Todd Goliath (Goldman), Art Thief
forums.somethingawful.com — Step 1: Todd Goldman, world renowned artist who comes up with really gay (read: witty) catchphrases about how stupid boys are blatently steals art from another. Step 2: ? Step 3: Goldman Profits

- chaosium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51The piece was blatantly ripped from artist and animator Dave Kelly AKA Shmorky
- EKinnee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17The blatant theft of an idea from another artist who is trying to make it is quite sad. Depending on the response of Todd Goldamn/Goliath, Dave Kelly should contact either a lawyer or all of the Galleries Todd's work is displayed in.
- seajay1221, on 10/12/2007, -31/+2Hate to abuse the comment system (read: not really) but I'm a huge south park fan, so: "Hey, what's Step 2?!"
- schnoggi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14what's more noteworthy about this is that cutesy little cartoon ACTUALLY GOT WALL SPACE IN A GALLERY?
jesus christ, anymore it seems like the Juxtapoz gang will put up anything with a cliche in it
is it like ironic that it's ironic that it's ironic or what? so hard to keep count.
that scene was so awesome in the beginning, now it's just a bunch of imitators imitating imitators
sooooo stale - steger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16My girlfriend was the one that emailed the artist (Shmorky). Todd seems to rip off a lot of other artists too. I even saw the gallery (which is at the Grove in LA ,near LACMA). I thought it was the original artists selling but now I am mistaken. This guy is a douche.
- ezweave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I remember going out to that gallery at the Grove two summers ago and saw his work... I swear there were two or three I had seen elsewhere, but I didn't have a camera on me.
I hate to be so crass, but nail his balls to the wall. - spankaccount, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've been to his LA art studio a few times now. It's amazing how much people will pay for crap art.
- wmcheesemaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16what a jerkface
- avonwodahs, on 10/12/2007, -48/+7Luckily for me, plagiarism does not happen in SPARTA!

- kelvena, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1He probably goes to YTMND every day, because it's definitely not over there :(
- pr0k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13what a HUGE jerkface
edit: lol google ads on this page for his t-shirts and crap- spankaccount, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3There are ads on this page? Wow when did Digg add ads?
- DrunkMage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10This guy seems to rip off most of his *****. I wonder if he understands the word "original." No wait, he's witty and spontaneous and doesn't read comics! (just rips them off)
- rachelsinatra, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5but...but...less 11 year olds like Shmorky!
- cookiebearo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7it took me a while to figure out what you were saying, until i realized that you probably meant "fewer" not "less"
- Shookies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Plagiarism is not cool. Making money off plagiarism is double not cool. I wonder if this guy will choose road a) public apology and share any profits pertaining to the stolen work or b) route of the mythical douche bag.
- Enfenestrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I'm betting that he'll take the douche bag route.
Even if he takes down the offending piece(s), I can't imagine that there will be a public apology. - evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Mythical? I assure you, douche bags are quite real.
- Enfenestrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I'm betting that he'll take the douche bag route.
- FyreDank, on 10/12/2007, -69/+1SA steals art all the time. Ever heard of Photoshop Phriday?
- Ninjers, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30Taking an image and editing it is stealing art? It's not like they claimed they made the original image. Get your head out of your ass before you comment.
- FyreDank, on 10/12/2007, -63/+1You dumb *****. I'm not saying the original artists of photoshop phriday are theifs. Lowtax is a thief because he takes art from the forums, puts his watermark on them, posts them on the front page, and gets paid for it. Without the orginal artists' consent or knowledge.
- chaosium, on 10/12/2007, -6/+37"You dumb *****. I'm not saying the original artists of photoshop phriday are theifs. Sweet jesus you're retarded. Have you even submitted anything for the Photoshop Phriday?
It's created by his forums users and with their full and complete knowledge. - manifestdata, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Makes sense this guy acts like this. FyreDank means ***** in dutch.
- McTendo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Stop posting, FyreDank. No one is falling for your act.

