- amirman, on 01/15/2008, -0/+20"copyright claim by Church of Scientology International" i always knew it was a commercial enterprise.
- chaosium, on 01/15/2008, -0/+14What do you expect, they copyright their "religious documents" to control the spread of information.
Religions should not be allowed to copyright their upper documents for fear of losing tax-exempt status.
Of course, they all shouldn't really have it to begin with, but that's another argument.
- chaosium, on 01/15/2008, -0/+14What do you expect, they copyright their "religious documents" to control the spread of information.
- Aharoni, on 01/15/2008, -0/+4Actually, the tune is played in full in the end, so I guess its just brainwashing technique

- DeathHamster, on 01/15/2008, -6/+2I thought the music was great, but then I noticed that my PDA was plugged in and playing the Wall of Voodoo cover of Ring of Fire. (Then it shuffled to Laurie Anderson's Language is a Virus. So random, so true.)

- lazyrussian, on 01/15/2008, -1/+2I smell Trust Fund and other incentives. How else do they get celebrities to join? Pay the celebrities who endorse them (Tome Cruise's acting skils are really coming in handy).
Just an idea...- chaosium, on 01/15/2008, -1/+9Nah, it's the Michael Jackson syndrome. ***** childhood, probably raised in hollywood without proper parenting, and being grown-up children when they get older, having all the money in the world and not knowing what to do with their life, or how to be "happy" like the people who have to struggle more.
- SuperWinner, on 01/15/2008, -0/+16This guy is obviously struggling to make sense of his own beliefs, sounds like he is trying to justify them to himself.
- dkkicks, on 01/15/2008, -0/+40I think Miss Teen South Carolina made more sense.
- hexydes, on 01/15/2008, -0/+14You know, say what you want, but at least she was trying to go somewhere. Where that somewhere was...I'm not sure. The point is, what Tom said was just a string of verbs tied together, occasionally punctuated with a "PSH!" or "BOOM!" I think in a total of ten minutes of talking, he didn't say one thing...
- conna, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1yep. fast forward to any point or back and it sounds like the same thing over and over.

- aDJsavedmylife, on 01/15/2008, -0/+44Has anyone noticed how alot of Scientologists have a certain look and manner about them. Some of his mannerisms and the way he talks reminds me of the guy who followed the BBC reporter in that recently documentary.
- Markpdotcom, on 01/15/2008, -1/+28Check out his body language... hands covering his mouth, touching his nose, all negative signs, signs of lie's. Its almost as if he doesn't believe what he's saying!
- DeathHamster, on 01/15/2008, -0/+8Tommy Davis was trying and doing a bad job of imitating Tom Cruise. And Tom Cruise is probably picking it up from David Miscavige, the Glorious Leader of Scientology. That's the gradient of Scientology's insanity, shallow to deep end, with Tom's nose just out of the water.
Don't make waves.
- RoddyZ, on 01/15/2008, -2/+66Here's what's different.. this from a former Scientologist...
While I was a Scientologist, at any points where I would have a thought negatively or critically about a church executive, the organization or the techniques used in Scientology, I would have to squash these thoughts since if I shared them I would be subject to expensive auditing or other disciplinary actions or projects. This is another aspect of the way Scientology controls the thoughts of its constituents. You are trained to only allow certain thoughts or it will cost you time, money and your pride since you will be punished for thinking thoughts that the organization does not want you to think. For example, you are considered and labeled a criminal if you are caught not "keeping Scientology working" and many people were continually indoctrinated into that concept (including myself) by being forced to take a "Keeping Scientology Working" course under threat of being kicked out.- bsmang, on 01/15/2008, -11/+16I'm curious, if you were really a Scientologist, and you aren't anymore, then what are you now? Was Scientology enough to let you see religion for what it really is, or did you move on to another?
- dlown77, on 01/15/2008, -0/+31I don't think he intended to be misleading, but RoddyZ copied/pasted that from "The Affidavit of Roxanne Friend." It's here:
http://www.xenu-directory.net/documents/friend1991 ... - cawpin, on 01/15/2008, -1/+13Also, Scientology is not a religion in any way.
- monkeyvoodoo, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2religion: the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power
cult: 1. a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object. 2. a relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister
I'd say they fall under both definitions. What I find interesting after looking it up, is that most religions can easily fall under the definition of "cult". Or at least the particular way in which some people practice them. Belief and worship vs. veneration and devotion...

