Digg Its Been Almost 3 Months, Can We Get A New Comment System Now?
google.com — It has almost been 3 months and the comment system still as horrendous as the day it came out on June 21st. It is buggy, slow, ugly and annoying as hell to read. It is fairly hard to fallow a conversation. Digg can do better. Digg this up if you want the comment system changed.
- 10245 diggs
- digg it
- byp494, on 10/10/2007, -86/+21I like the old system better. Except that everyone posts REPLIES to get there comments to the top of the list even if it has nothing to do with the original comment. Maybe go back to the old system but LIMIT replies on a post to 1 or 2

- richardhenry, on 10/10/2007, -6/+17i actually vomited when i heard that
- migvel, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8It would be practically the same ***** as now...
- Pssdoff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14How about they just fix the current system?
I am so sick of the same ***** error every time:

- drgmdp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3you just don't understand anything
- davharrington, on 10/10/2007, -12/+239Just to add,, NO ONE WANTS TO SEE THE TROLLS THEY HAVE BLOCKED, plz do something about this.
- AlexBellisBrown, on 10/10/2007, -73/+2I just blocked you. Lol
- ziffel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14You just illustrated his point nicely.
- SniperX, on 10/10/2007, -15/+8I do. Just not by default. I like options. Why do you hate freedom?
- mattmcm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12The problem is that it ISN'T an option. You're forced to see comments from blocked users - there isn't a setting anywhere to completely remove them.
- Myonosken, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3So....Whats the point in blocks then if we can read it?
- mattmcm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12The problem is that it ISN'T an option. You're forced to see comments from blocked users - there isn't a setting anywhere to completely remove them.
- HunterTV, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12I do, so I can show their comments and bury their dumb asses again.
- sigginike90, on 10/10/2007, -17/+5Interesting fact, trolls is a wrong word to use for "internet trolls" because trolls are called trolls because they enthralled their victims. Thrall coming from the icelandic word "þræll" and "Tröll" or troll is actually just a corruption of that word. The right word to use would be, "Þursi" or "Jötunn". So start calling them Thurses or something.
- BarriedaleNick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Actually that is not an interesting fact. Troll does just fine...
- Endemoniada, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6They're trolls because they're trolling for replies, as in fishing. They throw out bait, and wait for commenters to bite.
Thus, a troll. - SiliconRain, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Like Endemaniada said, trolls are called such becuase they 'roll' for a response, like looking for a fight or argument for the sake of it. I think it's a corruption (ie retarded person that can't spell) of trawl, as in trawling for fish.
- akira117, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Ditto
- diggitizer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Slashdot commenting pwns your ass.
Sadly digg seems to have been developed using hacked blog software as a base (?) and it is all to clear that a mere threaded discussion structure, with moderation, and balancing what is shown, is beyond the capabilities of the programmers.
Also, so many stories reach the front page that have been buried to hell, but still reach the front page. This reliance on 'positive discrimination' only gives annoying results.
make things clear, don't play games trying to fix your bad design with 'secret al-gore-ythms'.
Make top navigation dynamic based on tagging. Hardcoded topic list == bad.

- TheWiseNoob, on 10/10/2007, -6/+10I have no idea what you mean. Please, explain?
- wisam, on 10/10/2007, -3/+26Really thanks. It took almost 14 hours for someone to finally (and thankfully) mention it.
- zerhynn, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3You could've brought it up yourself instead of waiting for one of us LEADERS to do it for you, PEON.
- wisam, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2I was about too. The first thing that occurred to me when reading the title was to comment on it. I'm only complaining about the 80 people who dugg the story and not commenting before TheWiseNoob did us all a favor and mentioned it.
- pnyphnz, on 10/16/2007, -1/+6Work, work.
- CatalystGhost, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1I'm digging you up just for saying "peon". No one uses that anymore, that's awesome.

- Kazanoe, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Well, it's been more then half of three months. Does that count?

