New British Coin Designs Unveiled
royalmint.com — The royal mint have revealed the new designs for the new British Coinage.
- 1012 diggs
- digg it
- ilovepie1985, on 04/02/2008, -39/+5I hate them, to vague. doesn't say anything about the country today.
- dburka, on 04/02/2008, -4/+28Perhaps they could've printed a postcard on them for you. The design is classic with a modern twist – both the cropped crest and the simplifications in the crest itself. The clarity and simplicity of the design is refreshing.
- TheChihuahua, on 04/02/2008, -0/+38You're right, the Queen should be wearing a burberry cap and electronic tag...
- jimmy17, on 04/02/2008, -0/+6Happy slapping in copper. Nice.
Id like to see time team digg that up in the year 3000.
- jimmy17, on 04/02/2008, -0/+6Happy slapping in copper. Nice.
- Joshuarr, on 04/02/2008, -4/+3Ilovepie1985, take five minutes and do yourself a favor:
http://englishplus.com/grammar/00000258.htm - noahhoward, on 04/02/2008, -1/+9Is a Chav really something you want printed on your national currency?
- Lhuth, on 04/02/2008, -0/+11I'm not really looking for a social commentary on Britain each time I see a pound coin.
- blufireuk, on 04/02/2008, -3/+28I think the new designs are good but I've not heard of this before.
"Widely publicised" my arse. - justrapidshare, on 04/02/2008, -5/+71Love the new designs!
- seeeymour, on 04/02/2008, -2/+14Alright, I will!
- monoa, on 04/03/2008, -0/+3Nice, indeed.
A shame they didn't use the same open process to design the 2012 Olympic logo and we wouldn't have ended up with Lisa Simpson giving a blowjob - which cost £400k.
- jdkludge, on 04/02/2008, -11/+20I like money.
- colin8651, on 04/02/2008, -3/+2"I'm baitin!!"
- theyerb, on 04/02/2008, -1/+4"I like turtles"
- Jayeugene, on 04/02/2008, -0/+9You like money too? we should hang out.
- Idiocracy- nandasunu, on 04/02/2008, -2/+3I love lamp
- schizogony, on 04/02/2008, -22/+5People still use coins?
- pakakapa, on 04/02/2008, -0/+29Yes, with some non-dollar currencies you can actually buy things with coins.
- Joshuarr, on 04/02/2008, -0/+27Yeah, in other countries they're actually worth something.
- Bluemotion, on 04/02/2008, -0/+5err YES.
you trying to say you recently have'nt used coins?- schizogony, on 04/02/2008, -3/+1That's what I'm trying to say, yes.
- joshzam, on 04/02/2008, -0/+22You see that gold coin on the left... that's worth about $2 US.
- racco, on 04/03/2008, -0/+2I use them to throw at people that ask stupid questions
- daEXpress, on 04/02/2008, -27/+2front page after 27 diggs at most?
- Joshuarr, on 04/02/2008, -1/+9got a problem?
- daEXpress, on 04/02/2008, -4/+3no problem. i was just surprised to see that. i guess its just cause im a digg n00b
- daEXpress, on 04/02/2008, -17/+1nvm i guess it was a fluke. its off now
- daEXpress, on 04/02/2008, -7/+2and now its back..
- PyroChan, on 04/02/2008, -15/+1great, even MOAR money can get lost thru the hole in the pants. (pocket that is)
- rjinswand, on 04/02/2008, -0/+4trouser pocket :p
- powatom, on 04/02/2008, -0/+2Solution: Sit up straight.
Problem solved!
- gogoguychampion, on 04/02/2008, -0/+13Going to get one of each of them when they come out and make the shield :)
Coincidence that Scotland is on the 2p...?- spudnic, on 04/02/2008, -1/+12Nah no coincidence, that's how much they contribute to the economy.
Disclaimer: This is a joke.- nandasunu, on 04/02/2008, -4/+4a somewhat accurate joke ;) england ftw
- chrislongridge, on 04/02/2008, -2/+3Yeh, now that you have stolen all our natural resources.
- nandasunu, on 04/02/2008, -4/+4a somewhat accurate joke ;) england ftw
- spudnic, on 04/02/2008, -1/+12Nah no coincidence, that's how much they contribute to the economy.
- PyroChan, on 04/02/2008, -18/+1great, even MOAR money can get lost thru the hole in the pants. (pocket that is)
- chanop, on 04/02/2008, -7/+1Queen Elizabeth, We've failed to stop the revolution
- zimbardo, on 04/02/2008, -11/+3It's about time we scrapped 1p and 2p coins, no one needs a pocket full of brown crap.
