- arbulus, on 10/13/2007, -5/+7I don't get it. Every picture is different, and if the headline refers the the top left pic, it's Harry Potter.
- KzooJason, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The headline refers to all of the pictures. View it on Flikr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeremiah_owyang/15094 ... view the original size which is very large indeed, and they look like Einstein (all of them, not just the one in the upper left). View it in a smaller format and they look like different people. Of course your neurophysiology may be different so YMMV.
- ImOscar, on 10/13/2007, -4/+1Yeah, it doesn't work for me either. I've got pretty good eyesight, so it's either that, or this is a bad "illusion."
- 0ceanic, on 10/13/2007, -2/+5for those who arent getting it:
every photo here looks like einstein:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeremiah_owyang/15094 ...
every photo here looks like a different person:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2181/1509444609_d2e ...
this is just applying how the brain interperates things without detail. having really good eyesight, or corrected eyesight will ***** this up. - 0ceanic, on 10/13/2007, -3/+2yeah i ***** that up somehow.
this is the first link:
http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=1509444609 ...
checking the link broke my ability to edit.- Wartz, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1still doesnt seem to be working. I see potter top left and einstein bottom right.
- isuisorisuaint, on 10/13/2007, -23/+11i wish it was keeley hazell and not harry potter

- MrBabyMan, on 11/01/2007, -2/+85The technique behind this is called "Hybrid Images", and it was developed at MIT:

http://cvcl.mit.edu/hybridimage.htm- omegajtf, on 10/13/2007, -1/+2In this example, the subjects initially appear to be women. However, from a distance, we see they are transvestites.
- ObsidianUnicorn, on 10/13/2007, -3/+8Interesting use of technology, but a fairly ineffective illusion. Perhaps it's better to view the pictures close up first.
- sncshesh, on 10/13/2007, -2/+6Can anyone provide a working link?

- CrankyPants, on 10/13/2007, -1/+8That does an Einstein to Marilyn Monroe
- kaskoosek, on 10/13/2007, -3/+6If wearing eyeglasses for some reason the image does not change.
- Touchy610, on 10/13/2007, -6/+1Holy *****! You're right, but if you take them off, it looks nothing like Einstein and everything like Harry Potter. THAT WAS ***** COOL.
- shredswithpiks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2indeed. this is weird.
- allan17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have the same problem kaskoosek.
- saifatlast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Taking off your glasses is having the same effect as standing far away.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you use glasses, this one should explain why you see that effect: (watch with glasses on)
http://www.michaelbach.de/ot/fcs_SpatFreqComposite ...
The faces are overlaid on each other so the other shows up when the first loses details (that is, without glasses, or when seeing it from a distance).
- thomasmck, on 10/13/2007, -16/+9Absolutely stupid and pointless. Buried.
- Albaster, on 10/13/2007, -0/+3So are you. Buried.
- N00F, on 10/13/2007, -1/+9If you cause your eyes to go really out of focus, I find a pretty lady is visible.

- MrSketch, on 10/13/2007, -1/+3What are you talking about? It looks just like Harry Potter, just with a mustache and wild hair and without glasses.
- dorianh49, on 10/13/2007, -0/+3You guys... there's more than one image. The one that was mirrored above (by abm24) is Einstein to Marilyn Monroe. I think there's about 5 more, including one that goes from Einstein to Harry Potter, depending upon how far away you're looking.
- exomni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Step back, zoom out, or shrink the image.
- vectorb, on 10/13/2007, -1/+4so....if you look at the image from far away...and squint...in a dark room... you totally see something different! NIFTY!
Science! - Yaanu, on 10/13/2007, -5/+5Past all the blogspam:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeremiah_owyang/15094 ...- habenneas, on 10/13/2007, -4/+1I think we should support the bloggers who link to this stuff.
- resplence, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2Yeah, FTA: "I shared this with many of my friends including my buddy Neil (link to a SEO site)."
Most ***** up, shamelessly unnecessary plug I've ever seen.
- Oh by the way, know this story I just told you? I also mentioned it to a few other people.
- Uhm... yeah?
- Including my very good lawyer friend Steve.
- Uh... alright.
- You need a lawyer, don't you?
- I don't know... not really, no.
- Well, just felt like mentioning.
- Okay... nice story. See ya.
- Say hello to Steve for me!
- gak001, on 10/13/2007, -5/+4I only see Einstein, I can't really see how it looks anything like Potter, though I'm sifting through mirrors.
- exomni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Step back, zoom out, or shrink the image.
- redwards, on 10/13/2007, -5/+22...I don't get it. All I see is Einstein. Anyone gettin' Potter?
- exomni, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2Step back, zoom out, or shrink the image.
- Jugalator, on 10/13/2007, -1/+1It's a really ugly/weird Potter in that case.
- energyblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You think Potter is good looking?

