If you believe world financial markets (dollar based markets in particular) are going to get worse before they get better, gold and other hedges against monetary turmoil still look attractive. Do some research, find instances in the past where the economic situation was similar (hint: check out the mid-70's through early 80s period in the US, and Japan's bubble collapse in the early 90s) and figure out what worked then.
