Are you measuring the wrong thing just because it is easy to measure?

Knowing how many calories you burned on the treadmill (and subsequently how many cheeseburgers you can eat later) make you feel better about yourself. Whether or not that's a good thing or a bad thing is subject to debate.
- burkinaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Folks also measure the wrong thing because they don't have incentive to measure the right thing. For example, a web marketer might get paid to measure the traffic that they generate, but not necessarily the conversions -- that task might fall to, say, a sales dept. Illogical, sure, but without having interdependence and teamwork as a company goal, why should marketing do the work of sales?
