"Some analysts even argue that men are less suited than women to the knowledge economy, which rewards supposedly female traits such as sensitivity, intuition, and a willingness to collaborate."
So it's come full circle.
1950s PSA voice: The average male worker is an interesting and relatively unknown entitiy. Extensive science-like research has proven that males are inferior, but as a necessary staple in the workplace, we must be prepared to deal with them. When you see a male in the workplace, be sure to remind him how intuitive his comments are, especially when they're not. The male is an uncooperative species, so when you approach him, do so slowly and with a pitchfork.- Conwaysb0718, on 05/13/2008, -0/+9I find your comment especially intuitive.

- mike17032, on 05/13/2008, -7/+30That line is pure *****. Wanna see a whole lot of in fighting and bickering? Toss a few women into an office and sit back and watch. That whole "women collaborate better" line is the biggest sack of horse ***** women have ever sold to the world.
Remember in high school how the women cliques always went around feeding on gossip and back stabbing and in fighting? Ya they never really grow out of that *****. The guys on the other hand would throw down and then get back to work.- LokitheComplex, on 05/13/2008, -1/+3Karl Marx thought that women didn't need to become communists because they were already very communal. I'm not a rabid anti communist. I just think it doesn't work because its based upon a false understanding of humanity as demonstrated by this detail which ties in with the sentiment here.

marriage is empty of win and full of lose.
there is nothing for the man and the woman stands to gain everything.
the only thing pushing you towards marriage is your girlfriend or your parents.
there are piles of shattered and broken men that have been chewed up and spit out by the marriage beast.
venture into marriage at your peril.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ii-dVIYBVZ8- Conwaysb0718, on 05/13/2008, -4/+15actually, I like being married. my wife and I work well as a team and actually have a partnership in which we both give and take equally.
- eryximachus, on 05/13/2008, -1/+4You are in the distinct minority. I am hopeful myself though, and am actually engaged at the moment.
Still though, everyone I know who has been married longer than five years has gotten divorced. - mustafya, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1Me and my wife work together well. We both make the same money. We share responsibilities. Basically we are like best friends and roommates. The reason so many people are miserable in marriage is they get married literally for the wrong reasons or without enough knowledge of the other person. You honestly hardly even know someone even after a year. And you seriously need to consider if you will be happy spending that much time with them for the rest of your life.
- Pstmann, on 05/13/2008, -1/+4Good for you, hope it lasts.
Odds are it won't and odds are again that she will be the one to initiate the separation and divorce. Then ( in the US ) she will have the right to half of the assets, ( if children ) child support, and (if you were nice enough to let her stay home and jack-off) alimony.
Getting married in the US is the single worst financial decision a man can make. They should have it at the top of the lists at financial seminars of what mistakes not to make.
- eryximachus, on 05/13/2008, -1/+4You are in the distinct minority. I am hopeful myself though, and am actually engaged at the moment.

We have yet to see the real impact of high gas prices and the housing market collapse, and all indicators are pointing towards recession. We just need the current quarter to end for the definition to be met, or are you expecting some economic boom to occur within the next month?