- rjinswand, on 04/02/2008, -0/+5the 1p is still useful for things that cost 99p, therefore ensuring that the little arsehole working for you has to enter said product into the till, place money into the till and give change, ensuring that he doesn't pocket the quid...
- JakeyG14, on 04/02/2008, -1/+0Yeah...but then everything would go up by 4p or 3p, I'm poor enough as it is, man!
- techweenie1, on 04/02/2008, -0/+3Save the penny I say...they've been trying to do the same thing in the US for years.
- zimbardo, on 04/02/2008, -2/+2Easy just price everything at £xx.95. Till would still need opening, and we'd save having to carry round ten ton of change.
- mickstephenson, on 04/02/2008, -0/+7Then I couldn't purposefully fumble around for ages while at the front of the queue at the kiosk buying a 20 pack of lamberts in small change, 10 minutes before the lottery draw. Serves the bastards right for hogging the kiosks every wednesday and saturday evenings when I have an addiction to satisfy.
- gudnbluts, on 04/02/2008, -0/+2In New Zealand they've scrapped everything under 5 cents. Prices still have single cents - you still see things for 99c etc. If your total once everything's added up isn't an exact 5c they'll round it up or down to the nearest 5c if you're paying cash, or charge you exactly if you're paying by card.
Seems to work, but it did seem odd at first.- mickstephenson, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1Yeah rounding up at 3 and 8 and keeping your 2c change, no doubt. In a large supermarket, that would easily pay for 2 staff members wages per day.
- gudnbluts, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1Actually (1) my brain's not working today, and they got rid of the 5c piece a year or so ago too, and (2) most shops actually round down on 5c (or under, obviously)
- mickstephenson, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1well as long as technically the consumer is up on average in the long term I could live with that, except for when I want to be a ***** as stated above.
- gudnbluts, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1Actually (1) my brain's not working today, and they got rid of the 5c piece a year or so ago too, and (2) most shops actually round down on 5c (or under, obviously)
- mickstephenson, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1Yeah rounding up at 3 and 8 and keeping your 2c change, no doubt. In a large supermarket, that would easily pay for 2 staff members wages per day.
- Bluemotion, on 04/02/2008, -15/+1Nicest designs yet, dont really know why its on digg tho.
- rjinswand, on 04/02/2008, -0/+13because somebody found it interesting, as did another 82 people?
- Denelson83, on 04/02/2008, -4/+7Site down.
- beansy, on 04/02/2008, -13/+2Beats having some random broad's head on your coin
- gogoguychampion, on 04/02/2008, -0/+10The queens head is on the OTHER side...
- estacado, on 04/02/2008, -4/+1They should crop that side too.
- gogoguychampion, on 04/02/2008, -0/+10The queens head is on the OTHER side...
- rjinswand, on 04/02/2008, -2/+5i quite like them... so are they still going to have liz's head or are anticipating something here?
- drewX2, on 04/02/2008, -9/+1Did you even look at them? Why would you make a comment about her head. They form a shield.
- NeilVickers, on 04/02/2008, -1/+12Any guesses as to what might be on the other side of the coins?
- porkdanish, on 04/02/2008, -0/+7Don't have an embolism drewX2 (if that IS your real name).
From the BBC article:"The front of the coins will continue to bear the same portrait of the Queen, by Ian Rank-Broadley, which has been on coins since 1998. "- rjinswand, on 04/02/2008, -0/+3lol, I spotted it elsewhere but thanks for bwing a helpful and polite digg user :p
and i bet it's probably just a moniker... the devious thing! not a good honest name like porkdanish or stiglett
- rjinswand, on 04/02/2008, -0/+3lol, I spotted it elsewhere but thanks for bwing a helpful and polite digg user :p
- drewX2, on 04/02/2008, -9/+1Did you even look at them? Why would you make a comment about her head. They form a shield.
- Paranoidmarvin, on 04/02/2008, -19/+1Another UK story today?
Wow, this must be a special day on Digg- cjschmidt, on 04/02/2008, -0/+4Haven't you heard? Brit is the new black.
- techweenie1, on 04/02/2008, -2/+1I, Having a raging case of anglophilia, have always been ahead of the curve...that said I'm off to London for the week, cheerio!
- JakeyG14, on 04/02/2008, -1/+12We get plenty of exciting stories here in the UK! Why just today the sun was out and a few people even had t-shirts on.
- rd3k, on 04/02/2008, -0/+4Not all of Digg is American you know!
- cjschmidt, on 04/02/2008, -0/+4Haven't you heard? Brit is the new black.
- cgbspender, on 04/02/2008, -21/+13Where is the coin with the cctv camera?
- powatom, on 04/02/2008, -3/+3Shhhh, if nobody notices them it's not a problem!
