- AcePup, on 10/11/2007, -8/+61@popdmb
I know it's now.
In regards to my previous comment about it being probably one of the fastest stories to make the frontpage it was made popular in just 12 minutes with 90diggs, just for the record. Because us Diggers love stats. :) - 69sofine, on 10/11/2007, -6/+259Seriously, is there a more polarizing figure than Paris? I mean, people either hate her or abhor her.
- Stonedonkey, on 10/11/2007, -7/+395"That's not something we should be proud of."
Dude, this ain't about celebrity obsession. How many other Paris Hilton stories have you seen on the front page? Ever?
It's about spoiled rich bitches not being above the law. - unicronband, on 10/11/2007, -7/+106She should've blown the judge too...
- sjl127, on 10/11/2007, -5/+21Justice dispensed - very appropriately.
- insomniacal, on 10/11/2007, -1/+283@saintdesy : "Let's try to have her STAY in jail this time."
Naw, let's keep releasing her and dragging her back in -- it's much more entertaining. They say she left the court screaming today. - ilyag, on 10/11/2007, -5/+290If you live in the area, contact your local government officials to remove Sheriff Lee Baca from his post. He was the person who released her, despite the fact that the judge's sentencing SPECIFICALLY said that she was not allowed to use house arrest in lieu of jail.
He's already probably going to be held in contempt of court, which I don't think is enough for this egregious abuse of power. - locd32, on 10/11/2007, -22/+12Yeah but how many days will it last this time?
- NyteStarNyne, on 10/11/2007, -4/+97Need more croc tears you say Digg? Sure, why not.

There are people in jail with cancer, with AIDS, with real problems (mental and physical) - and they all get to serve their time. They don't get to leave because they have a hangnail.
When Hilton got out, I was incredibly angry, because it was a failure of the idea of Rule of Law: that no one, not the rich, or the powerful, is above the Law.
The judge seems to believe this as well. It might be only symbolic, but maybe if one rich person is forced to actually obey the law, then there's hope that others who think they are above it will give pause and think that, unless they also decides to obey the laws of the land, they could be next. - arcooke, on 10/11/2007, -16/+38Everyone go leave her a note, and be as mean as humanly possible. I know that's hard to believe for anyone with half a brain.. But really. Even my Mom wishes they'd let her free, and many of the girls on campus were writing petitions to keep her out of jail.
It's sick and sad, but I think that's just american pop culture nowadays. - ChronicColonic, on 10/11/2007, -14/+72The thought of Paris in handcuffs is kind of a turn-on IMHO.

WTF? Really love? You've gotta be kidding me. Just wish we had a little more consistent (and just) justice system here in the US.
- phantom_mullet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+55Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't she say on TV that she would serve her sentence out and that she didn't want any sort of "special treatment"? And yet she leaves the courtroom kicking and screaming?

She's not in jail because of a DUI. She's in jail for violating the terms of her probation. She was on probation because of the DUI. lawl - canadianguy33, on 10/11/2007, -18/+1I'm not a Paris Hilton fan but I fail to see why everyone's so happy that she's going back to jail. I mean, seriously, 45 days in jail for a DUI is harsh. I'm sure everyone knows someone that has drunk and drove; do you really believe they deserve a month and a half in jail? I mean, sure Paris can easily afford to take 45 days off of work, but what if you, your regular-joe friend or family member got the same sentence? I'm sure being absent from your life for 45 days could ***** your life up pretty good.
Also, let's be real, does anyone actually believe she jumped behind the wheel with the intent of hurting anyone? Personally, I believe the whole approach to crimes involving alcohol and drugs is flawed. - Konstantino, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5@ girthagain:

http://californiafor30dollarsaday.ytmnd.com/ - HailToTheKing, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Well I mean justice has been combated pretty hard by the Paris camp. An initial 45 day sentence reduced to a seemingly withstand able 23 day sentence, endures three whole days worth of prison time then gets out! An apparent house arrest situation set up! Then what today she is ordered back? Hell how about this, Paris spends three day stints in jail, then the fourth day she gets a whole 24 hours at home, on house arrest! Seriously to the guy who earlier said, "Justice 1 Paris 0." *****, more like Justice 1 Paris 1303! Honestly this is pretty corrupt, being rich and white should be every little girls ideal!
- BESTenemy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1War in Iraq? Taxes? Elections? Poverty? Alberto Gonzales?
Who the hell cares! Paris is back in jail!
Each time something like this hits the front page I know, some big politician messed up or there's a contravercial law about to get passed beneath the view of the public. Makes me sick this country care more about anything, but the actual problems. - mabhatter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually this is good... even for the idea of bigger fish out there to deal with. Most of the security laws and anti trust laws, laws against human tourture, against denying civil liberties.... all have JAIL time! but nobody gets the time. If the judge had fined her a million dollars instead, she'd have had daddy pay it and been right back out.. no lesson learned. Start racking up rich people for the TIME and you'll start to see corporate crimes drop and the whole US get more civil.
That said, I've got no pity at all. Had a brother-in-law that did 6 months for something really stupid drunk... then got 13 MORE months plus longer probation for less than her (and FINALLY straightened out.) Typical for a second or third DUI offense is up to a year in PRISON, not city lockup. 45 day's still isn't "fair" compared to what a guy with a PD would get for the same offense. - Thirityfive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0i hope that the biggest bull dike in that jail has her with with her