"Among digg users, the trend is reversed; this statistic is attributed to the fact that not one digg user is in either construction or manufacturing." - JayTee44, on 05/13/2008, -13/+50It doesn't matter how far ahead women go in this culture, it's still all about them, and somehow it's all men's fault. Women will still be portrayed as the victims, deserving of special protections.
- kumarei, on 05/13/2008, -13/+12Whine again when women have comparable salaries to men.
- dracflamloc, on 05/13/2008, -4/+3They'll have the salaries when they start demanding them. Then men will undercut their salaries. That excuse is void.
- neko6, on 05/13/2008, -2/+10Studies show that if you calibrate (some unintuitive) other factors (experience, education, height, number of work hours per day, etc.), women and men earn on average the same.
- mike17032, on 05/13/2008, -5/+7Sure, as soon as they start pulling their weight.
Taking time off to crap out a baby isnt going to impact average salary and advancement? - B1663r, on 05/13/2008, -2/+10Wow, women employees cost less??? Why would any company interested in its bottom line hire men if women cost less to employ?
There have been plenty of studies on the matter, and women make the same as men do. Their lifetime income is less because women usually leave the workforce to have children, or they choose career paths that give them the option to have children. Among college educated unmarried and childless women, women actually make $1.01 for every $1.00 that men make.
You can argue with the biological facts all you want. But women ~like~ having children, and that causes them to choose career paths that make less money over their lifetime.
If you want to talk about unfairness in the workplace, lets talk about workplace deaths. Who do you suppose does the more dangerous jobs, men or women? - thailand1972, on 05/13/2008, -0/+10The myth than women are paid less than men is based on the blunt analysis of wages IN TOTALITY added up, then divided by number of men/women. Men AS A WHOLE earn more than women. This doesn't mean that men earn more than women in the exact same jobs - it means men put in more hours (women make up majority of part-time staff), do riskier work that pays more, and are more "careerist" than women (maybe that's cultural, but it's not sexist).
Oh, and there are anti-discrimination laws in the workplace to protect both women AND men from sexism and being treated unfairly just because of their sex. - Pake, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2Women are generally paid more today than men are for doing the same job. Simply put, employers can't pay them less or the same, otherwise they'll get sued for discrimination. They can't fire them or else they'll get sued for discrimination and I'm being 100% serious. Companies are scared of firing women, turning down women for jobs, and paying them lower wages for just starting, so they pay them as much as people who have worked at the company longer.
- jaythree9, on 05/13/2008, -10/+5Wah wah wah. You can bitch about it when there are more women than men getting paid higher salaries, are rapists, are pedophiles, are domestic abusers. Then you may have cause to complain. And no, asking you to pick up your dirty underwear is not domestic abuse no matter how much you may want to feel persecuted by it.
- faskill, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5What the hell are you talking about jaythree? Are you attempting to insult men?
- thailand1972, on 05/13/2008, -0/+7Who's making the "wah wah wah" noise now? You seem to be equating victimhood with being able to do anything you please. And as far as your claims go, women make up the majority of domestic child abusers and also are between 45-55% of domestic violence initiators (http://www.dv-stats.org/) depending on which study you read. It doesn't really matter anyway - my point is that a victim is a victim regardless of their gender, and a perpetrator is a perpetrator regardless of their gender, and being a victim doesn't mean you lose your responsibilities.
- thailand1972, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1edit : http://www.dvstats.org/

- doktorrocket, on 05/13/2008, -4/+35"Meanwhile women are graduating from college at higher rates than men."
Clearly we need some new male-focused programs at our nations' colleges to encourage gender diversity. The current "College: Four years of beer and boobs" awareness campaign isn't working.- truthhammer, on 05/13/2008, -3/+8Yes, we must create a task force with federal funding, plus order a congressional investigation to figure out why more men aren't graduating college. This is an outrage, men must be giv...wait...men? I misunderstood, never mind. /sarcasm off.
- JargonScott, on 05/13/2008, -1/+4That's because there are many cheaper and easier avenues to beer and boobs outside of college. Strip clubs don't require a dissertation. :)
- cronian, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Supposedly, college classes were changed to put less ephasis on final exams. For some reason, women do better on long-term projects than final exams. As I understnad it, this has made things harder for men.
- WiredLain, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1It's that lone wolf attitude us men have. Really messes with group projects.

- lazerus9, on 05/13/2008, -3/+20It is designed to destroy our society. It is a strategy that has been used before in other places. Why do you think comprehensive history is no longer taught, except in the most elitist schools? It is part of a "dumbing down" agenda. Napoleon did not want the lower classes educated at all!, except to the extent they could be used to provide basic services to the ruling class. Why do you think they say that the US is moving toward a service economy? Would you like fries with your burger lady?

You might be giving the "gubmint" too much credit; it only accidentally ***** up our nation when it took over schooling our children.
- Sinnic, on 05/13/2008, -1/+7But each of those subjects have their own history. 'History' as a subject isn't relegated to World War II trivia and persual of ancient manuscripts - it's a necessary part of defining and describing the reasoning and content behind almost everything we do. - SpykerSpeed, on 05/13/2008, -3/+1History is irrelevant except as a means to propagandize. The future is all that matters.
- Sinnic, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2That's a scary attitude - rush headlong into a future without being able, or even willing, to identify the history of where you came from? Why your life has been shaped as it has by contemporary powers - how they came to be - what their plans were, and how they've changed over time and in the face of individual and collective agencies?
Sounds either trollish or profoundly ignorant of the world we live in.
- lazerus9, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Your wrong! This was no accident! You are obviously a product of the Public School system. And I am not saying that as an insult to you, but you have just proved my point by your lack of historical perspective and your dismissal of history as unimportant! It is your lack of historical knowledge that enables these elitist creatures to perpetrate the same scams over and over again growing more sinister as technology has advanced.- SpykerSpeed, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Are you kidding me? Or the reason why men are not graduating from college as much?- eimlauqons, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1That and all the jobs men have to do to keep the world going, like mining, logging, construction etc. If most men were going to college the modern world would stop.

