- ElderBieler, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2There is a huge difference in between the potential of our country, the values she stands for, the freedoms and opportunities she provides, and her leaders who make bad decisions (not just this administration, but throughout all time). Don't confuse the two.
Making swipes at the fighting men and women, and not showing gratitude for being part of this country is by definition ungratitude.
All those things you listed, while some are exaggerated and some are real have nothing to do with our country. It's a function and reflection of her leadership. You can be grateful for being part of the most powerful and generous country in the world while criticizing her leadership but don't confuse the two.

It's obviously a re-enlistment ceremony and when a person in the military re-enlists they choose who the officer will be that administers the oath (usually someone they respect) and they also have a choice of location, what they will be wearing (anything goes), and what other's will be wearing (within reason).

The saga was influenced by the works of Joseph Campbell which centered on a common mythos in human cultures, and the central themes such as the totalitarian empire are common throughout history. Moreover, if you're just looking at the style of the Stormtrooper armor, it was far more inspired by Japanese samurai than anything out of Nazi Germany. I have many (probably too many) books on the art and design of the Star Wars movies to back that up.
