- joeshlub, on 10/12/2007, -16/+6This product is cool, but digglerst's comment is so much better.
- Neoanarchist, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4@jstohler (#5876913)
Yea the kind where guys put their "tea bag" on someone's face/forehead. Generally practiced in multiplayer FPSs. This is usually acomplished by crouching repeatedly over a dead body's head.
ONTOPIC: That is pretty ***** crazy, i guess you could also throw in your own tea "ingredients" or w/e because the top is open and what not. Sweet product design over all. - zjbird, on 10/12/2007, -15/+76HAHAHAHA im simply digging this because of the title!
- Jo9100, on 10/12/2007, -18/+4meh... lipton invented the pyramidal tea bag! >:D

That's not a pyramid, strictly speaking, it's a tetrahedron. - JohnChapin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42Ha! That reminds me of a conversation with my friend Ian when we were at a bar... It was around Halloween and we were talking about trick-or-treaters. He said, "Yeah, I remember one Halloween we ran out of candy and had to start giving tea bags to the kids."
You... y... What?! - WaltDismal, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Oh, "creative tea bags". I misread it and thought you said "creative hot Carl's"
- ilikefun, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4for anyone that has been tea bagged before, this title is a little frightening.
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I saw this title on my RSS Feed and just laughed. I actually couldn't determine whether it was about tea bags, or you know, tea bags. You never know around these parts of the internets

- the7dwarfs, on 10/12/2007, -9/+29Seems like they are over complicating things if you ask me.
- zm634, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Yeah, the damn hippies.
- eggstylin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Using paper will always be inferior to just steeping the tea leaves in water. You're basically filtering out flavor that could have been in your tea. Honestly, how hard is it to just filter them out after the 2 to 5 minutes they have to be in the water. How much is a strainer? 99 cents?
- crisrose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What a waste of resources. Can't people just buy teapots??
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey, at least it's organic.
- internetslacker, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1This teabag is pure evil, not unlike Lipton's.
- pinab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23the lipton one is also nylon, so it won't biodegrade
- michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -12/+10Was there something insufficient about the previous 12 trillion tea bags used throughout history?
- cdmarcus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+48Yes. Regular teabags don't produce very good tea because the "leaves" are usually pretty much dust from the tea manufacturing process. Also, they can't expand to their full size because of the constraints of the tea bag. The advantage of this is that it's full-leaf tea, as convenient as a tea bag, and as good as loose.
- demonotaku, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4And just like half the people on that site said, it's basically the same as the Lipton Pyramid thing. But more expensive.
- michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I just started using one of those metal contraption that you put tea in and drop in the kettle.
seems to work pretty well. - Rsulliv1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9If you use the balls (pun?), make sure they're the larger ones. Full tea leaves will expand 30%-40% while steeping. So the smaller infuser balls have the same troubles as tea bags.
Google "agony of tea" and you'll see how the unfurling of the leaves is what drinking tea is all about. - atomsforpeace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it does make a difference... but unfortunately, the article this links to sucks and doesn't explain it that well. it's more of an advertisement for ineeka. that, and it's not even really news. I remember reading a really great and informative article about this in the NY Times in september... here's a link, which you unfortunately won't get to read unless you're a premium subscriber.

- teadrinker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+60Or for about $60 you can get a reusable 1L glass teapot with a strainer. And for about the same $10 you can get half a pound of good (maybe not gourmet) quality loose leaf tea to be used to make tea. Thus resulting in about the same quality tea for about 1/8 the price.
I can go through 14 teabags in a day / day and a half. Just living it up to my name.- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+65loose leaf FTW!
No one who is serious in any way about tea would use tea bags! - admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I recently stopped (completely) drinking sugary drinks and converted to tea, which I enjoy very much and go through over 1-2L a day by myself..
Id like to learn more about better tea brewing and the like, any suggestions? - jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Indeed
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6sishgupta: Its all about convience. I love tea, but there's a time an a place for putting in the effort to make a pot of tea, over the convience of using a tea bag. You know, sometimes you want gourmet food, and sometimes you want a burger. As long as you get your tea bags from somewhere other than America or Continental Europe, you'll get a decent cuppa out of a teabag too.
- bdpf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yep bulk Tea leafs is the way to go.

- *Ica*, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you're in the US, Adagio may be a good bet because tea isn't quite so popular/available.
For people like me in the UK, I'd suggest loose Yorkshire Tea. Works out cheaper than the bag version, but you get more taste. Its available everywhere, give it a try. - noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The easiest way to make loose tea is with a french press.
- EarlPolliwog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Adagio is too pricey. Go with Upton Tea or SpecialTeas.
- BillyLK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Your name is Teadrinker? Jesus, how long have you been waiting for this thread to come along?

- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3This is stupid. It's quicker, more practical and cheaper just to use a regular tea bag!
- Hayaemsay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's more cost efficient to use a pot. What's more, it tastes better.
- Jeifurie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Its supposed to be hip with fancy packaging like Apple products - iNeeka.
- DevilDunkard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You can buy a French Press for about 10 bucks ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_press ) that will do the same thing with regular tea bags or loose tea leaves. Still it is cool from a package design standpoint.
- ewerdna, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Wow. Hardly frontpage material. I just had to burry this one as lame.

- shortarabguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was very disappointed, I thought Digg was heading in a new direction. An NSFW direction...
Honestly, if you're so adamant about having your tea that way, just do it the old fashioned way: With an infuser, some real leaves, and very hot water. It's not so much work, and I find it relaxing to take the 10 minutes out of my day to make a cup of tea.
It may be quicker and cheaper to use a tea bag, but tea's not a "quick fix" kind of drink... You don't need it like people need caffeine or nicotine, so why do you have to have it "right now"?- spiritualized1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2glad to hear my daily cup of english breakfast is devoid of caffeine. whew!
- Soapdish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Steeping times as recommended by my local teashop are in general:
Black: 2-3 minutes
Roibos: 7-10 minutes
Green or white: 1-2 minutes
Green and White teas should not use boiling hot water, as that will scorch the tea. The water should be at about 180F for them (just steaming).
I use a tea strainer that fits in my cup, so I don't have to make a full pot for myself. When I use the Jasmine Pheonix Pearls, I don't even need the strainer.
It takes about 5 minutes for me to make a cup of green tea. - jdpalite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To add...
Flavored teas (jasmine, etc) - 2-3 mins. Be careful because they can get bitter quickly
Oolong tea - I've seen two schools of this. When I was in Taiwan they would always brew it for a very short time (30 seconds the first time), but they use really high quality tea and it turns out to be this very fragrant, very light brew. On the other hand, I think people in the west prefer to steep the tea about 2-3 mins to get a stronger brew and a more noticeable flavor.

Boil it, soak it, stew it.
A strong dark brew is as good as your black hart coffee. - ritz4real, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1it looks like a diaper
- airencracken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The pyramidal tea bag has been around for a while. Lipton DID NOT invent it, I know for a fact that Revolution Tea had it way before Lipton did. Besides loose leaf tea is the only way to go. I get most of my loose leaf tea from http://www.taooftea.com. Adagio is good stuff too, but I find I like The Tao of Tea's stuff better, it usually seems to be higher quality. However Adagio has more Tisanes.
- Archaeolojae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow that is expensive. For that kind of money I can buy 1/4 lb. of high quality loose leaf tea and brew about 35 cups of tea.
- Archaeolojae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Plus you can make multiple infusions will loose leaf green and oolong teas. So that's at least 70 cups with 1/4 lb. of loose tea!
- bobba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Buy a teapot.
The end. - maanwi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I'm really wondering if the whole "tea dust is bad, leaves need room to breathe" thing is a myth. Do you really need the leaves to unfurl if the bag consists mainly of smaller particles? More surface area is exposed on tea fannings, so it would seem that the tea release would be even stronger than from a few leaves. As long as I've stuck to decent brands, I've not had any problem with tea brewed from your standard tea bag.
- Archaeolojae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's mostly the stuff they sweep off the floor at the end of the day and stick in tea bags and sell to Americans as they laugh that we actually drink it. Seriously though, it's typically the lower quality leaves that they just chop up and stash into tea bags where no one will ever see them or know what they looked like. The dust and fannings do have some advantages such as a quicker steeping time and produce a stronger brew since there is more surface area exposed. You have much more options with loose leaf tea: different qualities, leaf sizes, regions and even specific estates. If you want to drink tea dust, I suggest matcha which is used in the Japanese tea ceremony.
- obezyana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can notice a major difference between the dust used in tea bags and loose-leaf tea. I mostly brew my tea from bags (i *still* have about three boxes of black tea left over from what i was given as Christmas presents, so hey, free tea… i'm not so elitest as to turn my nose up at it because it's not as good) but every now and then my friends and i spend an evening at a Japanese tea house where they brew with loose-leaf tea. It's $5-$8 a cup but sooooo much better tasting.
The dust does brew faster but the way i figure it, unless you've got a gallon jug of pre-brewed tea sitting around you're still taking time out of your day to make it so why spend that tiny little bit of extra time making it better?
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Does anyone know if they sell just the empty bags?
Yes, I'm too lazy to wash a tea ball.- Archaeolojae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yes they do sell empty tea bags, but they're just as lousy as a tea ball. They both constrict the leaves. You're better off getting a tea pot. You really aren't supposed to wash a tea pot. You just need to rinse it out and let it air dry. Washing it leaves a soapy residue and makes your tea taste like soap. So there's really not much maintenance.
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks! I'm going to Chinatown in NYC this weekend, I'll pick one up.
- GobBluth, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0I'm a dirty dirty boy. When I see the the words tea bag ............

