- generalzod1, on 10/19/2007, -158/+6DUPE! No one needs to see this crap
- mr1337, on 10/13/2007, -3/+28The other front page story didn't include a video. RTFA or GTFO!
- AirRaven, on 10/10/2007, -1/+56At the very least he's led a life he can be proud of.
Optimistic to the end. :-
I feel so sorry for his wife and kids.- jsully, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21Be happy that they had the privilege of having such an awesome person for a father and husband. I'm sure that's what he would want. Time cut short is infinitely better than no time at all.
- Etheo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It feels as if he's not just being optimistic - more like self-actualized.
- dclowd9901, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2He says he's not in denial, but that's exactly what someone in denial would say.
I kid, of course. His words were incredibly inspirational, and I can only hope I have his strength when I am facing the end of my life. - maffiou, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Facing your own death is one thing, but I'd be gutted to leave my kids behind, not to see them grow up, not to be able to protect them, love them, just even know them...
I often wonder what sort of adult they will be one day, I'm in no hurry to find out but I want to be there then...
- Ascendancy5, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Well at least he had one final goodbye.
- RevJonathan, on 10/10/2007, -4/+42That was phenomenal. Very powerful stuff. God bless him for this, it will be moving for many digg visitors today.
- TypeEE, on 10/27/2007, -28/+9He doesn't need god's blessing. I can feel he is an atheist.
- Edorey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16and you are a bit of a douche... its just a feeling I get
- xutopia, on 10/10/2007, -11/+4Except he's right. The guy does not believe in God and why should he if he's dying from a disease God could perfectly of never made.
- SeaMowse, on 10/10/2007, -7/+7God didn't make cancer. Cell mutation and man caused cancer.
- OxygenJunkie88, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7That is one of the funniest comments I have ever read on Digg.
- xutopia, on 10/10/2007, -11/+4Except he's right. The guy does not believe in God and why should he if he's dying from a disease God could perfectly of never made.

- ICSU, on 10/10/2007, -10/+1TypeEE is right. Some people have to insert their personal delusion everywhere, especially when it's least needed and most provocative.
- NSMike, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11And what if I happen to think that believing there is NO god is your personal delusion?
It's a two-way street, folks. Atheists, generally those who know what they're talking about when they call themselves that, cannot prove there is no god, and they know and acknowledge they can't prove it, but they have made a decision that there is no god based on their observations. Christians, Muslims, Hindu, whatever theology you might pick, cannot prove there IS a god/gods. But based on their observations, they have decided to believe in one. People on either side of the fence who deliver their assertions as proven fact are both delusional, and are both antithetical to what they have turned into a cause.- MattB123, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Well said. Scientific theory says you cannot prove the negative.
I disagree with you but I bet we could both agree to disagree and leave it at that. - ICSU, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Russell's teapot ... try another argument
- NSMike, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Russell's teapot is based on the assertion that my ancient texts and collective agreement justify a hostile position towards those who would doubt it. I hold no such bias, and there are many of us out there who would do the same. It is your right as an intelligent, thinking being to choose whichever explanation for that teapot you prefer, or to reject the teapot outright. It is not my place to try to convince you one way or the other.
- MattB123, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Well said. Scientific theory says you cannot prove the negative.
- NSMike, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11And what if I happen to think that believing there is NO god is your personal delusion?
- TypeEE, on 10/27/2007, -28/+9He doesn't need god's blessing. I can feel he is an atheist.
- solitonica, on 10/10/2007, -0/+50I like how he said that the brick walls that seem to stop us from what we are pursuing are really just there so that we can prove how badly we want it. They're there to keep the other people out. Smart guy.
- doronster195, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4One of my favorite quotes of all time.
- MattB123, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25"It's not about realizing your dreams but how you live your life."
That's good stuff.- rrutia, on 10/18/2007, -5/+0he sounds like a Mormon. This guy has very strong principles of life!
- dyreschlock, on 10/10/2007, -11/+5jesus... i thought that was some random student that came up on stage at the end.
- JimXugle, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29I met this guy in August at CMU... he told my class that he was on the road to recovery and pretty much golden.
He gave a really awesome lecture too.
How old is this video?- kilraaj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10The other digg'd article about this mentioned that he had recovered, then relapsed.
- indraneel24, on 10/10/2007, -0/+28The lecture was on the 18th of September. Soo, it's two days old.
- TypeEE, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11This is not the first successful person I heard to allow their kids to paint their wall.
- CognitiveDiss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25Tear to my eye.... to be that positive in the face of death is something to admire. I only hope that on my deathbed I will have no regrets and have a loving family to carry on a positive legacy.
Kudos to this brave soul - Jalh, on 10/10/2007, -24/+4posted already.
http://digg.com/offbeat_news/Dying_Professor_Gives ...- RevJonathan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6True, but this links to a video of it.
- RandomGuySteve, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2So? The article in the first one had a link to the video as well. But hey, lets have 2 stories that are exactly the same on the frontpage.
- RevJonathan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6True, but this links to a video of it.
- psiphre, on 10/10/2007, -16/+4this is like five stories down on the main page... wtf?
- urbandistrict, on 10/10/2007, -0/+49I can not digg this story enough.
Thanks for posting. - christoast, on 09/04/2008, -0/+23I love the brick wall metaphor, so true.
- ahpro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Poor guy! Good for him for not being negative about it.
- zeptobyte, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23The brick walls aren't there to keep you out. They're there to give you a chance to show how much you want something.