Otherwise I see Einstein.- rzrgenesys187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I see her if i take my glasses off and look at it
- fryguy1013, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2I see her if I take my pants off and look at it
- Tarvok, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1Aren't there eight pictures on a wall? You've got Harry Potter, Marilyn Monroe, and six other people I don't recognize. When I zoom in, I see (I have to scroll around the picture) Albert Einstein, Albert Einstein, Albert Einstein, etc.
- rzrgenesys187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I see her if i take my glasses off and look at it
- VeniVidiVici064, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Its actually Einstein and Marilyn Monroe or however its spelled...to see Einstein look up close, for Marilyn look from about 5 feet away.
- redwards, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, I can kinda get Monroe from 5 or 6 feet away, but even then... only because I recognize the vague outline of a famous photo of her.
- Minkii, on 10/13/2007, -3/+7Potter?? To me it looks like a young woman from far away..
- hydrodev, on 10/13/2007, -11/+6Its marilyn monroe not harry potter, ASS!
Where the hell did you get Harry Potter from?- GreenxGiraffe, on 10/13/2007, -5/+2She's there, *****. First row, second column.

- vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I see another crappy $14/month hosting service go down after the slightest breeze.
Too bad hosting services seem to be run by used car salesmen that got fired for not being slimy enough. - jcastillo81, on 10/13/2007, -0/+5I see it! It's a sailboat!
- crooks5001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Lol Idiot, Its a Schooner!
- centran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"A schooner is a sailboat stupid head"
- melandersen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Brenda?
- crooks5001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Lol Idiot, Its a Schooner!
- timtastic, on 10/13/2007, -0/+6From far away it looks like Harry Potter. From close up it looks like an outline of Einstein over a blurry picture of Harry Potter.
- kushed, on 10/13/2007, -1/+10I see Marilyn Monroe. I hope I am not the only one, otherwise I am getting help.
- nic28, on 10/13/2007, -0/+4HA! Even mustachy Marilyn turns into Einstein!
- Dhalgren, on 10/13/2007, -0/+20This is the science of a butterface. She looks good from far away and then when you get close, it's Albert Einstein...
- tybris, on 10/13/2007, -2/+1This is hardly an optical illusion. My display simply isn't displaying the details.
- Bob042, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2They all look like the celebrity with a big Einstein nose from a certain distance. Creepy.
- crackedplastic, on 10/13/2007, -0/+10Okay, here are the images directly (hope this works):
You should view both to see the illusion.

- FreakyD, on 10/13/2007, -0/+6I see Harry Einstein
- poptones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Good thing my vision is so horrible that I only have to lean back in the chair to see Harry Potter.
- Jeffler, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2Fools....
Harry is the left and Monroe on the right...thats why there is confusion. - exomni, on 10/13/2007, -0/+8Harry Potter, Marilyn Monroe, Sigmund Freud, Salvador Dali, Sean Connery, John Lennon, Madonna and Einstein.
So I'm guessing they blur the real portrait, and then pencil over it with Einstein. This way when you step back, the blurring is less noticable, and looks sharper, while the thin pencil lines of Einstein are less noticable. Conversly: being closer you can easily see the thin Einstein lines, while the actual portrait is too blurred to see.- elhaf, on 10/13/2007, -2/+6Close. They run a high-pass filter and a low-pass filter on two different images, then combine the results.
- elhaf, on 10/13/2007, -2/+5Close. They run a high-pass filter and a low-pass filter on two different images, then combine the results.

- Jugalator, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2I agree. This is not just Potter, nor just Monroe, it's several persons. Good work on finding them all :)
Madonna was most impressive / worked best to me at least.
- plainOldFool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Funny, I see a server time out message.
- noahw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mirror: http://echopic.com/7tn