- WaterDragon, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1if you think in terms of centuries, or even millenia, then you may as well say it has been almost a year.
(If you must be overly dramatic!)
I hated the new commnt system at first, but now I have gotten used to it.
I do think the previous one was adequate...and seemed easier to use.
But I won't DIGGnify this little histrionic, mathematically bogus rant with my Digg! - nimbletimble, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1anyway... moving on..........................
- indorock, on 10/10/2007, -31/+9It's "follow". Learn to spell.
- FalseProphecy, on 10/10/2007, -87/+16The funny part is...this is for comments, not conversations. Get on AIM and get off Digg.
- Homunculiheaded, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8It that's true then why even bother with nested comments? Don't worry, out of respect for your beliefs I do not expect a response.
- FalseProphecy, on 10/10/2007, -6/+5You're misunderstanding my point. Debates and arguments are fine, but strings of comments seem to degenerate into agreements and pointless "LOL"s. I've seen at least 12 comments in a row that were just "That was funny." "Lol." "I laughed." etc. It's stupid.
- terminal157, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3You have no point.
- Soave, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7FalseProphecy,
I like how you just had a conversation with him. On Digg.- FalseProphecy, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1Argument. D:

- lordmetroid, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Comments commenting comments are what conversation is, isn't it?
- Altanar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm pretty sure he meant the crap comments that make this place look worse than slashdot.
- ROFLance, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22FalseProphecy, a/s/l?
- sensical, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Then let's quit calling it a comment system and start calling it a conversation system!
- Sayo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7This is why they call it "Social News". Articles are meant to be discussed.
- terminal157, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2It sucks for comments, too.
- Homunculiheaded, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8It that's true then why even bother with nested comments? Don't worry, out of respect for your beliefs I do not expect a response.
- adsoftheworld, on 10/10/2007, -82/+53I like the way it is.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/10/2007, -17/+33Yeah I've finally gotten used to the new comment system and I like it. It's a bit slower if you're really into reading every single comment, but It's more organized and I like being able to reply to replies.
- mighty_mouth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+48The podcast section's system meets the needs of all humankind.
1. You can reply to replies.
2. It's as fast as the old system.- ShugNinx21, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15It's also more pleasing to the eye.
- abid786, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14"but It's more organized and I like being able to reply to replies."
Except for those times when the reply button disappears; or those times where it doesn't work; or even those times when it double-posts. - aluminumpork, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I don't mind the current comment system, it's EXTREMELY annoying when stories with hundreds of comments load and Firefox assumes the script has stopped responding, freezing my browser for a good 3 - 5 seconds. Sometimes I have to click the "Continue Script" button, which is also annoying.
- mighty_mouth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+48The podcast section's system meets the needs of all humankind.
- Machuse, on 10/10/2007, -18/+6I agree, I don't see the big deal.
- rockinrimmer, on 10/10/2007, -17/+6Yes I agree i like the new comment system. Buried!
- Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -7/+5I think it's not perfect with more clicking around, but it's way better than 50 top posted replies on 1000+ digg stories. That was just horrible, scrolling down and down to replies, and then less people had even bothered. And of course, it loads much faster now.
- macweirdo42, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11The current system is slow and buggy as hell - that's my complaint.
- pkkid, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I another vote for it. I like it, I clicked the "OK, This is lame button" :)
- sensical, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2I think a button that recursively expands replies to a post would make it easier.
- brownr21, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I like it also. It's not THAT slow, and it's visually appealing. I looked at reddit's, it sucks balls. Slashdot's is MUCH worse.
It's pretty much impossible to find your comments you made in every nested/threaded forum ever made.- Endemoniada, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Except that every other forum ever made has a function to track your comments, something Digg lacks. Sure, they show the diggs where you MADE a comment, but there's no way to ever find that again without using your browser's built-in search function. That's stupid.
It's also bloated and slow, and is nowhere near the quality of the Slashdot system. They should watch and learn from those who've done it longer, not ***** everything up just out of spite. That's stupid.
It's been several months since this new system was put into action, yet there are multiple show stopper bugs that have yet to be fixed, or even acknowledged. That's stupid.
Add those together, and you should see that while the Digg comment system works, it does so very barely. It's horribly slow on 90% of people's machines, it's buggy, it's ugly and nonintuitive and there are so many better systems out there they could have been inspired by.
Digg should swallow their pride and listen to those who've been in the game for so much longer. They know a thing or two, and don't mind sharing.
- Endemoniada, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Except that every other forum ever made has a function to track your comments, something Digg lacks. - darkyplasma, on 10/10/2007, -34/+16tis' only good till tis' gets pis'd off because a lot of people want to reply to the first person and be at the top. i like the digg comment system right now. but if they make it any better, that would be great! xD
- OisinT, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5what?
- drgmdp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3speak properly
- masterkenobi, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3681- Carraige returns disappear in comment replies.
2- It's impossible to find old comments you have made if it's buried in the comment tree.- SweetMercury, on 10/10/2007, -34/+3My carraige returns disappear as well. Is that on our end or on Digg's end?
- SweetMercury, on 10/10/2007, -23/+5My carraige returns disappear as well. Is that on our end or on Digg's end?
- indorock, on 10/10/2007, -17/+21. true. I thought it was a Safari/Mac only issue, but i guess Windows ppl notice it too
2. Not impossible. 4-step process: 1. set filter to "sort by date (show all)" 2. Expand Full Tree 3. Scroll to bottom, make sure all comments are showing, if there are over 50. 4, Ctrl/Cmd + F voila ;) Easy as....well at least it's possible- Myonosken, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14No because buried comments do not expand, so you have to manually search through all buried comments.
- ph3rny, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2I just buried your comment and I can't find mine :(
- drgmdp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3what part of DISAPPEAR you don't understand?

- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -6/+93The biggest sign of a broken comment system is if you can triple post and ZOMG guess what Digg lets you do :/
- GliTCH82, on 10/10/2007, -1/+37Congratulations! This is the first (and probably last) time your message will ever intentionally be Dugg up three times in a row. NEW HIGH SCORE!
- meatmcguffin, on 11/12/2007, -5/+92The biggest sign of a broken comment system is if you can triple post
- socokoolaid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8It's happened to me before. In my case what happened is I posted, the page seemed to update, but my new post wasn't there. I've since learned to refresh the whole page, and my new post appears, but if you don't your post isn't there so you think it didn't go through and post it again.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12The easier way of doing it is to just click more than once on 'submit comment'; the javascript is buggy enough to let you get away with it.
The really odd part is that if you double click a comment thumb it warns you, so why doesn't digg warn about double comment posting?- rebopper, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13lets try it out

- archlich, on 10/10/2007, -1/+484. Comments past 50 cannot be replied to.
5. Cannot read comments after they have been dugg down.
6. Cannot read some replies randomly.
7. Cannot reply randomly. - merreborn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11I use a macbook at home and a PC at work. I have the disappearing carriage return issue on both platforms. So it's not OS-specific.
- keyo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0No *****!
- wigginz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9completely agree... we need a way to isolate comments within their context like reddit does... also having an inbox when someone replies to your comment like reddit would be great.... hmm, guess I meant to say do it like reddit does damnit.
- wendelgee2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1The inbox is genius and would solve a lot of the "I can't find my buried comment" problems. The other option is to make the whole page searchable somehow so you can hunt down your handle (on reddit you can do this pretty easily).
- skidooer, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13. Captas often do not work. Playing the audio version reveals a pause between two characters of just static.
- ryan83189, on 01/06/2008, -0/+0I don't know why you got dugg down, it's true
- LadyA, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Cos it's nothing to do with the comment system?
- ryan83189, on 01/06/2008, -0/+0I don't know why you got dugg down, it's true
- ldkronos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Sometimes a post doesn't load at all. Many times I've been unable to find my replies to a story, even if I expand all comments. I'll go into my profile and it will show that I posted there, but loading up the page and it's nowhere to be found.
- ChildeRoland420, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25You buried 1a comment 1and your reply is under it. Digg will not 1autom1atic1ally exp1and comments th1at h1ave been buried.
Sorry 1about broken keybo1ard. - Foamator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18^ Dugg for the broken keyboard!
- 35263526, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9ChildeRoland420, that's not always the case. I've taken to manually searching for "show comment" in stories after expanding the tree and I still find my comments disappearing.
- caressmedown, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1YES
- ChildeRoland420, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25You buried 1a comment 1and your reply is under it. Digg will not 1autom1atic1ally exp1and comments th1at h1ave been buried.
- astrosmash, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18The biggest reason for the comment system change, so they said, was the bandwidth usage involved with reloading the entire page of comments.
Well, the only reason people were reloading the comment page is because digg doesn't offer a way to follow your comments and conversations. So what do these geniuses do? They go from making it difficult to find your comments to making it *impossible*. And you *still* need to reload the entire page to update the conversation. And if you reply to a comment, your reply is hidden the next time you reload. What the *****!
They managed to ***** up the *one* compelling feature of Digg's comment system, which is the immediate feedback you get on your comments, either through diggs or through reply. At they same time they made everything else slower, uglier, and buggier.- caressmedown, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Very well said, the page will expire often. What the use of ajax if i still can't see a live update of comments
- GliTCH82, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What really gets me is they have all these new technologies out of Digg labs that look awesome. Why not have a live view comments page similar to the live view submissions and diggs that are available in no less than 5 different graph styles?
- caressmedown, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Very well said, the page will expire often. What the use of ajax if i still can't see a live update of comments
- jonrad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Site to see all the comments you've made:
http://www.neaveru.com/digg- akira117, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1If they have kept all my comments stored, I have 1274 total comments ^ ^
