Google Search gets a facelift
downloadsquad.com — A little nip-and-tuck has gone on at Google Search recently. As we mentioned yesterday in the Googleholic, Google has been testing a slight rework for their search interface and we had a Javascript workaround to see it.
- 1110 diggs
- digg it
- jmp478, on 10/12/2007, -7/+92Google looks the same for me.
- wisam, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32me too. But again, maybe it needs time to propagate.
- lustforblood, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12yep same exact thing. just give it time maybe? not sure. hopefully it works for everyone, cause google is a bit basic looking for the most visited website
- thekms, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Yeah, me too, I see no difference (be it my personalized homepage or standard Google). I cleared all cookies and cache as well...
- quomen, on 10/12/2007, -21/+3I buried this as inaccurate.
wtf are they talking about, dont - TriZz, on 10/12/2007, -29/+13@ the submitter: A name like that will get you expelled from school these days!
- quomen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18@trizz,
he's been around for a while. - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3I don't use Google any more... I use searchmash.
Actually, it has some nice new features, for example it seems to be using the 'did you mean?' results to automatically show corrected search patterns. - seventoes, on 10/12/2007, -5/+34Go to google.com, and paste this into your address bar:
javascript:document.cookie="PREF=ID=fddb01133a87d314:LD=en:CR=2:TM=1177334998:LM=1177334998:GM=1:S=OOg0FEVzpPplxe9J;path=/;domain=.google.com"
Then you'll see some crap, just go back to google and search away!
To go back to normal, just clear your cookies. - quomen, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16k it's definitely not working for me..
and you made me clear my cookies for nothing.
now i gotta re-enter my passwords for a trillion pages.
UGH - TriZz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Sorry...I guess it was a bad joke. I was making fun of the school who expelled that kid for being "quiet" and "Korean" rather than the submitter. My apologies.
- donwilson2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7These comments prove that no one reads the articles.
- mhill110, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3Buried as inaccurate. Google looks EXACTLY the same as ever.
- Chaos12, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1I think all that was added is the new pop up menu when you press "more >>"
- tunacubes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Guys.. go read the article. it shows how it changed.
This is a random image of what google used to be. Pic isnt mine, so I dont know how it'll last due to the Digg effect (Sorry if I ruin your site..) http://www.johnston.co.uk/screenshots/GoogleSERPs-SSL-Before.jpg
and compare it to http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.downloadsquad.com/media/2007/04/googlefacelift.jpg
The top is slightly different, where it says stuff like Video, Images, - BeyondGoodNEvil, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Google hasn't looked the same since I installed numerous scripts for the firefox extension Stylish. There's scripts to automatically append the next page of search to the bottom so you can continuously scroll (without having to click page 2, 3, 4 etc.), and script to keep the search box at the top of the screen the whole time, as well as get rid of useless space. Do a search for FF add-on "Stylish", and it'll have a link to the scripts which are downloadable much like greasemonkey scripts.
- stockjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Same old look. Googles popularity was partially due to its clean and simple interface, but I know the marketing people are just waiting to pounce on the page and junk it up. It could use a bit of a facelift and lose the almost amateur looking Corel draw look, but very minimal changes. Maybe just Polish up the logo a bit etc.
- norbiu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Copied that thing in my address bar. It looks much better now!
Make one line out of this:
javascript:document.cookie="PREF=ID=fddb01133a87d314:LD=en:CR=2:TM=1177334998:LM=1177334998:
GM=1:S=OOg0FEVzpPplxe9J;path=/;domain=.google.com" - Eisim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1*cough* - old news - http://blog.outer-court.com/archive/2007-04-23.html#n52
downloadsquad... wth?
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8I don't see any differences when I go to google.com.
- tmcpheeters, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36Want to test-drive Google's latest redesign experiment? Just go to Google.com and enter the following in your browser address bar, then hit return:
javascript:document.cookie="PREF=ID=fddb01133a87d314:LD=en:CR=2:TM=1177334998:LM=1177334998:GM=1:S=OOg0FEVzpPplxe9J;path=/; domain=.google.com" - xXVirusXx, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3You need to clear your browser's cookies for it to work.