LAME!!!! - klick37, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Not the kind of tea bagging reinvention I had hoped for. If someone reinvents the Halo teabag, I'm sure it will be national news.
- jrieth50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Speaking of "adver-blogging" - 'so i was at this awesome store named _______ that appeals to the online/hip/cool demographic. Being as hip and cool as I am, I'm currently in on the new rising trend in America, tea drinking. I think product ________ is a good choice, but listen my friend... After being just absolutely floored by the sheer beauty of the package that product ___________ came in I couldn't help myself but pay any price necessary to sample the product. Money well spent! (Insert detailed but simple product description here) + (reason why this product is superior to afforementioned lesser product) and finally recap with (price) (quantity) (location to run out and buy product.)
(Note: I too love tea, but for crying out loud, just buy tea leaves and get a damn diffuser and be done with it. Then you can write a great blog on TEA, and not manufactured tea PRODUCTS.) - tinker123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Why use tea bags at all?
My Chinese friend at work tells me that most Chinese just put the leaves loose into the cup, and just stop drinking when they get very close to the bottom. Loose leaf tastes better and you have less paper going into landfills.- thehans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think some teas get too bitter if you leave the leafs in there too long.
- undersky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2tea tastes bitter only to western who are used to drink tea w/ sugar and milk, just like chinese cannot imagine drinking black coffee. if u think the tea becomes too concentrated, just add more hot water.
- tinker123, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Or use fewer leaves
I'm an American and I don't get how people can milk, sugar to tea.
I understand with coffee, it is course ( why drink something you need to doctor up that much? ) - cdcarter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lies, never brew a white for more than 2 minutes. Otherwise it will be very disgusting. I know a lot of people who don't like white tea, and it is because the brew it too long, or too hot.
- cloudwalkertea, on 07/18/2008, -0/+0There is no measurement for the "brewing time" for different teas. Sure there are suggested brewing temperatures but these fluctuate depending on the humidity, and temperature of the day (and altitude). It takes a great deal of practice and adjusting of techniques to discover what brewing temperature or method works best for one tea or another. White tea is one of the most difficult to brew correctly as the water cannot be boiling when you first steep the leaves as they will bruise (the same is true of green tea but green tea has more forgiveness due to the increased processing it goes through before it reaches you).
If your tea is bitter it is most commonly and probably caused by the following: over steeping, the water is too hot when the leaves are infused, the tea itself isn't very good (common in N.A.). All are easily remedied. Reduce the steeping time to one more desired, reduce the water temperature and buy better loose leaf/cake teas!
If tea is steeped properly it can actually be quite rich and sweet (without sugar). And a really excellent tea will leave a lasting, thick finish on the palate. If you truly wish to enjoy your tea, try doing so in the gong fu cha tradition of Fujian Province in China and in Taiwan. Sometimes a second taller sniffing cup is employed to allow the drinker to better smell the aromas. And slurping is ok! It aerates the tea allowing it to release more flavours on your tongue!
- BigglesPiP, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0That's tea? Looks like my toenail clippings.
- andycr512, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Biggles, meet real tea. Real tea, meet biggles.

- auger282, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have a loose tea store by me.. but we have bags that fit on a stick that lays across the cup... looks like this
http://bw.watchtan.com/images/3.jpg
very cheap... we also have ..umm.. long bags I guess you would call them... and you just flop the one end over the edge of the cup so it doesnt all fall in.. or you can knot the top and cut off the rest... and then just use it like a reg. tea bag.. *shrug* - masterkang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8shown to other chinese friends...
come on, have americans heard of REUSABLE, not wasting, tea pots?
Then, you can just put the leaves INTO the teapot, thus functioning the same way as a strangely complex origami structure coffeefiltre/tea leaf holder...
tea bags are for lipton, earl gray whatever ness
get some daisies, stuff em into the pot.
fin - ThisIsBob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3By the way, the reason coffee pots have spouts coming of the bottom and tea pots have spouts coming off the top us because coffee floats and tea sinks.
- Petronski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just buy a second Bodoni "French press" for your tea. Loose tea works fine, and the steel is stainless.
