George Carlin has died

etonline.com — Legendary comedian George Carlin passed away Sunday night at the age of 71. He will be missed, but never forgotten.

        Ledger died young, early, and unexpectedly at the prime of his youth and career. Carlin lived to 71 and had success until the day he died. Many would consider Carlin's death natural and Ledger's a great tragedy. Carlin lived what many identify and aspire to have as a complete life.
        In a way you might say we are all happy for the end of Carlin's life as he left us with an overall good mark on earth. Carlin in his life probably accomplished everything he needed to, if not surpassing his life goals. It is sad to see Carlin go, but it was great to have him along.
        Ledger's death was shortened and it's a waste of the potential he once had in life, thus a tragedy.

      I remember him from Bill and Ted, Dogma etc. but in the past few years after that I watched his HBO specials....a lot of my mates weren't into it, (there was something about terororists that they thought was unamerican !?!?) but I loved his stand up stuff, and since I've got them going all the way back tothe 70-80s his humour was awesome all the way to the end.

It's not tragic, it's a part of life. Now if he died in his 20's, then be sad. But if he died old and with a long and fulfilling life behind him, be happy. His life ended with much done. I find it truly insulting to the person when they die in their 70's or 80's, or above, and people act like it's a tragedy. It's an insult to all they've done. It's like people think they'll live forever.

Neither should be held to an unequal level of one another, which is why I hate lists that try to rate comedians, like Comedy Central did a few years back. There's a lot of great comics on the road today, a lot of whom cite both these men as influencing them to get into comedy.

        It's a shame to see George go, but he's influenced so many people, and made so many people think. Carlin, and Pryor for that matter, will be sorely missed by all that like to truly laugh.

First consider that those who subscribe to any traditional version of "heaven" and "hell" would not allow for Carlin's admission to the former, and you'll uncover the first clue that the tributary was employing a figurative, allusive version of heaven rather than the one you gleaned..

          Metaphoric speech comes in many flavors, the one in question here falls under what I'd categorize equally allegoric and conceptual. Its allegory resides in its vision of Carlin, his journey completed, having come to relax in a manner which he might have chosen. for himself Conceptual elements assert a kind of immortality, whereby his spirit lives on in the rebellion and questioning of authority it inspired and continues to inspire. As long as it does continue, Carlin is not fully dead.

          It is the zealotry of the current breed of Atheism that I find alarming for it's tendency to be as literal as is the Creationist reading Genesis. Much of our literary history is told via religion. To preclude its insertion is to strip the depth that literary erudition and appreciation offers. One does not, after all, need be a Christian to gain from Dante's' Divine Comedy, nor does one need be pagan to reap rewards from Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. Zealotry under any banner remains zealotry, and therefore,oppressive.

          As a central focus in the lives of authors of great art - you are poignantly correct - religion has a place in the communication of cultural mores and is a potent referential allegorical source. However, choosing to utilize a religious reference during a supposed tribute to one of the world's foremost anti-religious figures is not only a poor way to convey meaning, it is somewhat offensive given the sensitive nature of the topic.

          I agree I was being hyper-sensitive, I realize the statement made was well-intentioned and i probably should have left it alone but to equate my paragraph with the horrors of religious zealotry is unfair.

I grew up in a religious family, and he helped me break free of the brainwashing I was subjected to in church. I watched him as a kid and was blown away by how intelligent, funny, and reasoned his logic was. He definitely helped me form my views today regarding religion. After watching him once, I boldly told my parents I hated church at the age of 14. I was of course punished for that and watching Carlin, but I continued to watch and open my mind to new possibilities. He and others like him saved me from a lifetime of ignorance.

      I will miss him, may Joe Pesci shine his grace upon him.