- oldgal, on 05/13/2008, -2/+10If you are good at what you do and feel you are not being paid fairly, go find another job. All of us (men and women) know someone who is unjustifiably making more money than us. We rarely, however, make mention of someone who is unjustifiably making less than us.
- Jaablaze, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4I totally agree. At my last job I was definitely getting underpaid. And the on top of that, they cut the bonus plan. Got fed up, found a new job, and now I'm happy :)
- robthom, on 05/13/2008, -6/+4"Why Men Are Hurting More Than Women"
Because most white men (and white people in general) are sado-masochistic gluttons for abuse and they're dragging everybody else into it.
Its like white guilt, but from women to men. - Jaablaze, on 05/13/2008, -0/+10Well, from what I can see, the reason why women get paid less than men is because fields that usually give higher pay really aren't in the general interest of women. I am in the IT industry so I can only speak to that effect, but I have seen only 3 women ever in the companies that I worked for come in for an interview. Not saying that they couldn't do it, but I know no women personally that display the amount of interest in computers and technology that I do.
- gryphon50, on 05/13/2008, -2/+3it's just as well they don't come in for an interview, the amount of sexual harassment they would have to face would be astronomical because it's such a male-dominated field.
- scamper22, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1yeah okay. I've been in several companies, the men in IT/engineering are the last ones to sexually harass women.
heck, I'm sure the few women in the field feel a bit under-harassed :P
They miss those flirty compliments they normally get from normal guys.
- scamper22, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1yeah okay. I've been in several companies, the men in IT/engineering are the last ones to sexually harass women.
- Jaablaze, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2in all honesty, in general women would face more sexual harassment than men in any field...unless you work at curves or some other place thats dominated by women. Even in a place that lets say was split 50/50, your always gonna have that aggressive guy or borderline ***** that thinks no means yes. Bottom line, there are rules in place to take care of this. I have seen people fired over sexual harassments. All a woman would have to do is follow SOP and tell the appropriate person.
- flashingcurser, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2Women get paid less because most take 5-10 years out of their lives to raise children. In the prime of their lives when they are still ambitious. Often at an age when higher education would still have been an option. I believe that equal experience/education to equal experience/education pay between the sexes is pretty damned close.
- scamper22, on 05/13/2008, -1/+0you forget equal skill. Something almost impossible to measure by statistics.

education = boom industry according to the article.
government jobs = booming according to the article.
health care/social work = booming
Go where the money is my good man. If the government is paying for these things, dance to their tune. No point fighting it.- BradMW, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1No, I have a job that pays.
- Sumtin2Say, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1They are beginning to dominate graduate programs as well. My wife is getting her PharmD. About 85% of her class is female. Her salary will be almost three times mine. Another female friend is working on her second masters. She is being promoted from a college academic advisor to assistant dean this week. Maybe anecdotal, but every female I know is ambitious and successful. The males, not so much.

(Sorry. I'm only sexist when it's funny.) - thailand1972, on 05/13/2008, -1/+7Does an employer REALLY think "oh she's a woman, I'll pay her 25% less than Steve who does the same job". If he thought that, why doesn't he also get rid of Steve, and hire another woman to replace him, saving even more money? And anyway, just WHY would an employer think like that?
- spaceddaisy, on 05/13/2008, -1/+4They will actually think, well she would be great for the job, but I'm sure that she'll take a lot of time of to A. take care of the children or B. Take time off to -have- children, so might as well pay her less, since she'll be in less than 'Steve'.
As a woman no matter how I can argue that I do not want children or that I have my family taken care of that I don't need to take time off for anything, they'll still think about it and enter it into calculations.- thailand1972, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1If an employer thought like that, they'd actually not even bother to hire the woman. That kind of employer is likely to think of the hassle factor too - employing someone else while the woman is off on maternity leave. Anyway, if YOU are being paid less because employers THINK you're going to be pregnant, they are breaking the law and you have a very strong case for discrimination. I just don't believe it exists on such a massive scale that it ends up that almost all women are paid less than men in like-for-like jobs - just another feminist myth to peddle the eternal victim status.
- scamper22, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2what will really blow your mind is why you ask
why don't more women open their own business.- thailand1972, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1You'd think they would given all the supposed discrimination they face. Yet in the UK, two thirds of self-employed people are men.

