Parents need to understand that "good kids" really are good kids and leave them the hell alone! You don't turn from Mother Theresa to Paris Hilton in a night. It's the parents who neglect their kids or raise them in a house where they're afraid and desperate that bad things happen.

She didn't immediately punish the kid or tell his parents, she sought more information before she did anything. An alternative would have been talking to the kid about it. It would have resulted in an embarrassing conversation, sure, but to see her godson writing about what she suspected was drugs and to ignore it because she thought the kid was a "perfect little angel" would have terrible if it really was drugs.
I have an aunt who thinks her kids are perfect and would never do anything wrong but on the first day I met her 12 year old son, he turned to me and started bragging about going on porn sites. If you don't have any conversations with your kid about stuff he shouldn't get in to, he's going to do it. - kalleanka, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2Dude, the mother in that letter did everything right.
She did not make a big issue about it in front of his son, instead she researched it in books and when that did not help she contacted the news paper as a last resort for professional help understanding if this was related to drugs or not.
She found out what it meant and nothing bad came out of it.
And for the record. Yes, "good teens" can end up doing "bad stuff". This parent did just what is expected from a mother who find a note of that sort written by her son.