I'll give them props when they deserve it. Lately, it seems like they've been deserving it less and less. - cmw72, on 10/11/2007, -26/+14I'll probably regret saying this ... but I'm starting to feel kinda bad for her. At first I thought it was funny, but it's just getting sad.
Sounds like she got in the middle of a pissing match between the sheriff and the judge.
Commence the digging down... - fuzzynyanko, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Apparently she's getting the entire 45-day sentence.
I wonder how'd she act if she got 2 years or more... - catalysis, on 10/11/2007, -11/+4Here's a good quote from the judge
"That tells you about the reputation of some news agencies. Not FOX news, but TMZ."
This guy is a hard-core conservative christian and he is reveling in every minute of this. You may love him for bringing the hammer down on Paris but I would imagine this isn't the first time he has dished out heavy-handed justice for misdemeanor offenses. Be careful what you wish for. - maleva, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19@cmw72
For a second there, I almost felt bad for her too. But then I remembered that she's a vapid, spoiled brat who has already gotten away with far too much.
Contrary to popular belief, she's not going to jail for driving drunk. She's going to jail for being caught driving with a suspended license --not once, not twice, but THREE times!
So, even though they stem from self-pity rather than any sort of remorse or reflection/understanding of the gravity of either her original offense, I'm really ***** relishing her tears right now. She flouted the law on multiple occasions (getting multiple breaks/multiple chances) and misdirected as her sorrow may be, I'm glad she's upset by the situation she put herself in. - JaWright, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2@maleva
Although I do not condone her actions and feel that punishment should be required there are many who violate probation and serve zero jail time. I cant stand the bitch but have had friends receive a DUI while on probation for a DUI and still only receive more probation, a hefty fine, and a breathalyser attached to their car.
Just feel there needs to be a consistent punishment for an offense that occurs so frequently.
Commence the digging down... /sigh - missflibbles, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14I'm not normally the type of person who takes pleasure in someone else's misery.
I like to think that human beings are all entitled to fair treatment, even when one of us screws up a bit. After all, I'd expect a little understanding for my situation if I were in that situation.
However, I've never been so happy to see someone cry. This country is built upon the idea that if you break the rules, no matter how much money you have, no matter how much people like you, and no matter how "pretty" you are, you still have to serve the same punishment as anyone else. I was enraged when she was let out for house arrest, because like someone said earlier, there are people dying of AIDS and that have cancer that still have to serve out their sentences. Now some faith in our justice system has been restored.
Now, anyone have a large picture of her being carted off, or am I going to have to tile this thing on my desktop? - diggingaround, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1

They kinda stretched those 3 actual days in 5... you know, she was attending that MTV event and than turned her self in before midnight that day, so they count that day as FULL day... actually she slept in her cell for full 3 days.

No, I don't mean Paris's pain. Look at the DRIVER. He's being all stoic, but he's got to put up with that woman screaming at 130 decibels less than a yard away from him. Additionally, he has the paparazzi's flash bulbs in his eyes slowing down the journey and blinding him with flashes the whole way.

