A Guide to Customisable Websites
webcredible.co.uk — Several popular websites have let their homepages be customised by users. New web technologies have made it possible to add slicker customisation interfaces. But, should you do the same? Will it make your website better for users or will it make it unnecessarily complicated? Will users even want this feature on your site?

- skewl, on 02/15/2008, -1/+6Right now Web2.0 and customisable websites are all the rage and that websites like facebook and myspace have gripped the nation with our need for companionship. Again the problem being, how long will this trend last?
- fkr3, on 02/15/2008, -2/+10It's not new web technologies, it's just another use of the same old stuff. And all it does is add bloat. Web 2.0 is more a throwback to dialup than anything else with all the crap websites are throwing at browsers.
- skinjester, on 02/17/2008, -1/+1exactly. like Google Maps. complete waste of time. rolls eyes.
- tringtring, on 02/15/2008, -1/+4I think this "customizable by users" feature will be useful...but as is the case for most ideas, this concept will be really useful only for a subset of web sites - especially those sites that have a number of sections/aspects and for which a user might go frequentcly - typical examples are portals with multiple sections such as mail, chat, stock news, etc,. and news sites with multiple news sections...
Well, iGoogle is quite popular with many of us now, and I think this customizability will become a key feature of the Internet for that segment of web sites... - dotspot, on 02/15/2008, -1/+2User customizability and expandability are the key of the web2.0 scene right now, but i guess the next wave will (could and should) focus on improvement in terms of usability and interoperability with the desktop sector, after all desktop applications aren't dead at all.

- slightlyoffbeat, on 02/15/2008, -0/+5if i want to customize a website, then that means it has to be a website that i would come to...at least on a daily basis...otherwise i wouldn't care

- tommythetomcat, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2iGoogle is my homepage for a good reason quick and easy news and any other random things i wanna see daily
- LunaSoul, on 02/15/2008, -0/+0I use igoogle as my homepage as well. Are there any other customizable webpages available?
- fuxjoey, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1I think it's nice and somewhat necessary to give users this feature. But personally, I don't really use it. And I think it all comes down to the interface design.
- jawnboy, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1Often it is not needed and is just a way to get you to register so they can track every click and keep track of every single thing you do, many people don't mind this behaviour, many do though. I know hey have to make money to pay for their sites (I'm in the same business) but how about not de-humanizing the users while you do it?
That being said, it is sometimes ok, if it is a site that you visit often and offers enough diverse information that the customizations allow you to access it easier and get more use from the site then that is great. What most sites lack however is real content, without decent content fancy customizations don't hold people long. - fancyj, on 02/15/2008, -2/+4a guide to spelling - http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/customiz ...

I've been using it for quite sometime and am just loving it.Goodbye to ***** layouts and excessive ads!
There are plenty of ready made sytles for several sites including digg and reddit and if you are familiar with css then the sky is the limit. - jefrim, on 02/15/2008, -0/+0I've never had a real 'homepage' before, until Netvibes came out. Now, it's my single source for news, email, and even latest diggs. I love it to death!
- Pablitos, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1I think that some sites would benefit from this idea, but that it would put other users off.
- canthraxp, on 02/15/2008, -1/+1How to customize a website?
Learn CSS, and ***** widgets. - erikcunningham, on 02/15/2008, -0/+0Customization will remain popular on social sites where users' choices are visible to the public. Content filtering should also continue to gain popularity as the amount of information available to users on the web increases.
- sam3, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1I think this is definitely a waste of time for non-portal/community sites. If it's not a user's homepage, I don't see them customizing it.