- unitedstatians, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If only these comment statistics were implemented in my "advance profile control panel" it would be awesome.
- pault107, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Also http://www.duggornot.com which shows your story submissions as well as your comments.
- smellinator, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5It's not impossible to find comments that are buried. It's not easy, but certainly possible. Here's how:
At the top of the comments, there's a drop down. Set it to "Sort by Date (Show All)" and then click the button slightly to the left of it that says Expand Full Tree. Then you'll have all the comments. Do a Control-F (for Find), and search for your name (or whatever).
Of course, you'll never find this answer, because you can't find your question without my instructions! - jonrad, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Actually, what I just noticed when using the comment site above is that the carriage returns are saved in the database, but just displayed in the comments. For example, my comment above shows with a carriage return on neaveru.com/digg (as it should) but doesn't show with a carriage return here... strange
- WaterDragon, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4I agree with #2....but WTF is a 'carriage return'?
Oh ...you are still speaking in terms of old typewriters! Realize that many of the younger computer users will have no idea WTF you are referring to. (I'm NOT one of the younger ones.)
Uh Oh....my words are too light...looks like I'll have to change that damn ribbon again!- carpespasm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3just open the cartridge and drip a few drops of water in it. always worked on my old one.
- gameforge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Perhaps you should brush up on your computer lingo. A "carriage return" is also the name of ASCII character 13 (0x0D), a common character in the "newline" sequence on many (mainly older) operating systems. Granted it would be a little more clear if you call them "newlines", but the term "carriage return," while obviously coming from typewriter lingo, is also very much a computer term.
I don't believe in using simple vocabulary around young/uninformed people. I mean, you don't expect them to look up all of the tens of thousands of words they're expected to know in a dictionary, do you? How else do you learn what various words mean? If they can't figure out the meaning from the context, Wikipedia has a brief but useful summary of where the term came from, and what it means regarding software. They have a much larger article on newlines, for the interested.
Now stop calling me old. ;)
- OneAndOnlySnob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yeah seriously. I can't believe they haven't even fixed the carriage return thing. I bet it would take 20 minutes TOPS to fix that particular bug.
- unitedstatians, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2carriage return thing?
- WildBil, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2All I can say in the current systems favor is "I was able to find this in the first page of comments." All I can say to judge by is "I did not bother to comment otherwise as I know under the current system I will never be able to find even "This" comment again, and if they change the system this will have to be my most dugg comment ever. So its not even worth saying DIGG ME again!
- TheCount, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Am I the only one that can't reply at all when I sort comments by most diggs?
- dallascorbin504, on 10/10/2007, -47/+6if it aint broke...dont fix it.
- hardD, on 10/10/2007, -2/+44it is broken
- gravis86, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10I think he was talking about the old system. It wasn't broken; why did they have to "fix" it with this new one?
- drgmdp, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1me, conformist? no way!!
- hardD, on 10/10/2007, -2/+44it is broken

- socokoolaid, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9Yeah, I kinda like it. It does seem to have some bugs, and carry over some old annoyances from the previous systems (^^see above^^), but I for sure like the quick page loads and new comment structure.
- gameforge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Obviously, everyone is supposed to use Digg the way the designers dream of us using it - we load a story, and read the first comment. Maybe we don't like that comment, so we skip over the 37 replies to the second one to see if we like that comment. Nobody will *ever* want to have all of the story's comments on a single page. See, they gave us that "Show All" option, figuring the one or two of us who want to use it won't mind a few bugs.
Here you are applauding the quick page loads and being Dugg, yet much of the bickering above is about the near-browser-crashing slow page loads.
I think Digg needs to select one hundred Digg veterans and ask them to volunteer test new site designs. They can't possibly enjoy reading all of these comments ripping apart all of their hard work, it can only be to their advantage... I don't think the problem with bugfixing Digg has to do with ease of coding, but more taking the live site down and swapping the code and updating the database. I think it's a tedious, risky and aggravating process for them; moreover, I don't think it's anyone's ideal day at work to turn it into the smooth, simple, failsafe process that it should be, so they just avoid patching things at all costs.

