- bluezinc, on 04/25/2008, -0/+32It seems like a lot of colleges are just turning into degree mills.
I wonder if this is a bad thing.- WNW3, on 04/25/2008, -2/+14Degree mills or Sports training facilities. The University of Oregon is a great example of that. $200 million on a new basketball area while the education program languishes year after year.
- jtlight, on 04/25/2008, -1/+6Oregon is one of the few athletic programs in the US that is actually self-sufficient, and doesn't cost the general education fund a dime. Oregon has lots of problems, but the athletic department isn't one of them.
- bluezinc, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2And isn't that the problem?
Maybe I'm crazy, but I thought schools were for learning.
- bluezinc, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2And isn't that the problem?
- homerang, on 04/25/2008, -1/+5While emphasis on collegiate sports may seem like a bad thing sometimes, the sheer amount of revenue in can bring into the schools can be mind-blowing. Like jtlight was saying, look at how much money goes into the sports programs as well as how much money it makes before drawing conclusions from it.
- WNW3, on 04/28/2008, -1/+1I'd like to see the numbers on that.

- Spudster, on 04/25/2008, -2/+115Even if you go to a good University much of this video is still true.
- ProfessorFoo, on 04/25/2008, -12/+4Yeah some of it is... but the majority is not. At least here in Madison there are tons of good looking girls, most of the buildings are pretty good looking, you can't usually get away with playing games in class, the sports teams are overall pretty good, I've never heard of someone being failed because the professor didn't like them, it's easy as hell to find a party any day of the week, the RAs are mostly responsible (good or bad?), and most people stay here for the weekends. So actually pretty much none of it is true. You all must just go to ***** colleges (or none at all).
- LexisNexis, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2What the heck are you talking about, everything I heard about wisc was that everyone is a major pothead or drug user.
- ProfessorFoo, on 04/25/2008, -2/+1Well maybe not 'everything you have heard' about wisc is correct? If you have never went here you obviously wouldn't know. There are definitely some druggies ('potheads' mostly I guess) but whats wrong with that and when was that mentioned in the video (which is what I was referring to....)?
- Spudster, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3Even in good Universities professors will still hurt your mark if you disagree with them. I know many RA's that are lenient because they lack social skills and want people to think they are "cool." A lot of University architecture is still from the 1970's on most campus's and you also can't deny that many kids completely blow away the education their parents are working so hard to supply for them. So no, I would say this video reflects the life of University quite well.
- KibibyteBrain, on 04/25/2008, -1/+1Maybe professors of useless things like Liberal Arts of Humanities. Science and Engineering professors are likely to take notes assuming your argument is coherent, in an attempt to reach a new paper thesis at worst before you can publish. But seriously, dissent is more encouraged in sciences, maybe that says a lot about culture differences between different professions? Or maybe that experts in science and technology are more secure in their professional status as being beyond artificial or based in opinion...
- ProfessorFoo, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2Yeah I'm in engineering maybe it's different for liberal arts students. All my professors so far have been willing to admit it when they make mistakes.
- LexisNexis, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2What the heck are you talking about, everything I heard about wisc was that everyone is a major pothead or drug user.

- wphj, on 04/25/2008, -0/+38Haha especially the last guy. I think that ever time I see a commercial for a college.
- Charlesbian, on 04/25/2008, -0/+26The 1970's architecture observation is spot on. I got to UW-Madison, and our ads always show the new sexy part of the Chemistry building. Too bad its for the graduate students and not for the undergrads the ads aim to. The undergraduate part attached to it is basically a concrete box with windows.
The guy at the end is spot on too. He says what all of us always think when watching these commercials.
"If you went to a good school, they wouldn't need a commercial"- cwgannon, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1And that's not to mention the spiffy new addition to Grainger Hall that's for MBA students only.
Maybe they could show Humanities? Most all liberal arts-ish undergrad classes get put here.
http://www.madison.com/wsj/photo.php?image=/images ...- Charlesbian, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1yea, but when are they gonna make additions to buildings for students who wont make more than 100k a year? Thats why ill never see the Vilas hall rennovated....

