The headlights are a little funky and it weighs almost as much as Rosie O'D, but it's actually pretty nice, looks-wise. To be fair though, it was one of the first cross-over vehicles, so its not like there was a set standard for style. Nice to see Pontiac took a risk and made a (relatively) good vehicle in the process.

Unsafe, unreliable, not enough interior space, inefficient, etc. Oh, and it says "The WORLD'S Ugliest Cars" but they are all US-market cars. There's some damned ugly cars in other countries.

      Also, when I saw the thumbnail of the Yugo I thought it was an Isuzu Rodeo.

      I see numerous FJs on highways and driving through suburbs, toting mommy, daddy and kid(s) to and from the grocery store. If they wanted to do that, why didn't they just get a (much more practical) RAV4? It's the same class [Low-tier: FJ/RAV4; Mid-tier: 4Runner/Highlander; High-Tier: Land Cruiser/Sequioa] and it doesn't need PREMIUM GASOLINE to fuel it up.

      I swear the people who drive those things are as retarded as those who drive Escalades and Excursions/Expeditions. They're not excluded from the retard boat just because they aren't driving a hulking behemoth of a vehicle. I wouldn't mind an FJ myself, but I'd never use the thing for its intended purpose and the gas cost would burn an already smoking hole in my wallet.
      • fnaqzna, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You sound bitter. Personally, I was disappointed with the FJ Cruiser. I had hoped that Toyota would design an offroad vehicle to challenge Jeep, something with a solid front axle. Instead, they went after the Nissan Xterra.

        FWIW, I own an Xterra and it's offroad all the time.

It shows the extent of American creativity, sometimes we get it right (Corvette, Impala, Camero, Viper, etc...), and sometimes we get it horribly wrong. But we always try something new and different.

        The fact that the list consists almost exclusively of American cars doesn't show the extent of American creativity, it shows the extent of American self-centeredness. The guy or gal who made the list has obviously hardly looked over the US's borders (otherwise he'd surely have included the Fiat Multipla, or the Dolphin from India). What makes you think that a list like this would be anything near accurate? And you, incredibly, use it as an argument for the case of... 'American creativity'!

        85-87 Buick Grand National, 78-82 Chevy Malibu Coupe, 79-93 Mustang, 67-69 Camaro, 55-57 Chevy, any Duesenberg, 1950 Mercury, 32 Ford, 68 Lincoln Continental, 68 Cadillac, 2008 Dodge Challenger, and any Corvette!

      There are a lot more uglier cars than the ones feature though.

      The Chevy HHR comes to mind as well as the original tiburon.
      I think the mazda rx8 (original) is pretty ugly as well.

    • corvairkid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I like the original Vega's because they sort of look like a downsized early '70's Camaro. I'm not a fan of the early Corvair's (1960-64) because IMHO the front end is too boxy but the '65-'69's are eye candy.

      Unlike the comments, the NHTSA proved in a 1971 test that Corvair's are actually safer to drive than the VW Beetle and Microbus. Even Nader knew it but he went after GM because at the time, they were a bigger company with more money and US marketshare than VW. Incidentally, even Porsche used the swing axle rear end in their cars.

Easy to work on too! I think 8 bolts held on the subframe and I could have rebuilt the engine without even pulling it out.

Taxis here are generally Mercedes, but one starts seeing more and more other cars like the Toyota Avensis, this Multipla for cheaper rides, and others. it's a good development. Mercedes is not a good taxi.

Here is a modern list (without any regard to quality):

    1) Honda Element
    2) Scion TC Box-van thing
    3) Pontiac Aztek (they got one right)

      Why all of them? Why didn't you just say the PT Cruiser? While I don't necessarily think they're ugly, they're different enough to justify being on somebody's list somewhere... there's some good looking Chrysler/Dodge sedans out there.

      I think the Toyota Echo is one of the ugliest cars, particularly on the inside. I'm also surprised nobody's said anything (yet) about the '99 - '05 Grand Am SE's, with the plastic body ribs - I personally love Grand Ams, but I remember when that style first came out there was lots of jokes about them ("the car didn't fall out of the ugly tree, it drove into it and went straight up", etc.)

          Every single Mustang has been designed and produced by the Mustang Motor Company since its foundation in 1968 by James Mustang, a car enthusiast who created the first prototype in his garage, sculpted in a solid block of oak wood. To make a long story short, by the end of 1969, the MMC was producing a a thousand Mustang a week, and growing exponentially.

          In 1972, Ford then known for their extremely ugly cars, were looking for a way to improve their image. They approached James Mustang, hoping to buy his company. James refused, but Ford was insistent, and the deal that came out of it is that Ford would pay the MMC 1 million dollars a month for him to add the word "Ford" in front of the Mustang brand name. James insisted in the contract that the MMC and Ford engineers and designers would never communicate by any means, since he was afraid that the bad designers at Ford would contaminate his company.

          And it's still true today, the only link between Ford and Mustang is the name, the two companies are completely separate.

  • philba, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I dunno, the gremlin is way up there. In fact, anything made by AMC qualifies for the finals (oh, so that's a Matador!). The Citroen C2V is pretty ugly. But I think the trophy belongs to the honda element. coyote ugly.
    • jacquesm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0there are three 'cult' cars in europe, in order of appearance on the market: vw bug ('46), citroen 2cv('48) and the 'mini' ('59). Each of these were made well into the millions and are still popular today. The 2cv is affectionally called the 'ugly duckling' because it really is quite a neat design. But it takes some getting used to.

Look into the javelin or amx, the amx/3 which was one step away from production having 8 working models built, the rebel, the rambler american isn't bad. That's also a matador wagon, almost any wagon from the 70's is crappy looking. the matador coupe isn't so bad either.

    And last, but not least :-) I think they picked Yugo just because it was voted to be the worst car in 20th century on a couple of occasions. For the record, I still drive Yugo (I bought it two months ago for 250€).

I think all of the amc cars on there look better than some of the current cars. there is a massive difference between reliability and ugliness. true. amcs and the chevy vega and the edsel sucked ASS but it wasnt because they are ugly. (even though i truly dont like the edsel) Its because they are ***** cars. The fiat multipla looks way worse.

  • lordmike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5My dad had a gremlin... he liked the hatchback.. it was the first car to have one... it had no power anything, straight six, and black vynil seats that gave you second degree burns in the summer and frostbite in the winter... we installed a stereo and hung the speakers form the dash with electrical tape... drove that thing until near death... his coworkers made fun of him... eventually he sold for $500 it to a guy who wanted a winter car for his girlfriend... I wish I still had that car.. it was apple green, and would be way cool today!

The only thing I ever found out that was any good about them was that if you knew a Lebanese guy who owned one, (Lebanese guys have heard this joke so many times so don't even go there - it's about them being Lesbians) you can actually change the chrome on the back of the car to read "Chrysler Lesbian".
