What is street art?
we-make-money-not-art.com — Street art has 3 critical ingredients: It has to be illegal, it has to get that WTF moment, and it has to a contain a statement on how you see the world..

When I make a dystopia (I mean uhh... Utopia) all the streets are going to be made in a design of some crazy ***** art. And no ones gunna know unless they fly above it. But flying is prohibited because it is the work of the devil and NO ONE MAY LEAVE THE COMMUNITY and experience the OUTSIDE WORLD.- dizzybastard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://stud.cmd.hro.nl/0764136/jaar1/project3/graffiti.html

- asurroca, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Some nice examples there. Street Art has come a long, long way since I was a little kid watching my brothers graffiti out in LA... seriously, to think that it's fast becoming legitimate art, it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside
- Umberger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7This guy probably could have picked a better surname...and domain name for that matter.
http://www.cuminthestreets.com/ - Ikean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like street art, but found this article (on the front page with no comments and 30 digs), a bit underwhelming.

http://woostercollective.com/ - daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Something tells me that these street artists would not be happy with other people painting thier homes/property without their permission.
- sooperdooper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Something tells me you'd be surprised, then. As far as I'm concerned (and I am not a graffitist), the more street art the better, no matter on whose walls it's painted.
- stylerm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I see spray painting tags as vandalism. In fact, I see most painting on private property as vandalism. I did like the box man, but that is cheap to clean up (unless he damaged the brick wall by drilling in anchors).
- GoldenIsotope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@stylerm
What these street artists are doing isn't tagging. These are actual pieces that they consider their expression. I don't like the look of tagging myself, and i don't consider it street art, because its too barbaric (like a dog urinating on its territory). Taggers, I consider, just tag up their alias on whatever and not care about the look. In Europe, while some street artists keep it as non-intrusive as possible by only painting on the roll-down gates in from of shops that are only down during when the shops are closed, not ruining the store front during business hours.
- trollzor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"It has to be illegal. A work of street art reclaims the public space and the best street art has a context, builds a relationship with its environment, dialogs with the city."
Why does it *have* to be illegal to build those relationships? What exactly is the difference to the public/observers who don't know if permission was granted or not anyway? Or is this part of a romantic vision of the artist spending $40 on spray paint (rather than a charity) as being a "rebel against the system"? Don't get me wrong, I love street art, but saying it *has* to be illegal as a requirement sounds illogical to me.- dennytang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm wondering that too. I seriously hope it's not to make it more challenging and/or to make people go against society.
- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I absolutely adore the tank cosy.
- humanaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1very strange that this makes it to the frontpage.. but it did lead me to a lot of other interesting articles about Street Art
(Woo.. my home city is the stencil capital of the world!) - ekosystem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The oldest street-art scene website: http://www.ekosystem.org with worldwide flix.
- pandronic, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3I think it's distasteful. There should be more severe punishments against it, because I don't think it's right to ruin public and private property with retarded drawings that have little to no artistic value. It's just vandalism at its best.
Get involved! Beat up a graffiti artist today!- VaporBro, on 10/26/2007, -3/+6...you're an idiot. Come after me dumb ass. I can run much faster then you. =]
- legion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2So you advocate committing a violent crime to stop a lesser crime? Where does that end? So you beat up some kid for painting on a wall, in response someone sees you assaulting the kid and kills you, by your argument of escalating response, they would be justified in doing so.

Simply the best.- liefje, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1completely agreed banksy is dope
- retawd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Banksy also has a better explanation of "street art" from the man himself on that site.
- PunX0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0By far my fav street art site:
http://www.picturesofwalls.com/ - mahalak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0god the one on the railing was awsome.... great man
- carlyles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love graffiti art!!! I think there should be more public venues for graffiti. I think the guys who are out there painting with skill need to have places to advertise their talent. On the other hand I do think that some people are artistically challenged and have really made graffiti look horrible. They go out and write crap on the walls with out even having a smidge of talent. I wish more people appreciated "street art".