- WaterDragon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I don't mind it either...but it might be nice if there was some kind of little symbol next to the parent comment showing me that I had commented in the tree under it.
It can be4 hard to relocate coments before the damn, too short edit timer runs out.
Why can't there be a 5 minute timer for editing? Is that a problem? - rbowes, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Me too. I think the new system is better. I'd rather be able to reply directly to someone, and have to deal with all the expanding and whatnot than have to post a reply 300 comments away from the person I'm replying to.
- terminal157, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Well, it's not a bad concept, but the execution of the concept has enough things seriously wrong with it to declare it broken.

- tomboy501, on 10/10/2007, -4/+196The main thing I don't like is that some of the best snarky replies to buried comments get buried too, no matter how much they are dugg up...and that's a shame.
..and I still think the lines and reply boxes clutter up the site.
I don't dislike the new comments as much as I used to back when it first changed. I know there have been some small improvements since then...but, I mostly think I have just gotten used to it. I also agree with AKBryant's comment above. Podcast section comment style is the way to go- patm1987, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11I have to agree that it's annoying to not see the dugg up comments replying to buried ones
But my only gripe with the reply to this comment thing is that it's not universal. ie, it's positioned one way if there are no replies, and then totally differently if there are replies. So I end up replying to the wrong person sometimes. If they just found a decent way of representing the threads, i'd be happy (I like slashdot's new system, but I still prefer to browse the digg comments and feel more comfortable chatting on digg). - Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7"The main thing I don't like is that some of the best snarky replies to buried comments get buried too, no matter how much they are dugg up...and that's a shame."
To solve that, we'd be moving more to Slashdot's way of doing things. Over there, even if you're doing a reply, if it was rated high enough, it'll be show anyway, despite the troll or whatever. Not that I'm really looking for snarky replies if I'm reading a story, but it can be useful for other kinds of replies. - ozydingo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3"Podcast section comment style is the way to go"
Add the ability to collapse replies to a comment, and perhaps inline text-box replies (so i can re-read what I'm replying to) and I'm with you 100%. - GliTCH82, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3I stopped burying comments altogether unless they were in the last level just because of that. I have no doubt that other people do the same.

- astrosmash, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1No it isn't. At least before I could be fairly confident that if I reply to a comment, the original author could read it (likewise, of someone replies to my comment, I'll find it).
That isn't the case at all anymore. What's the point of a comment system if you can't follow a conversation?
(p.s. Don't bother replying to this comment. I'll never find it again once I reload)
- astrosmash, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1No it isn't. At least before I could be fairly confident that if I reply to a comment, the original author could read it (likewise, of someone replies to my comment, I'll find it).
- billyoneal, on 10/10/2007, -12/+24I like the current system, but I think there should be an option (as a cookie or something) that tells the comment to load all the comments, so you arent waiting every time you want to expand the tree.

- radu79, on 10/10/2007, -2/+32The new system is incredibly slow on Opera. I don't know about other browsers, but it takes forever for Opera to load more than, say, 100 comments. The old style was faster, didn't require as many clicks as it does now, and the information flow was better.
- Ramble, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Same here. Anything above a few hundred comments and bam, it's slow.
- thelocus, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1That's interesting. I use Opera and have never had a problem with the comments.
- radu79, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I have two GB of Ram, an AMD X2 64 4600+, and I am not running many applications in the backgrouns. And it still is slow as hell. If I press ctrl+f to look for my comments, it can take seconds for the menu to appear, especially while the comments are still loading.
- WaterDragon, on 10/10/2007, -13/+7Well... why don't you join the rest of us in the brave new world and GET FIREFOX?
- brainboy77, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2seriously, he's right. these problems don't occur on firefox. although i'd like to point out that Opera is actually newer than Firefox.
- antiNeo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Things are even worse in Konqueror. The animation of opening comments is jerky and it takes forever to load. In order to open comments, you have to click twice, which is very irritating. Sometimes the reply boxes work, and sometimes they don't. There's no problem with the podcast's comment system, though.
- alkajazz, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2Firefox freezes up every time I load a digg page.
- hardD, on 10/10/2007, -4/+23And add an option to sort comments by less diggs! The comments that get dugg down alot are always fun to read.
- skidooer, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0Agreed. There are good comments getting dugg down just because people don't agree with that was posted, not because the comment was poorly thought out. It really makes the whole moderation system useless.
- WaterDragon, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3Do you also look for the lowest rated restaurants to eat in?

