25 Beautiful Minimalistic Website Designs
vandelaydesign.com — A collection of some of the best minimalistic web designs. These sites look great and load quickly.
- 1358 diggs
- digg it
- Azmeos, on 10/24/2007, -7/+23A few (like wordpress) don't belong on that list.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/24/2007, -12/+4Why not? Wordpress actually sports a pretty minimalistic design for a site with so much content.
http://www.wordpress.org - goyney, on 10/24/2007, -8/+4Exactly, WordPress is what lazy web developers turn to if they want to do minimal work. WordPress is slow and buckles under large user loads.
- theOster, on 10/24/2007, -5/+2where do i find this "WordPress"??? ahh, forget it
- redivider, on 10/24/2007, -0/+8They're talking about the design of Wordpress.org. Not the software itself.
And if I'm not a lazy web developer what should I use that doesn't require me to reinvent the wheel? Oh, and it should be able to stand up to Digg traffic on a $5/month shared hosting plan. That seems to be the standard everyone holds Wordpress to around here so it's only fair... - sumeshpremraj, on 06/07/2008, -0/+1Trust me when I say WordPress can withstand a full-blown Digg on $2.5 per month host (Dreamhost). I have.
All it takes is proper caching and optimization and a clean theme (= not overloaded with scripts/media/images).
WordPress got its bad reputation from goons who used it dynamically during a Digg, when the benefit of WP is actually its dynamic nature for quick changes (something MovableType can't do,and for which everyone blames it)
- JibberGeorge, on 10/24/2007, -9/+1Erm, wordpress designs CAN be just as beautiful s any other. http://www.defaultmyspacelayouts.net
- fuzzynyanko, on 10/23/2007, -2/+3Yeah, wordpress is pretty script heavy
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/24/2007, -0/+9Wow is there some anti-wordpress sentiment here on digg.. I didn't realize it had gotten so bad...
- radix33, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2They were just jealous because they didn't come up with it sooner.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/24/2007, -12/+4Why not? Wordpress actually sports a pretty minimalistic design for a site with so much content.
- droolman, on 10/24/2007, -5/+8My two favs on the list are
http://www.markboultondesign.com
http://www.rikcatindustries.com- consoneo, on 10/24/2007, -1/+5I don't know about those so much, but this guy, http://www.danielscrivner.com/ has seriously got some talent. His portfolio has some nice work :)
- manogamez, on 10/24/2007, -14/+61http://www.google.com
- jhshukla, on 10/24/2007, -6/+11it's not beautiful. not ugly either but definitely not beautiful. then again, everyone has their opinion for what is beautiful and what is not.
- freecodesnippet, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2lol, google sure has minimalistic design
- chris9902, on 10/24/2007, -2/+3I think you need more than a logo, search box and text links. Why not just link to a mailing list as an example
- bmartin, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2A lot of the people responding are looking at this the wrong way. Look at yahoo.com... then look at altavista.com. By comparison to other interfaces in its class, Google really is beautiful; there's a lot more functionality than on AV's page and it's not as hideous and cluttered as Yahoo's.
- iancorey, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3This is like saying an empty envelope is a good example of simple, aesthetic design. In its functional design, it's been perfected. But its aesthetic design... peh.
- jamesspelt, on 10/24/2007, -1/+15http://www.vandelaydesign.com.nyud.net/blog/design ...
- JoeWindetc, on 10/24/2007, -12/+1^^^ This is called a mirror. Try clicking on that before you ask for a mirror, bitch about the site being down, or make some other useless comment.
- crweaks23, on 10/24/2007, -0/+7thanks, jackass
- bmartin, on 10/23/2007, -2/+1Minimalistic, but hideous.
- conversation, on 10/24/2007, -0/+0Thanks for the mirror!
- JoeWindetc, on 10/24/2007, -12/+1^^^ This is called a mirror. Try clicking on that before you ask for a mirror, bitch about the site being down, or make some other useless comment.
- incd, on 04/18/2008, -8/+6Aand down.
- mtwolf, on 10/24/2007, -19/+10http://www.jesus-is-savior.com/

- Ireland, on 10/23/2007, -2/+2That's not minimal.
- davmattucci, on 10/24/2007, -1/+4Wow... highly underrated, not sure how it didn't make the cut. Thanks for the laugh.... Cheers.