- PATSCRU, on 04/25/2008, -33/+11Yeah, i tried emailing them suggesting that they change their name to "Re Appropriation of Funny Videos From Other Sites Humor" but i got no response.
- Spudster, on 04/25/2008, -2/+41Unlike other sites, College Humor DOES produce its own original comedy (such as this video), so I would say your comment is unfair.
- Llanowar, on 04/25/2008, -18/+6Why do I always see at least one person saying that on every college humor vid that appears on digg?
- DangerMouse9, on 04/25/2008, -9/+0Because they usually include a link to their own site, which looks like something an 87 year old ***** out after eating Taco Bell.
- Archaic1, on 04/25/2008, -8/+3because it's popular to hate what's popular
- TyCage, on 04/25/2008, -1/+9That's true. And I hate it.
- yohnstoppable, on 04/25/2008, -1/+6People who believe someone hates something they like "just because it is popular" are pretentious douchebags who can't stomach the fact that people have different tastes than them.

- noreaction, on 04/25/2008, -2/+16you should become an hero.
- Orion682, on 04/25/2008, -6/+6It's an internet meme you douche
- Joshuarr, on 04/25/2008, -7/+2Actually, for knowing that, YOU are the douche.
- oneoverzero, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2From the Oxford American Dictionary, slashes added for emphasis
USAGE The traditional rule about whether to use a or an before a word beginning with h is that if the h is sounded, a is the correct form ( : a hospital;: a hotel). But if the accent is on the second syllable ( : historic;: habitual), there is greater likelihood that, at least in speaking, 'an habitual' will sound more natural. One form is not more correct than the other, although some constructions may strike readers as pretentious or old-fashioned (///an heroic act///; an humanitarian).- acero47, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2Just a note, while the emphasis in heroic might be on the roh sound, the emphasis in hero is on the heer sound. So an is still wrong.
- AmazingAndrex, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1"'an habitual' will sound more natural." I find the opposite to be true.
- identitymatrix, on 04/25/2008, -5/+4Oh look, a grammar police officer in training.

- Shadowdev, on 04/25/2008, -9/+218Heheh.. I think my favorite part(s) is the fact people are randomly playing (Ultimate) Frisbee. What the hell is it with college and that game?? (Not complaining just wondering... Cause Ultimate Frisbee is really fun!)
- bluezinc, on 04/25/2008, -1/+47I don't get it... but I always see people playing it... on the quad, of course.
It's almost as obligatory as the freshmen hippie drum circle where they try to be different by pissing everyone off at night. - Spudster, on 04/25/2008, -3/+19It's a game to be active with that isn't much of a contact sport. You know, in College you have to be all academic"ee'' like that...
- spidoman, on 04/25/2008, -2/+21If it's not a contact sport you're doing it wrong.
- brownsound00, on 04/25/2008, -0/+6although it is mainly against the rules for pushing, there is still alot of contact in competitive ultimate.
btw, i'm in university, and the first time i played ultimate was in university.

- desqjockey, on 04/25/2008, -2/+1If you think ultimate is a contact sport you must not know what a "contact sport" is. Basketball: not a contact sport even though there is incidental contact. Hockey: contact sport.
- spidoman, on 04/25/2008, -2/+21If it's not a contact sport you're doing it wrong.
- ninerskeet, on 04/25/2008, -1/+11its funny 'cause its true... btw i play ultimate frisbee
- eaglered00, on 04/25/2008, -1/+20I think you just answered your own question
Ultimate Frisbee is really fun. Why does everyone play it? - SpykerSpeed, on 04/25/2008, -1/+42Fantasy Ultimate Frisbee is more fun cause you get to pick each team's players and not have to play it yourself. I hear there are some freshmen in Ohio State and Yale who are gonna shock everyone this season.
- DangerMouse9, on 04/25/2008, -1/+88It's a game where you make contacts for pot.
- pingster, on 04/25/2008, -1/+13Ultimate Frisbee is a growing sport. I actually play on a traveling Ultimate Frisbee team. My coach hopes to one day put it in the olympics. Laugh all you want, but its growing.
- TinternAbbot, on 04/25/2008, -5/+2buried for fagginess
- effward, on 04/26/2008, -1/+1It has actually been growing for a while now. My parents went to the Ultimate Frisbee World Championship in Scotland (in either '97 or '98), their team got 3rd.
- qwkredfox, on 04/25/2008, -2/+5Its Funny that a Blue Frisbee lands in the daffodils and the first guy throws it, but the second guy catches a white one... LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO,

