- TheSprunk, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3I think what's more obvious yet is that he either A) doesn't care about what shakespeare called it, B) Was using a term more clearly and widely synonymous with his intended meaning, or C) Both.
Fool may be more "correct" but Joker would make more sense to people. Remember, Average intelligence isn't very intelligent, and then there's the 49% who are even dumber than that.

Politics has been like reality TV since the 90's, and probably well before, but I just don't remember it. Of course, Stewart and Colbert have taken it up a notch, but in a positive way. Humor and stinging reality in one hour. I love it. - polalion, on 09/26/2008, -0/+5Be a hero. Do it yourself.
- PrinceMissile, on 09/26/2008, -7/+2I think you mean an hero.

- xSledgewick, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Why is gwaggy getting dugg down? Politics is no joke, he's right. Do we really want it to become as ridiculously perceived as our little reality shows? That's the reason most people may be voting for McCain. *zing!*
Seriously though, come on people...
- p1eiades, on 09/25/2008, -6/+618Those two make the difference between laughing and crying about this campaign.
- Zenham, on 09/26/2008, -3/+71I dunno, McCain by himself makes me both laugh and cry.
Laughter, when he claims he's being truthful.
Crying, when I realize a lot of idiots think he's a good presidential choice.- Oea420, on 09/26/2008, -2/+19Exactly! I don't understand his supporters and I encounter them every day!
And when you try to bring up any point at all, they dismiss you as an extreme liberal socialist etc and respond with the most ridiculous crap - sittered, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3Cookies are a good Presidential Choice.
- Jeremyz0r, on 09/26/2008, -1/+15"Do you know about the minister he's had for the last 10+ years?! I'm definitely voting for McCain, that poor PoW." ..Err where do you get your news? "From my TV, CNN. You can shuv your internet and computers up your ass."
I have awesome relatives :| - insomniac8400, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3CNN has turned on McCain though. Fox news is the only network still in the tank for McCain.
- TunaFishGangsta, on 09/26/2008, -3/+3"that Obama doesn't like McCain because the old man can't use a computer. Well, I can't use a computer either nor can I read or write. Damn it. McCain should be President. If he dies from old age then Palin should be President. If she dies then her dog should be President. At least I'm smart as a dog so I could identify with him, see?"
- Zuwxiv, on 09/27/2008, -1/+1Oea420 clearly understands what the straw man fallacy is.
- Oea420, on 09/26/2008, -2/+19Exactly! I don't understand his supporters and I encounter them every day!
- ryanonfire, on 09/26/2008, -0/+24They keep me sane.
- Spawn2105, on 09/26/2008, -0/+31I think Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are going to seriously miss this election when its gone. Never before have they had it sooo easy to find material!
They help keep me sane, and they help me get the news without all the ***** that the cable networks put you through.- fugularity, on 09/26/2008, -0/+23Everyone always says things like this, but don't kid yourself, politics in America has always and will always bring up an unlimited wellspring of issues to satirize.
- geodebug, on 09/26/2008, -1/+10Not if McCain wins, then the laughter will keep rolling for another depressing 4-8 years.
- DiggMasterJ, on 09/26/2008, -0/+11I was going to laugh until they reminded me how bad things are, now I just cry. :.-(
- mochaman, on 09/26/2008, -0/+11I'm glad they have changed the political discourse in this country. There was a time when Fox and Drudge and the whole right wing media controlled the news cycle and MSM used to be like sheep and follow.
- Zenham, on 09/26/2008, -3/+71I dunno, McCain by himself makes me both laugh and cry.
- Chonoon, on 09/25/2008, -38/+8That is very disturbing. Funny, But disturbing.
- TVarmy, on 09/26/2008, -1/+28It's a reference to a New Yorker cover showing Barack Obama and his wife dressed like that, doing a "terrorist fist bump." It was clearly meant as satire, but it stirred up unnecessary controversy. Personally, I don't think it was that great a cover, but the media totally misinterpreted it.
