2008 BMW M3 Coupe officially revealed (35 Pics, too!)
autoblog.com — What else is there to say? BMW has unveiled the production version of the 2008 M3 Coupe. Its 403 horsepower V8 weighs less than the outgoing M3's six-cylinder, and it goes like stink, all while cocooning the driver in the expected level of luxury. Also cool: regenerative braking provides the power to the car's on-board network.

- noonzie, on 10/12/2007, -28/+20not lovin it. from certain angles it looks like a mazda. i don't like the wheels either. I know an m3 isn't all about the looks, but the design is not overly impressive.
- sonaro, on 10/12/2007, -49/+1How can a car engine weigh only 33 lbs.?
- namtellum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18@sonaro
"New engine weighs 33 lbs. less than the outgoing M3's six-cylinder" - xXRobbyXx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9sexy!
- OMGWTFROFLMAOx2, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Nice, I wonder how the 2008 Audi RS8 will stack up against it.
- KennMac, on 10/12/2007, -12/+24The RS8 will F'in bury that thing. Are you kidding? The current RS4 already does.
The RS8 is presumed to tap a bi-turbo charged W-12 in excess of 600 bhp.
If you're talking about the M5, then OK, you may have a story. - gxcdesign, on 10/12/2007, -8/+28Ask any BMW Enthusiast
E30 > E46 > E36 > E93
This car doesn't even look mean or resembles anything ///M has made. - petrograd, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9KennMac, the enginer horsepower is not the sole determinant in how well a car drives and feels on the track or on the street. I'm sure a Shelby Cobra will beat it in a drag race but BMW are known for their well balanced chassis which Audi or anything else doesn't come close to.
- kritond, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12RS8? It wouldn't even hold a candle to it on a track. They are totally different, uncomparable cars, the RS8 will probably weigh a ton more than the M3, straight line w/ 600 hp should be interesting though. The current RS4 will match up nicely with this M3, it won't own it, Audi's just weigh too much w that AWD.
- OMGWTFROFLMAOx2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3oops typo, meant RS4
Anyone know if there will be an RS5 to match the A5/S5? - KennMac, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"oops typo, meant RS4"
Ah, then that makes more sense. It would be a good match, but the RS4 is incredibly nimble. The well balanced frame is relatively lightweight. So I'm not sure what KritonD is suggesting.
@petrograd
The RS8, (currently dubbed the R8) is 10 times the track car this M3 ever will be. Not to mention, your chassis and weight arguement goes right out the window as Lambo produced this chassis, weighing in at 3440 lbs. This new M3 is 3600+. I won't even mention the power to weight ratio.

I agree. I think the biggest change from a psychological perspective is that the tail end has been sloped giving it a femanine look instead of the broad "muscular" look of the previous years tail ends. Not my taste, but I suppose a lot of people would think that's a pretty hot car. Particularly woman. - zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Well at least now I'll know what the ***** tailgating me is driving...
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1what a monster.
not loving it ? you must not like the awesome blending of style, passion, art and power that the M3 is. lame-o.
but just so you know, the RS8 would beat it. The RS4 gives it a freakin' hard time as well... especially in rally conditions. - ilovenicotine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1@zonk3r
i drive my bimmer like a prick because that's what's expected. i drove properly for a while and still got flipped off, cut off, etc. so why not? i'm an elitist too. if you drove one, you'd understand.
what's the difference between a bmw and a porcupine? a porcupine has pricks on the outside. - ilikefun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@gxcdesign
hooray for e30. that was my 1st car: 1985 325e. i beat that thing to hell. i sold it for $1500 with about 250,000 mi on it. - Hilton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All the informations and pictures about M3: http://news.taume.com/World-Business/Auto/2008-BMW-M3-872

- noonz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8As a correction, it's 420 hp, not 403. I had a typo in there I didn't catch.

- aserer511, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Super car, just not classy, whereas the E46 maintained the 3 series' class.
- elev, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1I never really got a feeling of class from a 3 series. They are the ultimate driving machines and are all about driving excitement, not class. The 5 and 7 series are definitely classy, but not the 3 series, it's emphasizes driving too much to be classy.
- shredswithpiks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I think this is wayyy classier than the E46 series M3.... unfortunately, that's what turns me off about it :(
- madcaesar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25Meh not impressed by the design...
- silverchrysalis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7seconded
- nbcivic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I think that the front could be a little bit sharper, but the back of that car screams m3, especially the rear bumper and exhausts.