Uh.... No, photoshop phriday is not used with full knowledge. They take a photoshop thread from the forums, and steal the images without permission. It's a ***** rip off. - Handre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7You are incredibly dumb.
- Cymoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Do you have any specific examples? I'm sure that every photoshop there can be accounted for. *****, I have a photoshop put up there as well. The thread that I submitted it to said they were going on the front page, and it did get put up there with me credited.
- soapyshoes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Does anyone really get mad at all when their image was used for a Photoshop Phriday? ARG MY IMAGE WAS USED ON THE FRONT PAGE OF A SITE THAT I REALLY LIKE, ARRGGGGHHH
if anything, i'd be honored. Plus, everyone gets credited for it anyway. - GWBBQ, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9FyreDank, you suck at trolling.
- hamstereater, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7You know, you're right Fyredank. Any rights Shmorky has over his artwork should be thrown away because people willingly submit photoshops to the website something awful dot com.
excellent - repeekecaep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You do realize that for all Photoshop Phriday's it lists the forum user who created the image above each and every image...that is called crediting the author. And I have yet to hear anyone ever complain that they didn't know their image would be used in the article and demand it removed, it is kind of obvious when you participate in events like this that the image will be used.
- 64bitllama, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Hahaha! changing an image is not the same as "completely stealing an image line for line"
Besides, copyright laws say that photomanipulation for satirical purposes is legal, given that the image has been changed in a noticeable way with reasonable effort. I don't think copyright laws are so light on "Directly copying an image for profit".
So, my question is: Are you actually this oblivious to common sense?
- jimmsta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11What a piece of ***** 'Todd' is.

That's so convincing! I'm convinced!
...
Am I buried yet?
- moralgriever, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11It's incredible how people don't pay attention. I wonder if this idiot has ever seen that Lowtax ALWAYS MENTION who made each photoshopped image he uses for the phridays.
- Handre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7And the fact that people post photoshops in photoshop threads with the hopes of it being featured on the frontpage.
- FyreDank, on 10/12/2007, -35/+1"And the fact that people post photoshops in photoshop threads with the hopes of it being featured on the frontpage."
Keep telling yourself that. - Handre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Umm I've actually had a photoshop thread of mine on the frontpage. Stop being a ***** moron please.
- FyreDank, on 10/12/2007, -28/+0Speak for yourself. You don't represent every artist who Lowtax exploits on the front page.
- Handre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7People post it on HIS forums and their names are displayed with the images and they know perfectly well that it can be put up on the frontpage. If they are too dumb to realise that then they are the same people who autoban themselves.
- metadefumaca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This guy probably has pressure to produce multiple designs, and perhaps the old imagination well is running a bit dry. He should have looked into who he was going to rip off before doing it.... Surely not even god himself would purposefully unleash the sound and the fury of the goons. ***** Todd Goliath and the horse he rode in on.
- DiscoLando, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4Bono said it best:
"Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief."- EKinnee, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Well, hell. If Bono said that I don't know what we're all upset about. I mean, really, Bono.
Time to go home boys and girls. - DiscoLando, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Wow! If your intent was to infer a completely foreign meaning from my post, then congratulations! You win!
- chaosium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You're not directly referencing it, but the famous "great artists steal" line goes best with someone with skill to begin with, not the kind of guy whose "works" belong in novelty gift shops next to rubber *****.
- knaps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Actually, Einstein said it best.
"The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources."
So Toddykins is definitely NOT creative by this definition. Actually he isn't creative by any definition. He's just an asshat who I hope gets what's coming to him. It amazes me how blatant he is with that picture. It's like, you'd have to actually work hard at being more obvious than that. He did everything short of calling up Shmorky and saying what he did.
- EKinnee, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Well, hell. If Bono said that I don't know what we're all upset about. I mean, really, Bono.
- retrocrush, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Countdown before eBaum slaps his name on that picture....
- kidjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12this guy was always displayed in a gallery at the Grove in L.A. right near where I used to work.
i always thought of his stuff as trite and masturbatory. its like he's slapping real artists in the face by selling a 48x48 stick figure of a ***** table with a lamp on it for 900 dollars.
now i hope he gets sued into oblivion. piece of crap.- creamyhorror, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I looked through his "art", and ye gods, I can't believe people pay premium for this ***** (but that's just me). The real trouble is that not enough people know about all the individual artists whose designs are up on Threadless, Cafepress and such sites, so they buy Todd's (cutesy, trite, stupid or COPIED) stuff at department stores. There's a wealth of artists and designers out there who have displayed far more talent than this guy, who doesn't even have the principles to avoid imitating others' designs.

