      And I only know this fancy terminology because by sheer coincidence I had to read the wikipedia article on .csv files for my CS class.

      • hhmmmm, on 10/13/2008, -0/+1The backslash is the most commonly used character to escape another character. Since it has special meaning, you have to use it to escape itself to get the actual printable character. That said... I don't know why they aren't just taken literally in the comments

        The comments are stored in the database, and in order to prevent people from trying to inject database calls (like DELETE * FROM `users`) in their comments, which would trash the site, Digg has to escape certain dangerous characters with the backslash character.
        Then when the comments are actually displayed, the backslashes used to escape need to be removed so that the comments look right. So if digg's code accidentally contains more stripslashes() than addslashes() they'll remove more backslashes than they have to.
        You'll see something similar on pirate bay where if someone puts an apostrophe in their title you could see several backslashes in front of it.
