    While I'm glad there's a chance this article will make the FP, I'd like to point out how par for the course it is that you will take a submission that is clearly in the duplicate check and submit it anyway, rather than send shouts for the actual existing submission.

    See, that's the difference between self-promotion and article promotion. In the end, if the article was all that mattered, you'd shout the existing one. I know that when I submit an article and I see a duplicate, if it's a good article I will Digg and maybe shout to my friends. If I submit it anyway, I do it to blog it and nothing else.

    Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I have to call you out on this because you do this all the time. I generally dislike comments where one person posts a link to an article that was already submitted, but that's nobodies vs nobodies. You're a somebody. You should use your power on Digg to help the little guy instead of helping yourself. And in the end, I will still digg your story and other stories because I am digging the story, not the submitter.

As of the time you wrote your comment, your submission was approximately 1 day 6 hours ago (and as of now it has 19 diggs, including mine). So even if MBM, or anyone for that matter, shouts your submission to their friends, there was really no way that your submission would have gotten the credit it deserves. It would have died from the upcoming section with only 18 people having viewed it.

      So although I see your beef, my point is that a lot of good content gets lost in the upcoming section and were it not for MBM and others, that content would never be viewed by the masses and in the end, that is all that matters, IMO.

        What's the difference?
        - A more powerful Headline
        - Shouts?

        Maybe there's something we can learn from this to get more Diggs...

        The problem is that good content is languishing and dying because there are the elite who are guaranteed to have their stories get to the front page are the only ones who can get their stories to the front page.

        Then you have some of the elites, like MBM, who pull crap like blatantly ignoring the dupe check. If people truly liked this story and weren't following a stupid cult of personality, then it would have made it to the front page anyway.

Now, let me give you the part you're missing - what if you (say MyBabyMan) has a good idea about how the algorithm works, and that they know that after about 24 hours a submission that hasn't been picked up has a better shot of being revived.

        Meaning, if he was going to submit this article, but got it from say...seeing mine...he could wait 24 hours and then submit it, while posting it a few hours after mine is clear plagiarism.

        I'm noticing that articles that are a day old can by FP, what matters is the heat and when that heat qualifies as made popular - interest seems to be weighted more than date in some circumstances. Ever since the recommendation engine, there seems to be a wider net. And the "pro" Diggers are doing well again. MakiMaki had two articles in a row the other day. optimusprime1 has had a ton lately as well. And a lot of "stale" articles can/are being revived because of the way recommendation works.

        Now maybe my theory and observations are wrong, but even if my article is over 24 hours old, if MyBabyMan shouted it, the heat on the submission would bounce it into upcoming. And if it stayed hot in upcoming for about 2-3 hours it will hit FP. People complain "X article has 300 Diggs but it's not FP, what is wrong" - I think it's that 300 Diggs over 4 hours is worse than 200 Diggs over 2 hours.

He submitted the same story, albeit from a different source and it was the one to get popular. Granted, he did digg the story I shouted but he left it at that. I think the top submitters think digg is more of a competition or just have big egos instead of what Kevin Rose and Co. actually intended it to be. Especially evidenced to me by jaybol submitting XKCD and getting his submission popular. I got dugg down when I ranted though.

        You have to understand, Digg is awesome. But it's dominated by a select few people. When people like me get steamrolled like this, it's because this person is gaming the system for actual monetary compensation. They are either being paid to promote articles or are promoting articles to promote their brand, which in turn leads to more business for them.

        Everyone complains that Digg has too many XYZ articles and not enough Tech or whatever. Well, that's because it's not democratic from the bottom up. The little guys, the people who do it for purely altruistic reasons are the ones who should be dugg. We go to Digg to see different things. We want it to push interesting info to us. But we're limiting our exposure to the whim of a select few people.

        If the average Digger does not speak up like this from time to time, all we become are clickthru revenue for the top echelon of powerful Digg users. I think we should set the table in proportion to our numbers. I want a better Digg. It's only a fraction of it's potential awesomeness.

I have never submitted an article that got more than 20 diggs but i have seen the same article i originally submitted make the front page from someone else. Seeing as even if it did make the front page i would gain no royalties or even recognization I tend to lean in the direction of thinking that as long as someone gets the content to the front page that it does not matter who got it there. MBM is the only poster i have ever heard of and i am sure the ones that i have not heard of make the front page all the time. So front page does not necessary equate to glory.       Unless you were doing a search for "hot 63 year old women," it is likely it was brought to your attention through some popular source, and it is plausible that you both saw the source. Worst case scenario, Mrbabyman saw your submission and thought it was worth another go. End of the world? Probably not.

      Building an internet reputation is just a little more futile than backing up all your CDs on audio cassette, you may be proud of yourself but in reality it is a step back.