- mgriswold, on 10/11/2007, -34/+10You people are killing me. I don't like Paris Hilton. But what's her crime? Driving on a suspended license? DUI? Partying? Having premarital sex?
I'm not advocating anything that Paris does. But it's the media's fault she gets so much attention, not her's. Moreover, we have people like O.J. Simpson, Robert Blake and Michael Jackson living the good life after being charged with some VERY SERIOUS crimes.
Where's the outrage? Where are the cries for justice there?
Paris Hilton can move to Zimbabwe for all I care. But while she's here, plastered all over my television and newspapers, I might as well call a spade a spade. People are screaming for her head, while people CELEBRATED the not-guilty verdicts in the O.J. and Michael Jackson cases.
People should be ashamed of themselves. - s1mph0ny, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15@mgrisworld:
The fact that she hasn't killed anyone (driving) isn't of importance. Her willful disregard for the law showed that she would kill somebody soon if she wasn't jailed. You have to jail to meet a justice requirement (driving drunk without a license is a felony), and the deterrent requirement (she was going to get someone killed).
If the hamburger was so important to her she could have at least taken a bicycle or motorcycle to avoid killing others. - mgriswold, on 10/11/2007, -17/+4@s1mph0ny
Seriously, that's your response? You think I'm advocating drinking and driving? You seriously think Paris Hilton is a threat to KILL someone?
I don't care that she's in jail. Lock her up. I'm pissed that so many people think it's awesome, but don't care about people getting off the hook for crimes that are much worse.
I repeat: O.J. Simpson (double homicide), Robert Blake (murdered wife) and Michael Jackson (child molestation) are all FREE, making gobs of money and living the lives most of us dream about.
I think it's pathetic. - NSMike, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18@mgriswold -
She basically flipped the justice system the bird twice by being caught driving on a suspended license after a DUI.
That was her punishment the first time around, as well as alcohol rehab. She ignored it, and now she's being punished for trying to avoid her original, much less stringent punishment.
Excusing her actions would be the same as excusing all of the people who have done the same. Excusing her actions also shows that the justice system is preferential towards those who have celebrity and/or money. That causes a lot of civil unrest, whether it's true or not.
Whether or not it is true, I don't know. The court of public opinion has certainly convicted both Jackson and Simpson multiple times, and Simpson lost a civil case. Neither one has not suffered at least a little bit from these results. - bemenaker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14No what is pathetic is how she was getting special treatment for being the rich slut daughter of a successful business man, while the rest of us would have been told to suck it up, we did the crime, we do the time. Now she has to do the time like the rest of us, and all her daddy's billions can't bail her pathetic useless ass out this time.
- mrgreen4242, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15You're both idiots. Yes, her crime is driving on a suspended license in direct and obvious violation of her DUI related probation. She got a "warning" and a pretty light sentence and disregarded it. I think it's fair to give her the max penalty because she had no reason to violate it. She is perfectly capable of getting other means of transportation, more so than even your average citizen. Plus, she lied to the court - they can't prove it, but everyone knows she lied about not knowing her license was suspended. She signed the form saying she was informed of it! If she had been honest about it and maybe a little apologetic rather than "I'm Paris Hilton, I can do whatever I want because I have money to hire a ***** load of lawyers" maybe should would have got some leniency.
- Khabi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@mgriswold
I'm going to give you the simple version of this. Your 3 examples there, were all found Not Guilty by a jury. I'm not going to say one way or another if they did or didn't do it. Thats what the court system, and a jury of peers is there to discover. There is NO perfect judicial system, you can be as delusional as you want, but at the end of the day, this is what we have. If you're so "outraged" about those 3 cases, then try to change they system. As it is right now, they're in the clear, time to move on.
The truth of the matter is that those 3 cases have nothing to do with this one. I don't give a rat's ass about Paris either, but the media and society is finicky at best. She is the hot news today, because people see her as someone who bought her way out of a sentence. That strikes a chord with a large amount of the population. I'm sure you're going to say the other 3 did as well, but they were found not guilty by a jury, people belive that she payed her way out of the jail cell. She's still guilty. - ender42081, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0in my eyes she isn't being punished for the DUI or the suspended license. she is being jailed because she is too dumb to be in society. better reason than alot of the people in jail right now. I would have been happy with the 5 days and mental breakdown, but this is awesome. she had better wise up at least a LITTLE or do like foamy suggests and down a bottle of jack daniels and go tree hunting in a ferrari. -If your so rich, why aren't you smart?

- johnhummel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Well, one thing at a time - hopefully we can apply enough pressure on that case as well, and make people start to worry about how stable their government jobs are when they start to act stupid.
- psyjoniz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5that kid is getting a really rough deal, for sure. way unfair.
- ronaldinho, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Oh I remember that story, that's horrible. I still can't believe that. Genarlow Wilson I believe? That was just sickening. Dugg for bringing up that story.
I think someone on digg brought this up before: a 12-year-boy can begin to have intent for murder, then why a 15-year-old girl cannot begin to have intent for sex and make her own judgment? Our laws really need a lot of work still. - nosecohn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5In a way, I think these two cases are related... culturally. When our media turns young people like Paris into celebrities for simply being sexual while being seen, it's not too surprising that some of our teens end up acting the same way. Our culture supports the acceptability of teen sex in every way but explicitly. I'm not saying that's good or bad, it's just what is. But the law doesn't represent the current reality, so shamefully regards Genarlow Wilson as a criminal for doing something which is essentially accepted, just not spoken of.
- maisis00, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5That whole situation is just completely out of hand. She was 15 he was 17 they are two years apart in age. I am fairly certain that I remember this happening with some frequency when I was in high school back in the 90s. I don't remember anyone being sentenced to jail for 10yrs in prison for this kind of crap either. I don't personally condone or promote teen sex as a good idea but this is the core of what defines bad legislation. It is just crazy. This makes me so angry at GA lawmakers, that DA and the backwoods judge that tried & sentenced this kid.
Only way I could see this situation having any teeth was if he were 18 and they were saying he committed statutory rape. Even then you do not sentence a 17 year old kid to 10 years in jail for statutory rape when the act was consensual and initiated by the young party. - nosecohn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I think prosecutorial discretion failed here, but there's one important fact that sometimes doesn't come up in the press about this case: It's Georgia. He's black. She's white.
I can imagine a prosecutor in the South thinking he might get booted (or lynched) for not bringing this case to trial.
Of course, that doesn't make it any less bogus. The video purportedly shows the girl blowing another guy just before him, and she testified that the act was entirely consensual. Plus, if they'd had intercourse instead, it would have just been a misdemeanor. They're ruining this guy's life for having poor enough judgment to get video taped, thereby forcing the community to confront their denial about what they all know is going on every day with their teenagers.