- writeman, on 01/15/2008, -23/+2And how is this any different from some forms of Christianity?
- bbtweb, on 01/15/2008, -10/+21hmm let's see. There is proof that Jesus was crucified through tangible Roman records. Whether you believe in him or not is not the point. The man still existed and his death can be proven. Nothing, and I mean nothing can be proven in Scientology.
Not to mention, real Christians don't threaten to kick people out or put people through a "remedial" course. There are a hundred more differences but hopefully this gets you started.- tHePeOPle, on 01/15/2008, -1/+17Though encouraged to give money to the church, you don't have to give them anything. There's only one book, and many places will just give it to you. Oh, and usually Christian churches don't sue people into financial ruin and public humiliation.
- samdu, on 01/15/2008, -1/+10Some sects of Christianity do practice ex-communication.
- MeatBiProduct, on 01/15/2008, -0/+8most christians would be happy if their biggest member was spreading the word by video, they wouldn't pull the word off youtube, its a ***** cult with cult members and Tom Cruise is their leader. This video puts the writing on the wall.
- Viral, on 01/16/2008, -2/+6"There is proof that Jesus was crucified through tangible Roman records."
"The man still existed and his death can be proven."
Really? What records? How has his death been proven? Honestly, I want to know. Where is this proof you speak of? - cococooky, on 01/16/2008, -6/+3There is no proof, you are full of *****.
- blunted, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2Theres nothing tangible about them.
Never ceases to amaze me the rubbish people believe..
- chaosium, on 01/15/2008, -0/+11Christianity doesn't copyright and hide their religious documents, requiring hundreds of thousands of dollars to acheieve "illumination". Tithing is nothing compared to the MLM of Scientology.

- Septimus, on 01/15/2008, -26/+13Sounds normal for a so called religion. (religion = cult always)
- charlie55, on 01/15/2008, -18/+9exactly. everyone out there who is religious or spiritual or whatever, you are all just as insane as tom cruise.
- stonewaljacksn, on 01/15/2008, -1/+11i can only hope that was sarcastic lol.
...because u just said everyone who doesnt think the same as you on the religion topic is insane.- psyon, on 01/15/2008, -10/+4Isn't the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over and over again, while expecting a different outcome? Organized religions do that at least.
- charlie55, on 01/16/2008, -3/+1there is only only one way to consider religion. you either have faith iin things without reason or you do not. all religions are the same in that you have faith in something stupid and pointless. you catholics and jews are just as nutty as tom cruise. you cannot prove tom cruise wrong any more than you can prove your own religion right. both of you have thrown reason out the windown in favor of fantasy.
so you are correct. either you agree with me about religion, or you are a lunatic. because to agree with me is to accept reality in favor of fantasy. there is no evidence for vishnu or god or whatever tom cruise believes. all of them are nonsense, equally supported by reality.
- stonewaljacksn, on 01/15/2008, -1/+11i can only hope that was sarcastic lol.

- MRintheKeys, on 01/15/2008, -1/+10Tom Cruise babbles crazy about everything. Why should Scientology be any different.
- chaosium, on 01/15/2008, -4/+5He's crazy BECAUSE of scientology. It's the cause, not the symptom/
- rebotfc, on 01/15/2008, -1/+5I just realized that music was there seriously, I thought it was a spoof compilation but the whole thing was straight.
Unbelievable. - calon9, on 01/15/2008, -1/+6Scary thing is, that wasn't even an interview. It was hidden camera footage of Tom talking to Suri right after she was born. You gotta start em young.
- loveandrockets, on 01/15/2008, -0/+13I read an article recently that said Tom and his wife's baby was seen as the second coming of L Ron Hubbard in some Scientology circles. (Just like Stan in South Park.)
Also, when Tom got to OT III, he went kind of crazy--finding out that it is all about space aliens and such. But the leader, Tom Miscavidge, calmed him down and kept him going. He is now an OT VIII. Which means he is immortal and can control objects. How's that workin' for ya Tom? - omnithought, on 01/15/2008, -0/+6You're being glib!

Anytime they blink, fidget, move a muscle they fail and have to start over again. These TRs can go on for hours. That's why Scientologists have that crazy stare.

while a search on scientology has about 800 less negative stories http://digg.com/search?section=all&s=scientology
not one single post in this thread says christians are better than scientologists, the person who brought it up said why do we always bash scientology and give other religions a free pass, but as you can see this is a ***** question. all religions are wrong, but just because we mention one, doesn't mean we are saying any others are better or worse. - LokitheComplex, on 01/15/2008, -0/+9Yes it can be used as a money making exercise. - duckfighter, on 01/15/2008, -23/+11A good point. I don't see this as any worse than being a Christian or being a Muslim etc. Religion comes from a need to believe in something greater than yourself. The difference between religion, is what "popped up" from the imagination. Their beliefs don't seem much weirder, than a man walking on water, and even resurrecting. Anyone being highly religious laughing at Scientology is the greater fool.