- desqjockey, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3Yah I hope someone was fired for that.
- abid786, on 04/25/2008, -5/+2LOL.. College humor told me ultimate frisbee is gay http://www.collegehumor.com/article:1732778
Ultimate Frisbee is Pretty Gay by Jeff on June 02, 2007- ninerskeet, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2wow! that's the gayest article i've read
- IllBeBack, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1That was so poorly written that it is totally gay.
- Darkhacker, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1Heh, I'm in college and I like ultimate frisbee. Apparently I've been missing the after-game orgies, but they sound hot!
- digitalbuzz, on 04/25/2008, -0/+7Never made my afternoon classes because I had to navigate though at least three Ult Fris games..and take part.
- byrdgang, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2How many people will get the Seinfeld reference? Well done.
- bluezinc, on 04/25/2008, -1/+47I don't get it... but I always see people playing it... on the quad, of course.
- dunderballer, on 04/25/2008, -2/+35After prospecting for grad school, I am so sick of the nonsense schools put out. The claims made in marketing materials for most schools are either not fact-based or so generic that they could be said of most of their competitors.
- dunderballer, on 04/25/2008, -5/+371What's really unethical are the TV advertisements for community colleges offering programs for things like video game design and other pipedream careers that a community college wouldn't really prepare someone for. Community colleges are an awesome way to bolster skill sets, economically prepare to transfer to a 4 year school, or to learn a trade, but to exploit students passions by promising an unrealistically short career prep path for highly competitive job sectors is detestable.
- Jimgress, on 04/25/2008, -2/+243You gotta tighten up those graphics in level 3!
- CaptainDiggg, on 04/25/2008, -1/+74My Mom said I wouldn't get ANYWHERE with these games!
- hammburglar, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5yes i love how they act like video game designers just sit on their couch playing video games as their job. soooo true.........
- Spudster, on 04/25/2008, -0/+61Another job colleges do that with is forensic science (CSI). Sorry, but being a forensic scientist requires a masters degree in Biology with specialization in that field if you think you even stand a chance of getting hired.
- aywwts4, on 04/25/2008, -3/+135I don't think you understand, I watch a Lot of CSI, like a lot a lot.
I think you will reconsider now that you know my abilities.. - tzjung, on 04/25/2008, -14/+6Spudster, I'm not sure you understand the requirements to be a CSI. A 'CSI' is a crime scene investigator, which pretty much includes dusting for prints, collecting evidence and property, taking accurate photographs, and being able to reconstruct a crime scene. My wife is one, I should know. You are confusing CSI with people in the Forensic LABORATORIES who do DNA analysis.
Why don't you get your facts straight before you post huh? By the way..my wife has an undergrad in Anthropology and a Masters in Forensics, but all her co-workers only have associates degrees. Some are old Cops, who have transferred to the section. In fact....their Blood Spatter (that's right Spatter NOT Splatter) is an old cop who doesn't even have a degree but he's one of the best in the country.- brownsound00, on 04/25/2008, -0/+15he didn't say crime scene investigator. he said forensic scientist, aka the people in the forensic labs like you said.
he was just used the CSI in brackets to show how the colleges make it look like you are getting trained to be a forensic investigator from CSI
- brownsound00, on 04/25/2008, -0/+15he didn't say crime scene investigator. he said forensic scientist, aka the people in the forensic labs like you said.
- H0mez, on 04/25/2008, -1/+0Oh man we had so many people at my school who wanted to be crime scene people, then they would have to take bio courses and realized they were stupid
- aywwts4, on 04/25/2008, -3/+135I don't think you understand, I watch a Lot of CSI, like a lot a lot.
- MalkyMalc, on 04/25/2008, -0/+23You're right, that's by far the worst one. Almost as bad are the CSI-inspired psychology courses. Being a forensic psychologist takes a degree, a masters and a further few years of experience I think...
- manova, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Usually a PhD in clinical psychology and a few more years of experience.
- Pun1tive, on 04/25/2008, -1/+17I agree. I think the statistic that you have to look out for is the "98% employment rate!!!!". They don't mention that 99% of those are doing crap jobs with nothing to do with their qualifications.
- mojo31979, on 04/25/2008, -11/+2It's not an educational institutions responsibility to find you a job. If you can't get it yourself, you don't deserve it. Plain and simple.
