For years I asked God to do something about my noisy neighbor with the barking dog. Joe Pesci straightened that *****-sucker out with one visit."

- Dotcommer, on 06/23/2008, -1/+26The Seven Words:
- ddfall, on 06/23/2008, -4/+34Sad indeed. Is it bad if the first thing I think of him in is the Jay & Silent Bob Strike back movie as the hitch hiker who goes down on the trucker to get a ride?
- mdcraig62, on 06/23/2008, -0/+30I prefer "Cardinal Glick", myself...
- kinggimped, on 06/23/2008, -8/+5The sad thing is you remember him for a cameo and not his incredible repertoire of stand-up shows.
But yeah, I still chuckled at the hitch hiker bit, though it'll always be a little sad for me now :(
RIP George! - Cerebral, on 06/23/2008, -0/+14Well... my first thought is of him playing Rufus in Bill & Ted movies. Man I really love those movies.
- eShinn, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1I first thought of his stand-up routines and his Hippy Dippy weather man report. But first got introduced by watching Bill -n- Ted's.

RIP George - StormTroopr, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1It's from the hitchhiker scene. There was a misunderstanding involving the good book and a nun played by Carrie Fisher.

- crash331, on 06/23/2008, -0/+14I think of Shining Time Station.
- BoneheadFarker, on 06/23/2008, -0/+8I watched him as a kid. You have no idea the shock I had hearing the 7 words you can't say on TV for the first time...
- SuminderJi, on 06/23/2008, -0/+8Thats how I had to explain him to my GF.
I grew up watching him, and I grew old respecting him.
- pe5t1lence, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1No one else saw the one episode of the George Carlin show?
- smashingmonkey, on 06/23/2008, -2/+35I'm a little awed by the passing of this master. I'll always be grateful for the ways he bent my mind and made me laugh. RIP
- f3l1x, on 06/23/2008, -0/+3Agreed, my son watches "Thomas The Tank Engine" (narrated at times by Carlin) and I've always expected to hear an uncensored rant in the middle of the show. Sadly there never was, but he even did a damn good job at simple narration. Such a powerful voice and mind. We need more like him... STAT!
- rpgguy1o1, on 06/23/2008, -3/+51way too sad
RIP mr conductor...- toytoyota, on 06/23/2008, -0/+11I just realized he was the conductor on that show. So small but so much authority with that whistle. Now I like him even more.

- gaapgod, on 06/23/2008, -3/+23I'm a modern man,
digital and smoke-free;
a man for the millennium.
A diversified, multi-cultural,
post-modern deconstructionist;
politically, anatomically and ecologically incorrect.
I've been uplinked and downloaded,
I've been inputted and outsourced.
I know the upside of downsizing,
I know the downside of upgrading.
I'm a high-tech low-life.
A cutting-edge, state-of-the-art,
bi-coastal multi-tasker,
and I can give you a gigabyte in a nanosecond.
I'm new-wave, but I'm old-school;
and my inner child is outward-bound.
I'm a hot-wired, heat-seeking,
warm-hearted cool customer;
voice-activated and bio-degradable.
I interface with my database;
my database is in cyberspace;
so I'm interactive, I'm hyperactive,
and from time to time I'm radioactive.
Behind the eight ball, ahead of the curve,
ridin' the wave, dodgin' the bullet,
pushin' the envelope.
I'm on point, on task, on message,
and off drugs.
I've got no need for coke and speed;
I've got no urge to binge and purge.
I'm in the moment, on the edge,
over the top, but under the radar.
A high-concept, low-profile,
medium-range ballistic missionary.
A street-wise smart bomb.
A top-gun bottom-feeder.
I wear power ties, I tell power lies,
I take power naps, I run victory laps.
I'm a totally ongoing, big-foot, slam-dunk
rainmaker with a pro-active outreach.
A raging workaholic, a working rageaholic;
out of rehab and in denial.
I've got a personal trainer,
a personal shopper,
a personal assistant,
and a personal agenda.
You can't shut me up;
you can't dumb me down.
'Cause I'm tireless, and I'm wireless.
I'm an alpha-male on beta-blockers.
I'm a non-believer,
I'm an over-achiever;
Laid-back and fashion-forward.
Up-front, down-home;
low-rent, high-maintenance.
I'm super-sized, long-lasting,
high-definition, fast-acting,
oven-ready and built to last.
A hands-on, footloose, knee-jerk head case;
prematurely post-traumatic,
and I have a love child who sends me hate-mail.
But I'm feeling, I'm caring,
I'm healing, I'm sharing.
A supportive, bonding, nurturing
primary-care giver.
My output is down, but my income is up.
I take a short position on the long bond,
and my revenue stream has its own cash flow.
I read junk mail, I eat junk food,
I buy junk bonds, I watch trash sports.
I'm gender-specific, capital-intensive,
user-friendly and lactose-intolerant.
I like rough sex; I like tough love.
I use the f-word in my e-mail.
And the software on my hard drive
is hard-core—no soft porn.
I bought a microwave at a mini-mall.
I bought a mini-van at a mega-store.
I eat fast food in the slow lane.
I'm toll-free, bite-size, ready-to-wear,
and I come in all sizes.
A fully equipped, factory-authorized,
hospital-tested, clinically proven,
scientifically formulated medical miracle.
I've been pre-washed, pre-cooked, pre-heated,
pre-screened, pre-approved, pre-packaged,
post-dated, freeze-dried, double-wrapped
and vacuum-packed.
And . . . I have unlimited broadband capacity.
I'm a rude dude, but I'm the real deal.
Lean and mean.
Cocked, locked and ready to rock;
rough, tough and hard to bluff.
I take it slow, I go with the flow;
I ride with the tide, I've got glide in my stride.
Drivin' and movin', sailin' and spinnin';
jivin' and groovin', wailin' and winnin'.
I don't snooze, so I don't lose.
I keep the pedal to the metal
and the rubber on the road.
I party hearty, and lunchtime is crunch time.
I'm hangin' in, there ain't no doubt;
and I'm hangin' tough.
Over and out.
~ George Carlin - AllyOfReason, on 06/23/2008, -0/+12What always amazed me was George's ability to perfectly recite his routines, with little-to-no error. I've seen him live three times and everytime his stand up was superb. A true comic genius.