- KillerJ59J, on 01/15/2008, -1/+48Where to begin? Their belief system was taken from a series of science fiction books? They are a new religion that tries to practice brutality found in older religions, though they should know better? They brain wash their members and _FORCE_ them to pay fees(to unlock higher ways into the church, of course)? They don't believe in medicine so the offspring of Scientologists may get neglected if they need special care(eg. autism, scizophreblahblahablah(sp))? And they try as hard as they can to stop information about their cult getting out, but it fails.
- Nitesmoke, on 01/15/2008, -1/+26Probably because this religion was invented around 50 years ago. Most people believe their religions because they are very old and have been passed down for generations. I'm not religious at all, but if i was i would go with one thats been around awhile. Also, Christians don't sue everyone thats says anything negative about them. Go ahead and publicly say something bad about Scientology and watch how fast they slap your ass with ten million lawsuit. Another reason is Scientology insists that if your family or friends are not Scientologists you must break off all contact. One more reason is they want all your money, not the 10% tithing mentioned in the Bible.
- scallon, on 01/15/2008, -10/+1Mormons don't like it when one associates with non-Mormons, but the world isn't bashing them.

If it was him acting crazy because of any religion we would talk *****. If you don't believe christians take alot of ***** on Digg and other sites, you must be new here. Theres only one religious people that get a free pass on Digg, Muslims, any negative article on them is full of "christians are worse" threads. All religions are fair game in public discourse, scientology seems to be the only ones who think they're above it and have the right to sue anyone who mentions them negatively.

- and386, on 01/15/2008, -1/+32Scientology is really weird around the edges i.e.
1) All scientlogy knowledge is copyrighted. One can't quote any of their books, talks ... unless one wants to be sued by the church of scientology. Actually this makes it very very difficult to criticize or use fair judgment towards scientology. Their "copyright" on their Holy book was enforced systematically and sucessfully in court.
2) I you were to be a scientologist you'd have to make "engrams" or some kind of psycho-therapy sessions every now and then. Ofcourse they keep all those personal data about you and never fail to use them to black-mail you into shutting your mouth if you ever think about turning your back on scientology.
3) Scientlogy sounds and looks like a cult. Even though they prone not to be one, many governments (including Germany) consider them as a cult or 'dangerous' cult and banned them from their country.
Bottom line, it's easy to fine 100 other reasons like that. I was very disapointed by Scientology. Being a big sci-fi fan I used to find this "religion"/"cult" very appealing. And on the other hand, Scientology is really there to help drug addicts when government fails them. Actually the biggest issue with them is their greed. They are full of greed and power. A very bad combo, but a very common one nowadays.
p.s. : sorry if my english is weird, this isn't my language.- Norina, on 01/15/2008, -0/+17Your English is fine. And I'm glad Germany banned them. Gives me a moment of pride in my government.

This at least helps explain the what constitutes a cult (from both a Christian perspective and then from a broader perspective):
CHRISTIAN DEFINITION
CULT - Any group which deviates from Biblical, orthodox, historical Christianity. e.i. They deny the Deity of Christ; His physical resurrection; His personal and physical return to earth and salvation by FAITH alone.
This definition only covers those groups which are cults within the Christian religion. It does not cover cults within other world religions such as Islam and Hinduism. Nor does it cover Psychological, Commercial or Educational cults which do not recognize the Bible as a source of reality.
UNIVERSAL DEFINITION
CULT - Any group which has a pyramid type authoritarian leadership structure with all teaching and guidance coming from the person/persons at the top. The group will claim to be the only way to God; Nirvana; Paradise; Ultimate Reality; Full Potential, Way to Happiness etc, and will use thought reform or mind control techniques to gain control and keep their members. This definition covers cults within all majopr world religions, along with those cults which have no OBVIOUS religious base such as commercial, educational and psychological cults. Others may define these a little differently, but this is the simplest to work from. THE 'ORTHODOX BIBLE-BASED CULT'
A group is called a cult because of their behaviour - not their doctrines. Doctrine is an issue in the area of Apologetics and Heresy. Most religious cults do teach what the Christian church would declare to be heresy but some do not. Some cults teach the basics of the Christian faith but have behavioural patterns that are abusive, controlling and cultic.
This occurs in both Non-Charismatic and Charismatic churches. These groups teach the central doctrines of the Christian faith and then add the extra authority of leadership or someone's particular writings. They centre around the interpretations of the leadership and submissive and unquestioning acceptance of these is essential to be a member of good standing. This acceptance includes what we consider non-essential doctrines e.i. not salvation issues (such as the Person and Work of Christ.) The key is that they will be using mind control or undue influence on their members.
An excellent book on this subject is "Churches that Abuse" by Dr Ronald Enroth.
Using these guidelines of definition, Bible-based, Psychological, Educational and Commercial aberrations can easily be identified.- Acolyte357, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1Those are horrible definitions.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult and http://wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=cult

