youtube.com — This is unbelievable, an actual news story from Dakota about the dangers of being "emo". I'm ashamed to ever have been associated with 'emo'. Man, I miss Sunny Day Real Estate.

- micahman, on 10/12/2007, -9/+400How many emo's does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
None..they would rather sit in the dark and cry.- AdmiralAdama, on 10/12/2007, -65/+9As an Admiral, I am deeply concerned with the grave danger of this terrible "Emo" trend. We must wage war Iagainst Emos, or even all "Emotional People." Gods help us all. I am especially concerned with the revelation that "If you commit suicide, you've hit the jackpot"
- DJCult, on 10/12/2007, -0/+46Ahahahahaha, 'the emos'.
- arbiterxero, on 10/12/2007, -5/+84Those dangerous emo kids.....
They might....cry. Or not....
Although I'll admit, I wouldn't want to be associated with anything emo. Mainly because I enjoy being PRODUCTIVE.
My biggest concern is that if all the kids become emo, who will serve me my whopper? - DJCult, on 10/12/2007, -1/+74@arbit: Keven Federline?
- lansuggs, on 10/12/2007, -65/+6Sorry for comment abuse, but this needs to be said:
EMO IS NOT SHORT FOR EMOTIONAL
Bury me if you want emos - noots, on 10/12/2007, -5/+40you, yes YOU! reading this. don't even think about telling the grass joke.

- jgo6d, on 10/12/2007, -22/+11@lansuggs
Emo is short for emotional. Emotional hardcore is not the same as the pathetic pop punk/goth hybrid that is incorrectly mislabeled as emo. I'm just saying, some of us know what emo is and actually like it. - mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22I'm sure this will make Fox News soon, if it hasn't already. Most of those websites that they're referring to are satirizing Emo.
We must save our kids from Emo! By the way, how long-gone is Emo anyway? It's been dead for awhile now. Which makes sense that it's now portrayed on the local news. - 98acura, on 10/12/2007, -10/+172Guy 1 says: "I wish my lawn was emo..." Guy 2 says: "Why?" Guy 1 says: "Because then it would cut it self."
- ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Emo music is one thing. Teenagers acting like "emos" is a totally different thing, and is rightfully ridiculed for being preposterous and pathetic.
- DJCult, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2@lansuggs: I'll risk catching 'the emos'. Bury!
- oddmanout, on 10/12/2007, -18/+11holy crap... i mean... wow... they weren't even close. i don't think there was one correct thing about that. Emo is not short for emotional (emocore), its been around for more than the past year. (try mid 80's with bands like Embrace and Rites of Spring then again in the mid 90's with Sunny Day Real Estate and Texas is the reason). wtf are they talking about guides to becoming emo?? those are all JOKES every single one of them.
- ndonohue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24slow news day
- IanPatterson, on 10/12/2007, -6/+60Q: How many emos does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
A: 7. One to screw the lightbulb in, and six to say they did it first. - jmkiii, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4This would almost be a good candidate for Colbert. He should do a story about how the media has no idea what is going on.
- jgo6d, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@oddmanout
What do you think emocore is? Emotional Hardcore. I do approve of the Rites of Spring reference, however. - bluto36, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7i say this is a good thing. we should encourage EMO's to get as many points as possible. any tard can dress in black and cry about how bad things are. they need to step up to the plate and make a real difference, a real statement. if they could (and they should) off themselves in a real depressing manor. like kill yourself by choking on a puppy while listening to your favorite goth tunes or you could eat as much white face paint as you can and then light yourself on fire. something real good so all of your emo buddies could say "wow he was really cool" who knows it could start the wheel rolling and all your emo pals could join in the game.
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"i don't think there was one correct thing about that. Emo is not short for emotional (emocore)"
I guess there is one correct thing about the video. Emo is short for emotional (and emotional hardcore aka emocore). I know that emo comes from the 80's and it meant emotional then, too. - UglieJosh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Does anyone remember when emo was wearing the Budy Holly sunglasses and listening to bands like Weezer and what-not?
It was 83.9% less lame back then.
EDIT:@ianpatterson
That one went over my head at first but, once I got it, I nearly wet myself. - wild, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Anyone got a link to the emo scale quiz?