RIP George
you will never be forgotten - Asianwaste, on 06/23/2008, -2/+44He was one of the few people that made the stand up comedians the modern equivalent to the ancient Greek Philosophers.

- Rally603, on 06/23/2008, -21/+15What's 'sad' is that this article probably won't get half as many diggs (not to mention media attention) as the ***** Heath Ledger death story.
On second thought, that's not sad. It's just plain disgusting.- Asianwaste, on 06/23/2008, -3/+40I'm by no means a Ledger fan, but I'll try to put it in a bit of a defensive perspective so it's not so disgusting to you.
Ledger died young, early, and unexpectedly at the prime of his youth and career. Carlin lived to 71 and had success until the day he died. Many would consider Carlin's death natural and Ledger's a great tragedy. Carlin lived what many identify and aspire to have as a complete life.
In a way you might say we are all happy for the end of Carlin's life as he left us with an overall good mark on earth. Carlin in his life probably accomplished everything he needed to, if not surpassing his life goals. It is sad to see Carlin go, but it was great to have him along.
Ledger's death was shortened and it's a waste of the potential he once had in life, thus a tragedy.- qwertydvorak, on 06/23/2008, -9/+0"Carlin lived to 71 and had success until the day he died."

He was one of the smartest standups ever to grace to stage. Heres a toast to you. - SwingCorey, on 06/23/2008, -19/+3Yes, it truly is sad, especially considering that he turned his back on religion and God.
I'm hoping his Maker sees the fun and laughter this man gave to generations of people and has mercy on his soul.- Codwhy, on 06/23/2008, -2/+6Dude, please dont defile our memories of George Carlin by trying to talk ***** about his personal beliefs.
I'm hoping you realize that you dont know anything more about the afterlife then George did, so keep your ***** to yourself.- dullly, on 06/23/2008, -5/+2I know his life was completely meaningless, and that we are all just random molecules that have happened to coelesce. I know there is no wright or wrong. There is no morality. Nothing matters. We are all dirt. God is dead. Life is a an illusion. And, you my friend are an idiot.
- Codwhy, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Dullly, Even if life is just an immensely complex grouping of random molecules, what will you do when you find out that your God doesn't exist?
For me, Life is a journey. It is about understanding myself and my fellow human beings, and learning to accept and appreciate everything that is happening. If we are all dirt, Life is an illusion, and there is no right or wrong, i will still die a happy and fulfulled human being.
I don't need a fictional being to dictate the meaning of life to me, life is what it is. Live every day with no regrets and enjoy everything while you can.
Enjoy church on sunday. I for one, will be sleeping.
- BoneheadFarker, on 06/23/2008, -2/+5Turned his back on religion??? He walked right up and told religion to kiss his ass, if that's what you mean by "turned his back on religion". ***** religion.
- RobotCitizen, on 06/23/2008, -1/+4***** you, SwingCorey, and your holier-than-thou religious douchebaggery. You are exactly what George spent his life decrying. I hope George tells your God to suck his *****.