It's easy to look at what Goldman has done and think "I can do that." Draw a stick figure. Throw it on a T-shirt with a taunt little girls have said for ages. Or a silly play on words ("I am shellfish," with a picture of a shellfish). Or phrases we've all tossed out when we've been trying to be witty ("I'll sleep when I'm old," with a girl lowering herself from her bedroom window by a rope). Or phrases played with a twist ("Don't play well with others," with a girl stitching up a battered teddy bear).
Yes, you can do that. But you didn't.

- tuzziel, on 10/12/2007, -28/+3Prejudice, someone says something on some dirty messageboard and everybody here immediatelly agrees. What if Dave Kelly steals it from Todd Goldman? There may be much more to the story then you can see on the surface. I would at least ask both sides before smearing and drawing major conclusions....

- tombom, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4you have a point but be prepared for the legions of goons voting you down without even reading what you have to say

looolll
ok i don't really agree with your point anymore although i am definitely interested in what the other guy has to say - tombom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2ok i read it again and you're kind of a duck i'll ignore your point
- Handre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Well all one needs is a confirmation on the date of "Todd's" piece and we'll know, won't we? I'm pretty sure Shmorky didn't base an entire webcomic of a stupid painting by some *****.
- chaosium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Goliath also ripped off Roman Dirge's Lenore for one of his characters.

http://www.davidandgoliathtees.com/index.php?mode=HCDE - KickTheBobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm kinda wondering how much Lenore was influenced by Wednesday Addams & the work of Edward Gorey.

He's not a duck. He's a habbit. - chaosium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"I'm kinda wondering how much Lenore was influenced by Wednesday Addams & the work of Edward Gorey."
Well, with all "goth" leaning art there's going to be a nod to Gorey and Addams. While I've never managed to get into his stuff, he seems to have done an okay job at differentiating himself. - 76x19, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Except for the fact that most of us have been Shmorky's fans LONG before this Todd bastard came into commercial existence. Most of us saw this picture LONG before Todd even thought about jerking off onto a T-shirt and calling it "art". Why don't YOU get all the facts, asshat.
- Amurana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The art that was stolen was already published in physical form many years before Todd put his out. It is a blatant case of theft, and he deserves everything that's coming to him. I'm not of the mob mentality. This really is something to get angry about.
- badken, on 10/12/2007, -29/+3WTF is this doing on the front page?
Buried because it's on the SA forums.- fishmecha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7that makes no sense whatsoever
- Cappi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wait, so why does it's origin matter? You were banned from SA for being a furry during ye olde lolacaust, weren't you?
- ragley, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1Who cares?
- PlaidPhantom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Anyone who's seriously drawn, written or otherwise made anything creative should care about this. What Todd Goliath did is a slap in the face to that effort.
- moralgriever, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Awwww somebody has a grudge here, FyreDank. I've visited SA site for years, and I have never seen a single photoshop that didn't mention who made it. I've been a member if that site for the same amount of time, and I have never, not even once, come across a single thread of somebody complaining. That you have a grudge here doesn't mean you can just go RAWRGH RANT RANT RANT here. And Tuzziel, it has been proven that Shmorky made that cartoon years ago for a comic.
- tombom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Rude words are regularly spread in den of inequity
so dirrrtttyy..... - moralgriever, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Yeah. I guess I need to take a shower now, because I visit a dirty site that makes me laugh :(.
- FyreDank, on 10/12/2007, -27/+1It doesn'tmake it okay that Lowtax posts the screen name of the people whose artwork he steals. At the end of the day, he's still making money off of taking people's artwork without their knowledge or consent.
And of course you've never seen someone complain on the forums. Lowtax would ban them in a heart beat. - Handre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If they don't want their work on the frontpage (for some reason which is beyond my comprehension) they shouldn't post it in the forums, SMARTYPANTS!
- moralgriever, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"It doesn'tmake it okay that Lowtax posts the screen name of the people whose artwork he steals. At the end of the day, he's still making money off of taking people's artwork without their knowledge or consent.

