US Energy / NICOR Gas Scam - What They Really Want (and Why
whatswrongaroundus.blogspot.co… — US Energy knocks on your door and claims to be from NICOR--they say they want to find out if you're eligible to avoid a rate increase, but really what they want to do is switch your service. It's fraud, but NICOR opts to stay neutral while their customers are victimized. Why?

- Kylde, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2exactly the same tactic is used here in the UK, many of neighbours have fallen for the switch
- gnomey, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2This really irritates me. I really feel that this is such a violation of the law, not to mention an invasion of privacy. The fact that NICOR won't do anything about it makes them just as bad.
- mmc2007, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1You would think that NICOR would have a vested business interest in not having the competition pretend to be them in order to solicit away their customers. So the comment that they have to remain neutral sounds pretty odd to me. Which makes me think one of two things has to be at work here ... either there is some sort of rule/regulation/policy requiring them to remain neutral while another company fraudulently steals their customers (sounds unlikely to me) or they are somehow in cohoots with US Energy. Seems to me that someone should contact the Better Business Bureau or whoever and track down where this requirement comes from for NICOR to remain neutral. Might shed some interesting results.
- Member148, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1This is why I have No Solicitors on my residence. They see the sign and leave. The quicksand pit I have in front of my steps doesn't hurt either. I tell them I will pull them out if they leave immediately afterward. :-)
- CaponeX, on 01/31/2008, -0/+1Today I had not one, but three different guys ring the bell from this U.S. Energy. All three claimed to be from U.S. Energy and People's Energy. By the third time I was plenty irritated and called the 311 police line.
Oh, and don't think a "No Solicitation" sign stops them. I have one in English/Spanish & Polish (the three predominant languages in my part of Chicago), and they just brazenly rang the bell and pounded on the window anyway.