- cam2009, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14tmcpheeters method worked for me. I don't know why everyone talking about the javascript/cookie fix is being dugg down and everyone saying they don't see anything is being dugg up, how about you try it first?
looks pretty nice. more noticeable than I thought it would be, but still subtle and simple. And the "mail" link is nice, never understood why they left that out of their front page links. - kingfelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thanks, the javascript worked for me, too. It looks a bit nicer now. If you think about it, it's really just a menu bar for Google's web services. Great ideas stand the test of time, I guess. Now if it would just work seamlessly like a desktop app.... when I click the different services, it should flip back and forth all ajaxy-like without opening any new windows or anything. At that point, you've sold me.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It was being dugg down b/c it wasn't working before (atleast for me). Sorry about the misinformation.
- tmcpheeters, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36Want to test-drive Google's latest redesign experiment? Just go to Google.com and enter the following in your browser address bar, then hit return:
- ElbridgeGerry, on 10/12/2007, -34/+5Google redesign?
Next thing we know, Digg users will turn on Apple.- raptordrew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22...that comment makes no sense.
- arbulus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5what does that even mean?
- aquadoctorbob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's a lame attempt at a "hell freezes over" scenario.
- allenu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Wow, this is the rarest of cases: the joke is so lame that explaining it actually does make it funnier.
- sdenike, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Works for me. Nothing to special though
- FeartheKnight, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2wachu talkin bout
- Sooozie, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0I saw the new search options...and I noticed that now (as a Google member) I can add a pretty theme to my homepage ^_^
- ElbridgeGerry, on 10/12/2007, -17/+3Delete your cookies to see it.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Which cookie exactly?
- FeartheKnight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41I will do nothing of the sort. Me and my cookies is friends. I eat them.
- Spyder810, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Google has been like this for a while now....
- KineticShampoo, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1Yep nothing new here.
ps. Does everyone have to deal with the CAPTCHA or is it just me? :S- zackkitzmiller, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6It's just you. And yeah... Looks the ***** same
- eelsid, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Nothing is different that I can tell.
- sirmasterboy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Hmm, i also don't see anything different...
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is common... Google often don't roll out a change immediately, so you can really stop posting.
Actually, often they only make very few people get the new version at first as they're still testing the design and its performance, as a sort of public preview. The cookie trick above might work..- bseay, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1that sucks
- dustblaaze, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I do. the "G" and "E" in Google look about 2 cm bigger.
Looks alot better now. - Piyh, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Buried for lame. Doesn't even explain how to see it.
- osarhan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2hmmm if it ain't broken don't fix it!
- onlygb, on 10/12/2007, -16/+1You guys still use Google? You should be using: http://givemebackmygoogle.com/
It automatically pre-populates the removal of all the advertising rubbish. Now, please give me a thumb's up!- u8myfoood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5its not the same without the ads... although annoying its a part of google that is never to be removed!
- sTiVo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1spam alert.
- PromaneX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And how are google to make money and survive without those adverts?
- mymate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1did javascript thing cleared cache and deleted google cookies - no change
whats the huge deal about it getting a face lift anyway - as long as it gets me desent results in a presentable way which it is already doing why change? - sepherenia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Got it to work - and while I like the subtle gradient around the 'Results 1 - 10' section, it all feels slightly unbalanced and the top's a bit cramped. Is it just me? Needs some more tweaking before it goes live, methinks.
- notjamt9000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I've been noticing lots of changes recently. It went like this for a while:
http://personales.ya.com/casitasoler/james/google.png- Gzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Nice toolbars...
- Hobotime, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Someone better digg this guy up. He is using Ubuntu.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -1/+11You must have a stick of RAM dedicated to Firefox use.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Toolbars:

Google Toolbar
I dunno that he needs a stick of ram dedicated to it, Firefox runs better on Linux & he's also using SwiftFox. - gavintlgold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He needs to get Folding@home ... his cpu is not using its full potential! ;)
- niradg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1my Google has a raccoon(other animal?) serving me dinner
- Takteek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If there is one thing I have learned through all my attempts at web design, it's that having too many horizontal lines on a page makes it look cluttered. The underlines on the google services links, the light blue line under them, the long search box, the gradient bar with lines above and below, and the underline on each of the results makes the page look ugly in my opinion. At the very least they should remove the underline from the top links.
- truax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Kind of off topic..but look at the pic Google used for its "new" Web History feature..
http://www.google.com/history/images/screen_wh_small.gif
DIGG! - Gzero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I like the old one better, this one is too bright.
- TSSaloic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Nice.