- boombye, on 09/26/2008, -1/+8Also in case you didn't know about the "terrorist fist bump" reference, it's due to a claim by a Fox news reporter who was sacked and moved to a later time or something, I don't know, but haven't seen her around since. She tried to claim that people who bump fists or do respect knuckles are really performing a terrorist fist jab. It was so ridiculous, even for Fox news, that she got sacked from her regular time schedule.. But yeah, I'm not sure what happened to her since.
- fugularity, on 09/26/2008, -1/+5I think she got a terrorist fist jab to the roast beef curtains.
- Chonoon, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3... What a dumbass. I do it with friends all the time.
- boombye, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3The wallpaper of my cell phone is the image here: http://omgrespekknuckles.ytmnd.com/
The image is a capture from one of the Sealab 2021 episodes.
But yeah, I wonder if she did any damage and got people believing that ***** still. - rpgmaker, on 09/26/2008, -1/+1I think she is still employed by Fox but is not in front of the cameras. It wasn't her fault to say that, she was just reading the teleprompter, just like most anchors in fox news. Apparently that time slot is having some troubles within the channel, first they replaced her with some other blond girl show but then canceled that blond girl show too.
- pintomp3, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3it's funny but hilarious!
- monkyboyrr, on 09/26/2008, -8/+352Stewart and Colbert make this world bearable. After a long day at work/school there's nothing like "Your Moment of Zen," "The Word, and "Indecision'08." The fact that they and their writers find the best video clips to make every politician that has screwed America over look like hypocritical small minded fowl (which they are) is the most satisfying part.
I've seen the filming of "The Daily Show" once, and it was amazing how down to earth John is, and how appreciative he is of his and Colbert's "fanbase."
This is probably the most epic era of Comedy Central's running.
Oh, and anyone who doesn't like them - you're getting on the "Threat Down" board.- AchaIemoipas, on 09/26/2008, -0/+20"Moral passion without entertainment is propaganda, and entertainment without moral passion is television."
- Rita Mae Brown. - coasterswim, on 09/26/2008, -0/+41There is no "Threat Down" board. There are "On Notice" and "Dead to Me" boards.
- MrCrumbles, on 09/26/2008, -0/+10That's it coasterswim, you're on notice
- hiimcliff, on 09/26/2008, -4/+2if colbert, stewart, and maher weren't around i would have went on a rampage a lot time ago.
- 9bpm9, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1Stewart is mostly spin with his clips. You aren't getting the whole story and that makes it funny.
- AchaIemoipas, on 09/26/2008, -0/+20"Moral passion without entertainment is propaganda, and entertainment without moral passion is television."
- tomg025, on 09/26/2008, -3/+41it's a satire!

- UnstableMind, on 09/26/2008, -11/+1Satire or not, it's the blatant ***** truth.
- hiimcliff, on 09/26/2008, -0/+5its a shame that small minded people like you get a vote. its called research you douche. do some.
- UnstableMind, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1I was of course speaking about what Stewart and Colbert report on...Damn, guess I need to read what I submit next time.
- LauV, on 09/26/2008, -2/+1thank you captain obvious
- spencen66, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1the best kind of tire!
- hmphargh, on 09/26/2008, -0/+21of a satire
- oo7evan, on 09/26/2008, -2/+99I noticed they didn't put the American flag in the fire like the original drawn magazine cover. Probably EW's decision.
- tk0680, on 09/26/2008, -8/+96Because Americans, for some reason I still can't fathom, can't handle the burning of a patterned bit of cloth, even in satire.
- KillaJazzBass, on 09/26/2008, -68/+9When a cloth carries as much symbolism, love and veneration regardless of political ideology.
- tk0680, on 09/26/2008, -4/+68Surely the ideologies (such as freedom of speech/expression) are more important than their symbols?