- EvilGnome, on 10/12/2007, -4/+41Am I the only one that likes the older BMWs better than the new bodied ones? (With the exception of the 6 series)
- misxn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Nope. You're not alone. That's why I own two older BMWs. I just can't stand the new designs. I do like the 6 series and the new Z4s.
- ashwin100, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5My exact opinion aswell misxn.
- elev, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1You're right about the 6 series. Ford's Thunderbird through the 80s and 90s ruined that shape by copying it.
- underwearman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3yeah i dont really like the the new models as much. they are too feminine
- Phantastica, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3I fully agree. I still really like the look of my E36 M3:

- coherentlight, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6No impressed with the RS4 with a starting price of 66,000 either. For bang for the buck the BMW M3's have out delivered consistently.
- RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1On the bang for the buck note I think that the 335i probably has the M3 beat. While it might only make 300hp from the start with a bit of tuning I'm sure it could match the M3 for quite a bit less...
Then again, the fact that it's an M3 does give it badass points =)
- coherentlight, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6No impressed with the RS4 with a starting price of 66,000 either. For bang for the buck the BMW M3's have out delivered consistently.
- JJOL, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0420 horse power! I knew the M3 was sick but didnt realize it smoked that sweet cheeba.
- vpofhaterade, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Eh....
- onimusha115, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17I'm not a huge fan of it. I dont really like where BMW is going design wise, too rounded of a shape. To me it almost looks like a cheap car, the older models almost set themselves apart from the pack. But hey, who am I? Not like I can afford to be in the market for one of these anyways. The cars I'm looking at are under 15 grand..............Man I'm poor.
- elev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree that the old models look MUCH better than they currently do. But, my favorite 3 series, from the late 80s and early 90s, looks just like a Nissan Sentra from the back. Only the front 1/3 of the car sets it apart and boy does it.
When the mini wears out its cutsie appeal and all the teenies stop begging daddy for it, they should have the same team redo the 2002. - nowayhoseb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hehe....thats cause nissan copied it...
- vodkagunblast, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0It's handsome. However, I will not consider buying any new car until they start offering hybrid Gasoline/Hydrogen engines.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4BMW is at the forefront of hydrogen technology and is currently testing 7-series models on public roads. Also, their 1-series will offer an engine stop/start system soon, similar to hybrids, and the new M3 has regenerative braking.
- elev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I would hardly say forefront. AFAIK, they are only testing hydrogen combustion engines, not fuel cells. It reminds me of the Chevy diesels from 70s.
- SecondGuesser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I'm holding out for a diesel M3. Homebrewed biodiesel + M3 = happy me. Probably years away from a diesel-powered M3 sold in the US, though. Anyone heard otherwise?
- paulsmerdon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I agree that the E46 M3 design was nicer but it's hard to argue with 420HP. I think it would be a big improvement if they got rid of the hump on the hood and the fin on the roof.
- Y0tsuya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I know 0-60 isn't everything but the E46 M3 had a big lead over 330i, whereas the E90 M3 and 335i are within 0.5s of each other. Not very convincing.
- EEdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Owned a 3 series. Greatest driving car I ever had. Wouldn't touch the new ones, though. They've been Bangled (absolutely awful styling), and they seem to have the GM reliability disease now. Pity.
- nowayhoseb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1mee too. .. BMWs drive great (the best IMO) but no one is mentioning how the interior looks 80s in the new 3...what is up with all the right angles....
- Barbarino, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3GM always had better reliability than BMW. Anyways, the car like all Beemers except the 6 look bloated.
- corvairkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Like the old saying, "GM cars will run badly longer than most cars run at all."
- nowayhoseb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Its Bimmer..for those who know
- evcarforum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0amazing engine. grand prix looks. this is coming from an e46 owner(03 m3)
- venson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I still like my 03 m3 too, but didn't Chris Bangle design the e46 as well as the new line?
- morcheeba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nope. The Bangalization started with the upper models first (notoriously the 7) and trickled down to the bread-and-butter 3-series with the E90. (E46 03 330i owner)
- phantomsnow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Who the ***** compares an RS8 to an M3?