- DJCult, on 10/12/2007, -1/+68The REAL danger is looking back when you're twenty-six and finding pictures of yourself that look like THIS:

Craaaaaawling in my skiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnn... - lansuggs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@igo6d
Do I need to say it? The "emotional" hardcore is what you see came out of the hardcore scene of the 80s, but the correct term given to that type of music was known as emotive hardcore, which was shortened to emo-core, then just emo. I agree with you though about how it was a legit musical genre until it was popularized as is what usually happens. Now it is a slang term for what we know as a poor excuse for a subculture, and some new catch-all term for "fake punk". So now many simply fakeish pop-punk bands are simply being called emo, which now I consider a misnomer. - blast0x, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9if my kids wanted to be emo the only thing theyd be cutting would be my grass
- oddmanout, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1i know the "emo" part of emocore is short for "emotional" but it was never actually called "emotionalcore" it was always "emocore." but thats just picky on my part... the important part is the -core.... emotional and emo(tional)core are two farrrrr different things.
- jgo6d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@lansuggs
Interesting. I've actually never heard of it as emotive hardcore, and I live in DC. Although, even if that is the case, differentiating between emotive and emotional is almost splitting hairs. Either way, thanks for that tidbit. - k1down, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10@oddmanout

- BGFeltenink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6One word, god save you if you don't understand what this word means but on so many levels of television, and in particular, news reporting, it applies quite aptly.
Propaganda.
I'm not going into why, who does it, and for what reasons, but this is the state of news reporting in the united states as well as many other regions. We never get the whole truth, and there is no journalism to it. Journalists, true journalists, research a topic all the way, they investigate sources, ask those involved, and they work out timelines and such. They tell the whole story and try to remain as neutral to the various sides (rarely are there "two sides") and allow the reader/viewer to assimilate the facts and opinions presented.
Shame this topic is about emo, because the general sentiment is against it, but this report is nothing more than ignorance and falsehoods, emo is like anything else and has many varying degrees. I don't really dig it but there are heavy metal lovers that tattoo their whole bodies, pierce everything they can possibly pierce, there are religious zealots that crucify themselves, and there are well to do officer workers that are deeply suicidal. It's the same ***** we see with every generation. "The News" needs to be about educating us on various topics of interest, not some falsified, propagandas, or manipulated piece of fluff to keep us entertained and on our asses. - proghead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32three -

- ZanCakes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I have a theory.
Emo was just becoming main stream three years ago when I finished high school.
Here are my ideas behind how and why this came to be.
I grew up in a small community consisting generally of conservatives over 55 and went to a school dominated by the ever so important sports teams. From about grade eight on wards rap and hip hop became the general norm for popular music. Dressing scantily and mimicking jackass also became highly popular.
However, this very popular trend was not accessible to a wide number of students who failed to assimilate successfully. These students proceeded to become isolated and ostracized by their classmates becoming mildly depressed.
Picking up on this new wave of depression, brands such as "Emily the Strange" began to sprout up rapidly all over the market, meeting the need of their depressed young consumers.
Emo music, a genera that had been hinted at since Rob Smith's The Cure suddenly took on a new young following.
Pharmaceuticals (at least in my community) became extremely accessible, with new exciting anti-depressants like, Celexa and Paxil.
Thus the birth of Emo culture (don't ask me about guys wearing girls pants came from *****)
- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+118The real headline here, which is actually a non-headline, is "Non-Internet People Still Fail At The Internets."
- abney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Wow must have been a slow news day in whatever small city this was produced in. They really blew the lid off of the "emo" world.
Investigative journalism at its best! That is sure to win a local emmy for that reporter. Maybe 60 Minutes could do a companion piece to this or Anderson Cooper could fly in and explore the dangers of being "emo." Oh so scary.- DJCult, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Silence! check this out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KT5sUhIs9Q&NR - LittleDanzig, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16What does any of this have to do with "emo", seriously? It's a style of music. It's not a lifestyle, it never was. If teenagers are defining themselves by "emo" now, they're not only ten years late, they're just plain misguided. It's like calling yourself "soft rock" or "adult contemporary". Emo was a type of hardcore. "Emo kids" were punk rock kids, except they weren't as angry. They didn't 'sit around and cry' or 'cut themselves.' They went to shows and wrote zines and started bands and skateboarded and did all the things that normal kids do. It was just the type of music you listened to, nobody ever called themselves "emo."