- Tanktunker, on 09/26/2008, -4/+44@KillaJazzBass,
And people who don't wear flag lapel pins are unpatriotic and obviously unfit to be president, right? - kingmanic, on 09/26/2008, -0/+11tk0680: Apparently not to KillaJazzBass. It's better to pay lip service to symbols and thrash the actual result of those ideologies. At least for all the idiots who care about it as they almost unilaterally vote against their own personal liberties.
- bat-21, on 09/26/2008, -2/+2Most American flags these days are made out of artificial fabric. They don't burn; they melt. If they wanted a flag that could burn, they would have to special order one. It would cost more than EW was willing to spend and it probably wouldn't have been finished in time.
- doiveo, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Could be difficult to get an American flag to burn cooperatively for an hour long photoshoot.
- tidu, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1I want this magazine cover on my wall
- tk0680, on 09/26/2008, -8/+96Because Americans, for some reason I still can't fathom, can't handle the burning of a patterned bit of cloth, even in satire.
- JohnTheRevel, on 09/26/2008, -11/+132I get my news from Jon Stewart/ Stephen Colbert!
- MattFid, on 09/26/2008, -1/+38The Daily Show is THE most important show on TV.
- btschul, on 09/26/2008, -24/+2It's got as much of a liberal bias as every other news show.
- Brad324, on 09/26/2008, -2/+28when you're wrong, yes, it would seem as though everyone else is biased. Republicans are like the fat ugly chick that thinks she's sexy. Doesn't matter what anyone else says, she's dead sexy and she knows it.
- btschul, on 09/26/2008, -27/+2I'm not a Republican, actually. And are you going to refute that for the most part every news network (excluding Fox, of course) has done nothing but criticize McCain and figuratively suck Obama's *****? Have you heard a single thing positive about McCain on the daily show?
- bam359, on 09/26/2008, -2/+17Reality has a liberal bias.
There are so many more poor people, then rich people. The problem is they don't all vote. - btschul, on 09/26/2008, -20/+3So those rich people don't deserve their hard earned money? The government should take it from them and give it to the poor people? That's what we call "childish and greedy". "He has, I want. Make him give it to me."
- gobbstopp, on 09/26/2008, -3/+9face it my friend. most rich people are handed their money by their family. some work hard, yes, they should feel entitled. most poor people work harder than anyone else, and our country, run by 'conservatives' - a laughable description of the party's MO - is too strapped for resources and employment benefits are wallowing in their hard-knock misery. that's as simple as you can boil it down. stop pretending you know what's going on because your party tells you 'how it is'.
- btschul, on 09/26/2008, -11/+2I believe I said in a few comments up that I am not a Republican. And it really doesn't matter where rich people get their money, it is THEIR MONEY. Are you saying that if my uncle dies and leaves me a million dollars, I don't deserve that money? I wasn't handed anything. I got a job and saved money while I was in high school and I bought a car, and now I am working to put myself through college. I plan on eventually getting a job that pays 100k a year. Are you saying that I don't deserve that money? The government should take it and give it to the 20 year old single mother down the street that dropped out of high school and had 4 kids she can't afford because she spends half of every paycheck on cigarettes and lotto tickets? That's what charity is for.
- Maxwell1234, on 09/26/2008, -4/+4Of course The Daily Show is a liberal satire show. That's the whole premise and has allways beeen so of course they are going to bash McCain.
The only thing that makes a strong difference is who owns the outlet. Ex. Rupert Murdoch - Fox, and lets not forget that Microsoft and GE both donated to GW Bush's campaign... who do you think owns MSNBC? - Brad324, on 09/26/2008, -2/+10The problem is that a large chunk of the democrat's voter base are educated, intellectual people, while a large chunk of the republican party's userbase is uneducated people. Democrats can get away with being more honest and intellectual, while the uneducated don't trust them smart folk. The uneducated can be pandered to by thinking of their guy as someone they'd like to have a beer with. This is *****. The media's job is to filter through the *****. If one side is clearly lying, it's their job to report it as such. Unfortunately, in this election, lying is all McCain can do to have a shot at winning this thing. And yes, you could get cynical and say "all politicians lie", but when you have one side actually advertising bold faced lies about the opponent's position (e.g. that they will raise taxes, when in fact they plan on doing the opposite), then the media should report it as such. They should feel no need to "balance this out" by digging up some dishonest remark on the other party. There are varying degrees of honesty. To put your own side's spin on an issue is expected, to ignore facts altogether is *****.