- misterdrumz, on 06/23/2008, -10/+2What?!
I thought he died a few years back?
I remember him from Bill and Ted, Dogma etc. but in the past few years after that I watched his HBO specials....a lot of my mates weren't into it, (there was something about terororists that they thought was unamerican !?!?) but I loved his stand up stuff, and since I've got them going all the way back tothe 70-80s his humour was awesome all the way to the end.
A true great that will be missed
Again, didn't even know he was still with us until this article!- ManOfVirtues, on 06/23/2008, -2/+3Don't apologize for your friends, its not your fault they're idiots.
- ohmahgawd, on 06/23/2008, -9/+2Yes, an old man died, how sad? Why is it sad when someone old dies? They're nearing their final hand with a long and happy life behind them. It's not tragic, it's a part of life. Now if he died in his 20's, then be sad. But if he died old and with a long and fulfilling life behind him, be happy. His life ended with much done. I find it truly insulting to the person when they die in their 70's or 80's, or above, and people act like it's a tragedy. It's an insult to all they've done. It's like people think they'll live forever.
- Codwhy, on 06/23/2008, -0/+7Its not like we dont understand that life is not eternal. You find it "insulting" when people miss someone who has died? Clearly, by all of our "This is sad" comments, we are saying that we will miss George Carlin dearly, not that it was an unexpected tragedy.
it just sucks to lose him, have you no heart?- killacamry, on 06/23/2008, -0/+2hes a high tech low life

- lepton, on 06/23/2008, -0/+5My Mom was the secretary for the bastard who headed the group, "Morality in Media" that sued NY radio station WBAI for broadcasting Carlin's 7 dirty words bit - the case that went to the Supreme Court.
I was an avid 'BAI listener and knew all about the case. One day I'm visiting Mom at the Park Avenue office and I mentioned the case and she says "Oh, Mr [Bastard] brought that case. He was mad that his son heard the bit while they were in the car one afternoon." Whaaaaaat!! Man, was I pissed. He was otherwise a nice guy, doing what he thought was right, but geesh, he could have had his driver change the station..- RobotCitizen, on 06/23/2008, -0/+2This is exactly how most of these morality crusades start. I think that's what George Carlin would probably want people to say anyway. He was my favorite comedian, and a person who I have quoted far too often in my daily life. He will be missed... I kind of wanna listen to Jammin' in New York right about now. - sealhands, on 06/23/2008, -8/+40he was an atheist, don't demean his life and beliefs by projecting your beliefs into this tragic and sad occurrence. to even say suggest heaven regarding this topic goes against everything he stood for and is appalling, do you christians have no decency?
- flashback99, on 06/23/2008, -4/+16It so sad that even though he's dead, people still don't "get" him and what he stood for.
People like you who didn't know he was atheist and vehemently against religion. To say he's in heaven is to insult what he believed in.
He wasnt just a funny man who shouted a lot. He was an educator who challenged ignorant beliefs, like religion. - Sherman901, on 06/23/2008, -10/+3get over yourselves... you guys are ***** crazy. it's not like someone said about your mother. christ...