- Carsonauto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think the beauty of Google is it's simplicity. Regardless of it's features (Which are nice anyways), it is clean, and gets the job done. Whatever Google does, I hope they don't "snazz" it up too much.
- Carsonauto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Hey, I got it to work.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v446/carsonauto/04-25-2007_20-54-52.png
For those who want it. I entered the code:
javascript:document.cookie="PREF=ID=fddb01133a87d314:LD=en:CR=2:TM=1177334998:LM=1177334998:GM=1:S=OOg0FEVzpPplxe9J;path=/; domain=.google.com"
Then cleared my cookies, and it worked.- noahs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2heh get some themes
- notjamt9000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4artisanalcheese.com, great domain name
- vladtepes86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Do not like the new interface as you cannot jump to the deeper (2nd, 3rd..etc) page of the search unless you scroll to the bottom. If I am repeating a search on something I have searched for before and know that it is on a non-1st page then I do not want to have to scroll to the bottom to jump.
- puredeviation, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Google is really cleaning up their interfaces, really nice I must say. I'm using those google themes for the personalized homepage too!
- zunipus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Premature ejaculation is evident here. No Digg.
- rome747, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Still looks like the same easy-to-use search interface that I have always loved.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now the stuff I added on customizegoogle wont work
- cyberfly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Works for me. Looks lightly different, but nothing amazing.
- donsherio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3OKAY~! CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO DO THIS TRICK:
1) Go to Google.com
2) in the address bar, add:
javascript:document.cookie="PREF=ID=fddb01133a87d314:LD=en:CR=2:TM=1177334998:LM=1177334998:GM=1:S=OOg0FEVzpPplxe9J;path=/; domain=.google.com"
...AFTER the "www.google.com"
3) Hit Go, enter, Return, w.e :P
4) nothing will appear to change and u stay at the Google default page.
5) Enter a search query and hit search.
DONE: the search results will be altered. Hope that helped.- Eisim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1your CLEAR instructions sucks, and fails to explain that this does not work if the google you're using is redirected to your local google in your own language.
instructions for all those failing to test this (if your google isn't google.com but google.whatevercountryyourelivingin)
1. Go to http://www.google.com/intl/en/
2. Follow rest of the instructions given by mr smartypants
and if you want to continue seeing this test-version, you have to continue go to ../intl/en version, and not google.se/ro/dk/whatever..

- Kruncher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looks a bit Web 2.0 to me...
- pengd0t, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Maybe less is better...
I made an adless version of the black google page to use as my home page, it's plain and exactly what I want.
If anything I should simplify it more.
http://prism.troy.edu/~peng/blackgoogle- Trogdor420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You do realize that this saves no power if you are using an LCD screen.

http://digg.com/tech_news/Google_tests_new_search_layout_again_Try_it_yourself- detrate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1digged?
- mwoody, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I believe they have only released this for x amount of users, meaning some can see it and some cant. Can anyone confirm?
- the6thReplicant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've lost all of my tabs on my homepage! I tried adding them and then they disappeared too. Bad luck for me I guess.
- SoloMalee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You are not alone, mine have gone too! I'm so relieved it is not only me.
I've got the same problem at work with IE6 as at home with Firefox, so it doesn't even seem to be a PC config issue.
I also don't beleive it has anything to do with "trying out" the new search page. Mine had already gone about an hour ago. I then went searching for "Google has problems" stories and saw this news item. I've decided that they've screwed something up during a change.
My Personalised Home page seems to have reverted to the basic config I was using about 3 months ago. As you mentioned, all the Tabs are gone along with all the items I had added to my main tab.
Come on Google, we rely on you to not screw up like MS does! - SoloMalee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's your explanation...
http://www.digg.com/software/Google_Home_page_gets_less_personal
For once it seems Digg is your friend and Google is....not.
- SoloMalee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You are not alone, mine have gone too! I'm so relieved it is not only me.
- RyanWilliams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Didn't go Google do exactly the same thing a year or so ago, also accessible with a JavaScript trick? That never did get rolled out though, so this one won't necessarily be either.
- JohnTheJohnMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1read comment 5...
"I would also like to point out that the design is not visible for everyone. And they are still testing other designs too." - edwardbc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Buried as Inacurrate. Google has been doing lots of tests, and they aren't even global tests. This is one of those, not a new facelift.
