have to remember the official explanation for their invasion of the region was a reaction to british, french and american colonies surrounding them).
- eryximachus, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2The American attempts at effectively enacting an oil embargo of Japan - even going so far as to use the Navy - was a major reason for Pearl Harbor.
What existed prior to the attack was already a state of war. Japan was attempting to destroy the complacent US Navy in order to secure oil resources to continue their campaign of removing European imperial powers from Asia.
The war itself was certainly about imperialism, but Pearl Harbor had an immediate strategic objective (which did work in the short term).

- neko6, on 07/10/2008, -0/+11After checking the Wikipedia list - none of the top 100 rich men in history were Jewish! On the other hand, the number of Arabs on the list is astounding - perhaps it were actually the protocols of the elders of Saudi Arabia?
On the other hand, number 101 is Jewish. :P- sneakeykop, on 07/10/2008, -6/+3
ohh their are jews on this list, they are just not listed publicly... - vault, on 07/10/2008, -1/+6yes, it must be a conspiracy, it's not that the bigoted stereotype is inaccurate.
- OfficeSpacing, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1It was a conspiracy, back then, to keep the Jews poor and oppressed. Check the current Wikipedia listing for richest 100 people. A lot are Jewish...

- rontowns25, on 07/10/2008, -1/+0People need to stop worrying about outside factors they can not control. What good does it do to freak out over high gas prices and inflation? No individual like yourself can influence what happens to the market. It's an eternal anomaly that is influenced by a million factors. Worrying does you absolutely no constructive good. Americans must shift their perspectives and think what can I do right now to establish some residual income so that I don't fall victim to outside factors. Get creative and analyze your strengths. If you have a strength and there is a need for your strength in the market place, then you can get compensated appropriately... www.readtheanswer.com/index.php?RTA=web2
- yuletide, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Why are we measuring wealth as a % of the national economy? Isn't a more useful statistic wealth in 1990 dollars (w/inflation) or something like that? Interesting question... Tho I suppose both are valid answers, albeit to subtly different questions.
- yuletide, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Yeah, or we could work on NOT USING AS MUCH GAS...
Supply and demand, people...! Oh, and that whole climate change thing too. Aaand the Middle East. Yeaahh... - Stevethegreat, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1Lies, sure the ancient guys and/or the medieval guys had more money in relevance to their day's wealth than most rich people do today but -actually- their "real wealth" (namely usable energy) was -maybe- even lower than most middle-class people today. We had a surge of wealth starting from the 2nd half of 1800s that made nearly all of us in the western world look like kings compared to ancient or medieval people. I quite agree with the listing of the most recent rich people they would indeed be unfathomably rich even by today's standards maybe not as much as they're represented in the list but still, unfathomably.....
