The Colbert Report Nails Medical Marijuana
ccinsider.comedycentral.com — Has The Colbert Report gone to pot? Are they a bunch of dopes? Have they been eating corn beef hash? (Trust me, my marijuana puns are hilarious if you're stoned. Or retarded.) What I'm trying to say is, Stephen covered medical marijuana last night and it was hilarious. Highly hilarious.

- dagnome1984, on 08/12/2008, -2/+11I seriously doubt Obama or Barr for that matter would change anything about the law. Their stances on the issue don't sound genuine.
- willster580, on 08/13/2008, -0/+6That's definitely not the case. Barr used to support the War on Drugs and openly admits it. Now he supports the legalization of marijuana.
- sulthernao, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2Obama would probably stop the federal vs. state inconsistency on medical marijuana, but I doubt you expect more than that.

- Tugging, on 08/12/2008, -89/+4Making something legal does not make it right.
- kingjafee, on 08/12/2008, -2/+57Yeah people how dare a extremely ill cancer patient use medical marijuana to soothe the extreme nausea they experience when getting chemotherapy!!!
How dare they eat!!!
Even if it is legal, if God wanted them to eat after chemo he would have given the power to doctors to create or use something to help with the nausea....- MyCorona, on 08/13/2008, -2/+1You won't get very far in this life if you look to "god" to provide help. You'd think he would not give you cancer to begin with rather than give "the power to doctors to create or use something to help with the nausea". God has no place in a discussion on medical marijuana, or most anywhere else for that matter.
- justsayknow, on 08/12/2008, -2/+74Making something illegal doesn't make it wrong. People have been using medical marijuana for thousands of years. Today, pharmaceutical companies are scrambling to develop new cannabinoid-based medicines, proving that the patients have been right all along.

- illinoise89, on 08/12/2008, -1/+17You are correct. And making something illegal does not make it wrong. Using medical marijuana to treat certain illnesses is the right thing to do.
- TremorX, on 08/12/2008, -1/+25Inversely, making something illegal does not make it wrong.

- phyr3x, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1As long as they are not doing it in public and are not affecting other people with their medical necessity. MM is one of the best available painkillers in certain circumstances, such as the MM user in this video. Chronic pain is very difficult to treat and sometimes the cause is unknown. MM is also less addicting than other comparable painkiller, such as percocet or oxycodone, which can have terrible side effects. I agree that there are illegitimate reason that some people get MM licenses/cards, but the benefits far outweigh the doubts.
Plus, marijuana was made illegal because the conservatives in the country made everyone think that pot was the cause of crime and villany and all the bad stuff that happens in the U.S. at a time when everyone was gullible enough to believe all of this crap. It is less dangerous to the general population than tobacco and it's potency is on par with alcohol. Basically, get with the times, the High Times, that is! - Corrosionx, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1@phyr3x: What's do you have against me doing it recreationally and in public? You think I should be thrown in jail for that, like I'm actually hurting someone?
The only people hurting someone here would be the police arresting me, because their silly littles rules are much more important to them than my freedom.
I don't care what the laws are, good people disobey bad laws.

I wish the prime of my life were the 1940's and 50's.- rotarychainsaw, on 08/12/2008, -2/+30Drugs were around then too.
- imasuperDOTcom, on 08/12/2008, -23/+2I didn't they say weren't.
I was implying that in those days they weren't elevated to a culture status.
You know, since I'm a pretty big fan of the constitution and 'liberty' in general, despite my conservative tendancies... I could almost be swayed with the whole "Pot is less dangerous than alcohol, and has a lot of economic benefits so just legalize it and forget about it" argumen.t
Unfortunately, these damn drug hippies that make it their lifes work to smoke the doobie just piss me off too much. If you guys would just stop being so damn stupid about it, conservatives like me might actually buy into your whole argument, and let you have your way. - bdawg123, on 08/12/2008, -2/+14"Unfortunately, these damn drug hippies that make it their lifes work to smoke the doobie..."
Generalize much? - BlueLove775, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1How will things ever change if "hippies" didn't stand up for what they believe in? I guess Lincoln was a "hippie" because he challenged the constitution by abolishing slavery. Open your eyes instead of being a puppet in a game you don't know how to play.

