Why are people fascinated by photographs of crowds?
crowdhacking.com — This blog provides commentary and analysis on images of crowds, looking at why our eyes are drawn to certain kinds of crowd formations. Why do some crowds seem disturbing, and others natural? How does composition affect our responses?

- goodbeershow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+38Where's Waldo?
- TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24This blog was very insightful. I learned what a crowd was...
- quomen, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21None of those photographs really appeal to me..
am i defective?
or just a loner..
k i'll go work on my playing card-city now. - laplacian, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10@quomen
I agree. Not only am I not fascinated by pictures of crowds, but I disliked the photos. What does that mean about us?? - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I guess everyone has a fetish, but this has to be the oddest one I have ever seen. I seriously can't tell if this is a joke or not...
- an7agonist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21So, some of the diggs of this story were bought.... Interesting ;-)
- arof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+59An explanation for the front paging (if anybody has this on their profile and is curious):
http://www.wired.com/news/technology/internet/0,72832-0.html?tw=rss.index
The first few were bought. Digg got gamed (for journalism).
- tektalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10How would people react to a crowd of diggers?
- saikhan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Lock up your wives and daughters.
- daza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37More like lock up your Wii's and Mac's :-)
- Underbyte, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7Because usually theres a few hot babes in every crowd....
- zymosis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Only on digg will a comment about beautiful women get dugg down.
- jeszus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2i think i see him.......on wait that guy only has one white strip....
- adragons, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4I'll tell you why.
When humans were evolving/growing up (don't argue this point) we weren't living in cities with hundreds of thousands or millions of people, we lived in tribes/groups of up to 200 people. As a result, we never really learned to understand what large groups of people look like. So when we see a crowd of many, we are awed/surprised etc etc, depending on your personality. - PATSCRU, on 10/12/2007, -26/+4all ***** aside, this was a great original blog, keep up the good work
- zebov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Seriously? I kept expecting something intelligent or original. But that's not what the blog is at all. It's just pictures of people and the writer saying "There's a lot of people in this picture. I like it because they all have similar clothes." Where's the analysis?! Where's the description of the psychological and emotional effect the pictures have on us? Bah! Crappy blog. After getting to the bottom of the splash page of that blog, I really wonder who in the world dugg it.
- sfatoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5http:://www.duggmirror.com missed it, but coral cache got it: http://www.crowdhacking.com.nyud.net:8080/blog/
- nathanmock, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2mirror:
http://www.crowdhacking.com.nyud.net:8080/blog/
edit: woops sfatoo beat me to it. - ufia, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Because a crowd responds to the lowest common denominator, you just have to know how to start the party and you can manipulate the crowd to do whatever you want. Whether you want them to flash boobies, or smash windows, or protest about something, use your imagination, the crowd will follow like sheeps.
- kjcdude, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1DAMMIT NO MIRROR!!!
- kjcdude, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2wtf now the mirror works...
- Miraa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37I can't believe how many Diggs this is getting. This must be a sign of the end of days.
- gummih, on 10/12/2007, -13/+8Good call :o) It was a scam
- gummih, on 10/12/2007, -14/+17For all those wondering how this crap got to the front page:
http://digg.com/tech_news/I_Bought_Votes_on_Digg
- broomett, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Are they?
- Vision2098, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Nope.
- Frozo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Yeah, who says people are fascinated by photos of crowds?? This is so lame. lol
- pawperso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35How the hell, did this get to the front page.
- alekgv, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27we all know now.... $1 a digg is why!
- glinsvad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Why are people fascinated by people that are fascinated by photographs of crowds?
- Flamekebab, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Whilst crowds may be fascinating, since when are people in general fascinated by them?
- earther, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I too love crowds.
Here are a few choice crowd shots from the NC State Fair:

tons more buried in the archives if you care to poke around... - AlfaWolph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I didn't realize that they were.
- SigmundFreud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3As everyone knows, crowds are an organic lifeform. They're dangerous too, many a crowd has been found in the near vicinity of a fatal accident. All this is covered in Robert Rankin's novel _The Book of Ultimate Truths_ (which I heartily recommend).
- supernova17, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8This article is hilarious.
"After four and a half hours, I had 19 diggs." Bwahaha.
Why pay for diggs, be part of community and they will reward you. - morpo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Woah - there's pictures of people I know on there. The college game is a Cornell hockey game.
Small world. - cklol, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1deleted
- dude199, on 10/12/2007, -17/+2*scam* ***** u ***** who posted tis piece of *****
- lostcook, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Good for Annalee Newitz who wrote the article. I think it was a brilliant idea to show how easily things can be brought to a tipping point on Digg. Hopefully this will lead to quality diggs and the rest of us won't be fooled so easily.
- webmasterjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And now this story is getting more digs. It's like part two of the study of the Digger's mentality.
- alekgv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11haha i totally dugg this.
too bad i didn't get paid. - robogobo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1nothing attracts a crown like a crowd. digg is sooooooo stupid. it merely gives stupid people a feeling of power for branding other people's stuff bad (over their head) or stupid (like them).
it's really nice to see how many people can't spell or punctuate.- redtangential, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"nothing attracts a crown like a crowd"
looks like you can't spell either
- redtangential, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"nothing attracts a crown like a crowd"
- finista, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Hey, where is my buck!?
- Render, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Very interesting.
- merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sheep.
- twilson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2bitch. get to the front page the 'real' way.
- DesignExplosion, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Users who were paid to digg this should be banned.
- hleapha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Dude, its funny. It shows how lots of stupid people on here only digg stuff that already has diggs. The people that should be banned are those who do not form individual opinions. Everybody bashing the real experiment is missing the obvious.
- twilson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1hahaha
- Seraphya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I wonder how many more digs once this story
