- estaestumadre, on 09/09/2008, -9/+40i wish.
- jemka, on 09/09/2008, -1/+45As the technology for prosthetic and bionic devices improves, societies will eventually need to draw a line if this is to be avoided. I don't think I would mind trading my flesh/bone transportation device to a mechanical one, but I just hope when it happens we're not still arguing which OS (windows/linux/OSx) my "body" should use.
- Iztikeit, on 09/09/2008, -19/+5It is sad you see your body as a transportation device, when that is just not the case.
Must be a hard life to think you are just a thought/consciousness floating around in a shoddy carbon based body. - Stevethegreat, on 09/09/2008, -0/+14Are you not? If so how?
If everything are electrical signals interpreted by your brain, then without your physical body you would still be able to live a full life, but without a brain you would be dead as a stick. Look at some paraplegics, they lost half -or even- all of their members yet -some of them- are living lives far more exciting than most of us would ever live. There was a guy who lost his legs yet took up climbing with his prosthetics, he's technically bionic, a cyborg, is he less of a human than you are? - billbugger, on 09/09/2008, -1/+9@lztikeit: Well, aren't we?
I choose OSX cuz it's pretty :-p - soccernamlak, on 09/09/2008, -3/+28Well...
Windows: Everyone uses it, but you constantly need daily updates so that your transportation device works properly. Sometimes the world might become all blue, but a simple kick in the rear will reboot you back up. Of course, there is a slight chance that with newer updates, some of your body parts may not be compatible with your older device, but don't fear, scientists are constantly working on compatibility programs.
Linux: The choice OS for geeks and nerds. Sure the mechanical device may not be pretty, and you have designed most of the parts of your transportation yourself, but you laugh at others as you can do whatever you like with your suit and you got it for free. Of course, if you need parts, nothing else will work with your suit unless a) someone makes it work for you or b) you spill some WINE on it
Mac OS XI : The elite. You stride around in your pretty white suit with encrusted diamonds from the coal remains of the Great Steve Jobs. All your parts were meticulously designed in Chinese sweat shops, but you refuse to acknowledge or believe this statement. You may be in a minority, but you walk around as a majority: thinking you are better than anyone else. Your suit may never break down in your mind, but Apple slips quiet updates to keep your suit in tip top performance. Of course, without ruining your suit and splitting it into two, if anything breaks, you're ***** out of luck: no parts will work with your suit and new parts cost just as much as buying a suit for Windows. But the price is small for the inflation of your ego.
Google OS: You rule the world. Congratulations.
Hope this helps clear up some confusion on the OS wars in 2029, The Year of Linux! - BestJaxx, on 09/09/2008, -0/+14What about sex? I want nerves.
- tehbored, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1Why would you want to avoid this?

- Iztikeit, on 09/09/2008, -19/+5It is sad you see your body as a transportation device, when that is just not the case.
- oxilite, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3Have fun on the robot reservation suckers!
- SomeDrunk, on 09/10/2008, -1/+3Let's do it. Let's kill a human.
- 13373h4X0r, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1So, using my I.Q. of 260 - that's 2-6-0 - I built a cybernetic body...
- sanman, on 09/10/2008, -0/+4Since humans who go robot can't reproduce, they'd be limiting their numbers. Meanwhile, the humans who stay human would still be reproducing.
"You're terminated, motherf&$*#er"- Chakat, on 09/10/2008, -2/+4Let's play with this scenario a bit. You destroy an uploaded person's body. Cool. That person thought ahead though, has a dozen more spread throughout the continent. While you're gloating, it obtains the resources to make another dozen, then another dozen, heading after you with a desire for revenge. Would you be able to keep up? Would you keep up when it realizes that this planet will eventually have some calamity face it, and uploads itself to nearby planets which are unsuitable for biological life? Would you keep up when it spreads itself across the galaxy, an ever-expanding point of consciousness no "normal" human could comprehend? Would you keep up as it spreads itself throughout the universe, a fragmented mind with the processing power of the stars? Or would you fall into oblivion because the sun decided to send out a gamma burst? You're fragile, an uploaded, fragmented, consciousness is a lot less so.
- TheMoniker, on 09/10/2008, -0/+2Who said that humans who can't go robot can't reproduce? Without solving the hard mind-body problem, none of us can really say how one could reproduce consciousness. It might be a relatively simple matter for a post-human, then again, it could be impossible. Still, it's not clear that they'd be limiting their numbers.
- TheMoniker, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1Er, "humans who go robot," rather.
- MiNGLED, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1Once you go robot, you never go back.

- lukas88, on 09/10/2008, -2/+15The reference is to the simpsons, which, as you know, is responsible for half of the content on the internet in some indirect way.
- Eifandil, on 09/10/2008, -1/+4The simpsons is responsible for half of the content for just about anything. My theory, is that Matt Groening can see the future.

- plimpton777, on 09/09/2008, -2/+194TETSUOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Doomsan, on 09/09/2008, -3/+99KANEDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Observer001, on 09/10/2008, -1/+1It's a good thing that Kaneda kept yelling Tetsuo's name at him. That way, he can remember it at the end of the film when he achieves apotheosis.
- mythicflux, on 09/09/2008, -2/+64(Or for the really poorly voice acted US dubbed version)
CANADA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!- inhaler, on 09/09/2008, -12/+6subtitle elitist
- dinostabOMG, on 09/10/2008, -8/+3MEXICOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
- mythicflux, on 09/10/2008, -1/+8It has nothing to do with being a subtitle elitist. There were two dubbed versions of Akira. One of the versions pronounces the name 'ka nay da' (emphasis on the nay sound) . The other pronounced it more like 'ca neh da'. Both are probably correct but the one that sound like Canada is very off putting. Made me shout 'America' at the screen screen as a joke.
Here is some audio from the crappy one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htoXCjSE0fg
Here is some from the good version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDm4FoWEpOA - CriX, on 09/10/2008, -2/+3Actually that's the right way to say it. The wrong way is the "ka-NEH-daaaa!!!!" version. I had a Japanese gf many years ago and she corrected me.
- bagboyrebel, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1normally on any other dub I would agree with inhaler, but as mythicflux said there is both a good and a bad dub of the movie.
- HisTumness, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1Not sure why CriX is being buried... he's right. Kaneda is a very common surname in Japan and it is pronounced "KA-neh-da", not "ka-NEH-da".

- mario323, on 09/09/2008, -3/+4The people that most these comics on digg need to realize that not everyone has a dull sense of humor like the poster. Some people are looking for things that are actually funny.
- hellmit, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3Well what are you wasting your time commenting here for. Go find and show me this amazing "actually funny" content you speak of.
- TheNeptune, on 09/09/2008, -2/+2I think it's quite obvious that truly funny material doesn't make Digg front page. For real lulz.. http://icanhascheezburger.files.wordpress.com/2007 ...

- saejinn, on 09/09/2008, -0/+10Downloading our brains into computers, living immortally in the digital world, operating modular robotic bodies, being able to transfer our conscious at the speed of light across the Internet...all of that is fine but what I'm really waiting for is when the holodeck is invented. Then the human race as we know it would consist of two things: Working to maintain society, and, on our off hours, plugging into a holodeck.
- blast_flame, on 09/09/2008, -0/+9I'm hoping that we'll get enough automation to get rid of that whole working to maintain society part.
- SomeDrunk, on 09/10/2008, -0/+3That's exactly the kind of thinking that will lead to robot uprisings! Robot Rights Now!
- blast_flame, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1Now, now I think AIs should be able to do as they please. I just think we should program them so they want to do that sort of stuff.