- Andrwmorph, on 08/12/2008, -1/+11The first half of the 40s sucked some major balls though...
- cli006, on 08/12/2008, -0/+10The government spoon fed American citizens ***** propaganda and people had no choice but to believe it. The US government back then controlled every form of news people had access to. Do you today believe the old government tapes that portray young adults taking a hit and becoming suicidal rapists?
Welcome to the modern age where technology allows people to network and share real ideas, not the ones the government wants us to believe in. - belebih, on 08/12/2008, -1/+9You should go a wee bit before that (20's-30's) and read about alcohol prohibition. The same ***** that kept alcohol illegal at that time is pretty much what's keeping marijuana illegal now. Eventually most people realized it was ***** and it was repealed. Now, considering alcohol has a more severe negative impact on society than marijuana (and no benefits at all, as opposed to medical marijuana), it's hopefully just a matter of time until it's legalized as well.
People just need to pull the stick out of their asses and get educated about the issue, cause definitely the people that oppose legalization are pretty much just ignorant of the facts... either that or they have something to gain from keeping it illegal... ahem. - illinoise89, on 08/12/2008, -0/+9"Damn drug hippies". You sound like my grandpa. In case you were wondering, through the early 20th century it was common for Americans to use opium and other drugs to treat illnesses. Drugs have been around for a long, long time. Intoxicants will always be a part of any culture as much as art, food or religion. Who are you to say what deserves to be a part of a culture? And how many people are really stoners for life? I think you portray pot use as being a much bigger problem than it is.
- DebbieKat, on 08/12/2008, -1/+4Funny. Are you saying the US government DOESN'T control all forms of news today? I think it's almost worse now than ever. Now news is just infotainment. As Randi Rhodes says: "The news has been canceled."
- rowjimmy, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2it's not so much that the govt controls the news, as it is that big business *is* the news & the govt.
- sanguinekane, on 08/12/2008, -0/+10Hate to break it to you, but pot had a culture associated with it in the 40s and 50s as well. Ever heard of Jazz and the Beat Generation?
Cannabis has always had a culture associated with it because it has (almost) always been a part of human society in one way or another. - tech42er, on 08/13/2008, -0/+11You're a pathetic little wannabe authoritarian bitch because you think people should have rights based on whether or not you like them. Go ***** yourself; our rights are inalienable and as long as we're not harming others, you have no basis to throw in jail. For the record, I don't smoke (tobacco or marijuana) but I sure as hell support those who are exercising their rights by doing so.
- phyr3x, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2Amen (not in a religious sense), brutha!
- phyr3x, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1If the prime of your life was then, you would likely die in the war than be hurt now in any way by a medical marijuana user.

- tech42er, on 08/13/2008, -0/+4http://norml.org
The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws should have all that information. - tcsucks, on 08/13/2008, -2/+4It will never be legal because you can grow it yourself. There's no way for the Federal Government to make money off of it.
Pot is not like brewing beer. It's a ***** plant and it grows like a weed (hence the ***** name). They are very easy to grow. Water + sunlight + seed + soil = marijuana. The only reason people grow it indoors is because they don't want people tearing through their gardens; or because the natural climate isn't ideal for it. If marijuana became legal, you could grow it in the ***** herb planters you hung from your kitchen window.
Keep dreaming, pot heads. No one is going to buy from a dispensary once it becomes legal.- hajimemashite, on 08/13/2008, -0/+15same thing could be said about fruits and vegetables.
i mean, who would go to the grocery store to buy tomatoes when you can just plant them inside of your house? Water + Sunlight + seed+ soil = Tomatoes right? And yet, every time when i go to the grocery store, i still see tomatoes on sale. I wonder why they keep doing that? People surely aren't buying them right? - sajorojas, on 08/13/2008, -0/+7^ listen to this man
- macsox, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3Also, people brew their own beer.
- Mpwns, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2dispensary's would still make money its the dealers who buy from them that will lose out since they are the middle man. also its not like you have around 15 strains to choose from when your growing for your self.
- wonderbriefs, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1Um, growing good potent pot is not that easy. You can tend to your crops like they are your children, and still manage to screw them up to the point that they barely get you buzzed. Not that I would know or anything.

- Tyrghast, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3Oh ye ignorant one, cocaine in the form which it is used does not occur naturally, and if you assume that 'smoking' is the only thing marijuana is useful for than you need to really reevaluate your knowledge of the plant. You also might try inhaling once in awhile, it will relax you far better than any other drug and your only side effect will be Domino's pizza.

- DubYaSee, on 08/12/2008, -3/+18While I applaud the Colbert Report's effort to paint the "War on Drugs" as a wasteful exercise in tyranny, the use of "stoner" humor allows the very serious points the satire makes to be marginalized as drug induced nonsense.
While the economy, war in Iraq and Afghanistan (soon to be elsewhere), health care, and energy costs get top billing in this election cycle... the perpetual "War on Drugs" continues to deny many Americans the liberty of their birth right. The "War on Drugs" is a war on Americans by their government. The "War on Drugs" is serious tyranny folks... don't allow yourself to be numbed to the injustice of the "War on Drugs" just because it is so common place. Fight for liberty... resist the "War on Drugs". Work for liberty and equal justice.- Spudster, on 08/12/2008, -1/+2The best way to convince people the drug war is wrong is by making them realize that the best approach is harm reduction. The principled "liberty" approach will not work. People simply refuse to accept it.
Drug use is not good, but jailing those who use and supply it to others is not the solution either. We need a regulated system that reduces the harm and realizes drug use is not a criminal matter, but a medical one.- StickWST, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3But I wouldn't package psychedelics like marijuana in with all those "dangerous" drugs.
Obviously it isn't good for you, but it's an easy to control activity. - tech42er, on 08/13/2008, -1/+2It's neither. It's an individual choice and should be completely legal. I understand people might not accept the "liberty" approach but don't make this into a medical issue either.
- personalj, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2It's a medical issue when it affects those around you, it is not safe to drive drunk, it is not safe to drive high, it's not good when you show up to the emergency room after you've overdosed on something with no insurance because you have no job and now tax payers must pay for you.
- Spudster, on 08/13/2008, -2/+1Note I think I should replace "drug use" with "drug abuse" with what I wrote. Responsible drug use is one aspect of the drug war that has suffered. However, the war on drugs has done nothing to assist drug abusers either, who would do much better off with a harm reduction approach.
Like marijuana, tax it, regulate, and move the money into addiction treatment and education programs. With harder drugs, provide it to addicts at a reasonable price so they can move on with their lives (this will work with heroin, but probably not meth). - personalj, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1Provide it to addicts? There would still be a large drug trade for the harder stuff, as only addicts would be able to get a small amount at a time, non-addicts would still want it and wouldn't be able to buy it.
- StickWST, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3But I wouldn't package psychedelics like marijuana in with all those "dangerous" drugs.