- monroylobo, on 04/25/2008, -0/+10Actually, the accreditation of schools such as law schools can be taken away if enough people who graduate don't in fact enter the law profession. I imagine there are similar rules for the accreditation of other institutions.
- mojo31979, on 04/25/2008, -11/+2It's not an educational institutions responsibility to find you a job. If you can't get it yourself, you don't deserve it. Plain and simple.
- mojo31979, on 04/25/2008, -8/+32I've found almost the opposite is true. The first 2 years of my college life was a waste....helll even the 3rd year was pointless. Learning crap I would never use for a piece of paper that essentially means nothing to most employers. All a BA Degree shows is a commitment to mediocrity. Companies love to see people that will stick it out for something they don't enjoy doing, and are willing to be walked all over. There is NOTHING specialized about a bachelor's degree. BUT when I went back to school to a Community college, I got another degree, in half the time and now make more money and am happier doing it. And it also happens to be in Simulation and Game development. Honestly, unless you are prepared to go for a Masters or Doctorate save your time and money. That's ALL universities care about...money.
- peregrine, on 04/25/2008, -1/+6Yep most people will down you cause your discrediting their degrees. Next I will have some comment that make some seemingly great argument on why I am wrong. But still you paid thousands of dollars to go to a school, 40% of which you won't remember after finals just to be retrained in a corporate environment. Money well spent!
- brownsound00, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2Agreed, university is more about the contacts you make for jobs later...then the information you learn. It's also about just getting credited so everyone is standard in the same information (doctors, nurses, physiotherapists etc.)
- WNW3, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5"Yep most people will down you cause your discrediting their degrees" I upped him because he's right and most degrees are useless, including mine. All an English degree teaches you is how to ***** and mix drinks.
- quadvods, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3he won't be dugg down because people with degrees know this is true.
- pontiac, on 04/25/2008, -0/+13I totally agree. I'm one of those "lifers' who took about 7 years to graduate. I spent half that time switching degrees and taking random classes I found interesting alongside all my major requirements. I'm graduating in May now with a degree I really have zero interest in, but it took me till I was almost done with the stupid thing to figure that out and then I got talked into finishing by my adviser who said "Well at least this way you'll have a degree, come back and get your Masters in something you actually like." Which is fine, 'cept anything I want to get a Masters in is going so different it will require me to take all kinds of prereq classes so I'll basically end up getting a second Bachelors in something I actually give a crap about. The point in this sob story is that had I just started out at a CC I could have taken all the *****-off classes I wanted while I was figuring out what it was I wanted to do with my life and would have spent 1/4 the money and also people really don't ever seem to have (from my experience) expectations of people at a CC. It seems a lot more socially acceptable to just always be at a CC just "y'know taking classes" not "pursuing a degree". I feel like at a university you're expected to (and this may just be me here) finish something... or something... I don't know. I'm kinda bitter about the whole thing but ultimately I only have myself, and the system (damn you The Man!), to blame.
- lisaawesome, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2I'm going into year 7 of my college experience with nothing but a now totally unrelated AAS I got right out of high school. I should graduate in about a year and a half and since I have invested so much time and money I figure I should stick it out until I get that stupid piece of paper. But if I could go talk to myself back when I first was getting into the college life I would tell myself to just go to a vo-tech and acquire the skills for a trade (not game design. lol). I think about how I would probably have a real career now rather than still working crappy jobs that fit in between school hoping that I'll even be able to get a good job when I do graduate. I could still take classes on the side with a good career but I wouldn't be struggling to pay bills and have a mountain of student loans. I wouldn't be 22 and wondering when the hell my life is really gonna start :
- Kohaxx, on 04/25/2008, -0/+4In the end experience is almost all that matters, for a lot of the big name jobs the degree is just the prerequisite to get in the door, after that they'll still throw you out because you didn't have the experience or specific skill sets they wanted. Better to learn what you'll use and make contacts than to work for a piece of paper.