- yankeefan8755, on 04/02/2008, -1/+23Money that has value?!?!?! What is this nonsense. *feeds penny to cat*
- Dr3w, on 04/03/2008, -0/+2For some reason, the thought of feeding pennies to cats just made me bust a gut
- Erik1, on 04/03/2008, -0/+2It made the cat bust a gut too.
- Dr3w, on 04/03/2008, -0/+2For some reason, the thought of feeding pennies to cats just made me bust a gut
- drewX2, on 04/02/2008, -6/+2These coins are amazing. We need some better ones in the U.S. Instead of whack "state" edition quarters.
- FoxMcCloud1, on 04/02/2008, -10/+4I was hoping to see the pound coin get a little thinner and lighter or turn into a paper note. Carrying pound coins is stupid as hell they are heavy as an elephant. The end.
- Goblin, on 04/02/2008, -0/+6What are you going to put in a shopping trolley?
- Spinnaay, on 04/02/2008, -0/+3Owned
- nandasunu, on 04/02/2008, -0/+2indeed.
- chedabob, on 04/02/2008, -1/+2One of those silver coins with a logo on them that you get at job fairs.
- Spinnaay, on 04/02/2008, -0/+3Owned
- powatom, on 04/02/2008, -0/+5I still kinda feel rich when I hold a pound coin, like I used to with the old (big) 10p coins. I wish I was a kid again :(
- TCKC2C, on 04/02/2008, -0/+0I agree, if only because it makes it much cheaper to appropriately tip strippers.
- Goblin, on 04/02/2008, -0/+6What are you going to put in a shopping trolley?
- mtdna, on 04/02/2008, -1/+14I like the heptagon one so much I'm changing my rapper-name to 50p! ...but you can call me fitty!
- techweenie1, on 04/02/2008, -1/+2fo realz the world well needs a 50p
- mdaize, on 04/02/2008, -6/+3bahaha... making money, and the royal mint can barely use it to afford a site that can survive the digg effect
- Goblin, on 04/02/2008, -0/+7Well, let's be fair. The Royal Mint is hardly a high traffic destination site. Probably got more hits today than the whole of last year.
- Buzzby, on 04/02/2008, -0/+24Digg slowed down Royal Mint, lol
BBC Link and a photo of them
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7326491.stm- wyrdness, on 04/02/2008, -0/+2The picture on the Royal Mint site looks so much better than the BBC one.
- wyrdness, on 04/02/2008, -0/+2The picture on the Royal Mint site looks so much better than the BBC one.
- mickhead, on 04/02/2008, -0/+28Where is the £2 coin?
- Buzzby, on 04/02/2008, -1/+2Its staying the same, apparently.
- TheLD, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1£2 coins are always changing anyway
- OrlyonokEaglet, on 04/02/2008, -4/+3I expected Euro coins... must be all all the jokes on digg lately.
- koft, on 04/02/2008, -28/+1Ugly as *****, and why do we care about coins from Britain? Toss pots, smoking ***** and spotted dick here Digg comes!
- rd3k, on 04/02/2008, -2/+1Ouch sterotypes!
- Hefelumpman, on 04/02/2008, -0/+4you fail.
- Almightymole, on 04/02/2008, -0/+6Hey, I resemble those remarks, good sir.
For the record, your a bloody wanker.
- LovelyNeko, on 04/02/2008, -15/+1McCain came to my house. I said: Why did you came? McCain said: I'm came here to buy a cane and a kain. I said: Dude, I don't sell canes and kains. McCain said: I have coins, you have canes and kains.I said: GTFO.
.......

.........................o.ô ................. *logout* - anthonymac, on 04/02/2008, -1/+3I think they need to use some of this newly minted coinage to buy themselves a new server whilst they're at it :p
- rjinswand, on 04/02/2008, -0/+2http://www.royalmint.com/newdesigns/UKF8BPS_m.aspx they will have the queens face on them...
- davewashere, on 04/02/2008, -2/+2Meh, I'd hit it
- kingofinternet, on 04/02/2008, -2/+7is jeremy clarkson's head on it?
- techweenie1, on 04/02/2008, -2/+1nope but limited editions will feature the heads of Bex and Posh, Pete Doherty, Vicky Pollard, and Amy Whinehouse.
- wyrdness, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1No, despite Clarksons striking resemblance to King Edward.
The potato, that is, not the monarch.
- sagat, on 04/02/2008, -10/+2They will all look great on the back of the Euro.
- Spinnaay, on 04/02/2008, -5/+0UK should just give up already and go Euro!