Give me some evidence please. who do you know that has been acused of it? And tell me, how come if Lowtax is stealing the work, there is always an announce in the photoshop threads that say it will go to the phriday? And that the pictures chosen always have who made them? There is plenty of announcements, and all goons know that if they make a photoshop in a popular thread, there is a chance they will be used for the front page.
And of course Lowtax make money of his forums and site. They are his business, and all the members are aware that you must pay a one time fee to be a member. Nobody forces people to spend money, they do it on their own mind. I have only spent 10 dollars in 4 years there, and there are people who choose to spend more because they feel like it.
Now you are just giving me the feeling that you have been banned from the forums. I can see why, you are too dense. - trenchfoot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15HEY GUYS I AM FYREDANK
I AM A PERMABANNED USER WHO HAS IRRATIONAL HATRED OF LOWTAKKKS
I WAS PROBABLY BANNED EITHER FOR BEING A FURRY OR FOR CAUSING DRAMA - diafel, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1"If they don't want their work on the frontpage (for some reason which is beyond my comprehension) they shouldn't post it in the forums, SMARTYPANTS!"
Excellent argument. If wannabe pedophile ***** Shmorky didn't want his work stolen, he shouldn't have posted it on the internet, SMARTYPANTS!
So let me get this straight, Ebaum scours the internet for "teh funny", steals people's hard work and gets rich off it. Lowtax scours the forums for "teh funny", steals people's hard work and gets rich off it. Ebaum = bad. Lowtax = good. - moralgriever, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"Excellent argument. Let's see. Shmorky has said he did that furry on comision years ago (post made in the SA thread). The article in the encyclopedia dramatica reeks of hatred towards goons and Shmorky by asociation, so it's pretty biased and not that trustful. Ebaum doesn't ask for permision and takes stuff from everywhere, deletes any watermark it may have, and puts his. Lowtax uses the content of HIS FORUMS, made my goons that know their work may end up in the front page, and Loxtax always credits who made each image.
I fail to see any validity in your arguement here. What Todd and Ebaum do is gain profit without giving credit to the authors of the works used. I don't see how Lowtax falls into that category, as he does ask the goons for permision and he credits them. - diafel, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1So, by your logic, because Lowtax credits those he profits off of, he's in the clear? Quick, someone tell Todd Goldman to credit Shmorky, all will be forgiven.
- moralgriever, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yes, because Lowtax asks them first. The author can say yes or no, and that person is aware of what the image will be used for. Lowtax asks and if the author says yes, then he puts it on the front page. Now what Todd is doing, is ripping off art from others, altering it a bit, not asking for permission, and getting profit from the images. It is not only Shmorky whom he is doing that, but also Roman Dirge.
- Handre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Excellent argument. If wannabe pedophile ***** Shmorky didn't want his work stolen, he shouldn't have posted it on the internet, SMARTYPANTS!

You honestly can't see the difference between having your work displayed with credit on the frontpage of the forum you posted it on and having your work displayed without credit on a site you have NOTHING to do with? If so you are a dumb, worthless piece of *****.