That's awesome. Great lecture. - madskjaer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Beautiful.
- sfanetti, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22Cancer is the down side to being a multicellular organism. It is unfortunate, but death is the only certainty in life.
- banq59, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18And taxes

- jpsilva, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4amazing lecture.....great insite of human mind and how easy it is to give up when finding a brick wall. True sucess comes only to does who really keep trying to go throw the brick wall.....
thks - AforAlexander, on 10/10/2007, -6/+21Narrator: When people think you're dying, they really, really listen to you, instead of just...
Marla Singer: - instead of just waiting for their turn to speak?
I enjoyed the lecture, but this quote from Fight Club always comes to mind with things like these.- AforAlexander, on 10/10/2007, -11/+1lol the emo kids are burying me
- hoop311, on 10/10/2007, -21/+2buried for duplicate.
- RioGangsta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7this was really moving
- gfair, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8The only thing I hated about this was the end when he was being talked about by others talking about memorial scholarships and memorial bridges. Don't call it a memorial while the guy is still alive.
- Alpinesol, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20Holy Crap! My computer graphics professor (Ken Perlin, who didn't show this tuesday (the 18th)) was in the video at 3 minutes 35 seconds. That's why he didn't come to lecture! Weird coincidence digg, weird...
- civperc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Brilliant, and uplifting. Thank you for posting this. The world needs more people like Dr. Pausch.
- pat7047, on 10/10/2007, -11/+1so... what was he dying from...?
- SeaMowse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Did you not see the very beginning of the video? He is dying of Pancreatic Cancer - the most deadly type of cancer. Everyone I've known (uncle included) who was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer died in a matter of a few months. I know of one person who died less than a month after being diagnosed.
- cyberdillo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Very profound.....with a state like that, anything is possible. Could this sickness be turned around?
That would be wonderful for his family, friends and the rest of us.- l0wryda, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I hate to be the only one posting bad news, but according to wikipedia 99% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer die with a median survival from diagnosis of about 3 to 6 months...= At least he is a dignified and accomplished man to the very end.
- Yondelldude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7He already seems like he's the "cool" professor in his department. 500 diggs for this story.
- SeaMowse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Wow... that was a tear-jerker - but in a good sort of way. Very touching, to say the very least.
- proghead, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2For some reason his mannerisms and tone of voice remind me of Jim Carrey...
- Tsujigiri, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3So many great lessons from a man who has known so many great people, and in turn became greater. The full lecture is long, but it so worth your time guys. You're guaranteed to glimpse a perspective you've never considered.
Link: mms://wms.andrew.cmu.edu/001/pausch.wmv - jaynemother, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Moving speech, amazing man. But who else thought that the narrarator sounded like kyle xy from season 1
- phiend, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3" if you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of its self." Very smart man can't wait to see the entire lecture
- pcdude2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Make sure to watch the whole video. It is amazing!
- kenposan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1All I can say is; what an extraordinary individual.
- Snuffleupagus1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Moved me, Seems like a wonderful man. I prey for his family for when the time comes and they remember what a life he has lived even though he is so young.
- h4mx0r, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1You prey for them?
- turini1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0irony at its best, i just started using that program alice in one of my classes the past month
- kahsoon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Thank you so much for this video! I'm going through really tough time recently and his piece of advice manage to motivate me.
- Femix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hmm.. Great story. Touching.
Reminds me of the story " Tuesdays with Morrie"- mauri824, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I was about to say the same thing :)
- habibbijan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1To Prof. Pausch: Eris stella in aeternum. Gratias ago.
To all: Memento mori.- Mac454, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is the literal translation. It's the best I could find. Please translate it better for me. I'd like to know what you are saying. Thanks!
To Prof. Pausch: Will be star upon eternal. Give thanks.
To all: Memento to die
- Mac454, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is the literal translation. It's the best I could find. Please translate it better for me. I'd like to know what you are saying. Thanks!
- azntiger1000, on 10/10/2007, -9/+2Why do all the good and innocent die? Why not the terrorist, rapers, criminals, etc? Makes you think how sad and unfair life really is.
- Nanobe, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1A lot of awful people die young too. You just don't notice them as much because, well... you don't really care about them.
- gradeahonky, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1This is a good guy and he is ending his life in good spirits. Whats not encouraging about that? Anything is depressing if you only look at it through something quantifiable like age.
- lsteve13l, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3i agree with azntiger1000. watch his whole speech. its worth every second. his last 2 headfakes were so sad.
- willb285, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2yes it is inspirational, but anyone can give this advice, he has courage beyond me for facing his death in such a way, but almost everyone can carpe diem and such, his advice is nothing new or profound in this day and age
- JPOOPOO, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i completely agree. nothing he said hasn't been said before and made the front page on digg at least ten times already. you can ask any geezer out on the streets for some advice and they could preach to you like white on rice.
- sidyadav, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1both of you are douchebags. you obviously didn't watch the entire lecture. try saying the same thing once you have: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/front_im/pausch_9-18-07.wmv
- Arju, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1This is a great story... its people like this I wish could live longer.
But digg the original: http://digg.com/offbeat_news/Dying_Professor_Gives ... - shoook, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I don't like the reporter's voice or they way he talked. He made it sound like he was talking to 10 year olds.
- myrddraal986, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1He was, you idiot. Didn't you watch it to the end?
- lnlogauge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0according to his website, http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~pausch/ he spoke on Sept 18, so this is pretty recent.