A fair media doesn't simply spew the talking points of each side, a fair media has to filter through the *****. Otherwise we'd have (as Jon Stewart would say) WWE wrestling, rather than actual discussion or debate. - MattFid, on 09/26/2008, -1/+6The Republican agenda benefits so few that their only campaign strategy is to scare the American people that the other guy will raise their taxes, make everyone gay, kill babies and surrender to the terrorists. That's how they get the poor, uneducated vote. In reality the Republican agenda is "Keep the wealthy from paying taxes at all costs."
- onidraky, on 09/26/2008, -1/+7@btschul
Before he sold his soul to lobbyists and his party Jon Stewart had a lot of respect for John McCain. He had him on the show several times. - Raptor007, on 09/26/2008, -1/+1@onidraky
Heh, I almost buried you because I thought you were saying Jon Stewart sold his soul to lobbyists. Watch that ambiguity. :¬) - NightVortez, on 09/26/2008, -2/+1Oh God, this is why I'm starting to hate digg, there is no right or wrong in politics, there are just different ideologies which you might disagree with, which is why it's good to have a program introducing all of them, and unhealthy to watch one sided show, that's how the media carves your opinion to begin with.
- PhairOh, on 09/26/2008, -5/+27If you're serious about getting informed, you can't just get your news from one source. You need to get news from all available sources. You need to watch Fox News for the right wing bias and you need to watch MSNBC for the left wing bias. You need to read the NYTimes, the WSJ, Time, Newsweek, AP, and everything else. Then make your own opinions based on your own beliefs.
Then watch Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert for a good laugh, because holy crap they are funny.- spj36, on 09/26/2008, -0/+15You're wrong as the us media it's nothing but a circle jerk circus. You need to read foreign news to figure out what's going on in this country. That and the daily show.
- ldailey06, on 09/26/2008, -0/+14I'd suggest taking NOTHING from the cable news channels
- blitz718, on 09/26/2008, -2/+5Boy would i like to have the free time you have
- TheSprunk, on 09/26/2008, -2/+2Foreign news isn't biased?
Just about any large Mainstream News source is biased. Social News networking is probably the best thing we got, because you can go through the comments, see all the different views on it, read the different links people post. It's your left wing, right wing, dead center, foreign, pro and anti whatever source of news all in one place. Subscribe to a few of these networks and you're probably more informed than 90% of everyone else. - hiimcliff, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1your spot on my good man (Except of course about msnbc). keith is just honest.
- TheWorm, on 09/26/2008, -3/+10You shouldn't do that. Factual as they are, their first purpose is still, to be a comedy show. The daily show is the best opinion show.
- ATLien74, on 09/26/2008, -1/+21The Best ***** News Team on the Planet!
- opticwind, on 09/26/2008, -4/+3I hope not cause I remember after the DS got one of it's first Grammy's, Stewart's speech said that anyone who got their news soley from the show was an idiot.
- DeskFlyer, on 09/26/2008, -0/+5If you think about it, The Daily Show is far funnier if you get your news from the real news sources. ;)
- katagana, on 09/26/2008, -0/+4Yeah true, it really makes "real" news hilarious... and then again it makes you sad because the state the media is in!
- groonk, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1who doesn't?!