- drfre, on 10/24/2007, -6/+550 diggs = 500 internal server error
- extro, on 10/23/2007, -2/+0Thats funny :-).
- buddyfarr, on 10/23/2007, -1/+2hmmm...50 people dug it but probably thousands were actually looking at it and took it down. it did the same thing to me. that is why I didn't digg it.
- VintageMud, on 11/03/2007, -2/+158Wow, that 404 is pretty minimalistic alright.
- FTHamilton, on 10/24/2007, -0/+12Loaded instantaneously, too!
- justcursedme, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2It "decremented" to 403 by the time I got here... ugh... better search for a mirror...
- andywebb95, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1The 404 got my digg
- profundiz, on 10/24/2007, -3/+17proof that even a minimalistic website can crash your server at heavy loads
- consoneo, on 10/24/2007, -1/+5A lot of these minimalistic pages are not really minimalistic, they just look that way :) Still have large file sizes
- bencefeher, on 10/23/2007, -5/+1meh.
- elbonito665, on 10/24/2007, -0/+9youh.

- jer2eydevil88, on 10/23/2007, -6/+5http://www.duggmirror.com
will it work... nope and google cache doesn't have it either... oh well maybe it will be online sometime next week after digg has its way with the site. - dootzky, on 10/23/2007, -6/+2haha.. true..
well, it's not a site designer/developer fault that hosting server computer sucks, that's not related in any way to DESIGN.
but yes, 404 sux badly! :D :) :) :) :):)- HigherLogic, on 10/24/2007, -1/+1No, but it's a developer's fault for not optimizing their website to handle simple HTTP requests. Either setup caching or maybe a rewrite rule to redirect all traffic from Digg to a static version or whatever, there are plenty of ways to handle large bursts of traffic.
- buddyfarr, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1but if he is hosting it on his own server off of a dsl or comcast line then no amount of optimizing is going to handle the digg effect.
- markiemarke, on 10/23/2007, -2/+3such a shame the blogger didnt follow their lead.
- mjaleo, on 10/24/2007, -3/+2Anybody got the list cached?
- mikehill33, on 10/23/2007, -4/+4The Forbidden sure is my favorite minimalist design.
- freecodesnippet, on 10/23/2007, -7/+1Thats not a cool thing to say, you suck...
- mikehill33, on 10/25/2007, -3/+1you suck at the internet.

ah, minimalism at its finest- Mantarii, on 10/23/2007, -4/+4I CAN HAS SENSE OF HUMOR?
Jeeeez. I swear! It wasn't the world's funniest joke, but come on guys, it was funny. You click on a link to see the most beautiful/minimalistic web designs, and you end up with a very minimalistic 403/404 page. That's funny!- burke, on 10/23/2007, -1/+2It's also posted 6 or 7 times every time an article like this comes up.
- Mantarii, on 10/23/2007, -4/+4I CAN HAS SENSE OF HUMOR?
- daza, on 10/23/2007, -2/+1Shame the blog doesn't load quickly (or at all).
- freecodesnippet, on 10/23/2007, -3/+2*****, I wanted to look at those designs, maybe the hosting company sucks...
Anyway, make sure you are prepared (for digg effect) next time: http://freecodesnippet.com/articles/wordpress/surv ...
You can't do much about it, but it might help... - oneon, on 10/24/2007, -1/+17Vandelay design? George must run this place. Totally unimpressed with any of their stuff...
- MtheoryX, on 10/23/2007, -2/+2*pants around ankles* Vandelay Industries! Vandelay Industries! Say Vandelay Industries!
Awesome.- thugok, on 10/24/2007, -1/+3And you want to be MY latex salesman?
- MtheoryX, on 10/23/2007, -2/+2*pants around ankles* Vandelay Industries! Vandelay Industries! Say Vandelay Industries!
- YaDontWannaKnow, on 10/23/2007, -2/+1is this minimalistic enough? legmot-productions.wz.cz I just want to know how bad people think my website is :D
- mrweasel, on 10/23/2007, -1/+0First thing that came to my mind was cluttered.
Not minimalistic at all. The top menu thingy is really cluttered
- mrweasel, on 10/23/2007, -1/+0First thing that came to my mind was cluttered.
- Doomsan, on 10/23/2007, -3/+2403 error is so beautiful...