- Coven, on 01/15/2008, -0/+17It was rejected by Charles Manson as too crazy. 'nuff said.
- oldhick, on 01/15/2008, -1/+17The argument for why Scientology sucks as compared to other religions:
- No true religion would copyright their material. If their intentions were altruistic then materials would be given freely (through charitable donations, think Gideon's bible) to those in need.
- No true religion would use scare tactics and harassment to control the information surrounding their religion. The answers to successful living and salvation wouldn't require these tactics to control the release of information
- No true religion would require documenting and archiving its members most embarrassing and humiliating secrets
- No true religion would hunt down members who have left and commence legal activities and harassment to stop them from sharing their experiences
The list goes on and on, but the negativity that flows from Scientology is mind boggling!- ophello, on 01/16/2008, -3/+1the problem is that scientology is less a religion than a science of the mind. read up on it. theres more to it than xenu.

- andyhite, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1After reading everyone's comments, I realized something that I find to be interesting: maybe Scientology is L. Ron Hubbard's own version of the "Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster", which (as Diggers I'm sure you all know) is often used to debunk belief in Christianity by comparing "God" and Christianity to something everyone obviously finds completely ridiculous. Pretty much everyone finds the whole "Xenu" story complete bunk because it deals with aliens, but what's so different between some alien being and the Christian "God" (who is by definition an alien since he is not from Earth)?
Maybe L. Ron Hubbard created Scientology intending it to be something similar to the "Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster", but it spun out of control and he just ran with it?

What he's doing: a whole lot of wishing. He's basically trying to perform a jedi mind trick on humanity to make it "better". He probably thinks it works too. Scientologists are basically selling "mind power". Everything they do is suppose to give them "powers" and they want to transmit these powers to humanity, to help humanity, as long as it can pay for it. The more money you have, the more "power" you have, because they simply tell you that you have "powers". Except the only mind that is getting altered is yours. They sell mind control as a form of mind enhancement...

- Hickeroar, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1Scientologist seem to have "forgotton" the Xenu story lately. They stopped teaching it and now deny that it was every taught. Brilliant.
- tehxen3, on 01/15/2008, -42/+28He's almost as crazy as Jesus was.
- tubaros, on 01/15/2008, -15/+6LOL!
- Hurricane, on 01/15/2008, -6/+2Good point, but at least the Christian cult is making an effort to change in recent times.

- pandapoo, on 01/15/2008, -2/+144Isn't he meant to be an 'actor'? You'd think he could make himself sound a little less like an insane person..
- terminal157, on 01/15/2008, -2/+14Yeah, but he's not a good actor.
- iancorey, on 01/15/2008, -2/+5He's a fine actor, bro.

- garagethrash, on 01/15/2008, -1/+5He is obviously acting in this clip, and not very well either. He delivers every line the same way:
1.Say first half of sentence
2.Pause for 15 minutes
3.Look up and say second half of sentence.
- terminal157, on 01/15/2008, -2/+14Yeah, but he's not a good actor.
- Thex1138, on 01/15/2008, -1/+11Some comedian out there needs to watch this and make a counter-video that just shakes the crap out of tommy and his hubbard mates...the vid' just gets funnier second time around.. :-)
- Thex1138, on 01/15/2008, -1/+3Perhaps Ben Stiller...but Owen Wilson would do a great Cruise Scio' skit..
- tattertech, on 01/15/2008, -2/+10Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson? Did you not read his comment? He said a comedian.