When the hell did this begin? Did it start around the same time people started using the word 'emo' to describe jokers with acoustic guitars and bands with angular bangs singing pop-punk songs?- mikefitz2, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4emos write in their stupid blogs that nobody pays attention to, login to digg everyday to promote anti-bush articles, wear 'intellectual glasses', tight pants, spend their parent's money on macs, complain their lives are soooo hard, hate capitalism because their moronic friends do, etc.
you sure emo isnt a lifestyle? - MaynardJK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well, people say that hip-hop is a lifestyle and not just a form of music, so I would imagine it is something like that.
- LittleDanzig, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8So "emo" is a noun used to describe a person now? This gets stranger every second.
I was into emo and emo-core in the early 90's. I played in a couple of bands and read a ton of the zines and stuff. Emo was a subset of punk rock. It wasn't something you called yourself. It certainly wasn't a set of behavioural rules or mannerisms, like you seem to be describing. I knew guys who listened to the same records that I did who were construction workers, I knew some of 'em who were skate rats, I knew some of them who were dyed-in-the-wool intellectuals. It wasn't some weird cultish "you must dress, act, and think this way" thing -- it was the same thing as saying "hey, I really like jazz" or "I'm all about metal."
Emo was a style of music that appealed to people who were a little 'softer around the edges' than the anarcho-punks and the straightedge hardcore kids. Nothing more, nothing less. Even if you were into the music, you'd never walk around declaring yourself "emo" or saying "I'm an emo kid" because that would be ridiculous. Hell, even most of the bands that were the penultimate emo groups were hesitant to refer to their own music that way -- almost all of them would claim to be indie or "post-punk" because the term itself ('emotional hardcore') was so damn cheesy.
So maybe I'm just an old bastard who doesn't get it, but what this article and most of you guys seem to be describing -- to me -- sounds like what we called goth kids. Feeling sorry for yourself has nothing to do with punk rock, and even though the original batch of 'emo' was about feelings, it was about growing and learning to cope, not about nihilism and hating everything and yourself.
But I'm probably just way out of touch here. When I hear the word "emo", I think of Rites of Spring, Julia, Embrace, Clikatat Ikatowi, and bands that have been deceased for almost fifteen years now. I guess the world has moved on and now uses the name of something I used to love to describe something that I find pretty distasteful. That sucks a lot. - profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm pretty sure I remember listening to emo-the-musical-genre way before emo-the-lifestyle was around. Hell, even newer emo music by itself isn't half bad; and by "by itself" I mean leave out the ghastly visuals of men wearing mascara and don't dress like they do :P.
- Netmindstorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I like this description from urban dictionary--kind of funny
An entire subculture of people (usually angsty teens) with a fake personality. The concept of Emo is actually a vicious cycle that never ends, to the utter failing of humanity, and it goes something like this:
1. Girls say they like "sensitive guys" (lie)
2. Guy finds out, so he listens to faggy emo music and dresses like a dork so chicks will see that he is sensitive and not afraid to express himself (lie). He dyes his hair black, wraps himself in a stupid looking scarf, develops an eating disorder, and rants about how "nobody understands".
3. Now an emo guy, he meets Emo chick and they start dating, talking about how their well-off suburban lifestyles are terrible and depressing (lie)
4. Emo guy is just too much of a pussy. His penis is too small, he's too depressed to bathe, and has more mood swings than emo chick, and he doesn't even have a menstrual cycle. Emo chick dumps him, saying "It's not you, it's me." (lie) as she drives off with Wayne, the school jock and captain of the football team.
5. Emo guy goes home and cries, proceeds to write a weak song and strum a single string on his acoustic guitar. Another emo chick sees how he is so in touch with his feelings, and the cycle continues. - AllnightChemist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I guess the world has moved on and now uses the name of something I used to love to describe something that I find pretty distasteful."
Here'here! Have you heard what passes for punk rock these days? - LittleDanzig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm kind of out of touch with the Almighty Youth Culture(tm) these days, but am I correct in assuming then that bands like Fallout Boy and that kind of stuff are now considered "emo"? I'm getting that distinct impression from the other posts around here and, if so, that is certifiably insane. Fallout Boy and My Chemical Romance and all of those groups have way more in common musically with Fat Wreck Chords pop-punk like Lagwagon and No Use For A Name than they do with emo -- hell, play a Fallout Boy and a Fugazi record back to back and tell me with a straight face that they're in the same genre of music, I dare you.