- scamper22, on 05/13/2008, -1/+2This has less to do with 'intelligence' and everything to do with demand.
Notice the 'booming' industries: health care, education, and government.
The so-called 'public sector economy'. Yes, laugh it at, but that's what they call it. They tax you and make sure this part of the economy is healthy.
How much of that is paid for by the tax payer? That is to say, it is a guaranteed economy. The government mandates that part of the economy. If you don't want to fix up your house or buy a car, you're free to put it off...even at your own peril. Education and health care are both heavily subsidized by government. They're also completely service oriented jobs, which means they cannot easily shift production overseas.
So the results are fairly predictable. Women get well-paying guaranteed stable jobs.
Men still take the risks/pressure/skills to get the high paying jobs. Other men not able to do that sink to the bottom of the ship without guaranteed jobs from government.
Others have mentioned that men are of varied intelligence (some very smart, other very dum)
The solution: Poor men, get into government work. Alternatively, enjoy being a stay at home dad. I know I wouldn't mind.- Sumtin2Say, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0Of course it is only anecdotal for me to offer my thoughts based on my own experience, but... I've seen that women like jobs where they feel like they are helping people. The three closest women to me are in education, healthcare, and the third just finished her undergrad and is in the peace corps. Just wanted to clarify that you weren't trying to say that they are purposely taking the easy safe route. Can't say they didn't work hard to get where they are. The one in education is finishing her second masters and the one in health care is finishing her PharmD.
- scamper22, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0This is less a critique of women as it is public policy.
People are going to choose their jobs. If the women in your life are choosing education/health care wonderful.
The question is from a public policy perspective. We certainly have much more of an emphasis on health and education today in terms of monetary spending than we did a long time ago. So if you think of it, all that public money flows in that direction. Healthcare and education are thought of as a 'right'. You cannot just toss them aside as you would a new car purchase.
Chances are they would have chosen the same career even if it paid less (and it would pay significantly less were not subsidized by the government).
As to the 'easy route'. Depends what you mean by the easy route. We all take the easy route. I'm taking the easy route right now working for a big company instead of going out there starting me own business. Only men are that stupid to have that level of risk. Which is why the tend to up at those higher end positions instead of women. Hey, I'm a man, and I don't want to make that level of risk/work either. I certainly don't look at the wage gap as being wrong :)
Looking to the future, I'll surely be telling my kids to get a job that this article would say is 'womanly' in terms of health care / education.

Save your petty whining for the dolts. Digg may be a rowdy bunch, but we're not stupid. I hope.
- WiredLain, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2You wouldn't know that by all the misogynistic comments for this article.
- Shots, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1The rich spend money as well, and AS THE ARTICLE SAYS, they seem to be spending it more on healthcare and education, as opposed to manufacturing and construction.
- entiendo, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Tech jobs are the easiest to cut, move or consolidate, and they tend to be the most heavily male industries so this shouldn't surprise us too much. What is more interesting, imho, is how it's going to effect the dynamics of dual-income families and maybe the whole culture.
- fraziebr, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0I agree with this observation considering the overall effect that dual income families has had on the American culture as a whole.
- isparadiselost, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0Actually, it's quite simple. Men have allowed themselves to be emasculated and we have allowed the court system to view us as ATM machines and sperm donors. Having a Y chromosome these days puts us in a bad spot.
Men are so worried about being politically correct and towing the feminist lines that they kowtow to be seen as "tolerant" and whatever the other PC terms of the day are.
This country is gone. Men cower in fear and live like indentured servants to the family courts and to simple statistics such as this. No wonder women are starting to see men as nothing more than the aforementioned items I indicated. If men no longer have balls, why should females care? - username484767, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1lol