- siim, on 10/23/2007, -1/+1best in that list:
http://www.janreichle.com/- schizogony, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2That one definitely caught my eye the most.
- xxdesmus, on 10/23/2007, -4/+2There is a big difference between minimal designs and ugly designs. These are ugly designs.
- leondel, on 10/23/2007, -4/+2I like the 403 page,quickly and beautiful minimalistic.
- onkelcommy, on 10/24/2007, -2/+12Cant get the link to work but check out http://screenalicious.com for more design inspiration with more than 9400 screenshots at the moment!
- kickarse, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3Excellent resource that should be dugg!
- MtheoryX, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3You should submit that as an article on it's own.
- vulcanius, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1Preferably sometime after they improve usability.
- yokes, on 10/23/2007, -7/+1How about http://www.smlg.ca (shameless plug). Yay for minimalist design.
- mariachi, on 10/23/2007, -4/+1lame
- dhays2000, on 10/25/2007, -10/+4I HATE WHEN PEOPLE POST CRAP LIKE THIS
- onepostwonder, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1THANK YOU FOR YOUR THOUGHTFUL AND ENGAGING COMMENT
- razishaban, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1I HATE WHEN PEOPLE COMMENT CRAP LIKE THIS
- wheezy360, on 10/23/2007, -1/+1There are a vast number of CSS galleries out there with hundreds of well designed sites to take a gander at just a Googling away. Why the hell is a list of a paltry 25 websites making the bloody front page? This is not news for Pete's sake.
- ItsMyWii, on 10/23/2007, -1/+2Ah, yes, the ever so minimalist forbidden page.
- shadyk8o, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1took the words right out of my mouth.
- bradbaxter, on 10/23/2007, -4/+2The word "minimalist" is sooo trendy these days. If you want to get your link dugg, include the word "minimalist" in the title.
- SobyOne, on 10/23/2007, -3/+1Technically Speaking: 404 is the minimum page required... "nothing found at this web server"
- terryrydzynski, on 10/23/2007, -2/+0Dugg :)
- civperc, on 10/24/2007, -1/+4Um, most of those are pretty crappy
- dickenshit, on 10/23/2007, -1/+1I'm sick of this boring minimalist deco crap. There are many other styles out there, designers, so why are you all so hung up on this one? Someone make something new, and I'll Digg it!
- gandhii, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1because all the corporate douche clients think they want that flavor this year....
- saso, on 10/23/2007, -1/+1is this the same Vandelay from Seinfeld?
- wheezy360, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1And you want to be my latex salesman?!
- newslang, on 10/23/2007, -1/+2There's a fine line between minimalistic and boring. Most of these are boring. Wordpress and None Design are good though.
- Drexus, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1Yes, but some are not boring:
http://www.trinidadexports.com/ - gandhii, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1yea.. that SMOblog one is so laughingly dull... hard to believe this isn't meant to be a joke.
It looks like a default drupal template.
- Drexus, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1Yes, but some are not boring:
- SteelFrog, on 10/24/2007, -0/+13Don't know if I missed any, but here.

- Goobernutz, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Anyone remember that 5k website? Some guy had a contest where you were to create an entire website with the total weight of all components under 5kb! It was interesting what could be accomplished with next to nothing. The site's down at the moment, but Sir Zeldman talks about it here: http://www.alistapart.com/articles/5k/
- lvp1138, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Ah to be expected... they are hosted at Hostgator...
- MrDo, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1They have nothing on ye olde zombo.com.
- regeya, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Many of these are minimal, yes, yet they are poorly designed.
And use nyud.net, people. Take pity on low-traffic sites. - Corporealshift, on 10/24/2007, -4/+0A lot of the "minimal" sites are poorly designed anymore.
A lot of them just need some color. black and white gets too boring to look at too quickly.
And just to be fair, feel free to bash my website too http://www.easytechinfo.com- redivider, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Sweet drop shadows.