Judging the entire timeline and history of emo-the-musical-genre (hah, thanks for that, btw) based on these bands and their fans is like judging rock music based solely on Kelly Clarkson. I really hope that's not what's happening here. - offwithyourtv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seriously, LittleDanzig, I know what you mean. I'm 23, so I'm only barely old enough to vaguely remember emo the way it used to be, but I do know that it was once something respectable. I have no idea where this new "emo" lifestyle came from, since it certainly didn't spawn from original emo. I guess "emo" has become just another sadly misused label now, much like the people who consider themselves "hippies" based solely on the fact that they smoke pot and listen to Widespread Panic.
- mikefitz2, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4emos write in their stupid blogs that nobody pays attention to, login to digg everyday to promote anti-bush articles, wear 'intellectual glasses', tight pants, spend their parent's money on macs, complain their lives are soooo hard, hate capitalism because their moronic friends do, etc.
- liquidcola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Watch the video again... One of the girls being interviewed thinks she's Pete Wentz's (of fall out boy, emo poster boy) wife. Oh yeah, and this is the dumbest thing I think I've ever seen.
- RHollister, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17emo is about 16 year old kids crying about love and misfortunes when im pretty sure they have no idea what love or misfortune really is.
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30This video depresses me.
/wrists- jamauss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9hahaha, best use of the "slashies" I've seen in a while.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12When I was 15 I wore a black trenchcoat, had a pink mohawk, and used safety pins as earrings. I went to all-ages hardcore punk shows, wrote poetry, nursed a single coffee for hours in Denny's, and smoked cloves.
My parents pretty much ignored it and I turned out fine. I think if they'd flipped out I'd have spent all my time and energy trying to piss them off more.- Rianousuke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1 Former goth/punk kids unite!
- xobecide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I still wear tight jeans, metal studded jackets, bandanas, and Iron Maiden T-shirts wherever I go... I'm 19 and I know metal will never come back, but at least people will remember it when they see me.

Laughing...in pain...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
It's too bad the emo kids can't truly understand how ridiculous they are right now..it will take 10 to 15 years for that reality to hit them I guess. - slashthrough, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Death to false emo. A curse on the media who distorts a distortion of a simulacra of a gone and failed trend.
- cutlerite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7What do you call an emo kid outside the mall?
Anything he'll cry no matter what you do. - DarkSenay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6OK, its not Dakota its North or South Dakota, two states there
Specifically, this video is from Grand Forks, North Dakota - MrMcGuire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is hilarious. I can't believe they are serious about this. For most, "emo" is just another style to differentiate themselves from people. Hippies anyone? It will pass, and another trend will come. Adults will never fully understand because the younger generations make it that way. I'm probably wrong, but that's my two cents anyways.
- g0rdy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Adults will never fully understand"
huh, i went from grade school to an adult? I guess I was never a teenager - MrMcGuire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok, 'many people' may never fully understand. Haha.

That reminds me of the back-water news reports I used to laugh at when I was a little goth kid in High School.
Fun times. - bluto36, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i say this is a good thing. we should encourage EMO's to get as many points as possible. any tard can dress in black and cry about how bad things are. they need to step up to the plate and make a real difference, a real statement. if they could (and they should) off themselves in a real depressing manor. like kill yourself by choking on a puppy while listening to your favorite goth tunes or you could eat as much white face paint as you can and then light yourself on fire. something real good so all of your emo buddies could say "wow he was really cool" who knows it could start the wheel rolling and all your emo pals could join in the game.
- shieshky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is hilarious
the emos must be stopped - vondfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so were they stupidly and unknowingly using websites mocking "the emos" or knowingly using these websites to create an incredibly sensationalized story? either way, excellent stuff. seriously, best comedy i've seen in ages.
- ElectricFuneral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2emos are *****
- dannyb37, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Emo points? Your kidding me right? Thats just people who are faking emoism, it takes the focus off the people who are genuinely emo and have actual problems! They give the emos a worse name than what they already have!