- digitalbuzz, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2I shoulda went to a CC for the first years of college. Foundation/requirements at a major Uni. is a waste of time and money. As a freshman, not sure what I really wanted to major in but fun. I finally finished Eng 102 and Art History 102 when I was a 6th year senior.
- Kohaxx, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1The golden formula I found was: goto CC, nail your courses because they're easier, apply for scholarships because unlike the high school level scholarships literally lie around doing nothing and are really easy to get, scholarships pay or help pay for University when you transfer.
I actually wish I had finished my physics while still at CC, depending on the University you go to it can be a lot harder to do well in prereqs at a State Insitution than a CC.
- priestess355, on 04/25/2008, -2/+2Two bachelor degrees here, two masters on the way, plus a graduate diploma (grad associates). Phd next maybe? Having done this a while now, I can advise you should only do college if you committed to learning what you are there to learn. As for 1st year classes at American schools? Waste of time, my colleges don't even consider them for credit if you transfer (I'm in Australia)... do AP as much as you can in High School and take CC for the rest, assuming your prospective college will allow it... FOUR YEARS for a basic undergraduate degree?! They must be dreaming.
- quadvods, on 04/25/2008, -0/+4isn't it time you got a job?
- slipperyslope, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1As a senior about to graduate, I submit that usefulness of college becomes increasingly negatively linear by year (I didn't take math in college)
- peregrine, on 04/25/2008, -1/+6Yep most people will down you cause your discrediting their degrees. Next I will have some comment that make some seemingly great argument on why I am wrong. - kaykfrink, on 04/25/2008, -0/+11Lately I've been noticing Devry's ads for their Website Design program, which seems all well in good, until they say that if you ask for free information they will also send you some game demos. Game demos? What do they have to do with web design? I feel insulted that Devry thinks they can try to bribe me into a program that costs tens of thousands of dollars with some cheap game demos.
- greenvortex, on 04/25/2008, -15/+4I still feel guilty about how much of a goof-off I was at college. Very few 18-year-olds are mature enough to handle the sudden responsibility of going away to a 4-year school, especially now when kids seem more spoiled, lazy, and self-entitled than ever. I went to a private university, where tuition was 10 times that of a good state school. Even if I had really tried, though, I don't think I could have acquired an education that was 10x better. What I did get was a piece of paper that says "Stanford" on it. It comes in handy when applying for a job. Much more so than what I actually learned there.
- monroylobo, on 04/25/2008, -1/+21Oh, I see what you did there....start off with a good comment then take advantage of that to brag about how you wasted your privilege of going to Stanford.
- Lewie, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2Lucky for you. If you are ever in the position to hire a guy from a school with "Valley" in the name, for the love of god hire him.
- anstice85, on 04/25/2008, -0/+10It's going to take me about eight years to graduate from college with a Bachelor's because I've changed my major so many times and have had a full-time, demanding job the entire time. However, taking classes I've actually been interested in has been worth it and so has getting all of the job experience. And, being in IT, it kind of sucks having a lot of the programmers and network admins getting paid three times more than me when they graduated with a GED and never went to college. It's ALL about hands-on experience.
I'll probably be taking random ass college classes until I die.- stayhale, on 04/25/2008, -0/+8I was in the same boat a few years ago - nine years to complete college while nerd friends were making money. I was especially jealous of my friend Patrick, because he skipped college and went straight from high school to well-paid specialty niche programming. Then the bubble burst in '99 and Pat was laid off. Got a good severance so he mostly played games for a year, then spent another year looking for jobs that weren't there for his specialty niche, then his specialty was no longer special and he basically had no skills to market. He's working in a phone center now and going to college, with a kid and another one coming. The degree really means something, it means you were willing to work for something sort of hard and a little abstract and you made and stuck to some kind of plan to reach a goal that takes years to accomplish. Congratulations.
- guyincognitoo, on 04/25/2008, -1/+7College shows that you can be taught. Since you won't use most of what you learned, all employers care about is if they can teach you what you need to know.