- benecere, on 06/23/2008, -1/+4For crying out loud...It was a humorous metaphoric tribute. Carlin would have been able to take a joke.
Atheism has become the solemn new religion with the strictest of rules and social guidelines; next thing, there'll be atheist nuns running around cracking knuckles with rulers for blasphemy of Atheist dogma. - sealhands, on 06/24/2008, -0/+1if carlin wasn't an outspoken atheist I would have had no problem. he was however, one of the foremost outspoken atheists of our generation and has done more for freethinking people than any other public figure. to say a joke that talks about him being in heaven - a concept he was vehemently opposed to - is to disrespect him. there are no rules or strict social guidelines, just dont make stupid jokes that disrespect us when we die. i dont go around saying dead christians are simply dead and not in heaven as that would be in poor taste. all im saying, and i think george would agree, is ***** off with the religion.
ps: look up metaphor. - benecere, on 06/24/2008, -1/+1Mr. ***** Seahands, I've had more educational years in the subject than you've years on Earth, so please YOU look up metaphor, you arrogant and ignorant son of a bitch (tell your mom I said that, please I mean it;, she did a lousy ***** job of raising a son) . Beyond that, I had Carlin's first album and I'd venture I know more than you do of him. Do you understand his religious humor? Hey, bitch, what was the religion in which he was raised, do you know? How ***** many times did you see him live? Did you see him, like in 1970----No? Then shut the ***** hell up!
- sealhands, on 06/24/2008, -0/+1 show the metaphor in saying that george carlin is in heaven? if you've been studying metaphors for 26 years I'm impressed and would like you to show me what I'm missing.
I apologize, i didn't mean to offend you and was just angry at the religion references and emotional from the death of one of my heros. Lets stop arguing and take the time think about George, thats what this is about, not us fighting about stupid *****.
i wasn't trying to be sarcastic about the metaphor, I am actually interested know where you think the metaphor is. - benecere, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Sealhands, I, too, apologize for having lost my temper. I was angry with more than what I found on line; I'm sorry that I lashed out. Rest assured, I do meet the criteria of the challenge as you've outlined it.
I'll define, as you asked, the nature of metaphor that spurred this rather ugly exchange. First consider that those who subscribe to any traditional version of "heaven" and "hell" would not allow for Carlin's admission to the former, and you'll uncover the first clue that the tributary was employing a figurative, allusive version of heaven rather than the one you gleaned..
Metaphoric speech comes in many flavors, the one in question here falls under what I'd categorize equally allegoric and conceptual. Its allegory resides in its vision of Carlin, his journey completed, having come to relax in a manner which he might have chosen. for himself Conceptual elements assert a kind of immortality, whereby his spirit lives on in the rebellion and questioning of authority it inspired and continues to inspire. As long as it does continue, Carlin is not fully dead.
It is the zealotry of the current breed of Atheism that I find alarming for it's tendency to be as literal as is the Creationist reading Genesis. Much of our literary history is told via religion. To preclude its insertion is to strip the depth that literary erudition and appreciation offers. One does not, after all, need be a Christian to gain from Dante's' Divine Comedy, nor does one need be pagan to reap rewards from Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. Zealotry under any banner remains zealotry, and therefore,oppressive. - sealhands, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1benecere, i appreciate your response and explanation.
my initial response to the claim that George Carlin was in heaven was fueled by the same emotional response that prompted our brief exchange. re-reading it, it is not totally void of atheistic zealotry and your point is noted.
However, I do retain my original sentiment that the comment about George Carlin being in heaven, left on the day after his death, was in poor taste.
As a central focus in the lives of authors of great art - you are poignantly correct - religion has a place in the communication of cultural mores and is a potent referential allegorical source. However, choosing to utilize a religious reference during a supposed tribute to one of the world's foremost anti-religious figures is not only a poor way to convey meaning, it is somewhat offensive given the sensitive nature of the topic.
I agree I was being hyper-sensitive, I realize the statement made was well-intentioned and i probably should have left it alone but to equate my paragraph with the horrors of religious zealotry is unfair.
sorry this is long, i could go on and on...i appreciate your kind response

But even in the midst of his passing, I don't consider him "the most legendary stand-up comic of all time."

You will NOT steal Dave Chappelle from Generation X. Dave Chappelle started during Gen X's comedic awareness time, therefore he belongs to us. Dane Cook is all yours.
- zyklon, on 06/23/2008, -1/+57The ting about Carlin's death is that now, there's such a large amount of reason missing from the world.
- FTLJohnson, on 06/23/2008, -0/+15Luckily we still have Randi, and Gilette.
- flashback99, on 06/23/2008, -0/+3We need comedians like Carlin. Since nobody can be bothered to challenge peoples views - not the government, nor the man on the street, who is too busy earning tax for the government to complain / think about anything.
In our society it's always down to the comedian to push people to get them to laugh, think and connect on a deeper level.
- acegi, on 06/23/2008, -1/+16George left a void that cannot be filled.
There will never be another Carlin - LucasVB, on 06/23/2008, -2/+23The problem is, for this generation, people like Dane Cook are considered hilarious. Face it, it's all downhill from here.
- MrSparkle666, on 06/23/2008, -2/+9And how many crappy comedians were considered hilarious in Carlin's time? Plenty. Do I remember their names? No. Will people remember Dane cook when if he dies at 71? It's unlikely. People who think art/music/comedy/film/theater has been going downhill need to open their eyes. There is tons of great talent. Pop-culture has been, and always will be crap. Great talent withstands the test of time.

- curtisag, on 06/23/2008, -4/+38Carlin wasn't just a comedian to me, he was sort of a mentor when I was a child. I grew up in a religious family, and he helped me break free of the brainwashing I was subjected to in church. I watched him as a kid and was blown away by how intelligent, funny, and reasoned his logic was. He definitely helped me form my views today regarding religion. After watching him once, I boldly told my parents I hated church at the age of 14. I was of course punished for that and watching Carlin, but I continued to watch and open my mind to new possibilities. He and others like him saved me from a lifetime of ignorance.