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2faking emoism
is that some sort of oxymoron? - wild, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WTFV,
The sheriff clrealy states these kids aren't mentally ill, its just a fashion thing. - dannyb37, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some emos are actually not in it for the fashion, there are some with problems! Just the bulk of them are in it for the fashion!
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2faking emoism
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ahhhhhhhh I love the smell of a witch hunt in the morning.
Did that sheriff actually say that kids who cut themselves and attempt suicide DON'T have psychological problems?
I love their take on the 'culture' that was basically gleaned from some ***** website. As if there are kids running around with emo scorecards dancing for joy because their cutting session last night got them 15 emo points. I wonder what you can redeem those emo points for? basketballs? bubble gum? Or is it some sort of RPG, where doing "emo" things is like gaining XP and every once in a while your level up. - RalphDibny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i like how teenagers and college kids pretend that they've either outgrown or transcended the whole emo scene now, but they still listen to the same trash (just more recent trash) and dress ever so slightly different and VOILA!!! You have magically transformed yourself from the undesirable "emo" stigma into the more currently hip and socially acceptable "indy rock scene." Congrats!!
All i'm saying is shades of grey people, shades of grey. - offwithyourtv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The news program may have mistakenly used a lot of sites making fun of emo, but a lot of the emo people I've come across appear as though they actually use those sites as references, perhaps too dumb to realize they're intended to make fun of emo. Or maybe they just can't see the site well enough with their monocular vision to know any better.
- Sithlrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Holy ***** I'm 35 years old with two kids and I'm sitting here thinking "Adults are so ***** stupid"
- GjooGjoob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Wow.
Even with such little comments you guys showed how completely clueless you are and how much you actively buy into the very media BS you mock.
Every source in that video was a spoof site mocking emo and it's sad to see them actually using them as real, hard data. I'd figure you guys would be more upset over the fact that a news station can't even get its sources right rather than a group of people you've never met, let alone understand beyond a superficial level.
The whole "emo is cutting wrists and crying" thing is just stupid and retarded. Tell me, how many of those of you with active social lives know any emo people? A great many of my friends are "emo" in that of the style of their dress, the music they listen to, the culture they embrace; all the poetry and writing and starting bands and magazines and that sort of thing. What's wrong with that? What's wrong with expressing yourself creatively? None of them cut themselves and the whole cutting board they showed on the news was obviously some retarded prank pulled by some nitwit who's never stepped outside his suburb. Emo has been bastardized by a bunch of clueless assholes who take a few blogs and think omg they cut themselves and are emo, thus all emos cut themselves. '
All the emo kids are know are great, wonderful people and are fun to be with. They've gone through some hard times, I know several who have left home because of parental problems. Not just oh man they grounded me I h8 life, but alcoholic moms and abusive dads. Serious stuff like that. I think that gives them a reason to be upset. Have you ever had your mom tell you that she full on hated you and that you're a mistake? Personally, I would be very upset and depressed over that. Sorry if having feelings makes me sub-human.
And Fall Out Boy, Dashboard Confessional et al IS NOT emo.- RalphDibny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Gjoogjoob
I write music, start bands, listen to a vast erray of bands, look at art and make art, read poetry ect. however i do not find it necessary to display how much greater my understanding of what it means to be cultured or creative by buying and wearing expensive clothes that can do the preaching for me. Much like the punks in the 80s: Emos that are dressing different and buying into these "pre-packaged identidies" do it because they want to be seen in a certain way and not because they care about their art, music, peotry or whatever. They are making a statement for themselves, not for their ideal. - bluto36, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i think you should spend less time on the Internet and more time sawing on your arms. quick there is a sale on tight black jeans at Ross(or TJmax); you better go. if you miss the sale you may be so depressed that you have to cry even more than you do now.
/do you still carry your gay little lunch box around with you? oh yeah that was the 80's version my bad. please go back to dyeing your hair black - Shane98c, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The problem is these kids want to be depressed and want to be hated. It makes no sense, don't buy into their crap. I would bet 1% of emo kids actually have a problem the rest just wish they did... Actually they all have a problem...

Emo = Emotional
Emo = Punk/Ska/Some rock ala My Chemical Romance
Emocore = Hardcore w/ Emo lyrics also Metal w/ emo lyrics such as bands like Killswitch Engage (they call them selves metalcore)