- Regoolian, on 09/26/2008, -8/+31Aha, now the truth is out. Obviously those two left wing nutjobs are a secret cell wanting to give verbal jihad on an unsuspecting public. If only we listened to the good and honest Faux News and their Repubby cohorts. :S
/sarcasm- walshgopher, on 09/26/2008, -0/+8How would we have known it was sarcasm if you didn't tell us?
- EmperorPsiblade, on 09/26/2008, -0/+7Isn't it disturbing that some people actually think like that?
- TheSprunk, on 09/26/2008, -6/+1Yeah, my mom thinks that way. Talk about extreme conservative. She thinks Bush is doing a good job. It sickens me.
She tells me "You're free to vote for whoever, but you damn well better vote for McCain" so everytime it comes up I just say "yeah, im voting for mccain" and leave it at that. A blatant lie, at best, but it helps avoid a bunch of unnecessary *****. Oh, and ***** Obama too.
- TheSprunk, on 09/26/2008, -6/+1Yeah, my mom thinks that way. Talk about extreme conservative. She thinks Bush is doing a good job. It sickens me.
- paradexes, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2The sad part is there are people who are so clueless that they would have taken what he said at face value. :( So the sarcasm thing was necessary.
- LeggoMyEgo, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1not with faux news in there
- sdellboy, on 09/26/2008, -6/+88Can't someone sponsor these guys to stand for President & VP in 4 years time? I live in Australia but man, I'd send money to see that...
- uncertainty, on 09/26/2008, -4/+129Well deserved Emmys.
- DustyMagnum, on 09/26/2008, -0/+7Yeah, but still...

- fugularity, on 09/26/2008, -5/+51Seriously, everyone would vote for a Stewart/Colbert 2012 ticket, right? I mean, really, is there any doubt?
- benotago, on 09/26/2008, -7/+15No. Pretty sure everyone isn't liberal?
- fugularity, on 09/26/2008, -1/+25You forget how many fundies believe Colbert is for real...
- odigity, on 09/26/2008, -8/+3Dude. Stewart and Colbert are libertarians.
(And Drew Carey)
(And Penn & Teller)
(yes, we are all awesome) - sdellboy, on 09/26/2008, -2/+12Hehe...Penn & Teller for 2012.
Watch! As they make the whole of Wall Street...vanish! - JeddHampton, on 09/26/2008, -1/+12I'd like to see those VP debates.
"And your response, Teller."
"..."
"And your time is up." - PrinceMissile, on 09/26/2008, -0/+4@sdellboy Pretty sure Bush did a great job of that already.
- driver3108, on 09/26/2008, -14/+0I might vote for Colbert/Stewart, but definitely not the other way around.
- secaedelcielo, on 09/26/2008, -0/+6Why wouldn't you want Stewart as president?
- necromancer, on 09/26/2008, -2/+8I think Stewart is actually the smarter of the two (they are both bright guys)... although Colbert might be more charismatic. Of course the republicans have shown intelligence isnt really an issue when it comes to the presidency.
- shadygrove, on 09/26/2008, -0/+6i'd vote either stewart OR colbert for president. on the subject of which of the two is "smarter": while there is no definitive way to quantify intelligence, i'd say colbert is definitely the *quicker* of the two. he's as fast with his wit as robin williams at the peak of his stand-up career. but, y'know, stewart is no slouch where the interview zingers are concerned, he's just less of a charicature than stephen so he tries to make his guests feel "welcome" no matter how loony, i mean republican, they sound. and for that reason i have a few friends who think he sucks up to the guests a bit too much.
- benotago, on 09/26/2008, -7/+15No. Pretty sure everyone isn't liberal?
- pwncake, on 09/26/2008, -6/+12I literally lol'led for about 30 secs. That says a lot about the photo.

- mikesbaker, on 09/26/2008, -1/+2you just laughed out loud out loud - i hope you didn't strain anything doing that

Hmm, would you go for Stewart/Colbert 2012 or Colbert/Stewart 2012?- lovek, on 09/26/2008, -0/+28Stewart/Colbert 2012/2016
Colbert/Stewart 2020/2024- Primatelord, on 09/26/2008, -1/+2It's actually against the constitution for someone who was president for 2 terms to be vice president afterwards. This is entirely to prevent the chance of someone being president for more than 8 years.