- podgey22, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7If you pulled you head out for a minute and looked around a little, you'd see no end of suggestions. Everybody on the internet (and their brother) has bitched about the Digg comment system, one way or another.
- Darkhacker, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4The old one or the one currently in the Podcast section would be just fine. Either one in my opinion. We don't need to code a new one. Although if nothing changes, I'm tempted as hell to start my own version that uses the Digg API but with a frontend that doesn't suck.

- synthesist, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9The new comment system has the big advantage of discouraging people from commenting out of place, however it could benefit a great deal by changing as simple as auto-expanding all nested comments by default.
- ShugNinx21, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6From what I've noticed since the change, it doesn't really deter people from commenting out of place.
- Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Unfortunately that could make the page load much much slower, but I agree it'd give a better overview. Slashdot's way is reasonable too, it tries to weigh the disadvantage of lots of replies and slow loads with showing it all by using thresholds. I think that could work out pretty well here. You wouldn't miss out on replies to dugg down comments, but still have all the -10 junk buried, or whatever else you'd configure the threshold to be.
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2It encourages people to comment out of place since they know few people will ever hit the expand comment button.
- astrosmash, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4It discourages people from commenting, period.
(P.S. Don't bother replying to this message. I'll never find again once I reload the page). - lukes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The best way of discouraging people from commenting out of place I've seen is at Reddit, where the threads will move up to the top of the comments page, or sink, depending on how popular a thread is. So if a thread is near the bottom, it could rise to the top where more people see it. Lots of random comments on the top thread would just cause the thread to sink to the bottom. That way, you also get to read the most interesting and insightful threads first as a reader.

- everlaster, on 10/10/2007, -11/+2I really can't see what's the problem with the way the comments system is now.
Somebody shed some light on the issue going on for me please?- siszam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You can't find your comments when they are buried in the tree and you have to load comments. Just show the them all from the start. It was fine and they had to go change it.
- gameforge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I've never really seen a comprehensive list. In the old days (long story short), you had parent threads to which you could reply, and that was it - you could not reply to anything but a top level comment. People complained forever about this, so what you see is Digg's answer to the complaining, which is itself just flat broken. From what I've experienced and read, I'll try to break much of it down:
1) The site seems to eat newlines when arbitrary (random?) conditions exist, but only sometimes - the newlines get saved, just not always displayed. While I haven't experienced it personally, some people seem to complain about newline characters randomly showing up in the middle of comments.
2) You cannot see a popular comment, not even your own comment, if any of its parents are below your threshold. You absolutely have to manually scroll and expand all comments below your threshold until you find yours; a very tedious process if there's a lot of comments. It defeats at least half the purpose of replying to a post if the parent will never be able to find the comment again.
3) While comments below your threshold can usually be replied to, its replies cannot usually be replied to. The link just isn't there.
4) When you manually click on "Show N replies," sometimes it shows less than N replies - an obvious bug. It seems to be more of a problem when showing replies to a comment which is below your threshold. Sometimes it will drop down a blue box, but there's no reply inside - no username, no digg count, nothing.
5) Page load times are ridiculous if you have a low threshold/show everything. Most of these other threshold bugs can be worked around by just showing all comments unconditionally and all levels of all threads, but then you get to wait a moment (sometimes over a minute) during which your browser is SO busy parsing JavaScript that you can't use it at all - every time you visit a front page story on Digg.
6) If you post a new thread in a story which has 50 or more prior threads, your thread may be handicapped - it may not have a reply button, and it often won't show up at all.
7) "Show x - y out of z comments" at the bottom of the page doesn't work as expected - you will usually get a fraction of the replies that it indicates (i.e. showing replies 51 - 100 might pop up a whopping twelve more comments). Sometimes it changes if you close your browser and come back...
8) There are unintuitive boxes and lines strewn about colored with seemingly random shades of blue, making it difficult to follow large threads. The boxes change shape and look differently depending on your threshold, whether you've personally dugg or buried a comment, or how many comments come before it, among other factors.
9) The reply button location is inconsistent - sometimes it's after replies, sometimes it's right at the bottom of the comment. Apparently they put it it where your reply will go - which is confusing at best, but it has to do with having a hidden reply box underneath each comment, and the comment being embedded in the page without reloading when you submit it. I believe this embedded reply system is also the reason for the ridiculous page load times.
I use Firefox on Windows and Kubuntu, and (occsionally) Internet Explorer, and Digg is equally broken on all of them as near as I can tell.
Digg has ALWAYS needed a feedback/meta section to discuss stuff like this - it's stupid to have to Digg submissions about how broken Digg is. Plus, it washes away after a short time with the rest of today's submissions.

