"Seat Chiller" invented for car seats
thedesertsun.com — Natalie Prust, of Palm Desert, CA, created the Seat Chiller, a long, ice pack-like device made to fit onto children's car seats. The Chiller cools the seated child down and prevents soft, tender baby skin from burning. It also claims that it will prevent whining.

:P - Celeron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Screw kids, they need this for adults. I hate sitting down on my burning seats after the car has stayed out in the sun for hours.
- tecmec, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4They have them...Lexus has them at least.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yes many luxury cars have had seat cooling or heating for a while. But this is something a little different, and it's accessible to anyone. So it's not really the same thing.
Like those little dvd players + screen that strap on the back of the front seats, sure people have had TVs and DVD players in their car before them, but only if they were stinking rich. - Qtip42, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2They need leather that doesn't absorb heat.......that'd be nice OR maybe make a car that doesn't absorb heat at all.
- woodsja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a weird yet practical idea. A better solution might incorporate pelts to cool the seat in the summer the same way they are heated in the winter.
- ellisgl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Would be a great idea - but pelts make both a cold and hot side....
- Tyr7BE, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I can see it now. "Buy now! And get a free (FREE!!!) tube of Preparation H!!"
- Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Or you can just put your kids in the freezer before you take them in the car. That's what I do and it works for me.
- Pacotheparrot, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1This is old stuff. I remember ridding in a car that had these a year ago.
- Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Alternatively - throw a rug over the seat while you are away from the car.
- JK1150, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Hasn't Saab had air conditioned seats for a long time now?
- mrFREEZE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1RTFA. This has been available for quite a while now.... but these are now accessible to *anyone*, not just one or two specific car models.
- jnolan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Lincoln has had this as an option for a couple of years. It's a liquid cooling system built into the seats, as opposed to a heater which is an electrical system (and much less expensive to make).
- Qtip42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Someone needs to retrofit them onto a 1995 lincoln town car. Those were badass rides. The new ones look like space ships.
- hwood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lincoln does not use a liquid cooling system for their seats they, like Cadillac use a peltier junction with heat sinks and fans to heat/cool their high end seats.
- Portwineboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How long before parents are prosecuted for frozen baby syndrome?
Can't shake 'em, can't bake 'em, WTF are we supposed to do with 'em? - Sassanix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Mercedez Benz does this allready in their seats, so this isn't something new
NO DIGG - Dan005, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Ford does this aswell... Sooo.. no digg.
- mcpowley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I actually grew up in Palm Desert, and am down here at my house working until uni starts back up. It's sweltering here...yesterday record temps, 120 degrees, today 121. The summers are killer here, we need anything to cool us down.
- To0n1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hear you, I grew up near Palm Deset as well. That's why I stayed near my Uni during the summers, and continue to live near it post graduation
- QuorumCall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Mercedez Benz does this allready in their seats, so this isn't something new"
Well I guess she should just go buy an MB then, huh? Yeah, right. I'm in Palm Springs and like mcpowley said, it was 121 today. This is something that people can use who can't afford cars with all the bells and whistles, especially when it comes to babies in high temperatures. - akinder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, they need these for adults. I have leather interior in my Impala, it came with heated seats which is great for the winter, but sitting down on a flaming hot seat in the summer sucks :/
- raccettura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yea, that will work until their balls freeze to the seat and you need to use hot water and a spatula to get them off.
/sat on a freezer once... outch. - dannykeithjames, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This quote from the article:
"She didn't have kids but wanted them for her car," Prust said. "You can put them on the back of your seat. When the kids are done I put them under my legs."
Make of that what you will... - UnderWurlde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1At my local Wal-Mart (Canada) they sell a seat cover that plugs into the cigarette lighter and supposedly cools down the occupant - I think it works with many small fans. Anyone ever bought one of those? What are they like?
- ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is it really so hot in Canada that you need some sort of device to keep you alive? I'd hate to see you in Houston in August.
- UnderWurlde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Check out the weather in Montreal... 102'F last week..... air con was welcome :) People can't believe it can be SOOO hot and SOOO cold in Montreal depending on the season, but it's a fact.
- colinmhayes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sounds a bit like a techy, overpriced sheepskin seat cover.
- gfixler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't for the life of me find it online, and it has no information on it, but my mom sent me a pad, which I'm currently sitting on, available formerly via QVC that when sat upon, gets cold. It has what feel like hard crystals all through it, though you can't feel that when you sit on it, and the pressure applied to the crystals slowly turns them into liquid, in an endothermic reaction that very rapidly chills the pad. Everything I find online are hot and cold packs meant to be refrigerated or microwaved, but I'm pretty sure this isn't them.
It's a flat, maybe 0.5" thick, blue, vinyl pad with 5 chambers the width of the pad, each filled with the crystals, and maybe a kind of gel, and when you sit on it for the first time, it shocks you to feel it suddenly go very cold underneath you. The effect lasts for a few hours, and removing pressure causes the crystals to reform over a few hours, or you can throw it in the fridge, or freezer to quickly bring its temp back down. It's helping me out a lot right now in the current LA heat wave, as are sticking my two ice packs on my feet. I hate summer. - ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mmm, soft tender baby skin...
/eats babies - alexkim804, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why the hell did this take so long to invent? they've had heated seats forever