- MrEddy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Looks like your typical beamer. Might be nice under the hood but on the outside its nothing special. Just another beamer.
- kritond, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Beamer is a BMW motorcycle. Bimmer is a BMW car.
- CornrowWallace, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I suspect that only 1:500,000 Diggusers will ever be able to afford this car.
I certainly know that with my 15 years in the IT industry, I never will.
Well, maybe in 2015 when it is $30K used. And gas is $20 a gallon.- mweels, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Time to get a new job!
- soccerboi00, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I like the old M3s much better.
http://www.bmworg.ru/img/cars/e30_006.jpg- illahtech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Not even! Those are the nerdiest looking ones. The last gen M3's (early 2000's) are my favorite. The current gen is a little too rounded like cheap Japanese family cars - not just the M3, but all current gen BMW's.
- moofer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nothing quite says failed 1990's weed dealer like an early M3 with a huge riceboy wing on the trunk.
- inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11 in 500,000? Seriously? I think many people could get a loan and get it (not a good idea on lower salaries), but it could be done. However I was under the impression that quite a few diggers are from California, silicon valley area?
I'd say at least 200,000 of us working in this area from just companies around me can easily afford the car.
Hmm I'd actually be curious to see a digg survey of salaries of all the digg users, would be interesting!- Philodox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have a new inspiration to get promoted... and that is to be able to afford the new M3.
- illahtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Being able to afford it and being willing to spend that kind of money on a car are totally different :-) My fiance and I *could* swing these payments, but unless we wanted to sit in a car all day patting ourselves on the back for possessing an M3 it'd be much more fun to blow $1000 / month experiencing life.

- SambekZX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The E46 M3 still turns my head every time (even though every rich Indian/Chinese/Korean college kid has one these days). The muscular, chiseled look is unique and timeless. In contrast, the new E90's curves give the car no definition, and has been copied by all makes, giving it the allure of a Scion tC. The V8's performance is astounding, as will be the handling. But even great performance cannot fully redeem a car's bland looks in the fickle realm of luxury sport coupes (Pontiac GTO). I guess this is why Porsche has remained conservative with its external design changes.

- Szandor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What's the difference between porcupines and BMWs?
Porcupines have pricks on the outside.
Yes, it's lame. But it's also seems to be consistently accurate. - phantomsnow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Why? Just because BMW's are expensive? People with money to buy expensive cars are pricks? What entitles you to pass judgment on millions of people? You're as bad as a racist zealot. Is it consistently accurate that racists are pieces of *****? Yup. ***** off.
- Szandor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's just a joke, man.
- Szandor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I own a 2002 myself. Just a silly observation. Relax.
- digdigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The styling looks so 2005/6. They better higher a new designer.
- MontyPython, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am tired of BMW's "American" look in their cars. Why can't they go back to their old Euro styles.

- djfreex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am trying to hard to love this one - design wise. When I first saw the M3 E46 I did not even need to try.
- Rhythmicidea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0They missed on this one. The m3 used to be my favorite car. Definitely not the new ones though, that's for sure. Cool, its a v8... makes the body too wide. The E46 is a much better design. If you want a bigger engine, why would you get a 3 series... I think I'll keep my 99' 540i
- DaveClarkOne, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Likes: The carbon fiber roof (but no sunroof), mirrors, and hood vents.
The rest? fuhhhgggeeettaboutttit (Lord, those wheels suck)
I think BMW has been taken over by Honda/Acura designers --the emasculation has begun. - dricebrug, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Its like this; You may not like the car... Fine. But dont bash a car that no one even tested yet! This car goes along perfectly with the new 335i and extends the ///Motor-sport brand as well as any other M car. The styling is arguable, however the reliability and performance is not. Most of the people who are talking trash on the new BMW "GM reliability" have never owned one. There is no arguing that no matter how you look at it, 100 Hp / liter is most impressive. If I had the money, I'd buy one....