http://www.leap.cc/cms/index.php - jshooter1377, on 08/12/2008, -1/+13Marijuana is better than any other mind-altering substance out there (including alcohol). I bet no one has ever heard of a raging pothead or a marijuana related murder.
Marijuana isn't legal because the government hasn't found a way they can tax it or put it securely on the market where they know people won't be able to get it anywhere else but from them.- dizturbd2, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1Exactly.
- robopuppy, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1Government hasn't made it legal because they have far more addictive drugs lining their pockets. If marijuana was legalized, why wouldn't you just go to the store to buy it? I don't anyone that distills their own alcohol or grows their own tobacco because you can just walk down the street and get it.
- kidjesus, on 08/13/2008, -1/+1But unlike alcohol, which has to be distilled, and tobacco, which has to be cured, growing marijuana is as easy as growing tomatoes. I would *never* make my own alcohol, 'cause the process is too time-consuming and too complicated, but if pot became legal tomorrow? You can bet your ass I'd go out and buy a hydroponic setup & seeds later that afternoon. You know, once I'm done getting high and playing video games.
- nonfatmilk, on 08/12/2008, -0/+11"One may well ask: 'How can you advocate breaking some laws and obeying others?' The answer lies in the fact that there are two types of laws: just and unjust. I would be the first to advocate obeying just laws. One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws"
- MLK JR.
I completely agree with him. If he was going into work blazed out of his mind and used medicinal marijuana as an excuse, terminating him would be more reasonable. The fact that he just had THC in his urine (duh, he's a medicinal marijuana user), and was terminated solely because of that is incredibly unjust.
I think that even if you enjoy recreationally using marijuana, as long as you are going to work sober on time, doing all your work and performing well. It shouldn't matter if you prefer to light up in your free time to relax and let loose after a long day of work.
Legalize!- tech42er, on 08/13/2008, -1/+3If a company does not want to hire someone who uses marijuana, even medicinally, that's their business. The real problem is when people are being JAILED because they're consuming a plant the government doesn't like.

- Okinsley, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2haha thats hararious
- ryan69969, on 08/13/2008, -0/+6Many conservative-minded folks (typically Republicans) often accuse the courts of being "activist." However, the Supreme Court really had to liberally stretch the Commerce Clause in order to grant federal authorities power to interfere with California's medical marijuana system--a system by which medical marijuana is produced and used within California's state borders. It really was a role-reversal for the Court--notably for the oft-conservative J. Scalia.
- dizturbd2, on 08/13/2008, -1/+12I'd rather drive with a bunch of potheads on the freeway then a road full of drunks. Sure I might miss my exit and spend forever in the corner store deciding what munchies I want, but I still know what I'm doing, and I wont be running head-on into a minivan on the way.
- personalj, on 08/13/2008, -2/+4Driving experiments show that marijuana affects a wide range of skills needed for safe driving -- thinking and reflexes are slowed, making it hard for drivers to respond to sudden, unexpected events. Also, a driver's ability to "track" (stay in lane) through curves, to brake quickly, and to maintain speed and the proper distance between cars is affected. Research shows that these skills are impaired for at least 4-6 hours after smoking a single marijuana cigarette, long after the "high" is gone. If a person drinks alcohol, along with using marijuana, the risk of an accident greatly increases. Marijuana presents a definite danger on the road.
I'd prefer you were driving neither drunk or high.- bmdubya, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2While I do prefer driving neither drunk or high, if I had my pick, it would be high. From the countless times that I have driven high, I haven't done anything that would make a cop pull me over. But driving drunk is just stupid. You are a lot less aware what is going on when you are drunk than when you are stoned,
- Metasquares, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2@bmdubya: If you were a responsible driver, you wouldn't be driving under either circumstance.
- theadvenger, on 08/13/2008, -0/+4True, both are bad drivers, but at least with the guy on weed if he gets into an accident, he is only going 5mph.
- personalj, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1Driving over cautiously causes accidents as well, I see it all the time in Florida, elderly drivers who can't see and drive 20 under the speed limit. If you drive drunk or high, you need go to jail.
- brad3378, on 08/16/2008, -0/+2I'll support your right to smoke weed,
but ***** you if you think I'll support any form of impaired driving
(e.g. drunk, stoned, sleepy, female, etc)