- jessehadden, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3I feel the same way about the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.
- fool13, on 04/25/2008, -2/+4People are passionate about video games? I don't think so. There is something to be said about personal responsibility, I spent months figuring out where I wanted to apply to before finally making a decision. College isn't something you think about in 5 seconds, it's a long committment. If you're only 18 and you see that ad hopefully you talk to your parents about it who will clue you in on the real deal. I'm sorry but if you sit around playing video games all day and think you are going to do it at a job then your outta luck. People need to make smart decisions, it's like buying something off TV infomercials, they should be taken with a grain of salt.
- lisaawesome, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2And what you want to do for a career at 18 isn't necessarily what you want to do at 20 so people change schools or majors but it doesn't necessarily reflect upon how much thought they put into the commitment. You can spend all the time in the world thinking about what you want to do before you actually go to college and it still may not work out for you. Actually going to college changes things. Also, what if your parents don't know the "real deal"? How many parents have any clue about the gaming industry or the difficulties of it? Parents aren't all knowing gurus and most 18 year olds take what their parents say with a grain of salt anyway!
- GhostyBoy, on 04/25/2008, -0/+4Getting into video game design with no background whatsoever?
That's gotta be the steepest learning curve ever, getting steeper all the time. Oh you really like video games and play them all the time? Sure. Go for it. - lisaawesome, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3You took the words out of my mouth DunderBaller. I'll admit I got suckered into a program like that when I was 16/17. It was a good, fun experience but it in no way prepared any of us for the job market. The only student out of our class that got a job pertaining to game design came into the program knowing how to do to most of what we we're being taught so he was able to expand and improve while everyone else was working on the basics. Now I see ads all the time for game design programs at little community colleges and vo-techs and they all promise you'll have no problem getting your dream job after you graduate. I think if people want to take those courses for their own fun that's great but the school should not promote the idea that their training will get you a job in that field because it absolutely will not if that's your entire game design background. In fact I had a fellow student in my little program that had a 4-year degree from Full Sail and couldn't get a job but he really was holding onto that dream so he was back in yet another game design program. At least I quickly realized what I had been told was a bunch of bunk and moved on from there. I bet that other dude is still trying after all these years.
- donttaseme, on 04/25/2008, -0/+14Yea, when graduating with a "game degree" you will probably end up as the detested tester. A job you can pick up out of high school without college credit. Salaries are capped and career path is short with high churn rate of employees (you will be tagged as a tester throughout your career). Pick up a C/C++ and get a CS degree. Focus on games on the side. You'll need a heavy dose of 3d math, go ahead and get a book and implement the 3d graphics algorithms. There are also game-physics(faster because of approximations than real physics) algos you should be familiar with. Designers of games tool-of-choice is a spreadsheet. Good to have math, statistics, and probability in your belt. You balance game mechanics: (timings, rates, meters, attributes). Also you need to have a good set of game knowledge as in mechanics that other games use that make it unique and fun. Senior designers usually push lots of work out to their competent assistant junior designers. Of course you also should pick up internship ASAP and grab those positions and experience points. Level design is usually done by junior designers and knowing scripting languages will help. Artists need to hone their specialty(3d models, animation, textures, rigging, environment, character design...). Best quality only in you portfolios by avoiding mediocre and crap. Work on something everyday and learn your tools- you live and die by those tools. Efficient quality goes to an extreme when competing for an art design positions, especially. Bring a coherent portfolio that ties together. Hone what you've been practicing and flaunt it showing quality over quantity and remember to make it stupidly easy to contact you(e-mail,phone,website,fax). Quality include: proportions are correct, perspective, right polygon count, quad only models,UV textured, extremely high details on drawn concepts art(5-10 minute drawings). Everyone(in the industry) wants to be a designer 1st, artist 2nd, programmer 3rd. Software Engineers get paid the most. Heavy competition with first two. Comfortable living with the testers but don't get too comfortable because as I said there is a level cap that will suck when you need to pay off student loans. These are the traits to compete in the industry. Do what you want with it. I'm getting tired of games in general. Good luck finding a company who specializes in not doing death-marches (the bane of the software industry/look it up) and are innovators. Go ahead and ask DIGG who the innovators are, they know where you should work.
- deadbeatsaint, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2You must be in the industry or close to someone who is, because I am myself, and frankly I say you hit it dead on-balls accurately. I've been the head of game design for a few (AAA) titles before (for Gameboy, etc.) and I started out as a programmer (granted I slipped back into programming.. yes it does pay _alot_ more) and game design really isn't all its cracked up to be. Especially when you are working on a project that is based on a license and and a finicky licensor(sp?) (your original ideas will constantly get shot down and don't you DARE think about going off the beaten path with the universe the game setting is based on).
I have yet to work on something that matches the scale of an MMO, which has teams of GDs working together. I imagine that would be the best scenario, but basically I would actually recommend you don't even bother trying to aspire becoming a GD.
That's my two cents.