- KDAY12, on 06/23/2008, -102/+12Well, I guess he will finally get to see if his bitterness towards God was well served or not.

Fart, Turd, and ***** were the first 3 words Carlin added to the list. - silverbulletky, on 06/23/2008, -0/+2Yes.. your comments fails, not his. Do some research next time.
- Swarms, on 06/23/2008, -1/+20It's hard to believe how much fail THAT comment is.
- AshamedAmerican, on 06/23/2008, -2/+59Why are you being dugg down? Those were the first three words he added to the original list. Guess that shows how many actual fans are on this.
- SuperWinner, on 06/23/2008, -2/+13Only true fans know about those words, most diggers have no clue they just digg whats popular...
- Dimbleby, on 06/23/2008, -27/+1Do you even know why he posted that specific set of words?
Are you just throwing out random werds?
Then I shall do so too: Dicknose. *****. *****.
Your turn!!- Swarms, on 06/23/2008, -1/+6Later, Carlin referred to three additional "auxiliary" words:
1. Fart - I farted.
2. Turd - Who dropped a turd in the urinal?
3. ***** - Shave that hairy *****. - silverbulletky, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1Do you even know why he posted those additional three words? Or 'werds' as you called them.
- Swarms, on 06/23/2008, -1/+6Later, Carlin referred to three additional "auxiliary" words:
- rentmitchum, on 06/23/2008, -5/+5He might be being dugg down because Blink 182 had a track on their live CD where they sing that list with the words TheDarkTipper added.. Digg seems to hate Blink 182.
- Brad324, on 06/23/2008, -5/+2wtf?
- rentmitchum, on 06/23/2008, -2/+10See what happened was someone asked a question and I proposed a possible answer. Now I ask you, wtf? Are you trying to be clever by asking "wtf?" to someone who is actually trying to contribute? Hmm? I ask you sir. WTF?
They sang it thusly:
"*****, piss, ***** ***** ***** *****, ***** fart turd and *****" like 3 times, then sang "I ***** your moooommmmmm". It was on the live album, the Mark Tom and Travis Show. A friend of mine is a big fan, I had to listen to it my entire teenage life as he was the first friend of mine with a car, and I wasn't gonna drive myself to Toys R Us to play with lightsabers and PS2 demos.. So there you go. So, now you. WTF? - seraph582, on 06/23/2008, -3/+7it's not just Digg that hates Blink182 - have you heard their music? Jeeeezus christ. It's like they're trying to recreate in sound what a headache feels like.
- rupturexcore, on 06/23/2008, -2/+2There there, seraph, just go listen to Enya and pop a Vicodin.
*note, I have nothing against popping Vicodins, just Enya. - skyroket, on 06/23/2008, -2/+3It's not that Digg hates Blink, it's just that lately, Digg has had an influx of 12-year-olds that use the site as a cheap way to look at stuff NetNanny doesn't always get to very quickly...and they have no ***** clue who George Carlin is or was.

- jpmonkeycat, on 06/23/2008, -1/+44just so you guys know, brad3378 is making reference to the "7 words" routine which immortalized Mr. Carlin in a US Supreme Court ruling (F.C.C. v. Pacifica Foundation, 438 U.S. 726). Mr. Carlin made a very significant contribution to broadcasting laws in America by challenging censorship in the guise of obscenity laws. He was brilliant and funny, but he also stood for something.

- thedsack, on 06/23/2008, -2/+1I thought it was more like, taking a picture of the most fitting tribute to Mr. Carlin and isolating it with the headline... But thanks for explaining how I am a digg n00b.
- Raphae1, on 06/23/2008, -1/+1George Carlin wasn't only good at swearing, he also had a very good insight into America. I just submitted it yesterday (before he died?):

- bonk2k, on 06/23/2008, -1/+7Ringo didn't have ***** on him. Well, ok, maybe Ringo did kick ass as well, but George Carlin will be missed nevertheless.
- xGeneric, on 06/23/2008, -0/+8I was a youngin when I was introduced to Carlin. Saw Jammin' in New York on HBO when I was just a kid, and I was instantly hooked. Since then I've bought just about every single video I could find of the guy, and the pinnacle of my obsession with his brand of comedy came when I saw him live March of this year in Boston. With his history of heart trouble, I knew this day wasn't far off, so I made sure to remember and enjoy every moment of it... well, as much as I could... I had the opputunity to get stoned before the show.
Simply my favorite comedian of all time. No exceptions.