Yet I have my problems with the new system, It's hard to "Reply to the Original Poster"! Just gets confusing...and yes the captcha thing is a little spotty at times. "I swear I typed it in right this time". Though I think I made a good argument, no one will ever see this if whom I replied to gets dugg down!!! Unless they want to deal with the long loading times for replies. Probably not from what I hear now...oh well.----And yeah Captcha just got me...WTF...I did it RIGHT!!! Oh wait thats a capital X on a 90 degree axis, funny I thought it was a PLUS SIGN! WTF! And Captcha isn't in the spell check....Funny *****.
- marcz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Seriously. What's wrong with the wontstoptalking guy. 60 seconds my ass.

- WaterDragon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2My comments always appear immediately.
- djsqueak, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7I don't know why they have tree-based views for comment threads. Would it be so hard to organize this the way that forums are organized and simply add a "quote" option for replies?
I personally prefer my threads presented in chronological order, I mean, at least give us the option to change the view. Most of us have used and like standard web forums so that style of threading would seem the logical choice.- unitedstatians, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Pardon my geekiness, "standard web forums".
This isn't a FORUM
This is DIGG ! !
[*does a dramatization of a roundhouse kick to the neck*]
- unitedstatians, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Pardon my geekiness, "standard web forums".
- jessebeans, on 10/10/2007, -12/+3it's not that bad...
so-- i am going against the grain on this-- cos I'm not much of a 'fallower'- WaterDragon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Seemed like you were going to make a good point....but then you went and made up a word that has no meaning for the rest of us.
(Fallower)- MaxD, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2He was just poking fun at the story summary.
- WaterDragon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Seemed like you were going to make a good point....but then you went and made up a word that has no meaning for the rest of us.
- spyd3rweb, on 10/10/2007, -7/+6dunno if i like how comments get buried so easily, it kind of removes any dissenting opinons, that and the article bury feature is being heavily missued by a lot of people to silence stuff they dont like.
- Typhoon2009, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14The old system was fine. Cluttered? Yeah, but I'll take my browser freezing for a few seconds in exchange for easy to read conversations and whatnot.
- sundancekid503, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3It could use a little touch up here and there, but overall I think the comment system is working pretty well. We don't need a "new" comment system, they should just fine tune this one a bit. (Like not removing carriage returns)
- dep01, on 10/10/2007, -9/+2What's the problem? I like it. It took Digg THIS long to add pagination to the commenting system. Don't hold your breath on another overhaul.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Pagination of the comments is one of the problems. I never go to the second page.
- TRENT310, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I will be OK with the comment system so long as there's a way to CONFIGURE IT! I don't like pagination, because I'm reading it on a computer and i'm not printing the comments out. Pagination makes it seem like it's a multi-page blog, and worse, they're not even real pages. If you follow a link, and then come back, you're at page 1 again.
I don't like hiding threaded comments. It takes time to load them individually, and it also takes more effort to append /all to the URI.
I'd also like to be able to delete my comments.
- skyfire1, on 10/10/2007, -9/+5With the old comment system everyone would reply to the first post for diggs.
- over9, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2"fallow" quite a typo there.
- WillJS, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0I agree. "A" isn't close to "o"
- Nobiting, on 10/10/2007, -6/+20WE NEED A PICTURE SECTION AND AUTOMATIC CACHING!!!!
- koregaonpark, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2They're not listening. Trust me.
- regeya, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14Yeah. Just make it work as close to Slashcode's comment system as possible, and all will be well.
- unitedstatians, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1If you want /. go to /..