- ats314, on 04/25/2008, -0/+7I'm slightly embarrassed to say I gave Devry's GSP program a try. I wasn't your average high school retard that couldn't go to a real college. I was taking classes while working and already had a B.S. in Finance. The school was every bit as much of a joke as people here imagine it is. I attended classed and worked part time in the advising office to save on tuition. I don't know which was more repulsive. The teaching techniques or the recruiting techniques. Needless to say, Devry es no bueno.

- asurroca, on 04/25/2008, -0/+8I'm sure they won't
- odganarb, on 04/26/2008, -7/+1"ur" is not a word. I realize idiots use it to replace the words "you are" in sentences, because of the aural similarities between "you" and "u", and "are" and "r". But the word you were looking for, "your" is not the same as "you're", the contraction for "you are". I cannot fathom why currently 36 people have dugg you up.
- Spottswood, on 04/26/2008, -0/+2stfu isn't a word either but in this case it's more than appropriate, jackass

- Pun1tive, on 04/25/2008, -10/+6What gets me is when I see job ads here in the UK that say: "must have a 2:1 from a red brick university". WTF is a red brick university? I've never see any red bricks at any university...
- CressCrowbits, on 04/25/2008, -0/+12It means an 'old school' university, i.e. a respectable one that's been around for more than 20 years, unlike the millions of crap ones that popped up after the government decided to allow anyone to call themselves a university.
If you went to Oxbridge or York or places like that you're fine. If you went to Grimsby Metropolitan University you're probably out of luck.- Plotinus, on 04/25/2008, -1/+5No. A red brick does NOT include Oxbridge or Durham, it is specifically the Universities created by the Wilson govt in the 1960's including Manchester, Hull, etc. So the gist of your statement was partially correct just factually inaccurate ^^
- CressCrowbits, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2I was unaware of this, cheers. Although I guess an employer who comes up with stuff like that probably doesn't understand it either if they would wish to exclude oxbridge graduates!
- Pun1tive, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3I was being sarcastic. I should have perhaps made it more obvious with sarcasm. But I figured people would be smart enough to work it out for themselves.
- CressCrowbits, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1I would assume most comments on digg were meant to be sarcastic or deliberately ironic if I thought most people on here were intelligent.

- redaphid, on 04/25/2008, -2/+0I'm a pretty big nerd, but I managed to have a hot girlfriend for 3 years. The trick is to not be the pansy most guys are around hot women. She even had out dishware picked out. The moral of the story: date ugly girls. They're more thankful for it. Also: never graduate college.
- skcoder, on 04/28/2008, -1/+0I'm sorry to hear about that. Girls are bitches, stay single and don't get emotionally attached is all I can say. The second you get emotionally attached is when they will walk all over you.

