Introduce a Prop
Totally imperessive- bj00rn, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1One also need something the author of the article forgot to mention even though it was apparent in some of the shots: Photoshop and Photoshop skills (Not a negative).
- beamer23, on 07/09/2008, -11/+4I'd like to know who says that those were all great Portraits?
Shooting someones hip is a good Portrait?
Having the face obscured by piss poor lighting is a good portrait?
Personally I don't think so.
I mean there are some good ideas in there, don't get me wrong. I really liked the one with the kid and the bear in the photo strip (cute kid).- DeskFlyer, on 07/10/2008, -2/+3"There are many different techniques for portrait photography. Often it is desirable to capture the subject's eyes and face in sharp focus while allowing other less important elements to be rendered in a soft focus. At other times, portraits of individual features might be the focus of a composition such as the hands, eyes or part of a torso."

- saulmora, on 07/09/2008, -1/+14Good tips. My favorite was #5, getting people out of their comfort zone.
- grantmc1, on 07/10/2008, -2/+2Some awesome pictures in here, i must try a few some day, i will when i need a new display pic!
- kbloemendaal, on 07/10/2008, -2/+2Love the ideas here, especially off center portraits, I always liked that effect.
- lolroflmaoafk, on 07/10/2008, -10/+5Another mediocre 10-list on Digg.
- diggapleeeze, on 07/10/2008, -2/+1and another mediocre post here on Digg.
- th3st, on 07/10/2008, -2/+2awesome article. lots of inspiration here ^_^
- crcook, on 07/10/2008, -2/+3Meh. How to take better portraits : read about lighting.
- hakkola, on 07/10/2008, -9/+7Should read:
10 ways to make fat girls look cute on myspace
Step 1: The myspace angle, take photo of overweight self from an angle which thins the face and obscures the rest of the body
Step 2: Play with brightness, either make the photo so bright that no one can really make out your fat face, or, if you're beyond saving, merely blur the picture beyond recognition
Step 3: Introduce a prop, if you don't have any cute animals, incorporate step 1, with a dookie in the toilet in the corner of the picture, or perhaps a dildo on the floor
Step 4: Look away from the camera, focus on the twinkies on the table next to you
Step 5: Get out of your comfort zone, yes, you're fat, but beautiful, put on that lingerie and put a caption on the photo about how you're beautiful on the inside as well, don't worry, those aren't looks of disgust
.... - Moebaca, on 07/10/2008, -3/+3That little girl looked like she had hair badly glued to the back of her head : /
- leorcastillo, on 07/10/2008, -2/+2Have you ever heard of..."If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all"?
- mrshare, on 07/10/2008, -9/+3All of these shots are ass. Fail.
- leorcastillo, on 07/10/2008, -2/+2Have you ever heard of..."If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all"?
- stutimandal, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2#6 should be #1
- Striff, on 07/10/2008, -8/+1Should be titled "How to take Myspace whore pics"
- Eric3k, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Why did you reply?
- kiderjones, on 07/10/2008, -1/+3Inspiration more than anything; Before I even finished reading this, I picked up my (kinda crappy) camera and started photographing the two closest subjects (cats) with results that made me say "thanks digital-photography-school.com, I learned something today."
- bieber, on 07/10/2008, -4/+3Gotta say, I'm very much not into a lot of those portraits. Most of them feel more gimmicky than solid.
And seriously, "Wow factor?" Using it once is already too much, but repeating it ad nauseum...ugh- Eric3k, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1I think they are better than 90% of portraits I have seen. Why wouldn't you want this type in addition other more traditional types? Not like there is a limit to how many you have taken. Beats the heck out of JC penney studio portraits.
- diggB, on 07/10/2008, -1/+4Of course, to each his own, but I thought that this is a stunning and simple portrait of a young girl (tastefully done and SFW).

There are many photos sites, but I found photo.net to be especially filled with interesting shots (and no, I don't have any interest in pimping their site).- Eric3k, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2It's good too. Falls into the eye contact description I would think.
- mrshare, on 07/10/2008, -6/+2does she have down syndrome?
- iamsmooth, on 07/10/2008, -1/+4Great link. Always looking to improve my photography skills.
- leorcastillo, on 07/10/2008, -1/+3It seems from some of the harsh comments that we have some protographer's in our midst, but as a novice who just dropped almost a grand on a D80, these types of articles are very much appreciated. I can only hope to get my portraits to such a "mediocre" level.
- Eric3k, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1The harsh comments don't seem to be from anyone who could make a better list with better pictures. If you like them then copy them as close as you want or experiment with them as a jump off point. In photography, everyone is a critic. At least as soon as you try to teach it. They are all well above average photos.
- supahpaul, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2I could apply this one on my PhoneCam photography!
- anasuya, on 07/10/2008, -3/+2Cool ones. Thanks.
- meta6, on 07/10/2008, -2/+4As a photographer I can say these tips are very good jump off points for people looking to get a little bit more creative with their imagery!. Kudos for information to be well laid out that may not be "common sense" to everyone out there.
- matthewf01, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1Is that an HP Mininote?
- MrSedgers, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1Is that a young Eric Idle in pic #4?
- rebelxwaltz, on 07/10/2008, -2/+0since everyone's going to be practicing more photography, check out this site

- TagSinned, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Tip #11: If you are a digger, take a picture with a hot chick. Your friends will be saying WOW followed by how?!
Tip #12: If you want the "WOW" factor, take a picture of yourself playing world of warcraft. - reviF, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1I'm a big fan of altered-perspective portraits. Just doing that alone will set your pics apart from the skill-less masses.