- floatingpoints, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11If you click the link at the bottom to view more discussions, 9/10 times it does nothing.. except disappear.
- DiscoPotato, on 10/10/2007, -14/+10***** the comment system
- torched, on 10/10/2007, -8/+28this comment system sucks.
- diiii, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Every time I want to view all the comments in a logical expanded format, I have to wait 30 to 60 seconds for Firefox to give me the "unresponsive script" dialog box, then click on expand, then wait another good minute for the unresponsive script dialog box to pop up again, then another 30 seconds or so before I can actually do anything. There's no reason this should be such a pain in the ass. (And then when I went to post this comment, it said "Your session has expired, please refresh the page before commenting." So I had to go through all that ***** twice. This is friggin retarded.)
- teichenauer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I just got a "Your session has expired, please refresh the page before commenting." and it is irritating.
- BrokenVisage, on 10/10/2007, -18/+4Let's hear it for OPINION and PERSPECTIVE! The comment system is FINE you *****, I like how it doesn't try to load every damn comment when I click on a story and that it hides the mostly worthless commentary to popular posts in replies. Now, a way to customize how YOU like the comment system to be would be nifty, but you don't speak for all of us on your misguided hatred. Dugg down, obviously.
- canewediggit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2oh sweet irony
- mirzar, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18why cant they switch it to the podcast comment system>
- skidooer, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4Server load. Presumably the Podcast section isn't as busy.
- unitedstatians, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1I don't want to see 1000+ comments loaded on one tab ! think about digg's bandwidth.Digg.com is social news bookmarking provided free of charge to end-users.
- marcz, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Is the Podcast system really that good? Why not forum like as some user above suggested? With quotes and stuff.
- Ungh, on 10/10/2007, -54/+9Stop your *****' bitching all the time. How many of you actually contribute money to keep Digg running??? It doesn't run for free? So, most of you bitching are freeloaders - SHUT THE ***** UP, YOU'RE NOT PAYING FOR IT, IT'S SOMEONE ELSE'S MONEY!!!!!!
- DiscoPotato, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20Totally. The high amount of traffic the users provide and the ads on this site are irrelevant.
- DietMountainDew, on 10/10/2007, -5/+5Buried because Ungh is an ignorant *****.
If Digg's userbase declines, as I am sure they have lost some members due to the new comment system, investors are less interested, Digg gets less ad views/clicks, Digg makes less money and goes out of business.
The fact you couldn't figure that out on your own is very sad. - Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Jeez, let people have an opinion, will you...? Who cares if it's for free -- this discussion is raised because they care for the quality of Digg, and the admins have in the past been welcoming to criticism. Why should a free service be worsened by silencing opinions and ideas on improvement? That doesn't benefit anyone.
- podgey22, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11Freeloaders? You shut the ***** up. What would digg be without people to submit stories, digg them and bitch about the comment system? NOTHING!
- DynamiteMonkey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3So glad this has been brought up again. I have my settings on auto-expand and still dislike the system, not because I'm picky about style, but because it's less usable than the old one. People still reply to the first post and people don't thread enough for it to be worth anything over @username:message. Opening comments on a relatively new and powerful PC can sometimes take 30 seconds of solid browser freezing (including other tabs I may have been using) and sometimes crashes the browser entirely. I pretty much avoid large conversations as a result.
I don't give a ***** how it looks, just make it work as well as the old one on a purely technical level. - carrett, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Call me a troll, but I've always loved /.'s comment system much more than any of the digg systems.
- Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Not a troll IMO, personally I think Slash's system offers a good balance between page load times and hiding crap by offering viewing thresholds. That would solve digg's current problem with hidden replies even if they're to +20 or so, just because the original post got dugg down. It would also preserve the page load times reasonably well by still hiding the dugg down stuff.
- bshellenberg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2And the best part - /. isn't a news site for Apple and is void of the paid astrosurfers posting useless stories about the new iMac that has a 20gb larger hard drive than last week.
- thomasprebble, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Agreed. Perhaps a move back to something simpler, Digg. To be honest I'm getting sick of all this "cool" Web 2.0 crap. If Digg can crash Firefox (an incredibly stable browser in my opinion) then something is seriously wrong. Move back to something more "static" like Slashdot's comment system
- Wyzard, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I prefer Slashdot's comment system too. It notifies me of replies and moderation of my comments, so I don't have to manually go back and look up each comment I've made, and it allows markup so I can use italics for emphasis where appropriate.
Reddit's comment system is decent too, and I've been making a point of visiting Reddit before Digg lately.
- colinwilson, on 10/10/2007, -13/+6Am I the only one that has no problem with the new comment system and has no idea what the fuss is?
- joefreeza, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yes.