- greenvortex, on 04/25/2008, -2/+22Don't worry, if you apply your geek skills right in the real world you'll become a good earner and then hot girls will date you. If you are in more of a hurry, start lifting weights. In 6 months, you'll be the guy walking around shirtless getting dates. You'll feel so good about yourself that your confidence will win girls over. (If you can't beat the douchebags, join 'em.)
- tomjm5000, on 04/25/2008, -1/+8I'll be honest... walking down the street I rarely see too many middle-aged nerds with hot wives. I think this might just be something that we tell ourselves to feel better.
- crazyhorse13, on 04/25/2008, -1/+3You have to remember that nerds of that era aren't quite the same as now. They didn't have video games and computers to suck their lives away. Basically, they are the ones with jobs in engineering, chemistry, and such.
- minorthreat, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2I got my degree 3 years ago and been in the real world since.. Being a computer science major and being a software engineer is a world of difference, but yea I got a pretty hot girlfriend now.

- Rizmaster, on 04/25/2008, -2/+23It takes them 10 years to realize that the douchebags are probably not going to be rich or powerful if in any way successful, then at about 27 or 28 they realize they need to find a geek who will take care of them while they're still kind of attractive.
Do yourself a favor, avoid the fading beauties who were total skanks in high school and college. Get rich enough to bone the skanks in high schools/colleges.- psykiv, on 04/25/2008, -3/+23High schools? Why don't you take a seat over there.

- skcoder, on 04/27/2008, -1/+0I couldn't agree more with your post.
- Pikachelsea, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Yeah, because if a girl dates you because you're rich instead of because you're attractive, you're so much less of a douchebag than her last boyfriend. And because it's so impossible and rare for someone to be both attractive and rich.
Smart hot women can take care of themselves and don't have to marry some ugly dork just to make a living, but I guess if you're into morons then you're all set.- skcoder, on 05/02/2008, -1/+0I've read your posts and I like you're well thought arguments. However, I strongly disagree with pretty much everything you've written. I've even dugg your comments.
Smart hot women can take care of themselves...
I disagree. Hot women get use to being spoon fed their life to them. How many smart, hot women do you see majoring in very tough things like engineering or mathematics? I don't see many, and I'm a mathematics major. Yes, they can take care of themselves to an extent, but not enough to stay happy. In general, hot women will eventually come to the realization that they need someone more financially stable then they are and that they aren't the hottest piece of ass on the street anymore, thus they find some rich guy willing to take them in in their last years of fading beauty. Meanwhile, the ***** frat guys got the best of them while they were in their prime years while the guy who worked hard gets 'sloppy seconds.'

- rinote, on 04/25/2008, -1/+22No woman can resist the siren call of popped collars.
- Pikachelsea, on 04/26/2008, -1/+6Simple, really:
a) Because you whine and complain on Digg all day and sound like a baby, which will repel every woman with taste within a 10 mile radius.
b) Because you are acting like a hypocrite, complaining about no hot women will date you and their priorities suck, yet all you care about is dating someone for their appearance. If you're so special and not shallow, go date someone who's an ugly geek like you. Why are you so hung up on "hot" girls and why would you want to date a girl who has a history of dating douchebags? Oh right, because you have a double standard and think that only men have the right to date someone they're attracted to.- makeminemanda, on 04/26/2008, -0/+4This might possibly be the best comment I've ever read on digg. I can understand why that statement may be true in terms of community colleges or ITT tech or something, but I've seen ads for pretty good colleges too. - bot001220, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1You're doin' it wrong.
- slipperyslope, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1A few general suggestions:
-If you use User Agent Switcher extension in FF, make sure you set it to your default browser
-reinstall Flash (or update it if you think you have an older version)
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.c ...
-reinstall/update your browser
-if none of that works, stick to watching pictures
Zindrix - do you have problems with any other video sites or just CH? if it's just CH would you mind giving a little more detail about your system setup (operating system, browser version, flash version, anything wacky you might have installed).
Thanks, it would be really helpful!