- TheLD, on 04/02/2008, -1/+2UK is not going Euro. It would ***** up our economy too much
- PueSi, on 04/02/2008, -0/+2http://bayimg.com/DaJObaAbE
link to the image from the article, the site is mighty slow.- Buzzby, on 04/02/2008, -1/+1Ha, we did the exact same thing. With the same hosting! lol
- PueSi, on 04/02/2008, -0/+2twilight zone >_>
- Buzzby, on 04/02/2008, -1/+7Coins on their own
http://image.bayimg.com/dajocaabe.jpg- UberNick, on 04/02/2008, -0/+4Coins smushed together
http://bayimg.com/DAJOJaAbE- chedabob, on 04/02/2008, -0/+2That'd be cool if the coins weren't all different shapes and sizes.
- UberNick, on 04/02/2008, -0/+4Coins smushed together
- synthpop, on 04/02/2008, -7/+1I heard patrons of UK strip clubs use coins and not bills. is this true?
- Goblin, on 04/02/2008, -1/+6Depends if it's a strip club in London or Liverpool.
- nandasunu, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1disturbingly accurate...
- rjinswand, on 04/02/2008, -0/+2insert coin can be taken a bit too seriously sometimes :p
- Cowboy1015, on 04/02/2008, -3/+1Look at this coin getting inserted http://youtube.com/watch?what=stripper_royal_mint& ...
- Cowboy1015, on 04/02/2008, -3/+1Is this popular in UK strip clubs? http://youtube.com/watch?what=stripper_royal_mint& ...
- Goblin, on 04/02/2008, -1/+6Depends if it's a strip club in London or Liverpool.
- doomeyes, on 04/02/2008, -5/+0I guess I'm in the minority here, but I think that design is downright ugly. They look like misprints.
- lewscroo, on 04/02/2008, -0/+2Digg broke the mint. No more pictures. Anyone got a mirror of the new coins?
- kylehjohnson, on 04/02/2008, -10/+0its a farce, blatent royalism that is being forced on the population. Looks like they'd made a conscious effort to avoid reflect a varied cultural heritage in the new coin designs. Now we get emblems of that unrepresentative, removed and out-of-touch family on both sides of our coins!
- powatom, on 04/02/2008, -0/+7It's called the ROYAL Mint for a reason.
Besides, it's not like you're going to be wandering around gawping at your coins all day. The only time you're going to see them is when you're buying something, so I don't really see it as a problem.- kylehjohnson, on 04/02/2008, -3/+0Yes, well, the 'Royal' mint is an anachronism, just the like monarchy is in any political process or institution. And yes, it's one of those things that people look at EVERYDAY, as well as millions of visitors to our country.
- chedabob, on 04/02/2008, -0/+4Oh my god, go away and read "bah bah pink sheep" you politically correct *****.
- kylehjohnson, on 04/02/2008, -3/+0Yes, well, the 'Royal' mint is an anachronism, just the like monarchy is in any political process or institution. And yes, it's one of those things that people look at EVERYDAY, as well as millions of visitors to our country.
- powatom, on 04/02/2008, -0/+7It's called the ROYAL Mint for a reason.

- ribo, on 04/02/2008, -0/+2they all look like off-strucks, they'll be worth millions!
- Spinnaay, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1Shieldtastic
- estacado, on 04/02/2008, -0/+16Where's the guy that made the Olympic logo when we need him.
- nandasunu, on 04/02/2008, -0/+3don't give them any ideas...
- danielce, on 04/02/2008, -0/+2page is slow: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2215/2383555142_5a9 ...
- binorgog, on 08/07/2008, -1/+11I love the £2 coin. As an American who visit often, feel a bit richer with a few of those around. Heck in 2008 that coin can buy a condo in Denver.
- xrEE, on 04/02/2008, -0/+4Very nice designs, a bio from the designers site: http://mattdent.com/info_about.asp
- TheAuditor, on 04/02/2008, -8/+3Typical britain - start a competition for someone to design the new set of coins. Same with the 2012 olympic logo - they all look terrible. When will we learn - the people who judge these competitions are about as artistically apprecietive as a blind duck.
- error2k2, on 04/02/2008, -0/+5There was no competition for the 2012 logo, it would have been great if there was, would have been 100 times better than the current crap.
- daxsymbiont, on 04/02/2008, -0/+3keep rejecting the euro. more cheap pound for euros.
- megaton, on 04/02/2008, -0/+5Someone at the mint got happy with the "crop" tool.
- TheDiceMan, on 04/02/2008, -1/+4Double Ewe Tee EFF?!
Got a spare SIX GRAND for the 'Platinum Collection'? Basically £1.88 in platinum - in a box... painted gold
:s
http://www.royalmint.com/newdesigns/thePlatinumCol ... - BetterOffEd, on 04/02/2008, -0/+2Wow. No wonder why they're worth more than our money.