Insider's account of Scientology in the late 60's. Scared the ***** out of me when I read it.
- Thex1138, on 01/15/2008, -1/+3Perhaps Ben Stiller...but Owen Wilson would do a great Cruise Scio' skit..
- ConanTL, on 01/15/2008, -2/+84I love the fact that he states that as a Scientologist he can see life in all of its complexity, yet he constantly says "You're either x or your y".
If you haven't studied up on Scientology it will be very hard to understand what the hell he's saying, because he uses what is called "Hubbard Speak". L. Ron Hubbard had a very odd way of speaking, constantly using acronyms (LRH, SP, TRs,... ) and he used certain phrases that his followers use ad nauseum (getting on the bridge, ...) as well as words he just plain made up (interbulate,...)- BillDoE, on 01/15/2008, -4/+5"it will be very hard to understand what the hell he's saying" "constantly using acronyms" I have the same problem learning about computers & IT. I'm sure even if we knew wtf he was saying it would still sound pretty darn crazy. Probably even more so.
"Where's that confounded bridge?" - Led Zeppelin - tattertech, on 01/15/2008, -1/+25Well sure, a common language binds. You can't deny Hubbard was a smart bastard. Best con ever.
- Mekanikles, on 01/15/2008, -11/+6"Best con ever"
No, that would be Jesus- tattertech, on 01/15/2008, -6/+4Good point. Best modern day con by a science fiction writer?
Although let's be fair. He actually made something out of nowhere. Jesus just wrote a sequel. - daystar93, on 01/15/2008, -1/+4He didn't actually make something out of (sic) nowhere. Check out Hubbard's past relationships with Aleister Crowley and Jack Parsons. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Parsons
- tattertech, on 01/15/2008, -6/+4Good point. Best modern day con by a science fiction writer?
- pe5t1lence, on 01/15/2008, -3/+1I think you mean Raptor Jesus. I mean, he was good at cards.
- Hurricane, on 01/15/2008, -8/+2Cept Jesus may never have existed, possibly just a conceptualized individual.
Give Scientology 2000 years and see what happens.- SillyDigger, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1Very true
- ohsnapple, on 01/16/2008, -0/+0I'm not giving Scientology a second

- destraht, on 01/16/2008, -1/+1Using set theory saying you are either with us or not with us is not wrong since you are either in the "universe" (everything else) or in the set. Saying this does however imply small mindedness in a way. Since mathematically it is correct, it is really just a reflection of his values which are that it is most important to be a Scientologist above anything else.
It is also a viral thought pattern that goes like "people not like us (in our set) are suffering. People cannot be allowed to suffer. They must become like us so that they do not suffer." The best way to break this tight loop which exists in many major religions is to introduce the idea that people might not be suffering that are in outside of an arbitrarily defined set of conditions, values, morals, etc. This is always the weak point of religion.
- BillDoE, on 01/15/2008, -4/+5"it will be very hard to understand what the hell he's saying" "constantly using acronyms" I have the same problem learning about computers & IT. I'm sure even if we knew wtf he was saying it would still sound pretty darn crazy. Probably even more so.
- ReturnToFreedom, on 01/15/2008, -8/+33It seems funny but it's really more sad than anything. You know they are probably taking Tom Cruise for all his money and filling his head up with ridiculous crap. You gotta feel sorry for the guy.
- boogie606, on 01/15/2008, -0/+7i don't disagree, another point i would make is that he's absolutely and passionately sincere, but then, so was hitler!
- Hurricane, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1another good point, one persons salvation is anothers damnation
- MeatBiProduct, on 01/15/2008, -1/+1just like one mans dog terd is another mans breakfast.
- bjornski, on 01/15/2008, -0/+4I'd actually bet he's making a pretty penny being their figurehead.
- Hurricane, on 01/15/2008, -0/+2Nope, he probably had to pay $500,000 for the privilege of being in this video.
- GreatSunJester, on 01/15/2008, -0/+11I do not feel sorry for him. He is one of the few cult members who could actually LEAVE the cult safely. Except for releasing is auditing records (think of them as confessions, written down by the priest, collated and submitted to a central office and stored). they can not touch him. His fame would be his shield. Travolta, Beck, Will Smith, Greta Van Susteren, Kirtsy Ally and the other celebs can escape. The common members are trapped.
The Cult is powerful and willing to attack though...- Hurricane, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1true
- soehner, on 01/15/2008, -0/+5I don't feel sorry for the people at the TOP of a pyramid-scheme (or cult), just their victims.
- boogie606, on 01/15/2008, -0/+7i don't disagree, another point i would make is that he's absolutely and passionately sincere, but then, so was hitler!

He looks as ***** up as Wacko Jacko.
Not a single sentence he spoke made any sense.- slinky317, on 01/15/2008, -0/+7But the problem is that this is for an award show and these are the "highlights" of his speech. It just shows that what's normal for them is entirely ***** crazy for everyone else.
- Hurricane, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1I am surprised "wacko jacko" is not a clam head yet.