- rapier8, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22 SA threads on Digg in 2 days, I think a certain site has a crush on the internet's favorite outhouse!
- MewtwoReturns, on 10/12/2007, -17/+2My God, I'm sick of all the eBaum bashing. Same going for this guy, even though I hadn't even heard of him until now.
Okay, they're douches. But they're douches who know who to steal from with the maximum possible profit and minimal possible chance of retribution. Think about it -- eBaum's World takes content from flash artists -- who are usually fairly young, and don't have the bankroll to put up a legal battle, or the know-how to get any money out of said theft. If EBW DOES have to take something down, it'll have been up for a couple weeks and already earned its hits (and thus, ad views and profit).
This dude stole from a webcomic. Unluckily for him, it was one that was widely recongized.
I laugh every time EBW snatches something and ends up not getting lashed back at legally for it.
Countdown to -50 diggs in 3...2...1...- pongjinn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Uh what? You admire them for being GOOD AT PLAGIARISM?
- moralgriever, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Yeah, because there have been people who have tried, but Ebaum can hire good lawyers. Let's admire a prick who screws with others like that.
- imnotgood1016, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0by -50 do you mean +30?
- FVZAColonel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You are really a piece of ***** with no morals what so ever. When people behave like you recommend in the real world, they get thrown in prison
- MewtwoReturns, on 10/12/2007, -12/+0pon, moral: Actually, yeah. As evil as it is, that's the business world apparently. Skirting the rules and manipulating the laws is how a good many people get ahead. Yes, I KNOW it's despicable. But he knows how to play the system, and I applaud him for that. Props to EBW, down with YTMND and SA, all that good stuff.
imnotgood: No, I definitely mean -50. Every time I post ANYTHING supporting a view like this, it gets dugg down or flamed on any board. Hell, I got banned from EBW forums once because a couple moderators thought I was being sarcastic, whereas I actually mean the stuff about why I think EBW is great.- moralgriever, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Hmmm, and have you ever thought that maybe, you know, after getting flamed everywhere for oyur views, maybe your views on the system are rather twisted?
- Handre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow you're a great man with a ton of morals
- MewtwoReturns, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0Yup, but that's not going to stop me from having them.
If everyone who had a view that was considered "outside the norm" just shut up and never said anything, I could think of many ways the world would be worse-off for it.- moralgriever, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Awwww, nice delusional excuse, keep telling yourself that and maybe one day it will become true in your tiny little mind :).How cute.
- slowdowns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You poor freethinking martyr. Your comments aren't buried because you're edgy or controversial, it's because you're a goddamn retard.
- hamstereater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Learn how to post in one parent thread. Also, shut up, *****.
- imnotgood1030, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Currse youuuuuu LOWTAXXXXXXX
- PopeGuilty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You mean LOWTAKKKS!
- imnotgood1040, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1What happened to those minus 50?
- imnotgood1044, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Digggggggggggggg
- rustedrazor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8He ripped some t-shirt-ideas from tshirthell.com as well, and made them all lame and censored.
- Slaaaaabs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Eat a dick Todd
- Executor89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, at least lawyers have a usefulness sometimes in life. Start calling.
- ximfinity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I see some other similarities in his work and others I've seen...

- helterskeletor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How can people like this live with themselves?
- theStevethe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5He completely traced it? What a loser.....
- RumAndCoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Completely traced it.
When I was in the 4th grade I really liked Garfield and would trace the comics, but I didn't turn around and try to sell them. He's a *****.
- RumAndCoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Completely traced it.
- sknight2112, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This Todd fellow seems like a bit of a *****....
- TexMurdockDDS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The fact that this guy has been quoted in interviews as saying "I'm just crazy" and "i don't watch cartoons/read comics" makes me want to spit in his face. Not only is he a blatant thief, but he's a talentless hack and a self-obsessed, smarmy scumbag to boot.
- milanesadepollo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh,please...sue this guy. That's the dumbest plagiarism i've seen.