- wahan, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3Actually, you can be president for 10 years.
- DrummerAndrew, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Wahan is totally correct. You can assume up to two years of the Presidency by being CP, and then go on to be elected for two full terms. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty-second_Amendme ...

- calum187, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1If you've got Sky, FX (Channel 165) has the Colbert Report on at 11:00 (not totally sure on the time). I still think that More4 should pick it up, it would fit in quite well. Even though we don't really have those pundit shows that Colbert is satirising here in Britain, we can still appreciate the jokes and indeed Colbert himself.
The Daily Show is one of the best things on TV. - jomateix, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3colbertnation.com , can be viewed worlwide, I assume. I see it every morning from Spain

- diskit, on 09/26/2008, -0/+14Stewart / Colbert '08!
- opticwind, on 09/26/2008, -10/+5I hate when people spin a comedy show and say it's "the only credible news show/source on tv" or some such nonsense. Stewart himself says on his show several times that his show is NOT the news and blatantly lies for the sake of a parody. If you're really getting your news from the DS and CR, you're kindof an idiot.
- CSheikh, on 09/26/2008, -1/+5The reason that it is a credible news show (in comparison to say Bill O'Reilly, Lou Dobbs, Olbermann and all the other folk out there) is that they make intelligent critiques of the News, and how others report the News, and present it in parody. They will make outlandish lies that people know are false for the sake of comparison, and they mix it in with actual News for the point of comparison. The audience knows what is fake and what is real (expect for those times when what is real seems to idiotic to be true, like the Alabama congressman that wanted the 10 commandments to be displayed in Congress, but couldn't name all 10 himself).
The kinds of people that watch Daily Show and Colbert Report don't just get their news from them, as if they did they would not understand half of the jokes that are made on the shows.
For people of lower intelligence that don't understand the jokes they make it is idiotic to watch it because the overall message will be way above their head. But for those of us that like intelligent humor, their shows are a must see!
I am not sure of your intelligence level, but this skit should be easy enough for you to understand:
http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?vide ...
If the link doesn't work just google "Daily show Bush vs. Bush". - OpaqueMurdock, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2@CSheikh
While I agree with your post, I think those of us that feel this way should be cautious about putting too much stock in the information we get from these shows. I watched the clip you presented critically and realized that it may be a questionable example. Much of it was out of context as the video was taken from him talking about two different (but related) subjects. It makes a point... but not as strong of a point as it may seem at first in my opinion.
We have to remember that these shows FIRST mission is to entertain us. Informing us is secondary if not tertiary perhaps because they do have a political leaning that they make no attempt to hide. It just happens to be a leaning that you and I agree with. : )
From the point of view of someone without those leanings the discrepancies would be a lot more obvious than the truthful stinging zingers that we see. But they don't have to check facts and make sure that everything is 100% right... its comedy! So we need to remember that, hold it in our minds as we watch and laugh. They are smart guys, (the stars and writers) brilliant really... that doesn't mean they are right all the time or even try to be.
The first example you pointed out, the Alabama congressman that wanted the 10 commandments to be displayed in Congress, but couldn't name all 10 himself, is a CLASSIC example of how these shows work. I will never forget learning that we have lawmakers that want to force their morality on us... yet they don't even fully understand those rules themselves!
I think If you could ask Jon and Steven how seriously we should take them, they would point to the way they have always presented themselves to us...
"The place were more people get their news than probably should"
"The best ***** news team ever!"
Jon has referred to his show as "fake news" in several interviews I have seen.
They know who they are, and they try really hard to remind us of it so that we don't make them into something else.- opticwind, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1Thank you for articulating my point much better than I ever could have.
